@Invert Your Cross Microphones generally have a very low, unusable output. I strongly recommend using a pre-amp whenever you’re recording using a mic with the DP-24. If that doesn’t work, try inputting the SM57 to a different source and test it to ensure it is not defective. If that still does not work, I would try testing all of the inputs on your DP-24 to make sure that the current input you are using on that unit is not a defective input channel. I hope this information helps.

I don’t know if any one has mentioned this, but send 1 can be used for both internal or external effects. Send 2 can only be used for external effects... Love your videos...
Using both send one and two might a allow sending stereo to the input of an external stereo effect. (Returns would go too DP inputs.) Would that only be possible for mono tracks? It seems like the stereo tracks don't have separate send levels for left and right.

This is great. I never really understood the external send but the loop now makes sense. Can you recommend any good, external effects modules for a (non-rack) home studio on a budget, please?
Most are rackmount, but remember you can take the ears off most rackmount units for desktop use. For economic reasons, I suggest going used. Both new and used devices in this realm sound the same, so I suggest a used Behringer FX2000. Lots of bang for the buck there and it’s a quality well-built unit that sound good. Thanks for watching and sharing. 👍🏿
@@PowercoatMusic Thanks again for your great videos and for replying to questions. I was wondering if you use anything between your effects sends and the fx unit since the sends are unbalanced. Does it make sense to use balanced cables anyway, and also to put a converter in between?
@@TheEndOfThings No, I don't use anything between the recorder and the effects processor. You can if you chose to but both devices are pro grade and good to go to work together without anything additional. Thanks for watching. 👍🏿
Can I record, using the EF2 effect (ext-reverb) directly onto the track, or is it just during mixdown that I can add the EF2 effect to the track? Thanks. Great videos BTW!! Cheers
You can do both. However, if you are recording the effect return from an external unit, ensure that you route that signal to a track/channel so it armed for recording. Thanks for watching. 👍🏿
This is a great tutorial and I learned how to connect one external effect (a harmonizer) to the unit. Is there a way to connect two different external effects to use on different channels ? Like using the external harmonizer on back up vocals and an external compressor on lead vocals or drums?
I feel that this question is more of a hardware question rather than a tascam question but if i wanted to compress 2 separate tracks differently would i need to connect two separate compressors? Or would 1 be enough. Thank you for the videos. They are a huge help!
Check out my video “Alesis 3630 Compressor Limiter with Gate: Why and How I Use It” on this channel. To answer your question, you could use this 1 compressor (for example) in this case to do what you’re asking. Thanks for watching and sharing. 👍🏿
@Parity is Uncertain yes you will need separate compressors if you want different settings on separate tracks, unless you have a compressor that has more than one channel. There are compressor units that have dual channels and more.
Am I able to add external processing on a track that has been already recorded? Possibly through a “Bounce”? Can I route the recorded signal out from my DP32sd through the processor and back in to an empty track?

Excellent video! Thank you for making this simple. I have a question and hoping you might be able to help me out. I've followed your directions. I can hear the effect when I'm recording a track. However once track is recorded the effect does not record with it. What am I doing wrong and what to do so when I'm recording a track the effect stays with it. I am using a Alesis Wedge for the external effects. Thank you,
Your issue sounds like you’re recording the source track of the recording as opposed to the external effects return track input (A-H). To achieve your goal, the track you will actually record will be the effects return input, A-H (assigned to the track you want to record) that you have coming from your external effects unit. Recording that track you should get your source track printed with the external effects on your recording. Thanks for watching and sharing.
how would I handle autotune with this unit I just bought one funny thing is I got one and returned it because it looked overwhelming but you inspired me to give it a shot I'm trying to build a professional studio that's mostly dawless Im gonna pair the unit up with mpc one and I may drop in tracked out beats from FL studio and I might pair it with a vocal processor
With autotune, follow the same rules as any other external effect you would configure using the directions presented. You may want to chain it to another effect. Follow the instruction in the autotune's manual and tweak to taste. Thanks for watching. 👍🏿
Hi Again, I am just about to re-introduce the Microverb 1. Mint condition and I miss it. The DP 24 Reverbs are not really good enough. I still want to record dry but not sure how to hook up the microverb. I always used it 'Live' previously.
I’ve had a DP24SD for quite some time but never learned to use it. I now primarily Logic Pro X, but recently had the idea of using the Tascam as an interface so to prevent from constantly changing inputs in my Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 interface. So for so good, but if you have any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. Great channel!
Thanks so much for your comments. The DP-24 makes for a very flexible interface in your case because it can serve as a general mixer and limited audio patch bay, but you already know this. Using external effects with the unit can further exploit that by adding virtually any new device tool. Lastly by using the Dynamic effect(s) on the DP-24 inputs, you can select either compressor, noise suppressor, de-esser, or exciter and apply it to one or all of the inputs (A-H). Good stuff.
Thank you sir. How many cables are used to hook-up the Tascam to a Behringer Virtualizer (in my case)? The video’s sound quality was poor so I may have misheard. I heard you say that one cable went from Tascam Effects 2 to an input on an effects unit etc., then I think you said that a second cable went from the output of the effects unit to an input (a choice of A to H) on the Tascam. If that’s so, then how were you able to assign two sources (E &F ?) on the Tascam and not just one? I followed your instructions, plugging the effects unit’s output into ‘G’ on the Tascam, but was only able to assign one source button - ‘G’. However, since you were able to assign two (E & F), were you plugging in two cables into the Tascam from the effects unit output ? Nothing’s worked for me so far, so I’d be grateful for your help!
hi there, excellent videos. i just bought the DP24. i have a digitech studio twin rack mount effects processor. i am missing something that must be very obvious. to everyone but me. i am plugging a mic into input A. Input G is where the effects processor is plugged into. but that's where it all stops for me. can't hear any effect, even after following your instructions exactly. the inputs are where i get confused. how does the mic work with the effects processor if they are both in different source inputs. do you have any videos that actually show this as you explain it? thanks for clearing this up. have a great day, Jim
A couple of things to try. Ensure that Input G is enabled first, and the volume is turned up on the effects unit. That's always a big "Gothcha" with this process. I hope this helps and thanks for watching. 👍🏿
Thanks for the great explanation. One question I have is that when I am initially recording a track, and I have to use the external effect, how do I do it so that after recording the track, in playback mode, I can hear the effect on the track, even if I switch off the external effect processor? I have set up the stereo loop just as you have shown. I am able to hear the effect as well, but after a recorded track is played back, it seems like if I were to use that same effect on a different track, and make changes to the effect, those changes are also applied to the previous track. Thanks for any help
What I do in this setup is I print the effect to the track. Simply, I record the effect I want on a specific track. Then, I can turn off the external effects loop for that track and use the external effects device as needed on the other tracks. I repeat this process for other tracks as needed. Thanks so much for watching, and I hope this information helps.
I watch this how to video and Dave Wills from proaudio when I got unit. I have 24 & 32 ran midi and both have cd burner within. You learn from both instructors
your videos are very informative wondering if you can connect 2 dp24 together to give you 16 inputs instead of 8 with just the one .. if so how and would the slave dp24 record to the master 24 sd card thankyou Mark
I do what you’re asking all the time. I have 2 of the 1st generation units that have MIDI and it’s easy. One is the master, the other the slave. You basically mix down both units to a mixer and record that stereo out to a 2 track digital recorder. Thanks for watching and sharing. 👍🏿
After I follow your instructions, should I be able to hear the external effects? Or only after I record it onto a new track? I don't hear anything. My external is the zoom R8 which has internal and send, and neither one I'm hearing. Pretty sure I've got the connections right. Occasionally getting feedback loops etc.
Yes, you should be able to hear the effects with the signal returning to the DP. If you cannot, then you either missed a step in the process or the signal level from the external effects device may be too low. Thanks for watching and sharing. 👍🏿
It all depends on what you’re trying to accomplish. Under normal circumstances the answer is “No”, regarding a direct return to a single channel on the DP-24 from your effects processor. For a stereo return you would use 2 channels on the DP-24. However, if you did not want to use 2 channels, a Y cable would be used to connect the 2 returns form your effects unit to a single channel of the DP-24, since the A-H inputs are all TRS. I hope this helps.
I have watched the video white a lot and find it good (although a bit fast). Would it be possible to do a video pièce about the connection of the external effect detachement (for is dummies) but after saying that I think I have learned a wee bit and thanks
I'm wondering if I've got to use two input tracks for a stereo return. The EFF2 output signal is mono, and routed to an effect box. Theoretically, If the effect box is mono, I'd need one input track to use as the EFX return, but if the effect box has stereo outs, do I need to use two input tracks? If I use two input tracks from a mono return, does that sound different from using simply one? I picked up a used DP24 (MIDI) and trying to get everything set up.
Ok, I tried this method and all I got was tremendous feedback in my headphones. I have one line going from Effects Send 2 to my Midiverb unit L input. And the two outputs of my Midiverb going into B and C on the DP32. And which fader controls the amount of reverb? And if I activate stereo bus B and C, I have to press the Stereo Select button to get more than one source button to light up at one time. So I dont know what I'm doing wrong
Yes, it matters. I have always believed one should use the best cables they can afford. Balanced cables offer much lower impedance signals, and a better signal-to-noise ratio with virtually no external noise or distortion over unbalanced cables. Thanks for watching. 👍🏿
@Mr. LD Yes, you're right. I think the best solution is to keep patch cables as short as possible, since I doubt that an unbalanced line could benefit from a balanced cable. And even in the case of an effects unit featuring a balanced input on the other side, the DP-24 TRS unbal send jack would short the shield line (jack sleeve) with the cold line (jack ring) anyway, thus, no use...
HI Sybil. First off, thanks for the great videos. I hate to harp on this topic but I find using external effects via send 2 on the Tascam DP-24 SD to be a very frustrating endeavor. I have a Lexicon MX200 that I'd like to use with the recorder. I meticulously followed your instructions and am batting zero. I connected the DP-24 effects send 2 out to the input of the MX200. I connected the output (L/mono) of the MX200 to input C on the Tascam. I further assigned input C to the stereo bus. I'm trying to add a reverb from the lexicon unit to one track and all I'm getting is feedback. Yes, I did put eff 2 to post for that track and turned up the effect level and master effect to 127. Nothing... but feedback (as I increase the input level on the lexicon). Would you, or someone who's been successful in using eff 2, be kind enough to go through the process again, specifically in regard to adding the lexicon effect to one track? I'm probably doing something stupid. However, it's paramount for me to add external effects as the internal ones are "lacking", in my opinion. Thanks so much in advance, Andre.
I can't advise you on the Lexicon specifically because I don't use or have one. However, below is the DP-24 External Effects Loop that works. If it's not working for you, you may need to check your cables, device settings, or maintenance your effects unit or DP-24. 1. DP-24 has 2 Effects Sends: a. EFF 1 - Goes ONLY to the unit’s internal send effect & the EFFECTS SEND 1 OUTPUT b. EFF 2 - Goes out through the EFFECT SEND 2 output ONLY i. EFF 2 is used to send audio to an external effects device, NOT EFF 1 2. Let’s look at how to set up External Effects with the DP24. You must first run cables from the: a. DP24 Effects Send 2 OUT -- to the input of you effects processor Then run cables from the: b. Effects Processor OUT to ANY unused Inputs of the DP24 (A-H) c. This creates an Effect Loop! 3. In this setup, you MUST: a. Go to the ASSIGN Screen b. In the “STEREO BUS” section, activate the inputs for the external effect return c. Do this by clicking the “SOURCE” buttons for those inputs d. Example: If effects returns are input using “E & F”, activate “E & F” on the STEREO BUS! - *Otherwise you will not hear any sound from the external effects device - Drove me nuts! e. Adjust the input TRIM during playback to manage the amount of the external effect to the DP24 f. This will now be a part of the main mix when mixing down g. *Make sure any non-used inputs are deactivated during mix down to avoid excess noise 4. Finally, to use the External Effect on track(s): a. SELECT the track on which you want to use the External Effects and Go to the MIXER section b. On the GREEN SEND tab, set EFF2 to POST, and adjust its effect level. This will be different for each track Selected. i. With the POST setting, the effect rides with the fader c. On the WHITE SEND tab, turn the MASTER Effect level (to 127). This is Global: Controls the EFF2 level for all tracks. d. Done I hope this helps.
@@PowercoatMusic Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. I think that my problem was using a single cable out (mono) for an effect that was in stereo. Take care, Andre.
@@PowercoatMusic Not only is the video good, but that informative comment is THE most clear, concise, detailed, and logical comment I’ve ever read; especially regarding any help or instruction. Thank you.
That depends on what you are doing as to whether or not it will make a difference or not. You can connect virtually any external effects processor you like to the unit. Thanks for watching. 👍🏿
I believe you should experiment with this setup to see which is best for you. You could run the cables the same way you would for any other effects processor mention in the video for your guitar tracks. However, I would initially suggest that if you want to print the effect on the recording that you try routing your guitar output to the GR-55 and the GR-55 stereo outputs to 2 mono inputs on the DP-24 for stereo guitar tracks. The GR-55 can also act as a pre-amp in this scenario. Again the best thing to do is try out a few solutions to see what works best for you. Please let me know what you did ultimately? 👍🏿
Good question. The internal effect is exactly that, and does not require an input. To answer your question, it all depends on how you configure your external effect connected to Send 2. From the external effect that is connected to Send 2, you can run either a mono or stereo return, depending upon that unit’s outputs and your requirements. This means that from your external effects device (Send 2), you could have either 1 or 2 returns back to the inputs of the DP-24 (example: C or both C & D). I hope this helps.
@@PowercoatMusic being that the send effects are mono, would that give off an stereo effect if i were to use send 2 as a mono effect? thanks for the quick response.
When a signal is sent from the Effect Send 2 output, that signal is managed by your external effects device based on the type effect setting/program you choose. If the chosen effect is a stereo effect, and the device has stereo returns (most do) then you must connect both outputs of the external effects unit to 2 of the DP-24 inputs to hear the true stereo effect you selected. If the effect you chose is a mono effect, then only 1 return from your external effects device to the DP-24 input is required. I hope this helps.

Sometimes these small things sneak past us. I hope this helps.

You’re most welcome. Thanks for watching and for your support, it is greatly appreciated. Wishing you the very best.
Send 2 to one processor, send 1 to a different processor. Or you can use the send 1 internal effects and send 2 out to your other effects.
Sure can
Hi. Will this be working this way with Alesis strike multipad or other drum pads like that? Or do i need to use it as a drum machine? Good job bro. :)
For more details on using drum machines and effects with this unit, check out my video, “Tascam DP24/DP32 Digital Portastudio: Recording Electronic Drums & Drum Machines” on this channel. Thanks so much for watching. 👍🏿

Hi Again,
I am just about to re-introduce the Microverb 1. Mint condition and I miss it. The DP 24 Reverbs are not really good enough. I still want to record dry but not sure how to hook up the microverb. I always used it 'Live' previously.
If you follow the directions to the letter in the presentation, I will work for the Alesis Microverb as well. Thanks for watching.
Good stuff.
Awesome! Thank you for the the information. Mark Bensette Aux Bois 🇨🇦.
If i wanted to use the DP02fx as my effects processor, what would be the best way to chain it to the dp24?
Thank you for this!
Thanks for watching.
I watch this how to video and Dave Wills from proaudio when I got unit. I have 24 & 32 ran midi and both have cd burner within. You learn from both instructors
your videos are very informative
wondering if you can connect 2 dp24 together to give you 16 inputs instead of 8 with just the one .. if so how and would the slave dp24 record to the master 24 sd card thankyou
Mark
Question? I am trying to connect a 32 band eq. do I need a Y connector to make it work?
It all depends on what you’re trying to accomplish. Under normal circumstances the answer is “No”, regarding a direct return to a single channel on the DP-24 from your effects processor. For a stereo return you would use 2 channels on the DP-24. However, if you did not want to use 2 channels, a Y cable would be used to connect the 2 returns form your effects unit to a single channel of the DP-24, since the A-H inputs are all TRS. I hope this helps.
How would you use the external effects on pre recorded vox?
From my perspective, I use external effects on everything that's pre-recorded so the process would be the same. Thanks for watching. 👍🏿
I scrolled down and read that yes, a stereo output external EFX box, will require two input tracks. Thank you.
Does it matter if I use a balanced cable when connecting my external effects to the unit and returning them?
Yes, it matters. I have always believed one should use the best cables they can afford. Balanced cables offer much lower impedance signals, and a better signal-to-noise ratio with virtually no external noise or distortion over unbalanced cables. Thanks for watching. 👍🏿
@@PowercoatMusic That’s what I feel also and what I do. I was just wondering since the effect send jacks are both unbalanced.
1. DP-24 has 2 Effects Sends:
a. EFF 1 - Goes ONLY to the unit’s internal send effect & the EFFECTS SEND 1 OUTPUT
b. EFF 2 - Goes out through the EFFECT SEND 2 output ONLY
i. EFF 2 is used to send audio to an external effects device, NOT EFF 1
2. Let’s look at how to set up External Effects with the DP24.
You must first run cables from the:
a. DP24 Effects Send 2 OUT -- to the input of you effects processor
Then run cables from the:
b. Effects Processor OUT to ANY unused Inputs of the DP24 (A-H)
c. This creates an Effect Loop!
3. In this setup, you MUST:
a. Go to the ASSIGN Screen
b. In the “STEREO BUS” section, activate the inputs for the external effect return
c. Do this by clicking the “SOURCE” buttons for those inputs
d. Example: If effects returns are input using “E & F”, activate “E & F” on the STEREO BUS! - *Otherwise you will not hear any sound from the external effects device - Drove me nuts!
e. Adjust the input TRIM during playback to manage the amount of the external effect to the DP24
f. This will now be a part of the main mix when mixing down
g. *Make sure any non-used inputs are deactivated during mix down to avoid excess noise
4. Finally, to use the External Effect on track(s):
a. SELECT the track on which you want to use the External Effects and Go to the MIXER section
b. On the GREEN SEND tab, set EFF2 to POST, and adjust its effect level. This will be different for each track Selected.
i. With the POST setting, the effect rides with the fader
c. On the WHITE SEND tab, turn the MASTER Effect level (to 127). This is Global: Controls the EFF2 level for all tracks.
d. Done
I hope this helps.
@@PowercoatMusic Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. I think that my problem was using a single cable out (mono) for an effect that was in stereo. Take care, Andre.
You're welcome. I'm glad you were able to get that sorted out 👍

You're so welcome. Thanks for watching. 👍🏿
Does it make a difference and am I able to connect a compressor to the tascam?
That depends on what you are doing as to whether or not it will make a difference or not. You can connect virtually any external effects processor you like to the unit. Thanks for watching. 👍🏿
@@PowercoatMusic thanks for the quick response
How do I do that with my GR 55....!thank sir!
Thank you sir!!!!!
If you're using send 1 the internal effect but send 2 as the external effect (mono), will you still have 2 cords in the input slots? For instance C-D?

Oh one of great knowledge that I'm lacking! hahahaha......I have a imac sierra computer and the right usb cable connected to it to my 24sd. A friend sent a wav file to me and I can't get it onto my deck to add to his music. I can export my tracks no problem, but importing to my deck from the computer seems to be a problem. I used to be able to just use the headphone jack with an adapter to channel one with input 8 and go from there. But for some reason it doesn't work anymore.......any advice? Don't know if it's the computer headphone jack or if I'm messing up some where......helpppppp!!!!!!!.
I would first suggest checking to ensure that the IMAC headphone jacks are still working using a pair of headphones. Then check to see if at some point the audio signal routed to the headphone jack has been turned off or re-routed somehow. Also check your volume levels for both the computer and the SD. Sometimes these small things sneak past us. I hope this helps.
@@PowercoatMusic Many thanx for such a fast response, yeah I checked all those things and they are working fine, that's why I don't understand why I'm only getting some of the song instead of the whole song, like the bass and drums but not the vocals...... Incorrect...I have a DP24 and you CAN use effects send one to external effects. As a matter of fact, on effects send one, you can use external and internal effects simultaneously...just thought you should know and anyone else who watches this video should know.
I know because I’ve done it multiple times
Thanks for your update. In the video, I was going by Tascam’s own recommendations in the unit’s owner manual regarding this feature set.
