Hi Josephine, costume person here. The vodka kills the bacteria and when the alcohol evaporates it doesn't leave water marks on costumes that cannot be washed. Also some costume people do a mix of Vodka and Zloflora to spray on the costumes, as the Zloflora is also antibacterial but leaves a nice, fresh linen or floral scent :) Also we spray the costumes not only to save money on dry cleaning, but dry cleaning does break down costumes over time hence why some costumes do many productions over many years along with maintenance/repairs done to them :)
But surely the costumes still must develop stains or discoloration over time, right? Do costumes at least get some kind of occasional deep cleaning, or are they just retired when they start showing signs of wear?
Thanks for the explanation. I have some great vintage frocks from my grandmother which fit me but I've never worn them anywhere because of the laundry problems. To-do list: 1) Buy vodka. 2) Organise a vintage themed party!
@@SugarDemon1035 Hi, yes all costumes will get stained and discolouration from sweat, makeup and deodorant products over time. They do go for dry cleaning but even big scale West End/Broadway shows cannot send all non washable costumes for dry cleaning every week as that will cost A LOT plus dry cleaning does disintegrate clothes over time, so does washing. A dry cleaning rota would be organised for this purpose. If a show has a year long run, then you need to make the costumes last that whole year. This is a big part of the role of the Wardrobe Department, is to perform daily repairs and maintenance on the costumes as well as dressing the cast. Of course if something is beyond repair it does get replaced but we try to make something last as long as possible :)
I'm a costume designer for theater, can confirm: buy the bottomist shelf vodka, spray on clothes after wearing, leave overnight, no stench. I use it in regular life to keep clothes longer because washing and drying is so hard on them.
Cheap vodka, yes. But the highest proof you can get-the higher the number, the less water content. While the vodka dissipates and takes smell with it, the water just dries the stench into the fabric. At least 80 proof, if not 100!
@divinebeartarot7612 The vodka itself won't stain because it will evaporate (as long as your vodka is regular clear). But this won't get rid of stains, I don't think. I think this is more for smell and basic bacteria.
Fun fact- I work for my family's distillery, and during covid, we shut down to the public like other California businesses, so we pivoted to making hand sanitizer. We have a few different base recipes for vodka, and one was chosen to make the sanitizer. We were required to add a concentrated bitterant, though, so people wouldn't be able to drink it lol
Did you distill it to get a higher alcohol content? 40% would not be enough to actually kill bacteria, ideally you'd need 70%, which I guess is possible?
Hey, I appreciate distilleries like yours that made hand sanitizer. A vodka hand sanitizer was the first one I was ever able to use that didn't make me break out in little itchy red spots or make me sneeze. Or both. I loved that it didn't smell like anything (except alcohol). I still have a bottle of it put away.
@Ellex424 thank you! I appreciate you saying that. I haven't heard of anyone else who has those issues, but it sounds awful. I hope you find a few good options! It's always good to keep a little on hand, pandemic or not
I work with a nonprofit theater and can confirm, vodka is a pantry staple! We try to avoid dry cleaning until the end of each run, so we're on a constant rotation of vodka and febreeze lol. We also recommend wearing undershirts for all costumes in which they can be hidden, regardless of gender. It cuts back on the buildup of sweat and BO, and obviously, they're machine washable!
Just noting that 40% vodka does not actually kill bacteria, the alcohol content is too low. It's pretty inexpensive to get 99% isopropyl alcohol and mix that with 30% volume of distilled water (tap water also works but the minerals will flock out, which can block the spray nozzle). That way you can kill the sweat bacteria too :)
The vodka thing is true. My friend works in a museum as a textile curator. It's how they clean stuff. If you can put it on 300 year old silk, you can put it on a 1950s tutu!
LOL to the vodka hack. I used to dress up as a mascot. Yes, I dressed up as a giant squirrel. And after each event, we would have to spray the entire suit in an alcohol mixer because you can't just wash a overally human size suit of fur. We always joked that some day one kid would say "The squirrel smells like Uncle Paul"
I've commented this before, but could you please link the original creators in the description so we can find them! I wanna see more sometimes but it's not always easy to find!
Can confirm the Vodka hack, Cosplayers use it too to 'clean' costumes, usually because the material the costume is made from cannot be cleaned normally or else the costume would be destroyed.
Mikhail Baryshnikov ... OMGOSH!!! I am so glad that I was old enough to see him when he came to the USA. Loved, loved, loved watching him dance. Nobody better than Mikhail. ❤❤❤
Well that went from hi baby 💕💕 to omg! This is R rated. This is not for kids😱😱 real fast 😂😂😂 I just love that Baby Dio was chewing on a mini Pointe shoe while helping mama react. He's so adorable 😍🥰❤
I know that isopropyl alcohol can also be used to sanitize and freshen textile items. I have used it on bulky duvets, and I like to combine it with hanging it outside in the fresh air.
We use the vodka spray hack in the theatre world as well for costumes that can't be washed in the regular laundry!! Works great and the smell does not stay :)
Vodka hack, yes! I follow a professional figure skater who works on a cruise ship. The ice skating cast sprays their costumes with vodka at the end of every performance day.
Costume person here: The vodka will kill the bacteria, and because it evaporates quickly, the vodka smell will be gone quickly. Another way you can do it is to put it in a freezer out outside in below freezing temperatures to kill any bacteria, which is generally what causes the smell.
i am trying not scream. the accuracy of ballet dancers trying to date a normal person is EXACT. flawless. literally me every time i try to date a man with no dance experience. freakin bravo.
As a theater person with non-washable costumes we use Febreze and Microban. Febreze is for when you have to wear it multiple days in a row, and Microban is for between performances.
We saved this video until today for Quintin's birthday!!! He's getting over pneumonia but seeing you and Baby Dio made him smile!! Quintin will be there for Tik Tok 100 with you!!!
Amazon has a product called Funkaway that you can get in a spray. You can just mist it on the costumes and get rid of any body odors. I don’t know if it kills bacteria, but it’s very gentle on fabric and it smells like it’s just been dry cleaned.
Cheap vodka for cleaning clothes is the GOAT. I use it in shoes I can't put in the washing machine (anything leather) if they're stinky, on corsets (that also cannot be machine washed), coats with delicate linings, etc. It's enough alcohol content to kill bacteria and when it evaporates, no smell.
People seem to forget hand washing exists. You can spray with vodka after use during show seasons but once it's over, have each dancer soak their costume in a bucket with soapy water, zhuzh it up and down in the soapy water, rinse and repeat if water is still dirty. Dry off excess water in a towel and hang dry.
Nope. For a lot of fabrics - especially delicate silks, tulle, or anything older than 20 years, just that motion, and the chemical nature of the soap, can break down the fabric.
FYI… if you’ve got any nerds in the family… Magic the Gathering cards are non-toxic and perfectly safe for a teething baby to chew on. My nieces and all the kiddos at my brother’s comic shop would mow through junk common cards. Great fun! Tons of bright colors and a delightful texture on learning to nom jaws. Just thought I’d point that out since he seemed to want to go for the pointe shoe. He may also like the satin. I was a big fan of chewing the satin binding of baby blankets at his age and until about 6 when most of my teeth had finally erupted. Again, nice texture for sore gums. He’s so precious! I adore his cheeks. How do you just not waste the entire day away kissing on those sweet cheeks?
Ben has some of the most epic shoes I've ever seen, but I still haven't figured out how he's managed to go so long without breaking an ankle or something 😖😂
Our company also uses the vodka spray and the alcohol evaporates pretty quickly from the costumes so they do not smell bad. I just have to make sure I move the giant bottle when the little kid picnic tour comes through back stage! #Ballet314
That vodka hack is pretty close to what Burlesque performers do for their costumes! Lots of rhinestones, satin and tule. It can't go in the washing machine.
I use the vodka trick on my clothes after going on my city’s famously dirty public transport system. I can’t be washing jeans after every use but the thought of NOT cleaning them somehow gives me hives.
Omg the "dating a normal person" skit is also very similar to being proudly autistic/disabled and trying to meet people 🫣 Like "Oh! You're autistic? Have you seen The Good Doctor? I love this show 😍" or my favorite "My daughter works with disabled children, I know what it's like 😔" Ma'am, we were just talking about our hobbies, can you chill?
I told someone I do ballet and they said, "Can you do the turning thing on one leg?" I was so confused. I was like, "Pirouette?" They were very confused on what that was.
Vodka doesn’t smell. Professional Broadway costumes work the same way. And the costumers admit that if it gets hard backstage they can always drink the cleaning fluid. True story!
No, i hope not, theyve also reacted to instagram reels i think too, they’ll probably adjust i hope (rip tiktok i hope trump will bring it back soon 😢😔🙏💔)
I dream to have pointe fitted by you one day even if my body crashed my professionnal ballet dream, after 10 years of intensive training, still try to dance when my health allow me. Even if my body and brain say no, my heart cant say no to ballet 😅
YAYY TIKTOK 54!! Nope you can't always wash costumes and yup spraying it with vodka is what I have heard. I only know this cause they do this with belly dance costumes that are made with elaborate beading and are really fragile and you can't send them to dry cleaners also. A costume is usually over a thousand dollars cause its all handmade so you want to keep their longevity, spraying with vodka.
I know we use the vodka hack in opera. Typically costumes will only be cleaned at the end of a run. So, between shows costumers spritz them down to keep them from getting stinky.

I was coming in here to say the same thing! Vinegar works too, it’s what I use since I do children’s theatre but I’ve heard vodka does work better

I absolutely love the vodka treatment and I too have done it for decades for my costumes!
I'm going to start doing this! Less washing is great for longevity.

@lachouette_et_le_phoque yes, our sanitizer was 80% we are a full-fledged distillery, type 74
If rather just drink the vodka, not waste it! 😂

Belly dancers too!
And Reenactors, especially for silks.
Same in theater! Some costumes cannot be washed and we can’t afford to get them dry cleaned after every show.
Goth girlie chiming in. Vodka and the freezer were my best friend when doing laundry after clubbing. 😂

Dio with pointe shoes reminds me of the scene in Lilo and Stitch where Stitch builds San Francisco.
We used 99% isopropyl alcohol for personal areas on the costumes and 70-75% for tutu’s and other costumes
Im an actress and we use vodka at several theatres I've worked with as well instead of Febreze, especially if people have allergies.
The vodka trick is used by cosplayers too on the insides of ccostumes that can't be washed. Corseting, anything with metal, foam. :)
The Vodka is a real thing. We used to use it on our big Elizabethan court gowns when I worked at a renaissance faire.
Love watching these
Benblue has some wild shoes! He's good at handling the high ones!

Vodlka and water usually a 1/10 ratio. Old theatre hack. I also use it on my belly dance costumes.
I was thinking neat vodka!
I do wardrobe and the vodka thing. You'd be amazed. It doesn't stink. always spray down the pits and the bits

josephin u need go watch the movie, leap!
The vodka thing, you were making funny faces. Using vodka, which has a high concentration of ethanol, is a good disinfectant.
Not if it's only 40%, you need at least 60% ethanol by volume to actually kill bacteria. Ideally 70% (but not more, or it gets less effective again)

💯 about Ballerina talking to people what they do for a living. 🎉 Baryshnikov
At 5:18 does the person have ribbons sewn onto the shoes, or just elastic? The shoe doesn't seem to fit all that well, being loose.
Thoughts?

Im a professional dancer but i specialize in modrrn hip hop😂did ballet a couple of times hated it 😭its a beautiful expressional form of dance but yoh
I'm so sorry if this offends anyone but I have to get this out
Whenever a dancer falls or makes mistakes on stage....Just blame the vodka fumes XD
The smell goes away. My clinic used everclear as sanitizer during covid when stores started being out of sanitizer.
It will be sad to see no more of these.
“P” is also for PERFECT.
I use vodka for starch when quilting.
I am a ballet dancer. I do not go on point, but I really do. I am only six.
