I'm getting the 32 track version. I learnt the art of home recording 25 years ago on a 4 track Fostex cassette recorder, then upgrading to an 8 track Tascam, then eventually an 8 track digital Roland. I like the feel of the sliders!

I started on a tape tascam portastudio back in the 90s i wish i had another unit like that in mint condition i could do a lot of fun tricks with the tape. Im really thinking of buying one of these because I love just plugging in a bunch of mics and laying down drum tracks on a machine like this vs a computer.

This was one of the most informative demonstrations that I've seen on here lately. You covered most of he main features and what they do. And you answered one very important question, and that IS,why would someone want too buy this recorder when there is so much computer based recording DAW's available. Your answer was just excellent!! Sometimes you can capture everything you want to record with the almost minimum amount of equiptment and get the same results in quality of sound. I know ,because I have the previous model to this machine and haven't been happier.

Got a DP 32, after really liking stuff I was able to do with a Boss BR 800 (8 track) I'm loving this machine. I'm old school too, use to mess with tape based Tascam 4 tracks back in the day. Computer recording is great but PCs can get finicky, this is just awesome to step away from the PC and so far I'm getting much better results. But you can never stop learning, so thus im watching any vid, or what others have done, etc etc and re going over the manual a billion times. But that time is starting to be worth it.

same here love capture live jams and edit later on computer in another session. I hate having to mess with a computer and DAW while playing live as having to pause stop and start playing kills my creativity and workflow.

Great review and helpful basic presentation of this fantastic board. I too have been a DAW user for over a decade, but have decided to return to my roots and cut out all the computer distraction as I realized that life is too short to be messing around with 100 possible digital plug ins. Your review reminded me how easy it easy to get back into it. Thanks.

Just want to say that I own one of these (the SD card version, not the CD one as reviewed here) and I've had no problems with it at all. The onboard fx are better than you would think, and the audio quality it excellent. It's really easy to use - I use it as a sort of musical notepad, but to be honest the quality is good enough to do much more serious stuff if you want to. One gripe is that you can't use a lot of fx at once - you probably will need a couple of bits of outboard to compensate for this, but hey - for the price this thing is crazy good value for money. Never regretted buying it, and I'm real hard to please lol.
Oh yeha - a realy REALLY annoying thing is that there is no output for a larger monitor - would have happily paid extra for that !

Was thinking the same thing. It makes much more sense having a dedicated recording device but with the mod cons of a PC DAW. There is plenty of room in this form factor as you can fit a top of the line DAW on a laptop... similar size. Why havn't they done this yet! I would be first in line to buy this.... It sux trying to record and mix with a mouse, it clunky as slows down work flow.

I have had a dp24 for about a year now and I wouldn't take anything for it! I love it! I've also had a zoom and they to have a great sound. The only reason I like the tascam better is I think the tascam has a more naturally high definition sound rather than like the zoom which is more of a generic condensed sound. Just my opinion. Doesn't mean anyone has to agree.

I also have the DP-02 and I love both of them

I am a pretentious fellow trying to record my songs, one instrument at a time. I have an earlier 8 track version of Tascam Portastudio and loved to work with it. Moved to Logic in a Macbook. I was kind of liking it but then I upgraded my Mac OS and the instrument interface ceased to be recognized by the computer! I then returned to my old Tascam and it felt so good... As the guy in the video says... it is simple and you do everything. I am buying this 24 track improved version of Tascam. Can't wait to start playing with it...

I purchased the DP-32SD 2 plus years ago-I love the unit and combined with the proper outboard gear i.e. compressor and effects(I recommend the PRO VLA 2 compressor)you can make great crystal clear recordings. The effects(compressor, reverb, delay, and guitar) built into the unit are great and completely usable I should mention but still a good idea to use some outboard equipment as well).Has great editing capabilities and so easy to learn and use-this is the recording unit for those who prefer hardware to software and I suspect learning and mastering this unit's features is alot easier for the average musician than mastering any of the computer software.

    • @truthwinseverytime8805
      @truthwinseverytime8805 2 года назад

since there is no effects return for the effects send, are you returning into one of the open channels? Or are you putting the outboard gear in the signal path before the DP24?

  • @JFairweather
    @JFairweather 6 лет назад +2

I started out with the original back in 1980. Focused is right. I found myself rocking through non-stop for 13 hours. The more i did the more ideas and the more lush the production. Naturally, the DP 24/32 is far more sophisticated. The learning curve (when compared to the ancient machine) is substantial and not particularly intuitive. For example, the main faders are not for everything. When recording you use the LCD and the wheel to control a virtual on-screen fader. Also, there is a fair amount of complexity to the routing, so you may end up spending time studying the flow chart as you go. Something that I brought forward from the old machine was creative thinking. If, for example, a single effect is not enough, you can bounce a track with the effect and then run the bounced track through again.
This machine does not provide automation. Because of this, much of what I do starts out on this machine and then I import the tracks into a DAW. Most people wouldn't have to do this, but some of my more exoteric stuff benefits from automated changes in pan, volume, and effects (such as backing off the reverb when playing a solo with time-based effects).
Note that the most recent version of the DP824/32 does not have MIDI or a CD burner. As for sync, I have a set of SMPTE wav files for various tempos, which I drop into an empty track and then can make use of later in my DAW.
I'm glad to see TASCAM still in the PortaStudio business. For those of us who get a little tired of DAWs and piles of gear and cables all over the place, and are more into the spontaneous creation of music, a PortaStudio is a great way to go..

I bought a Tascam 8 track portastudiothat recorded to cassette in 1994. It was $1200 and then I needed to buy a compressor, and other equipment that this model has built in. It's incredible that this model can do so much for $500. I don't like recording with a laptop and software because it's too perfect and I feel that the musicality and realness of the music is eliminated because it can all be "fixed". All those subtleties are what makes music great. I will be purchasing one of these beauties in the VERY near future!

    Great video with great information!
If the Tascm DP - series is your platform of choice, I think it should be noted that there's a great DVD series on how to use them. The DVD's are by David Wills and they're called "Tascam DP-24 Tutorial."
    Ironic, right! Haha
I think I paid $30 for the set and they cover EVERYTHING that the dysfunctional manual does not.
It certainly paid off, as the short-cuts, and the bonus information here is outstanding and honestly, the machines should come with them!
Anyhow, I still revert back to them at times, as there really is a lot these units can do. Also worth noting is that Davis Wills is truly approachable and will answer any other questions you may have about these units and music in general. He's worked with the best of the best in the industry too.
Everyone should check these out, or at least look here on RUclips for his short Demo Videos on the DP series and more. These units are pretty slick for what you can do!

    Excellent video.
This is a great unit... period!
Price is affordable too, once you realize what you've gotten and what you can do with it.
Ease of use and functionality is perfect for the Home Recording Studio and personal projects.
Sound is phenomenal! What goes in comes back out. No hiss, crackle, or pops, either.
All in all, a no-brainer for demos, projects, etc. Too many good things to list and very few cons.
I personally don't care for the onboard effects and don't use them, but they're there if you need 'em.
I do however use the 2 effects send/returns, and use my outboard rack of pro effects, etc and I've gotta say that it sounds much better than the demos we would do back in the late 70's / 80's.
A really powerful little unit that gets the job done and then some! I've had mine for 3 or 4 years and never a problem. I've made an enormous collection of music on mine and as I'd said before, "what goes in, comes back out." Especially if your using good equipment such as mics, effects, etc.
If you're new to recording, a seasoned pro, or just want a way to record and add vocals, instruments, drums, or whatever, at a later date, you'd be hard pressed to find anything better for the price. And IT'S PORTABLE! Computers and software are a great platform too, but if you're new to recording and don't know what to expect, strap yourself in. You're gonna be impressed! All this power for such little coin is inspiring to say the least.
    Enjoy folks!
BTW- GREAT presentation! All musicians should have one of these!

I think I made a mistake, by buying the Zoom R8!!!!! As I don't have a computer, and didn't want to do cubase le, or Daw . This seems the closest to the old school type tascam cassette multi tracks I had in the past!!!!! I love the idea of the stand alone audio workstation...multi tracking with no computers, yeah I agree, with previous comment, computer used for porno, multi tracking 100% better in my humble opinion, especially when all that software, computer style composing is not for me!!!

24 has 12 mono tracks and 6 stereo only tracks. 32 model has 8 mono tracks and 12 select-able stereo/mono tracks. Dont buy the 24 model unless you can deal with the 6 fixed stereo tracks. Also, current dp24sd and 32sd models do not have cd burners or midi. But they have no moving parts and they can easily sync with older mpc sequencers.

I love this thing. True, it doesn't have the editing power of a DAW ie, switching out different sounds, drums, guitars for different styles, copy and pasting is easier on a DAW -- but the Tascam is more fun to use. You lose the ability to quantized drums, and such, unless you have some sort of sequencer I guess. But you can always do the drums on a computer, say, using EZdrummer, and fly them into the Tascam, and rely on your musicianship to get the groove down. I do find using the Tascam helps me to focus on becoming a better musician, guitarist, pianist, etc. But you can overdub. The copy and paste functions are a bit tricky. I love my iMac and my Logic Pro X setup. I use that for writing material that may have to be changed quickly, like when I'm writing for TV and film.
I'd probably definitely prefer the Tascam for live recording...hands down. Also, it never freezes up on me, tell me my hard drive is too slow, or that I'm missing files, or that my Focusrite interface just shut off. Ha ha. You'll always have headaches. But honestly, I've ever only had one issue with the Tascam. It came from Japan, I guess and they sent a Cheap SD card. I got error messages. Once I bought better SD cards, never had a problem. I have one of the last with MIDI, I love connecting my Roland DR880 to it and syncing up. I paid $600 fo mind back in 2012; much cheaper now. Heres a song I did on it: ruclips.net/video/Q4PNxTlvASI/видео.html

If you record stuff correctly on this platform the exported stems are good enough to be exported and worked on in any professional studio mix/master etc. But with a bit of external gear you can get very professional results. I always use mine in 24 bit mode for highest quality, but uses more space on the SD card. But the cards are so cheap it’s really not an issue. If you are new to recording it takes a bit of getting used to, but there’s loads of great tutorials on RUclips. The manual doesn’t really explain everything that well.

Best Tascam related video I've seen. Thank you for this very well presented and interesting review. I own a DP-O2 Portastudio and am desperately seeking help with how best to create a Master version of a recorded song. The instruction manual is not very clear. Main difficulty is in setting up point in and point out. Then how to 're do it if the sound wasn't right. Grateful for any advice.

dukeofpearl , I totally agree with you!!!!! I guess I still love the OLD school way of multi track recording, of course digital instead of tape sounds much cleaner 100%. I do not like using software, cubase, Daw, etc and am not too much into computers... Shit, got got a Zoom R8, still in box but was investigating and it does all kinds of usb inter facing, sequencing, looping, and uses cubase LE, daw etc... I think I will sell it, or give it to my brother, as he is into all that computer stufff, and I will save for the Tascam DP 24 SD!!!!!!!

    •  7 лет назад +5

Lefty, you don't have to use all those computer related things with the R8. Just use it for multi tracking the old school way, and you'll be happy (maybe?). I just got one about a week ago, and I like it.

For me is important, that the Multitrack can Audio Quantize, Midi to record Synthesizer and has got enough Prozessorpower to use Effects on every Single Track. Is this possible with R20/DP32?
Further more I need the possibility to import Midi and Audiotracks from extern to practice Guitar or play (record in clean) with Amp Models like Boss BR 80 and continue working in DAW. Is this possible here?

What I'm having trouble understanding about going dawless, is say you have a track that has two or more snares or hi hats or kicks, etc, on one track, how would you mute just one single instrument sound/part if they are on the same track? Or can't you do that. Does 24 tracks mean that a kick is one track, a snare is the second track, a hi hat is the third track, and if so, well what if you have more than 24 sounds/tracks that you have to use in one single song? This is where I am absolutely confused?

I just bought one of the dp-24sd. I found the preroll section but I'm not getting a preroll in a way that I get four clicks before the actual play head moves and record starts. That's what I'm looking for. Instead no matter what I set it at, record starts immediately upon pressing the record button when I have a track armed. Is it possible to have the preroll as a count-in to give lead time before recording actually starts on the dp-24sd?
