Yes please bring the series back. And the one about fittings. And you did a couple where you looked at people dancing and talked about their shoes, I think with Kathryn Morgan. The more technical videos are always my favourites. The reaction videos are fun, I appreciate they get views and make you money, but there are not as many people with the hard core technical knowledge serving the nerd population so any scraps you can feed us are gratefully received.

Too much commentary is annoying when you are trying to understand what the ballerina is saying about customising pointe shoes. Let the video do most of the talking and stop interrupting all the time. It's overkill.

I started watching Maria Khoreva videos during the pandemic. She’s that precise about explaining everything it’s cool. She actually does a lot of dual explaining in English and in Russian. She’s also that flexible head to toe, her extensions are mind boggling. But, in a video she mentioned she started in rhythmic gymnastics before ballet, so that helps definitely.

I find the customizing and pro fitting videos really cool to see. it amazes me that even though some dancers get customized, handmade shoes, they still have so many little (and big) things to do! my mom used to dance for NYCB (back in late '50s/early '60s), and she's told me stories of some girls using raw meat basically as toes pads/cushioning! she was always insistent on it... but thinking back, I always studied contemporary dance, and maybe it was just a horror story to keep me out of the ballet vortex!?

I used to 3/4 my shanks when I had traditional shanks because it prevented the shank from breaking too low and dying very, very fast. All depends on how your foot type stresses the shank. Now I have synthetic shanks which are very resilient. I also pre-jet glue the end of the box mostly as a moisture seal to prolong the life of the glue so the back of the platform won't soften and sink as soon.

Hey Josephine, I just wanted to ask you a question about an issue I’ve been having with my first pair of pointe shoes. Basically, the heel keeps popping off when I roll through Demi pointe, my shoes fit really well, they’re Grishko Nova 2007’s and I’ve sewn wide mesh elastics over the ankles to try and fix the problem but it hasn’t really worked. This may be because the shanks are quite hard but I don’t know, if you could give any advice or anyone else that would be great. Thanks!!

Hi Josephine. I'm Anghely, and I'm from Ecuador. I've already been doing ballet for 8 years (here it's training parallel to school, and we graduated after 9 years). And I wanna ask-propose you something, have you ever proposed to go on an international tour? because here in our country we have a problem and that is that the few stores specialized in pointe shoes and accessories for dance, don't offer an adequate and complete service for selecting our points, and currently we can see that we have certain problems and certain shortcomings, especially for those of us who have had our first pointe shoes years ago, we have been discovering little things that are not right, and there is not a sufficient amount of variety of shoes here. Would there be a way in which you could do an international tour in Latin America? Really the dancers we would be very thankful if you propose to do that. Greetings. I love your videos and I love your work

I want to say that I absolutely love all of your videos. I've not danced (officially) in about 15 years and I can see that pointe shoe technology has evolved and people are just generally so much more knowledgeable about them these days. I'm learning how many misconceptions I had when I was younger, and no one to correct them, as our local fitters weren't that knowledgeable either. I remember being so frustrated but no one knew anything about pointe shoes other than "buy shoe, wear shoe, break shoe" and just repeat. You'd ask your teacher for advice and the best I got was, "just try shoes until you find one you like." Which... yes. But a little guidance wouldn't have hurt!
Anyway, I'm rambling. It's so cool to watch these videos and learn things I wish I'd known back in the day. And it makes me really, REALLY miss pointe.

They usually rotate their shoes, so they can last longer, so they often will have a few shoes ready at a time. Also, if you are doing a performance and you go through 2 or 3 pairs, they need to be ready to just be changed between acts. There's no time to prepare them.

Hello Josephine - I agree with all the others … just can’t get enough of videos about hacks .. I loved the Kathryn Morgan episode - so Id vote for more one to one discussions with pro ballerinas, I would love seeing you visiting a factory and explaining the processes, interviewing staff and so on. It would be great if you could get a ‘maker’ (is that what they are called?) on screen to discuss with you .. maybe even someone from each of the major manufacturers? Id also enjoy seeing you interviewing people from costume departments of the companies to talk about customising footwear for different productions. Oh yes and you commented once that you would love to visit a pointe shoe museum? How about you do some content describing important shoes? Maybe you could visit the shoes in their ‘homes’ or talk remotely to a curator or private collector?
My goodness this is a long comment … but Ive been a subscriber for the longest time … and you brighten my life!

"Handmade" means just that - they're not made by machine. It doesn't mean they're made for each specific dancer. You can have shoes custom made, but that would cost thousands of dollars a pair.

Looking back, I feel like such a jerk. My daughter was so dedicated throughout her teen years, and I used to get so frustrated when she needed new shoes seemingly every two weeks. As a disabled vet, her dance career was really expensive for me on my income as a single parent.
She’d get new shoes, and then it was like she turned into a sadistic MacGyver-immediately beating them up, ripping, tearing, and customizing these expensive shoes I had JUST bought her! Little did I know, she was making them last as long as possible, and two weeks was actually a huge amount of time for those shoes, now that I understand better.
Between buying her shoes, driving her all over the country, hotel stays, and hand-stitching outfits for her from age 6 to 18, the list of expenses seemed endless. But I don’t regret it. She loved dancing pointe as a soloist, so it was all worth it to me. That said, the constant need for new shoes was aggravating.
Other dads were hardly ever at shows, but it was a huge part of my life every week, plus the trips. Now, knowing that she was making do with worn-out shoes without ever complaining breaks my heart.
She's all grown up these days, and I miss those times so much. After seeing this video, I realize I need to call her and apologize.
P.S. I did, however, make a video for her one day, thinking back on her youth. She was a great kid and dealt with real problems, like boys trying to change her and get her to quit dancing so she’d spend more time with them. This video is one I made for her, using one of her favorite songs. ruclips.net/video/6-xdACxGXhY/видео.html

why aren't pointe shoes made for how the foot forms? why are they so firm if the sole needs more give? are there not materials that could make this part of ballet less expensive? i feel like the shoes (and training ofc) are a big financial issue for making ballet inclusive
(was my issue as a kid, back in the 90s; i hear it's still an issue today)

Maybe it’s time for a shakeup in the shoe making industry. This is really horrible. Why don’t they make the shoes better?

My question is, and you kinda of touched on it, do the shoemakers not get offended when the dancers customize their shoes? All of the shoemaker's hard work seems to not have mattered in the end. The dancer, from an outsider's pov, seems to be destroying the shoes!

I think even if I was a pro, I wouldn't cut the inner sole and pull out the one nail. My narrow feet need all the support they can get. I might score the bottoms a bit so I didn't slip.

Why they "destroy" their shoes is not the question. The question is why can't proper shoes that work be made for them?

I wonder what point shoe makers think of the way ballerinas alter their shoes. I bet the first time seeing something like this would be a bit jarring.
