- This 1970 Camaro is Detroit Speed founder Kyle Tucker's personal weekend ride. It's set up with every bit of suspension DSE makes, so it can handle Autocross, Track Days, Road Trips, and Weekend Cruises. Under the hood is a MAST Motorsports LS engine featuring drive-by-wire technology, and for something so fast, it's a ridiculously well-rounded package.

People can say what they want about American cars and whether they like e or not but NO ONE can deny the awesome sound of an American V8. A singing monster.
HUUUUUUUGGEEE fan of the round tailight camaros...hands down my favorite camaro body. It's nice to see you around my area!
These cars are not only my favorite Camaro body but might be my favorite muscle car body from the era. Perhaps I am crazy but these cars conjure Italian styling in my mind. From the time I was a young child when these cares were everywhere and I knew nothing about cars I was fascinated with this shape. I have owned a 2 67 cougars and a 69 Barracuda Fast back 30 years ago and a 79 Corvette more recently.I am with Matt on disliking Old cars in regards to feeling safe and the abysmal handling, brakes etc. This I would love to own if I had the money. The roll cage is sweet in its integration. For my purposes I don't need the bullet proof motor and any NA garden variety LS 500 HP would suit me fine. Would need a good stereo. Wish he asked what the car would cost to have built and how much the Fancy LS Block motor costs?
675HP Mast Black Label LS427 is $21,495.00.
Too bad it isn’t a 4 eye 2nd Gen
These are the kind of cars I wanted as a kid. I had pictures of pro touring muscle cars on my wall. This makes me relive those days
fordrac1ng81 late 90’s 😂
The dudes over at Detroit speed are doing treat things . They're legends !
Like many who watch these videos, I appreciate how I can relax into the way Matt thoroughly critiques each car he drives for what it is. The series with Detroit Speed has been special, because these folks really allow a deep connection to be felt by the viewer and as always, Matt is just so appreciative of their passion. Thanks so much for continuing to recreate our ideas of fun by driving, enjoying and evaluating the rides of complete strangers!
This was an absolute joy to watch. Listening to how quickly you got back on the power after shifting was incredible I bet it was so sweet in person
I've said this before and I will say it again. I thoroughly enjoy these reviews. You know how to communicate what you are experiencing to the viewer in a way that most journos do not.
You can tell this guy drives this thing fast a lot too. Matt is full throttle in 4th and he is super laid back in the passenger seat.
I wanna cry that camaro is so beauiful. Can I get one in matte black?...
yes you can
WOW....this car gave me an eargasm!!!!
13:28 that guy had an eargasm!
he was just chillin hand out the window
I need a car that sounds like this. good god this sounds like something out a movie.
Most cars in movies don't even sound this good tbh...
3:22 dude. like they need to use this as a stock sound effect for car chases.
3:22 AND THE LAAAAAAND OFF THE FREEEEEEEEE.... AND THE HOOOOOMEEEE OF THE V8888888888888
Dream car. The sound, looks, power and drivable to... Rather have this then a Ferrari.
Wim Boeren Oh absolutely no question for me too. This thing is downright gorgeous.
Loving the Detriot Speed stuff. Nice to see their whole line. Good pick.
Wow now that is a badass Camaro. If you drive this while sleepy, you won't be for long!
Havent seen you this excited on a car in a while. Must really be special.
I like this guy. Seems super knowledgeable and down to earth. Has good taste in cars too.
8 year old me would have loved this car. 23 year old me fucking loves this car. Imagine that appearing in your rear view mirror. Me and my BRZ would shit ourselves.
Tim Weydert I'm a brz owner too, and let me tell you; I know I would lose in a race but I'm still going for it!!!!
Very nice to see companies caring about the suspension and cornering abilities of muscle cars. That really raises the bar of performance on those nice cars.
RIP whoever crashed on that road @11:00
That cage is amazingly clean.
I can't stop watch this video. Matt did a great job. I really enjoyed watching all DSE custom cars.
I'm so glad you finally got around to featuring this car.
This car sounded NASTY!!! Thanks for sharing this car and company with the world, RUclips is a great thing for sharing this kind of car company with the world.
Not that I expected anything less, but really enjoyed this video just from the sheer amount of knowledge Kyle Tucker has. Very intelligent and well-spoken about this ride.
"Game over" is a great way to describe this Camaro. Love it.
Matt what's up?? That 70 camaro you drove in N. Carolina is bad ass!!
Sounds awesome!!
I just bought 1970 split bumper I have looking into this build to get ideas of what I'd like out of my build. Literally JUST started striping the paint off and have some parts in hopefully 2 weeks but I'm so excited to get something like this going! Thank you!
Give us a call Daniel and we can lead you in the right direction!
that was the baddest car I have ever seen TST review..
Bryan McHugh ?
oh..I am a 1970 Camaro guy...this thing is a freaking monster..
Bryan McHugh Of course... Detroit Speed builds the baddest cars👌
What a badass car! Very nicely done, is almost like having an unlimited budget to do everything you want to a car.
Wow, did I hear 315's in the front? That is a good looking ride.
That is correct! 335's in the rear.
Detroit Speed, Inc. What size wheel?
They are 18x10.5's
Thanks for the response.... LOVE the CAMARO.
im hoping to get a 1970 camaro. This just made me start looking harder.
A well executed Camaro, my God this baby is a piece of rare art, jmo.
What an amazing Camaro. Good job by the guys who built it
just happened to be awake .. guess I'm staying awake lmao
Someday I will build a restomod!
omg that engine noise is my new alarm clock now...
@slade bonge the roar of the engine
one of my favorite videos, I would love something like this for a 67 camaro.
i did a ride along in that exact Camaro at the GM Nationals in Carlisle, PA a few years back... sick fast car
That might be my favorite Camaro I've seen.
Well full cage makes it stiffer too. Nice video, thanks for sharing.
Kyle @detroitspeed makes amazing cars. They take old uncomfortable, car that handle like shit and make the handle like a dream.
I have the upmost respect for this humble man. I met him at SEMA a few years ago.
This car sounds so good. This camaro got a lot of even modern day cars beat in the sound department.
That thing sounds mean! A tell tale sign that a car is fast is when Matt laughs. That's how ya know
I once owned two Camaros at the same time, a '67 RS and a '71 bottom-of-the-line 6-banger, so I could compare handling between the 1st & 2nd generation designs. GM had significantly improved the design for handling in the newer version. The '67 RS was the predecessor to the Z28 that was introduced later that year with the amazing 302 CID engine that could rev to 9,000 rpm and produced about 425 hp despite its published rating of 290 hp. I converted my RS to a Z28 configuration with a bored-out 283 with all mods to emulate the Z28 motor and upgrades to the entire drive-train, with a forged & balanced crank, forged con-rods & pistons, angle-plug heads w/ 2.02" intake valves, etc. Eventually, I went extreme with everything to improve handling too, so I knew what it took to make the Camaro handle, which paid off in autocross racing where I once took a first against a field of 500+ competitors in my racing class. Still, by comparison to the refinements in modern sporty cars, it was a violent beast with some bad manners!
It looks like Detroit Speed has taken modern technologies and implanted them in this 47-year-old platform with some success. As Matt points out, modern technology has come a long way in refining the engineering throughout the entire car, so I doubt that the potential of a 1970 chassis could ever match what automotive engineers accomplish now. The Camaro brand is 50 years old, and it died for a while. I'm so glad that GM revived it with a nice styling treatment of the retro look and some impressive new tech that pays homage to the revolutionary spirit that pony-cars once had!
This video needs to be herd with headphones!! This camaro sounds insane!!!
AWESOME ONE TAKE MAT! Coolest car yet IMO, nothing better than a muscle car that handles. If you ever get the opprotunity to do some old school MOPAR stuff like a Cuda please take em up on it (:
Stay tuned for a Mopar...
Can u possibly do a wagon car next??? say a nova station wagon
I hope you're joking
One of the best sounding One Takes.
Matt, I previously offered for your to drive my Camaro but you had just filmed this. You are right. This Camaro is amazing. You'll be hard pressed to find one better than Detroit Speeds! Thanks for the video and more inspiration.
OMFG that exhaust note is the literal definition of eargasmic 3:24...holy, fucking, shit that is just perfect...PERFECT! This is just gorgeous, one day maybe...one day.
I'm not a Camaro guy, but I like this one. Wow!!
I would buy this type of car everyday all day all day over any Ferrari or Lamborghini. This day in age the technology exists to make em handle and there is really nothing that exudes the attitude that muscle cars do. You can tell he loves it. Great review once again Matt.
Glad to see it's not an "old bit" 69, tip of the cap to Detroit Speed for doing the gen 2 Camaro.
Probably my favorite gen Camaro and that V8 sound.... Hard to beat... Very nice car and vid.
13:28 the guy in the pickup probably had an eargasm
I'm not usually a fan of muscle cars but that thing is badass
Call me crazy, but this might be one of my favorite One Takes that you have done
man.. I have a car crush now. I love that body and setup
I really wish they'd take this car to the mountains for Matt to drive out there. This thing would be amazing on those curvy roads. Or, if Matt could meet them in the mountains in North Georgia or Tennessee and drive it around there too.
10:50 is the definition of smiles per mile
"can you take out that bar in the back?"
I thought Matt was going to make the guy an offer lol
I wish: A 1978-86 European Ford Capri MkIII, Art Morrison chassis or full Detroit Speed front & rear subs and suspension topped with a Mast LS engine. It would be a 1000 pounds lighter than a Camaro. Alas, the Capri with all its good looks and high euro sales and following is a bit of an orphan in the US. But if DS paid it some attention, its low cost, smaller size and light weight would make it a world beater.
AbitNutz yep, a mk3 Capri, mk1 or mk2 Escort, or mk1 or mk2 Cortina. I will import one eventually, probably an Escort cause those are the first classic Fords that I fell in love with.
In response to Matt's comment about the ubiquitous LS: LSs are the go-to for modern builds, but for Pontiac fans, you can still build a brand new Pontiac-based engine with all new aftermarket parts and not a single original Pontiac part. We truly live in a golden era of performance.
2nd-gen F-body will always be my #1 favorite "affordable" American platform. The prices are climbing these days...sigh...but I've never driven anything else that got so sideways with such control. Many fond memories. Someday there'll be a high-end 2nd-gen Camaro or Firebird in my future, and I'll leave the crazy-fast but rusty rattletrap that was my beloved '77 in my memories.
Amazing, I really like what theses guys are doing.
It a huge muscle car fan but this car is sick. It sounds like a angry lion!
Quote of the day, "What a lovely thing this is". Well, I have to agree.
Man that Camaro sounds awesome!
Nice video, love to hear the car and the commentary... much better than video with music over the engine. Good job.
I Loooooove this type of stuff. Muscle cars and trucks that are set up to autoX and road race. I have a silverado reg cab swb that I plan to have set up.
This car is an absolute beast. AMerican Muscle to his beastliest!
love the 1970 camaro rear tail light absolutely gorgeous
315s in the front! I knew it!
Proof that 325s CAN fit with a little work in the front of a DSE suspension :D
The Tuckers know their stuff and I've seen him destroy, everything you can imagine from all of the new track type cars!! Believe it!!
man,i love Detroit speed....they make awesome cars...thanks for the videos!
Congrats on the G35 review for reaching over 1.5 million views! Those cars are sex on wheels.
AMAZING car....Best car you've reviewed IMO
I watch the optima clips on youtube when I get a chance. I hate I don't direct tv to watch these scca guys on the regular.
So Larry says you don't usually respond to comments, I just wanted to say that I really enjoy all you're videos Matt, Thank you.
OK Mat, when watching videos there are the 'good ones' let's say the 6+'s. Then for the higher echelons, I rank them accordingly:
1. Goose pimples at some point during video,
2. Goose pimples brought on by just the introduction alone and throughout the video, and
3. Brings tears (literally) to my eyes (usually a Petrolicious video because it connects the human element).
This car is, without a doubt a massive #2. Holy freaking shiite!
That Camaro sounds eargasmic!
that engine sounds amazing
Been playing to much Horizon 3, when you first pulled out onto the road I was thinking "you're on the wrong side!"
Man I'd love to get some of those parts for my '79 Camaro.
Idk anything about old cars nor am I crazy about them but goddamm this thing is sick!!
My god...this car is a work of art!
seems like a great humble dude.........and his builds are just about perfect.......about all of them. I love that his builds are rather quiet vs say the Ring Bros....dont get me wrong, those builds are fantastic as well, but they are just too much...over the top......Detroit Speed builds are so simple, handsome, low key.
Stop, please, my wallet can't take it anymore. This channel is just a go-to for my "future shopping list", and I can tell you that I'm broke in the future thanks to this video. But sure as shit I'm driving fast and in style while being broke. :)
NOO! Matt you were 45 minutes from me! You should have stuck around and attended the car meets we have every friday in Raleigh there is one tonight in Moorseville near Detroit Speed at the Moorseville outlet mall. I would have loved to meet you in person after watching you on RUclips all these years!
The want is strong with this one.
I raced against this guy at a SCCA CAM Challenge event not long ago. Mike Dusold had his shop car and a gang of his customers out there too, if you're not familiar with the name Dusold check it out because it's worth the time. Now, these guys were all damn fast, but guess what spanked them all handily.... Dude with an '88 Firebird, car had stock interior, no cage, even had stock brakes! It even had an old school Chevy 350, sounded very healthy but definitely wasn't upwards of 650-800+hp like the other cars. It did have very wide wheels, at least 315's and very good quality suspension, but it goes to show autocross is all about car setup and positioning!
ultimate bad ass muscle with great engineering
315 in front?! No Wonder it handles. McLaren F1 had 235 (actually it had same as I have on my Passat :D) and it done miracles.
Reptilius Maximus Mclaren F1 was also a quite light car, and when you remove weight you can make the tires smaller and still have the same kind of grip. But I think main reason for smaller wheels was less rolling resistance so it could get higher top speed.
Error Creator But if you imagine how much tyre compound evolved over those years, imagine having 25% bigger surface and those tyres on some older supercar... And I do not believe Camaro is heavy by todays standards. At the time it had ~3200lbs. Yes, its still heavyweight vs F1, but hence price difference. So, it seems like they compensated with just putting insane wheels as its cheaper. Im always curious what Gs would pull this monster.
The original F1 was meant primarily for road use instead of track use (The Ferrari F40 is faster on a track despite being 7 years older and underpowered by comparison), so it could get away with such skinny tires up front, especially since its weight bias is in the rear where it has 315s. It was designed for road use, hence why it has a relatively soft suspension. The more track oriented GT and LM models have 275s up front and 345s at the rear. The Camaro having 315s up front is just par for the course with your typical track/auto-x oriented car. Look up any GT race car that's currently running and they all run at least a 300 width or wider front tire, whether it be Corvette, Ferrari, 911, Aston, etc.
Tucker, what a nice guy.
I am insanely envious.
This is some Stuntman Mike shit right here.
I need to find a job that locates me close to this shop!!
TOP TIP: If you have Amazon Prime... You can watch "The Grand Tour" Premier TONIGHT at 7:01 PM EST, 4:01 PM PST!!
Now this is a muscle car I would love to own.
The current Camaros/Challengers are just too big.
This has been your best video series and I don't even really like muscle cars. Those dudes build some seriously mean shit. Jesus...
I always grew up loving imports but boy are these correctly done muscle cars are badass.
