    I have finally found a site that takes you through the entire process clearly and concisely. You’ve done excellent work here, plus you’re a wonderful musician! I’ve been recording for years, but on older digital equipment (Zip disks anyone?). Yes, the documentation states to never remove or insert SD’s while powered up. This is mainly due to surges and (TEAC/TASCAM) CYA regarding program material loss. It’s a good point to make, however could be clearly made a little more eloquently, in my opinion. Anyway, on the same line, if you have a song recorded on your 24, and you take your SD to your friends’s (or better yet, producer’s), and put it in their 32 to play it will be reformatted to the 32’s OS and you will not be able to retrieve the song file to play back on your 24.

      You will make mistakes, so the sooner you get in there and start messing around, the quicker you'll make mistakes and learn how it all works..... And the best way to learn is just by getting stuck in and doing stuff. Record a few tracks, record some more tracks and layer it all up, add some effects, reverb etc - mess with the settings and you will learn as you go... just have fun, that's what it's for!. :)

I wanted to get to the master tools and they left out the step where you need to record start to finish, and then, the mastering tools are available. What about deleting a song all together after you record for the first time BEFORE mix down.

    • @DigitalDoxology
      @DigitalDoxology  Год назад

      Thanks, glad you found it helpful. I only use the undo button once in a while - I find it easier myself to just go back and record over the track instead, which achieves basically the same. I’ve never tried to delete the whole song before before the mix down (unless I suppose I just thought the whole mix sucked and just wanted to redo the whole mix, lol. I’ve done that once in while.

    • @louisvalentino5110
      @louisvalentino5110 Год назад +1

      @@DigitalDoxology I tired to delete the whole song but it would not let me. I put down about 4 separate tracks. I have one I really like as it is all syth instrumental only unsing one sound pad, but then I found out through your video you could change from 16 bit to 24bit which I didn't know to change at the start of creating the song. I was thinking of deleting the whole song and just start off from the beginning and change it to 24 bit. Do you think it's worth it with all the the mix down bells and whistles and the master tools? Also, the volume levels were 50% lower when I used the master tools on the only song so far i've mastered. I liked the volume of the mix down and not with the master tools. Maybe there's somthing i'm not doing with the master tools that I should have done to get the volume at the same level as the mix down. Thanks for all your time. Lou.

    • @DigitalDoxology
      @DigitalDoxology  Год назад

      @@louisvalentino5110 Low volume might be due to the EQ levels you had in mastering mode - or, you could skip the mastering tools in the Tascam for a while and load your stereo mix from the SD card into Audacity or something like that and see if you can get a better master that way. Try different things and see what you like. Good luck 👍

      @louisvalentino5110 Год назад +1

      @@DigitalDoxology So, you don't think deleting the song track and starting over because I did it in 16 bit rather than 24 is worth it?

    • @DigitalDoxology
      @DigitalDoxology  Год назад +1

      @@louisvalentino5110 Hum, well here's a suggestion, first before you delete anything you have created - do this as an experiment - try recording a short passage in both formats - then listen back to each of them on a good sound system and see if you can hear any difference. Some folks have better hearing then I do, but honestly if you're using top of the line audio gear to record with (Yamaha, Roland, Korg etc.) chances are it will be hard to tell the difference between 16bit and 24bit. Now, that being said - 24 bit is the higher quality but it comes with a trade off - it eats up space in memory on your SD card and internally in the Tascam. If you're not worried about space, go for it and record everything in 24bit from here on out. You've got the ability to record in 24bit - so why not! I think ultimately it's all a matter of personal choice in the end.

When you hit the "mixer" and that EQ screen comes up, can you use the things in this while you're recording or is this just for the "mastering" stage?. Am I "assigning" wrong? Thank you so much for your help. That is strange… never had that happen to me before, when I read the forums here’s what I found. The DP has a setting you can set in the menu that will let it power off after a set time period of non-use unless you have a track triggered (lit up red) to record. I’d check that first- check your AC power adapter and cord next if problem continues. But, I’ve never heard of it coming back on after being shut down 🤨 now, if you’ve checked everything and nothing else seems to be awry- then as long as it doesn’t shut down during use, I would continue using it but observe it as you shut down etc. definitely weird for sure 🧐

    If you make a mistake in the mixdown, like you wanted to fade a channel sound but went to earlier... do you just rewind and start over? As far as effects go, reverb, delay, EQ. Do you do all that BEFORE YOU do final mixdown? Can I apply reverb when I start recording on voice mic or instruments?

    • @DigitalDoxology
      @DigitalDoxology  Год назад +1

      Yes, take care of any little details you want before you do your final mixdown. If you mess up - it's not really a big deal - you'll just have to re-do the mixdown a second time (or third even). It will erase over the previous mixdown. I think its best to save the vocal mix as the last thing and then use the reverb for it just like the instruments - you can only use just so many effects at one time (I think it's two) per channel/mix. I've gone back and re-recorded mixdowns on occasion due to something was just off and didn't feel good about it. lol! At least I'm not paying by the hour right? lol.

    Equipment wise:
    I currently have two digital grand pianos with very few effects as midi controllers. I prefer playing live than messing with all those virtual instruments; HOWEVER, I would like to access all of those midi instruments available via the midi controllers.
    One piano has a USB C midi plug connection socket, the other has standard Midi in Midi Out. (No thru)

    Access daw midi instruments and record, mix, master using Tascam, import to ipad for further tweaks, distribution.
    Connect Tascam to Ipad Air 5th Gen using Studio Itwo Interface,
    Connect following to something:
    1 electronic drumset
    1 vocal mike Baby Bottle w xlr plug, phantom power,
    1 SM57 Instrument mike
    2 digi pianos as midi cntrols
    3 Guitars
    1 Bass
    4 Percussion

    How do i connect the hardware? What patch cables do I need to run where?

      Hi there, It sounds like you have a lot going on - my best tip is remember you can only record up to eight tracks or inputs simultaneously, but you can bounce tracks onto other tracks later (over dub) etc. with all you want to record- I usually start with laying down the most important tracks first, Drums, keys and bass - then vocals, synths and additional percussion etc can be added second and so on. Save mastering and final mix to the end. Best wishes for your project!

    I have a question for you : on the display there is written in green word and numbers , the remaining time available to end the recording session ; before pressing the recording buttons to start the recording , usually we can read " 90 minutes" , but once we start recording ( tracks engaged ) the time goes immediatly down to ''5 or 6" minutes left . Usually our songs are pretty long, so , how can we avoid that the recording session will stop automatically by itself? The Italian manual does not explain how to take care of this problem . The SD card inside the Dp 32 is a Sandisk pro , the most expensive , 32 gb . Can you clarify how to resolve this situation? I appreciate your help . Thank you so much, have a happy new year. • @DigitalDoxology
      @DigitalDoxology  Год назад

      I have read through the manual myself and cannot find any exact information on the time limits on recording etc. Not surprising really. I recently reformatted a new 32gb card and it shows a time (in green) of 100:26 - I assume that's 100 minutes, 26 seconds total recording time - as soon as I activate a track (set it to record, and it turns red) then the time will show 6:45 - and that doesn't change no matter how many tracks I activate. I don't believe it will shut down on you after 6min and 45sec of recording however... I have recorded songs longer than that and have never had that happen. I am not really sure what the Tascam is trying to tell us with that number and can't find any info (not yet anyway) on this. So I would say give it a go, and see what happens lol! I think it will keep recording as you play just fine until you hit the stop button to finish recording. The numbers will adjust as you continue recording and saving them on the SD card. Also, I erase unused tracks (record over them) since they will be counted in the total space available. This is a really good question that the manual never to my knowledge addresses, since I know folks who like to set up and record live sessions that can sometimes run 45 minutes or more!

    • @DigitalDoxology
      @DigitalDoxology  Год назад

      Update - I just checked on the Tascam forums - it's not 100 minutes of recording on a 32gb card it's 100 hours! and 6 hours 45 minutes total if you record on all tracks (it's basically an estimate of total remaining time available!) that's good news right! So, go on and record away! lol!

The only limiting factor on recording with a microphone vs. direct input (and you probably know this already) is the background sound you pick up when you’re using a microphone. I had trouble with that myself so don’t feel bad - the manual is not really helpful either - I finally figured out, 1 make sure you have your vocal set to the correct source (A-H) along with setting the mixer to the same. Now, there’s two options for effects, eff 1 and 2, off and on. You can only run one effect at a time for each (I believe) I had to play with these a bit then just stumbled on it after a fashion but it worked. Master sends are only used when you want the effects in the recording mix, I’m still not 100 sure on how this works exactly but did a few recordings with vocals and it seemed to work ok. I’m sure a recording engineer could explain this better but hope it helps… sometimes I just have to keep playing around and experimenting with things until it works! Lol!

      Well that’s a great (but complicated) question - I’m sure if you asked a hundred keyboardist that same question you’d get a hundred different views…in simple terms the sequencer gives you more precise control of everything overall over a straight multitrack recording. Example: you can go back, edit and remove any wrong notes or rhythms played without having to redo the entire track. You can also do that with a recorder, it’s just harder. Sequencers are limited on time length of songs… you could theoretically record for several hours only limited on your onboard memory space like maybe live recording. Like I said it’s complicated.

    Hi Dave. How can we mix tracks and compile to one or two tracks. Frees up more room.

    • @DigitalDoxology
      @DigitalDoxology  Год назад

      You can easily mix or bounce tracks on the Tascam and compile everything down to a two track stereo mix, but why would you want to? It might save some room, but you’d lose ability to tweak the individual tracks for your final mix down. On the DP-24, you have 12 mono tracks (1-12) and six stereo tracks (13-24) for a possible 18 total tracks. In theory you could mix tracks 1-22 down to the last stereo tracks (23-24) delete all the rest and then continue recording more on tracks 1-22 and so on… but you would lose your ability to go back and change something later in the first stereo mix. I wouldn’t worry about saving room since 32 Gb SD cards are pretty cheap these days and give yourself freedom to tweak everything as you please up to the final mix. Now, it might make sense to bounce say your guitar mix a time or two in order to keep adding different effects to the mix… I hope all that makes sense - if you really need more tracks, you might want to consider the DP-32 or going to a software based DAW instead.

      So many possibilities, so many questions - what are you recording from? Keyboard or guitar, microphone or ? Your monitor speakers, headphones? Without knowing your particular set-up it’s hard to say. Try different output speakers or headphones, if you can. Check you guitar or keyboard and make sure they are EQ’d like you want before you start. As a basic rule - I start with everything EQ’d flat across the board and if I make any tweaks, start with mid-range and go in small increments usually bringing them down in mid-range first, since most small speakers handle mids just fine then gradually bringing in the lower and upper ranges as needed. Play around with it more before you start recording. It’s possible, but not likely that you have a bad unit - just something in your mix that needs checked out. Hope this helps- keep trying different things.

    Can the recorder sync to a external sequencer to record individual tracks for one song?

    • @DigitalDoxology
      @DigitalDoxology  10 месяцев назад

      No it cannot do that. At one time they could - There are some older units by Roland/Boss/Tascam etc. that used to have a midi sync in/out feature - but that was basically eliminated several years ago by the manufactures of these units since the rise in popularity of the DAW's along with the limited need for such a feature since most keyboard workstations now have their own built-in sequencers to handle that function - so there's no reason to really have that feature in your recorder. IF you're looking for that feature - you might be able to snag an older Tascam DPS with built-in midi sync for sale on Ebay or Reverb etc. - good luck.

From there you could load them into Audacity or ProTools, Logic Pro etc. and work with them that way. I assume you're asking about setting the in/out points for your song - here goes, don't set any points until you are completely finished with all tracks etc. and are ready to master your song - it's important to press the "Mark-Set" button at the very beginning of your song (00:00) then go to the very end of your song say 05:00 or whatever it may be and then press the "Out" button once, that should set it so that when you are mastering the song - it should stop at the exact place you specified in the out point. There is a similar - but different way to set up multiple songs but I rarely use it. Sometimes, if I want to record more than one song, I will just leave a few seconds of blank space between tracks and then use Audacity to cut and paste the tracks up individually etc. Hope this helps, thanks for watching.

However, it's also wise to back up your data as often as possible on other media (PC or portable drive) and never rely exclusively on your SD card under any conditions. I've had SD cards go corrupt on me that were never removed (in other digital audio recorders, cameras, GoPro's etc.) and they were fairly new cards too which is why I try to stick with name brands on memory cards anymore. Depending on how many tracks you record with - you can squeeze quite a few songs on a 32 gb SD card - but I recommend having several Cards on hand and swap them out after about 8-10 songs. Sir, I just bought a Roland Fantom. I did a lot of research before buying it. However, it seems that the sequencer does not allow me to record my songs in real time by playing my songs completely through from beginning to end. Or at least I haven't comprehended it yet. It seems all it wants to do is loop a bunch of nonsense and drum patterns that I do not want. I don't write songs that loop parts over and over and over. I write decent songs that has a beginning, verses, chorus, bridge and an end. I am old school. So after spending $3700 for this Fantom, I wonder if I made a mistake. I am very old school. I want to record my individual instrument sounds on separate tracks and then mix them down into a master as you did. It seems this Tascam multi track recorder will do what I want to do. BUt my question to you is, you created your song pattern on the TR Rec on your fantom 0, instead of playing the piano live from beginning to end. Does this tascam multi track recorder allow me to play my individual instruments on each track and mix them together to complete my song? Am I able to set a click and play the piano completely through from beginning to end on one track, and then lay down a bass on another track, and then strings or guitar on even another track and then mix them down to a master? I know I might be repeating myself but I am not a techno guru when it comes to the recording, mixing and editing of songs. I can only write them and play them. Do I need to invest in getting a Tascam multi track recorder? Or does my Fantom allow me to record all of my piano and other sounds on separate tracks and then mix them down through the sequencer? I am somewhat lost on this. Thanks for any advice you can give me.

      Hi there, sorry it took me so long to get back to you - your comment didn't show up on my regular feed for some reason. Anyway, I understand your situation and you are correct about the sequencer - I love Roland, but dislike their approach to the new sequencer on their Fantom. However, there are workarounds that you can do to help. Your limit on Fantom is 64 bars of material on a single "Pattern" or track. This is fine if you want a song that's less than 64 measures, but not if your song goes over that. So, yea a DAW or Tascam DP would let you record a complete 15 minute piece in one pass using say a piano pad sound then you could go back and layer in a new sound on top of that on a new track etc. etc. until you have what you want. You can also plug your Fantom into a DAW and do the same thing as well. Your Roland will excel at creating beautiful sounds, layers etc - and yes you can record on one pattern the piano track along with a click or simple drum pattern then go back on another pattern and layer the Bass, Guitar, Strings and synths etc. just fine - as long as it doesn't go over 64 bars! you might then have to break your song into two parts if that's the case - bummer I know but it could be done and them put the two together in the end using the "song" function in the sequencer.
      The way I record a lot of my songs, is by recording a short intro on Track One, then using track 2 lay the main piano/pad down until I want a new section, then start another track right where the last leaves off etc. or just continue layering and layering as I go. I love sequencers, but sometimes its so much easier to say "F-it" and just do it manually instead cause I love to do things on the fly rather than be constrained. lol!
      I hope this helps a bit - You've got the main foundation there in the Fantom that's for sure and everything else will work itself out. Best wishes and keep me posted. - DF
