Hi David About 4years ago I bought a Zoom R16 and was close to bring it back to the store. Then I stumbled upon your tutorials and get the grip within hours. Santa dropped a Tascam DP32 down the chimney this year and I bought your tutorial right away, and a couple of hours later I was ready to roll. Just can recommend your work!!!
I don’t if anybody knows this or not, but if you plug a patch cable into the Effects Send1 jack, then plug the other end into any of the spare inputs on the back(A-H) you can then apply the different dynamic effects on different inputs. For example you can have a compressor on input A, a noise suppressor on input B, de-esser on input C, and an exciter on input D. I don’t even remember how I discovered this but it works. You don’t have to activate the inputs in the stereo bus either, just make the connection with a patch cable.
Thanks for sharing this. I have just bought a DP32 and it was like walking into an enormous maze! You need more than just a users manual to learn how to navigate your way around things sometimes and these sort of things help a lot :)
Note, you can't use reverb in the GUitar Effects window. But while in the Guitar Effects window, you can hit the F1 button to get to the SEND Screen. That's just for starters...
I've been having a lot of fun with the DP-24. I find myself sending things to the computer to tweak and then sending them back. I don't like not being able to "hear" specific editing points when using the jog wheel (at least I haven't discovered how to do it). I've had Tascam studios about 20 years ago where you could move and monitor to the exact point where you wanted to edit. Unless you're using the beat effects on the machine it takes a little more concentration. Thank God for the Undo History, that's all I can say.
So much better than Phil Tip videos. I can't stand the way easy things are put across as if... , and than a hard to learn thing is put across as if the glossary of words is an already understood thing. This is a good teacher here with ProAudioEXP talking it through. THANKS! ! ! ! Easy ... [Sorry Phil]
The dynamic effects info here is wrong, at least with the latest firmware. You can mix the dynamic effects across all eight inputs in any combination, provided you're not using the guitar effect. Make sure this is off AND unassigned in the mixer windows. CheckPhil Tipping's video tutorials via you tube or the Tascam forum for a thorough intro. I have the dp24sd and it's brilliant, once you know your way around...
I think you are correct . Use any dynamic effect on Input sources But if guitar effect is used on TRACKS then dynamics on INPUTS. are limited to two dynamics
The effects in the unit to me are the least useful part of the recorder. Being there are 2 effects sends, why not invest in even modestly priced outboard/rack effects? And take it a step further and add a mixer too and the sky is the limit... I just don't use everything "in the box" but these videos by David are extremely useful. I happen to have the DVD and it's much better than the white manual that Tascam has given us... ugh.
I’ve had my DP-24 for about 8 years now and I didn’t know you can use different dynamic effects simultaneously. Thanks for posting that info, I’m going to give it a try. As for external effects, I use them almost exclusively. I did discover (quite by accident) that on effects send 1 you can use internal and external effects simultaneously.
6:38 "DP24" and DP24SD have 18 tracks. 12 mono tracks and 6 stereo only tracks. DP32 and DP32SD have 20 tracks. 8 mono tracks and 12 mono/stereo selectable tracks.
Thanks for your help. I recorded multiple dry guitar tracks and was struggling to find a way to apply different guitar effects on each track for playback. This is totally skipped in the manual. So it's a little limiting, but how much can you ask for in this price range. It's still a great system overall. IS IT POSSIBLE to bounce a dry track to a new track with guitar effects applied to the new track? Essentially VIRTUALLY re-recording with effects.
Hit bounce button. Pick the track you want to bounce with the select button. The record button chooses the new track and add efx to the dry channel. Hit bounce again to get back.
HOW DOES THE MIDI WORK?? I'm considering buying the full tutorial, but the list of chapters did not specifically mention the MIDI implementation. The reason I purchased this recorder in particular is the MIDI I/O, which seems to have been completely abandoned on newer recorders from most manufacturers.
Why would my audio stop working for no reason , on my Tascam dp32 original with midi . When I push play the meters are jumping but gets no external audio sound . What is this ?
Porta 07 4 track...brilliant! This unit...sham. a 20 year old Akai DPS 16 kills this thing! Stop rushing things to market and trust in the power of a good product Tascam.
YO shakeAbooty88 .... QUESTION . what about using other MICs whiel PHANTOM power is on ? The manual says this could casue damage to DYNAMIC MICS ? I foudn this suprising considering on a MIXER BOARD you turn PHANTOM power on with out effect to other mics or lines usign COndenser mics , Dynamic mics etc. If this is true with the DP 24 you are lmited on channels even though there are 8 becuz you cannot plug a dynamic mic into CHANNELS A - D while PHANTOM power is on
I created my song " Stay the Night" on the Tascam DP 02. I wish this unit was available back then. I ended up selling the DP-02 and migrated to Studio: see my Song "True Polarity" to hear the difference. I think I spent more time being creative on the DP-02; though mostly improvising and I tried to be more precise using Studio 1. Maybe I will buy the DP-24 unit and use the software only to edit my tracks?
I need help putting mor then one effect on a single track? I lay a vocal track and will only let me apply one effect. I would like to have reverb and delay on one track?
You talk about if you want to setup compression on one source you need to use it on all of them. You can't have compression on one and a desser on the other for example. Can you use multiple dynamic effects on each track?
Can you add a "play" effect to more than one track at a time? For example, I added the compressor under guitar effects on track 2 after it was recorded and when I try to add that same guitar compressor to track 6 after it was recorded, it switches it off on track 2. It seems like it's only allowing this effect for one track at a time. Is there a way around this? Thanks
OK I'm just trying to put a little reverb effect on a mic for vocals to be recorded... What do I do then... I assume that such heavy artillery can quite easily do that... But I can't find the darn what!
I am new to music making and my question is can you mix beats of a computer and mix and master a cd useing the tascam dp 24 tascam porta studio digital recorder.
Hey Rob, I want to move up to the DP-24 from a DP-008. Q: Can I hookup a 8-Chan Mixer to the DP-24 so I can leave things plugged in and not have to keep plugging / Unplugging them? The thing that has me puzzled are the XLR 1/4" Combo Jacks on the DP-24.. I'm using 2-KAT KTPM1's that has a L & R [OUT] with 1/4" jacks on each for drums and a Yamaha MOX8. It would be nice to leave these plugged in. Can the DP-24 do this and if so HOW? I realize this post is old but it's all new to me :) Thanks
On my Tascam DP-24SD I was able to send a new song to my computer the first time but having trouble sending a second song to my computer with WAV format. It will send all the track to the computer in WAV but not the complete song? Crazy any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong.
On my dp32, if I select ONE effect or dynamic, ALL effects or dynamics go to ON. Then I get the message that I can only use one effect at a time, which is all I want to do in the first place! Is my machine jacked up or is it a user error?
can you add a dynamic effect to an individual track during playback i know you can do this with the guitar effects but i cant figure it out with the dynamics i could be missing something.
Couldn't find it in my manual (using a DP32), but can you set an event memory to auto-trigger EQ switch sets and effect switches at different mark points in a track?
I have and love my Tascam DP24. But it’s not really a 24 tracks recording device . At best it’s 18 tracks. The so-called stereo tracks are not true stereo tracks. You cannot address different info to them. They can’t be panned separately. So say we take the 13/14 stereo track, you can’t record guitar on 13 and bass on 14. You can’t have 13 panned fully left and 14 fully right. These limitations go all the way to track 23/24. If I am mistaken I would be grateful if tell me how to individually record on to 13 and 14; 15 and 16, 17 and 18 and so on.
@shakeAbooty88 How do you set the values on the in/out on the track edit function? I can access copy, paste, silence, etc and select the track but cursor arrows don't get me to the in/out...
That's probably the best question I've read on here. I would imagine you can. Perhaps you could use it as a sound board, assigning all your drum prices into different inputs. Then try using the BOUNCE effect and assign all the levels to the track you want it bounced to.
I have a BR-1180 and a DP-32. I find the Boss way more user friendly, but I've had it for over 10 years and could probably use it blindfolded. The Tascam I've had for 2 or 3 years and I've hardly used it. Recorded a couple of live gigs and jams, but that's about all. The Boss has hundreds of easily accessible effects. I can't even find the ones on the Tascam. Also, a finished cd on the Tascam seems to have a significantly lower volume than normal cds, and I haven't figured out how to fix that yet. Then again, the cd drive on my Boss stopped working years ago. I just line out to a mp3 recorder. Love my Boss. Need to get to know my Tascam.
Look into the Tascam 2488 Neo. Its the older model to this. I used it for 2 years and you will have more control then you need for hip hop. Very great machine.

drrobotnikmeanbeanma Yup. It has a ton of Compressor presets, or if your the hands on type you can start doing your thing manually. All in all, the vocals can be mixed and mastered and sat into a beat perfectly with the Neo. Best machine I ever used hands down.. I would use it any day over any computer based software. If you want max control over your vocals make sure the mic is in a 100% sound proof environment. Me, I actually took a cardboard box, poked a hole in 1 side and slid my boom stand up the hole and had 4 inch foam on inside the box... Do it, you'll be amazed.

@@mrblister8359 You can use outboards. The effects on this are ok but you're limited too much, but remember you can bounce tracks and add as many internal effects as you like. Just takes time.

I cannot get a straight answer! Does this multi recorder have amp modeling? Distortion Clean Slight level distortion...etc Musicians friend couldn't even tell me! I want a multi recorder that offers amp modeling! Help! Jesus is Lord!
Yes, it does. But its mainly like the video says. You can go distortion with a cab or tone of choice in, and have the reverb or delay on the send. Or you can add the reverb latter. Place I'm kinda stuck is can you record the reverb also on the take, and use delay latter on the mix??

Yes, it does. But its mainly like the video says. You can go distortion with a cab or tone of choice in, and have the reverb or delay on the send. Or you can add the reverb latter. Place I'm kinda stuck is can you record the reverb also on the take, and use delay latter on the mix??
If one cannot use more than one effect per channel - that is a total failiure of manufacturing imo.
This man is NOT good at teaching because he does not rehearse and so has to correct himself. That's bad for a pupil's concentration.
