Since I started driving cars with automatic climate control, I can honestly say I haven't adjusted fan speed or air direction in the last ten years. I guess some people still do this, but as far as I'm concerned, those controls don't need to be separate rotary knobs.
I agree. I've been driving Korean cars for the past decades and their automatic climate control works exceptionally well. I literally set it and forget it.
What I love the most about the design is the concave trunk at the back, just like on the Essentia concept! The GV80 has it too but it looks a bit more awkward since it's an SUV
The design element that I like the most here is the head and tail lights, it soo unique and different that I can't think of any other car that looks like it. I appreciate unique car design.
The best part about the new 3.5L and the other SmartStream engines is that they have port injection in addition to direct injection. Water to air intercooling also doesn't hurt.
The blue is jaw dropping gorgeous. Satin chrome finish on the wheels looks fantastic. Everything about this car looks amazing. This is probably the first 2-spoke steering wheel I've ever seen that looked really elegant. The 3D gauge cluster is unnecessary luxury fluff, but boy is it distinctive and a cool party trick. It takes me back to 1990 when Lexus introduced the electroluminescent gauge cluster in the LS400. The rest of the interior screams top-notch premium too. Genesis is doing a great job. My only complaints are the sole reliance on small displacement turbo engines as opposed to larger, naturally aspirated engines. That's my personal preference for long-term reliability. I'm also not a fan of how enormous size of Genesis grills. That's a trend that's not going to age well.
Damn, in terms of design I think this thing dumps on the current 5 series. However, I’m personally not a fan of wireframe grills; looks cheap and flimsy. One thing I hated Cadillacs for.
I have owned an Azera, 1st gen Genesis v6 and v8, 1st gen Equus, a couple of Sonatas, and I now drive a Kia Stinger GT2. I think the new G80 looks really great. One comment about the lights, I am unsure about the body-colored separator put into the lights, it seems almost an afterthought, or they didn't quite know how to finish them. I remember a gen or two back of the Merc S-class offered, I think, tail lights very much like these new headlights, and even after several years, I still don't really like them. Otherwise, the new G80 looks awesome.
Koreans are having an absolute renaissance right now. I will be honest not a huge fan of the front diamond grill. If it were me I might consider playing with an angular stylized G as a inspiration for the grill. I get that it’s probably hard to come up with a new unique design language that works with every culture and taste. I do however love the front lights they have a great light signature. The interior kind of reminds me of a whale, unfortunately not in a good way, with all those flowing lines. The centre console shift area looks a bit over the top, reminds me of Korean karaoke bar. With the RBG lighting and shiny silver and glass. I’m a big fan of Scandinavian design, which is pretty much the opposite of most Asian design. To each their own. I am glad people are still making sedans that are better then ever. I’d still love to test drive the car, although the current gen G70 is with the Manual RWD really interests me. Edit: Also just want to say it seems like I’m in the minority when it comes to design once again goes to show how not one design isn’t perfect for everyone.
The design, while a bit conservative, is really well resolved! it will age well! Genesis is now starting to establish it's own identity and not derive it from elsewhere! The value is STRONG!
This looks fantastic to me. My only issue is the wheel choices for the different trim levels are a bit blingy for my tastes. For a long time, people have criticized genesis for lacking a strong design identity. That is a thing of the past now! Can’t wait for this design confidence to hit the G70.
A Genesis is like a Grand Seiko, you preserve it for the next Generation, that's how great these vehicles are. I own a 2009 Hyundai Genesis 4.6 love driving it everyday. Genesis is awesome reliability is a 10. Luxurious and humble at the same time, beat the German Competition by miles in features for less money.
At 9:36, the designers from Irvine were promoted and designed this Genesis? References required. All signs point to Peter Schreyer (former Audi/VW design chief) working on G80, gen 1, then Luc Donckerwolke (VW/Audi/Lamborghini/Bentley) and Sang-yup Lee (New Camaro, Bentley) designing this... You MUST get these important details correct...
Love the review especially about the 3 questions you should ask yourself....changed my mind about the car buying deal...if I'm not mistaken, because this is a KIA/Hyundai product; does this come with a 10 yr / 100k mile warranty?????
Tony Holmes I had a problem with the sunroof but they replaced it but that’s the only issue I’ve had bought it with 32k miles have a little over 70k now had car for almost 4 years I drive lots of highway miles runs great
Well-lll, since you did ask for my opinion ... The G80 front crosses the line from bold to ridiculous. It looks like the Batmobile circa the late 1940s. I just don't see that front grill appealing to the sort of rational, value-conscious buyer who'd consider a G80 over European alternatives. What I do like, however, is the profile. Overall, it's a fine looking car and I'm looking forward to more reviews and information about it.
I had a 2015 Hyundai Genesis Ultimate and a 2018 Genesis G80, but were great cars with their minor issues. This new one is a major improvement over the previous gen. Hopefully a few of the silly issues (navigation unit replacement, sunroof issues, smelly A/C unit) I had are corrected with this new design.
I too had a 2015 Hyundai Genesis select tech and a 2017 G80 Ultimate and they were mostly problem free cars. My 2021 G80 Prestige (now with 8500 miles on it) is a horse of a different color. As beautiful as it may look, the interior is 99% cheap plastic and it clicks, pops and crackles like cheap plastic. The worst part is that Genesis (Hyundai) customer service engineer thinks that it's normal to have plastic parts clicking and popping regularly from about 20 different locations in the cabin of a luxury car that cost $62K. It's really confusing to me why they spent the time and money they did to isolate the engine and road noise, yet cheap out on the build quality of the interior. It may be statistically normal for the 2021s , but if Genesis actually believes it's acceptable to have it's new design sound like a 10 year old car inside, shame on them! Dr JRapp
When they release the 2021 G80 Sport, They MUST put in a console mount lever style shift lever, and make the tach operate in a clockwise motion instead of the back asswards design they have planned.
When you do the early review of the GV80 can you ask Genesis about towing. I have not heard anything about towing and I need something to take the family bikes out and to pull some jet skis. I am hoping the have a factory tow kit available when it goes on sale.
They did not share any specifics on towing . . . will have to wait until our FIRST DRIVE REVIEW. TECH REVIEW of the GV80 coming up Wednesday, August 19.
I really like the design concept except for two things, the side turn signals just one line would be nice and please put real exhaust tips k5 gt style !!! Most everything else is stunning and or can be lived with.
Very nice exterior and interior design, beautiful car to look at, I hope the quality matches the design. I wasn't happy with my 2015 Hyundai Genesis ride quality.
I think rear is too round for me, not a fan of the double stacked taillights and the grill is not pretty from certain angles but the side is nice elegant.
While I’m not a fan of overly large front grills, on the Genesis it somehow works. I think this is just a beautiful car. Genesis is doing to Lexus what Lexus did to the high end luxury cars from Germany.
One think people perhaps Haven’t considered about the handwriting thing is that in asian countries this text input is much more common in all sorts of electronics, especially among older folks. I can’t imagine it would ever be as useful in English because in asian languages they typically require much fewer symbols to spell out their words.
at 8:57 you say light lines that run the width of the car ruins the design. Couldn't disagree more...it's a styling trend. Porsche is all on board with their new cars.. Wishing for the old-style gear lever is understandable, but it's akin to someone saying the old analog style gauges are better (it's personal preference). Don't agree with you on many fronts.. but agree this is a stunning vehicle. The GV80 is every bit as good looking as the Bentley Bentayga, but at 1/5th the cost... MB, BMW, Audi, and especially Lexus should be concerned...
Hey @motomantv, I love almost every bit of this car. Especially the hood and how it rises a bit from the fenders, the indent that terminates with the logo, headlights, beautiful lighting signature, interior, everything is wonderful. I have one complaint: No amber turn signals in the rear. *stop doing this please!* The Korean spec cars look so much better at night with full amber turn signals because they all match front, side and rear. Genesis turned the brake lights in the Korean market into running lights and made the amber turn signals red brake/turn signal combos. Why? Please do share this with the designers. Oh! And ask them to push harder for NHTSA to allow intelligent high beam headlights like the G80 has in Korea, I heard NHTSA is revising the headlight regulations to allow it, but those articles are from late 2018/early 2019. Thanks for your great reviews, you are tied with Alex on Autos for my favorite reviewer on RUclips!
I address the headlight issue in this episode a bit more as the car I was driving was a German market car and thus fitted with the always on high beam laser headlights. What we have to do is appeal to the NHTSA, EPA and DOT to get them to finally approve these systems for theUS. ruclips.net/video/6L2pKDZDKUc/видео.html
I love the car. I have the 2015 Hyundai Genesis. In this new car I like the front and interior. The hatchback look in the back is not my favorite part of it. I would prefer a bit more of notch back.
At least they’re offering a few dials. Audi’s are all touchscreen and the screen to change climate forces the driver to literally look down and completely of the road. If manufacturers are going to these touchscreens, they need to offer total voice command that works, even if CarPlay or Android are connected.
That grille is.... well, IMPOSING. However, mounting a front license plate to it kind of ruins its "flow". The upper body crease that flows from the grille, across the hood and into the shoulders of the car makes me moist. I am sorry that the intoxicating rumble of the V8 engine is gone, however. Nicely done review, hopefully your feeling well.
Funny how Motoman says this is a very very early prototype, while other auto journalists (KBB, AlexonAutos etc) already reviewed the car in the last few days..
Embargo was this past Tuesday - which was the same day as the 992 Targa (ruclips.net/video/6L2pKDZDKUc/видео.html). Not sorry, the Porsche - which VERY few got - won that day pushing this to Thursday. Everyone in the US got the same pre production prototypes over the past two months.
@@MotoManTV hey hey, I'm just saying.. Also I saw the 992 Targa with other RUclipsrs as well.. The embargo makes it confusing as to when journalists actually got the cars & recorded.. How's Kumo doing?
The Virus has changed everything for us and the OEMs. Where we used to go to one central location - mainly in the US and Europe - as a group and drive the cars, we now have those same early and pre-production prototypes come to us. Yes, I miss the travel greatly but have to admit, it makes life 1,000,000 times easier for production. Downside, embargo dates are now much farther out. Pre-virus, we would goto a program and the embargo would lift the very next week. Today, we may get these cars 1 - 2 months in advance of an embargo. For example, I shot these two cars in early July. Thanks for asking about the big man . . . he's doing OK. He's slowed down quite a bit which is why you guys don't see him in as many episodes.
I really like what they did with the G80 both inside and out, especially inside. The interior is simple, yet elegant. Hope the materials live up to the design, I'd ask about the quality, but its a pre-production. Not a fan of the steering wheel though. I like the exterior. The grille is a bit too tall for my liking though (maybe blacked out inserts and a euro style long plate will fix it) & the chrome line in the trunk lid is a bit too cheesy. I wonder what it would look like with wide 21" diamond cut wheels. Too bad about the V8, kinda broke my heart. It would've been perfect with it. I find it odd they sent you pre-production cars instead of KDM ones, I was under impression that both cars already went on sale in South Korea. As always, excellent work, M. Edit: ohh and kudos to the Genesis team for not doing another lightbar.
Once again, an eagle eye! This one was a bit confusing to all of us. There was a reveal of this and the GV80 earlier in the year in Korea. And yes, there are reviews up of KDM G80s. Genesis USA chose to do a couple of events - the first one happening in Miami back in late January - which I was supposed to goto but, you know I got held up:) Then the virus which changed the plans and that's how these two ended up in the hangar at the same time. GV80 goes live this coming Wednesday, August 19.
@@MotoManTV could be an emissions thing? I'm not familiar with the KDM emissions regulations, but could be different from the US & the euro6(?) ones or not as strict.
The rear pillars . I’m not sure. Something about it that bothers me . I’ll say this. My Lexus GS F sport lease is coming to an end. I love the car but that it for the car itself. And I’m seriously looking at this regardless of my hang up on the pillars
[Edited] Just 3 things for me. 1. I like the shape of the grill but the chrome of all that real estate is just too much. Maybe if a "sport" model is introduced they could tone down all that bling a bit. Maybe a "blackout" option? 2. Love the taillights! Only ones I like better are Audi's motion lights. Caddy and Porsche? Bleh. 3. Genesis seems to have the same business plan as Lexus did initially. The LS used to be a bargain luxury vehicle as did the Hyundai Genesis. $70K for the top end G80 is no longer a bargain. Now I need to rethink just how much I want the car. Great hangar review!
Nice 👌🏼 especially interior, the grill is a little “in your face” but is still ok. Might work better in a more subtle color. I’m seeing a lot of BMW design and engineering elements. I have been wondering who BMW is working with for some time now. I’m still not sure, because it feels to me like the new BMW models are not “build” by BMW anymore, loosing the iconic design elements also. Who do you think they(or know) are working together with? Would not be surprised if there was a mild collaboration with Hyundai/Genesis...
Min Jordan Hong i know, but i mean a real collaboration. The moving the car with the key thing screems BMW and so many things are alike without lawsuits.
1) They should kill the 90, who needs it and too expensive in this economy. 2) The 5 series should go down in size, same with the 3. 3) The reviewer is great. He's always filled with verbiage, and reminds me of Maxwell Smart/Inspector Gadget minus the overcoat.
I disagree here, it will be hard press to find a better car at this price with this level of equipment, power, and quality. While every car depreciates, it's unlikely that the rate of depreciation will be any worse than the German competition. There a reason that German cars are always on the list of cars that depreciate the most. The lower price of the G80 should help reduce the loss of value when compared to the competition.
Because of the all new eye-catching design, powertrain, materials, technology and overall personality or the G80 and GV80, I expect it and its SUV twin to hold value better than even the telluride and palisade, maybe even better than this rivals. Pair that with Genesis dependability and the industry leading warranty as well as 3 years free maintenance. I can tell that the dealers will really value these vehicles and the value will stay quite high.
I'm a first generation Genesis Owner and I still love my Genny. I like most things on the new genesis G80 except I would like a transmission shifter and please please stop making the grills so massive. The large grills are not even necessary for cooling, they are mostly fake. The grill alone will prevent me from buying this vehicle. To think I have to have to wait 5 more years before I see the next generation G80 might be too difficult of a wait. I'd hate to jump ship but I may have to. I've seen other car gurus complain of the new bigger grills on other brands. Just my thoughts.
I like the shape of the car. It doesn’t look like any other sedan out there. I don’t like the split headlights and taillights. It is form over function. Not my cup of tea.
Problerm is that it looks like a Crysler/Bentley,etc and doesn't have it own design Identity to stand out! The reason BMW, Audi, etc sell is cuz they made sure the design was unique, perfect proportions... and nothing looks cringy.
Not sure why you can't tell but the lights is the most iconic design on this thing. Quad lines front and back, very cohesive and especially striking at night. Not to mention that superman shield grill, it's controversial but undoubtedly unique. I have to agree it got little bit of Bentley vibe going around with all the chrome bling-bling but as a whole it's pretty distinctive looking sedan in my eyes.
Great style and a great all-around vehicle. Yes, I very much like it but will be buying a Lexus. Why? The dealership that is located 90 miles away does not offer what I would term strong support. They sell many other auto manufacturers and they consider this back shelf, and i fear with accompanying bad service. Seems like the Genesis Dealership network model really sucks in general. And yes, this dealership also carries Kia. So sad.
Not to be a party pooper, but none of the people that design any Genesis vehicle lives here in the US. All of the head designers live in South Korea the mainland where Genesis is headquartered. Luc Donckerwolke and Sang Yup Lee were the two head designers for this G80 and GV80 SUV. Both of them came from Bentley originally. Genesis may have some designers headquartered here in the states however the concepts and final product come from the heads in South Korea.
don't like pre-pre-pre production car impressions. I would like to see actual production models so see what I would actually potentially buy. If you can't drive the car its like doing a phone review without calling
Of the East Asian manufacturers, Lexus and Acura are doing okay, but I wish that Infiniti were to move in the same direction as the aforementioned as well as Genesis. Infiniti needs a comeback so badly. As for Genesis, they haven't built up a reputation of having panache associated with yet, so I wouldn't buy one, but they are a value for what you get for sure if you don't care about the badge on the front and rear.
This car just makes me happy
I dont see one element i specifically dislike. This car looks great, and all of the elements work well together.
Can't wait to upgrade 2021 G80. Currently driving G80
I'm literally liking every bit of the car
(Except for the grill.)

Love my Genesis. 48k trouble free miles so far.
You are so compelling to watch. You make it easy to be a car enthusiast
Wow! Thanks, Brandon!
I fell like 5 plus years shoppers should look into Lexus and Genesis. Those are the ones that I usually recommended
Funny, so do I:)
Love. Love. Love. One critique: I agree regarding the shifter.
Man I’m blown away by that review. You did an excellent job,and that’s a beautiful car.
"held together with chewing gum and spit" that really made laugh
That shot of the fog lamp on the lower bumper made me rewind the C8 comment.
Really glad to hear they're switching to a double wishbone setup up front, although they worked magic with the G70's Macpherson strut setup.
No, it's still a multilink setup just like the last gen.
The design element that I like the most here is the head and tail lights, it soo unique and different that I can't think of any other car that looks like it. I appreciate unique car design.
You got me with that “one more thing” there at the end
:)

My 1952 Buick had a bigger grill!
What 'blue' color is that from Genesis?
Saw a gray/silver one 3 weeks ago on Hwy 58 by their test track. Turned down in the road to the track gate

@@MotoManTV Thanks for the response, I'm going to check out your linked video shortly, I hope these agencies update the archaic regulations soon.
I like it.
For some reason I really dislike the sloping rear. I much prefer the classic sedan silhouette.
I love the car. I have the 2015 Hyundai Genesis. In this new car I like the front and interior. The hatchback look in the back is not my favorite part of it. I would prefer a bit more of notch back.
I have the 2015 too. I love it added 20 inch rims makes a big difference
Gorgeous:)
There will be the eG80 also, full electric.
I can't wait till you can drive them both
You and me both:)
The only design element I don't like about the G90 is that it isn't available here in Australia.
7:22 In the mean time, I take that MV Agusta F3 800 !!
🏍💨💨😍
Get in line:)
At least they’re offering a few dials. Audi’s are all touchscreen and the screen to change climate forces the driver to literally look down and completely of the road. If manufacturers are going to these touchscreens, they need to offer total voice command that works, even if CarPlay or Android are connected.
The infotainment is also a touchscreen for 2021, how could you miss that
I woudnt be surprised if they add a V8 sporty model later down the line.
Dr Nisu Unn When was the last time that Genesis did this?
That grille is.... well, IMPOSING. However, mounting a front license plate to it kind of ruins its "flow". The upper body crease that flows from the grille, across the hood and into the shoulders of the car makes me moist. I am sorry that the intoxicating rumble of the V8 engine is gone, however. Nicely done review, hopefully your feeling well.
I love this car but I am tired of 2.0 Turbos.. They should’ve kept the V8. That’s too much weight for a 4 cylinder
Theres V6 turbo.
Oh sweet!!! A spare tire!!! FREAKING AMAZING! Only thing is, no folding rear seats still. Major downer.
Thanks, Alex!
everything looks luxurious except the rims
Those rims are the same as a 1992 Dodge Viper rims.
A7 copy ?
does A7 have huge ass front grill like this car?
This will probably answer all your questions: ruclips.net/video/w4iV4NeDABc/видео.html
Looks like the limos from the final fantasy games.
I love the new G80 but as ridiculous as it sounds, I like the direction Acura is going with their grills such as the 21 TLX
It doesn’t sound ridiculous. Acura’s new designs are beautiful
@@RomaneMaticaliseGordon just saying cuz acura's reputation of their grill/beak. Glad they fixed it
1) They should kill the 90, who needs it and too expensive in this economy.
2) The 5 series should go down in size, same with the 3.
3) The reviewer is great. He's always filled with verbiage, and reminds me of Maxwell Smart/Inspector Gadget minus the overcoat.
Maybe I should get an overcoat . . . :)
Everything was fine until this moment:
🙃👉🏼 11:29 Prices !!
It's worth the money
S G Not at all !! That car will depreciate at least 50% after 1yr and You will take the hit...it’s a better option buy them used !!
@@junito1008 You only take a hit if you plan on selling.
The steering wheel is ugly, but I love the overall styling.
I'm so agree with you.
Genesis may have some designers headquartered here in the states however the concepts and final product come from the heads in South Korea.
doesn't that go same for any other international brands...??
@@mastertry1935 yup
g-80...good.
don't like pre-pre-pre production car impressions. I would like to see actual production models so see what I would actually potentially buy. If you can't drive the car its like doing a phone review without calling
Going with the turbo four, lighter setup, more fun around corners.
No German car hating yet? I guess I'm too early
