  • Everything you need to know about the state of last-gen consoles running Guardians of the Galaxy. The base machines struggle with low resolutions and sub-30fps frame-rates - though PS4 surprisingly comes out the worst in playability. Meanwhile Xbox One X runs nicely as a 30fps experience, and - shockingly - boasts an even higher resolution than Series S. Tom gives the details in full.

      @@ReelShowtime Yeah, I'm not really sure about this myself. It must be down to either Texel fill-rate or overall bandwidth for the Series S, as it is about on par with the PS4 Pro for both of those, it does have quite a bit more pixel fill rate than the PS4 Pro or Xbox One X for what that is worth. We know on the CPU side it, the Series S, should have no issues running at 60fps, so my gut tells me it is a bandwidth issue. If that is the case, I'm betting this game is not utilizing Sampler Feedback Streaming, if it is then I'm really confused, about how all these new features work.

    I wouldn't even want to see Chapter 14 on base Xbox One or base PS4. On my Series X on performance mode, Chapter 14 was frequently a slide show thanks to the enemy density, the gold backlighing, the gold fog, all the particle effects from combat, and the stuff happening in the background. It was the only chapter I had any issues with on Series X, but when the troubles began the only solution was to close and restart the game otherwise the choppy slowdown would persist even if I backtracked to earlier chapters.

    • @mrshmuga9
      @mrshmuga9 2 года назад +3

      It’s dumb that some of these games aren’t living up to “performance” mode, and it’s more like “less crap” mode. They still seem to be developing games with quality mode as the default and performance as the alternative, when it should be the other way around. It’s not like they can’t make these games look AND run great, they’re just obsessed with 4K, reflections, and ray-tracing.
      Hopefully this won’t be an issue when they don’t have to make cross-gen versions or know the hardware, but it’s still annoying. Make the game run well first, THEN add bells and whistles until framerate starts dropping and then start removing assets until it runs well again. It might be pretty, but we didn’t buy it to put each frame into a photo album.

    • @fafski1199

      Basically, in racing games since the car is moving fast, there is usually a lot of motion blur involved in the images being produced. That alone can give a great performance boost, as the game doesn't then have to draw in all of those assets and textures that are being blurred, with a great amount detail. Plus, they also tend to be far more linear in scope, in that you are often closed and hemmed in, just following a track in one direction (like going one-way down a twisting corridor). Being a small area, it also saves on the amount of assets that are being used and the time used to streaming in those assets. That's why most racing games or other fast paced games with a lot of motion blur involved, usually pump out a decent level of performance.
      On the other hand, slower more open games, like a sandbox game for example, usually have far more assets to handle, since you can travel across a much larger area in any direction and you can often interact with or pick up many of those in-game assets (items). These are also usually slower paced, so there's not only more far assets to draw and stream in, but because there isn't much or any motion blur involved, all of those assets then have to be drawn in, with a much higher degree of detail. This increase of course, then needs far more processing power, which then takes it out on the amount of performance that you end up getting.
      Although the game engine used and fidelity of the graphics play their part, often the type of game, also greatly dictates what the performance level will be like.

      @@MBeeching It's possible in the vast majority of games. Not all support 21:9 ultra wide resolutions though so you might end up with black bars on all sides instead of just the top and bottom. There are other caveats too; most games will need FOV adjustments and HDR doesn't always work at custom resolutions.
      Some games have huge performance gains (Cyberpunk is one of them if I remember), in others the difference is relatively minor/not really worth it. It depends on how the game engine scales with resolution.
      It's a great way to save performance without resorting to resolutions that incorrectly scale to your monitor and cause "upscale blur".
      Death standing on PS5 is a recent high profile example that demonstrated performance is significantly better in an ultra wide scaled resolution and allows for a clean/non blurry image.
      I'm thinking about doing a Reddit post regarding this at some point, I'm not sure many people realise/think of it as a possibility. Many developers could include this as an option on console too in order to achieve their frametime budgets. The aging last gen consoles could really benefit, an extra 10-30% performance with no blur seems like a no-brainer to me. It also helps give games that filmic look...

    The PS4 Pro performance means that with even without proper optimization, the Series S should be able to do a solid 1440p output. They just didn’t bother. With even a modicum of effort put in, PS4 Pro and Series S should be on par with Series S textures being better, with the One X a step above in overall res with lower quality textures, and Series X and PS5 on top with best textures and resolution. On Series S the game was actually running 60 fps before an early patch capped it at 30 fps due to the framerate being a bit choppy.
