Now NW is more Hans Zimmer and more metal. Tarja (Tar-ya) was orig NW. Floor is current NW. Both do their thing. I was at this concert and I am partial to the Finnish 5. But respect Floor immensely.
Who listens to this today can imagine, why we fell in love with Nightwish in this era... it was Tarja in combination with these amazing compositions by Tuomas. It was something that was never before, and that never came back. Floor does a great job - but it was Tarja, who got my heart these days, and Nightwish lost me after she left the band.
I agree, Tarja has that POWER that Floor will never own. I love both of them, I listen to them both as solo artists. I guess ppl don't like Tarja's operatic voice? They are both operatic, but Tarjas is more cristal clear? Idk.
Tarja really owns this song. None of the Tarja era songs really sound that good sung by anyone else but this one especially I feel only Tarja can do justice to.
I'm not comparing Tarja and Floor but this specific song, along with many others, fits way better with Tarja. It was her vocals who hooked me into nightwish back in 2000's
That is just a matter of taste. for me it is the other way. good to have both. i always prefer Floor due to many reasons. No offense to Tarja. Here style is just not my cup of tea. but that is just me. I know all the discussions for a long time. I recognize that she has many fans for good reasons.
The studio version of Sleeping Sun is what is drilled into my heart. It's Tarja's voice, interpreted by her younger and more inexperienced self. it's my Sleeping Sun, forever...That's what I'd say if we go into nuances. This is a masterpiece that deserves to be heard also as interpreted by Anette. It's brilliant.
I’m glad you finally checked out Tarja! ( FYI, the ‘J’ is pronounced like a ‘Y’). Hers is the voice that hooked me on NW in the first place. I ADORE Floor, but to me some songs will forevermore belong to Tarja. This is one of them. Three I can think of (all live) you should check out are Phantom of the Opera from this same End of an Era show; also Bless The Child also from the same show; and Walking in The Air live (it’s from 2000 or 2001).

About Tarja's vocal and classical live performances, yeah, she is classically and operatically trained in german university and after that since today she still training her lyrical vocal, but also some more rock vocal she using in her solo career. She has classical album and performing many classical pieces and opera arias, I recommend "O Mio Babbino Caro" or "Mein Herr Marquis" performed by her or some "Ave Maria", for example Paolo Tosti's, or she have her own classical "Ave Maria" composed by her.
Tarja is classicaly trained. She specialized in Lied singing to be more specific, and graduated at the Sibelius Academy in Finland and Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe, in Germany. That said, when singing metal she was always and trying to find a softspot between the classical technique and a more contemporary sound, but she never had contemporary singing lessons, she was doing the adjustments herself, experimenting and, especially nowadays (this performance is almost 20 years old), I consider her vocals when singing non-classical stuff to be very 'experimental', her classical background shows, but it's not really classical singing and doesn't really sound very contemporary neither. But still she kept developing her classical singing, she still have a coach and she sounds completely different when she's singing actual classical songs and goes full classical on the vocals in concerts like 2013's Beauty and the Beat or 2018's Noche Escandinava. Beauty and the Beat is probably her best live concert ever, not only vocally outstanding but it also showcase her musicality range, as she sang her own solo songs, some Nightwish, some musical and some opera. It is professinally recorded and is most certainly the best concert to start to know her as an artist.

You should check out her version of this song with Steve n Seagulls. They do an upbeat Bluegrass version of the song. You may also want to check out the Beauty and the Beats concert with her and drummer Mike Terrana along with an orchestra. Floor can hit the high notes while Tarja keeps them more deeper notes. In my opinion Tarja is the only one suited to sing this song. Floor doesn't give it the same feeling as Tarja.

Tarja has a beautiful voice, she studied at a university in Germany. I would be interested in an analysis of a newer song of hers (because this video is 19 years old!!) She grew a lot vocally. You should check her singing actual classical songs, like Vilja Lied and/or Pie Jesu. Gorgeous voice. Also Supremacy from Woodstock 2016, a Muse cover. She is amazing. When singing those classical songs, you`ll here her strong, brighter tone and in Supremacy you here her beautiful chest voice. And she is a classically trained lyrical soprano. Her powerful classical voice was the reason Tuomas changed his plans for musical direction and decided to form Nightwish, a symphonic metal band (to mach her voice) instead of experimental acoustic music he had written himself during his time in the Finnish Army. Mein Herr Marquis is interesting, but some people might be picky with that performance. Tarja does a good job but this piece is written for coloraturas (vocal type), wich are very light, agile and high pitched voices. Tarja is quite the opposite to a coloratura, she is a Lyric Spinto Soprano, tho she can go pretty high, she have a dark, heavy and warmer voice, wich makes it very hard for her to sing a coloratura piece properly. Personaly I love it cause its her voice, but opera people are really meticulous about technique, and tend to be very obnoxious about it. Songs like 'Song to the moon' or 'Vilja Lied' are best suited for her vocal type, she really shines singing these two.

I initially went to the comments to tell you the correct pronouncement of Tarja's name (as if it is spelled Tarya), but I see that someone beat me to it. Marco joined Tarja for some of her shows in Europe and South America. I would so love it if he joined her for US shows. I am glad you enjoyed Tarr-ee-aa's rendition of Sleeping Sun. This is not the origjnal version that she sang as she was unhappy with how it sounded. This version was released on the 5th album Once 2004. You are hearing London's (UK) Symphony and Metro Voices London (UK) who recorded work for the album. They spent big money on the album. Tarja studied Lied singing in Germany which is meant for the stage. A mezzo soprano with a 3.5 octave range. You can hear her warm round chest voice.Even more developed during her solo career. Though in songs like Supremacy a Muse cover she will remind you that shebis very much a soprano. She started singjng at age 4 in church. Joined with fellow co founders Tuomas and Empu in 96. Tarja probably was the first girl, Tuomas had a crush on, since she entered his domain to take music lessons from his grandma. Tarja und Tuomas, along with Emppu, were attending the same school and although Tarja was one class down, they all had Music as their elective subject focus and common events. Before founding Nightwish, Tuomas and Emppu already played in different youth bands. Yet, the shy introvert Tuomas intended to play his own compositions and it took all the encouragement of him and Emppu to ask Tarja, whether or not she would join their new project ? 1996 saw the birth of Nightwish, when they started to record a demo tape, forwarding it to different record companies. At their very first concerts, Tuomas, Emppu and Tarja were accompanied by their music teacher on drums and the cantoress from of their local church on keyboards. So obviously, Tuomas needed to be on strings back then. For their first tour through Finnland in 1997, two more young locals, Samppa Hirvonen (bass) and Jukka Nevalainen (drums) joined in, so Tuomas was able to switch to the keyboards. However Samppa Hirvonen had already signed up with the Finnish military, so he wasn't able to continue from a certain point, which, understandably, he later regreted immensely. Consider that he owned some vocal prowess, which he proved on later bands, which Samppa's substitute Sami Vanskä had not. Sami was Nightwish' bassist from 1998 - 2001 until being replaced by Marko Hietala, so Tuomas no longer needed to rely on guest vocalists duetting with Tarja. In my opinion Tarja Turunen was Tuomas inspiration for writing all those love related songs, which became pretty rare since Tarja left. Instead Tuomas was turning on topics like Circus, Science or Nature. If you read his love songs closely, you can find plenty of innuendos towards his (unnamed) crush. He was "romatic only on paper" (quote from Devil & Deep Dark Ocean) and wished he "didn't feel for You anymore" (from Dead Boys Poem). What was happening? Tuomas seemed to never made it out of Tarja's friends-zone, so when she met her husband in 2000, whom she married in 2003, Tuomas lyrics had been influenced, too. In 2004 he wrote that hymn for unrequited love. While Floor is singing "Ghost Love Score" today, you easily forget that those were Tuomas' lines about a love, that never made it into reality and therefore could'nt be rated. How would it have gone? "We used to swim the same moonlight waters...a siren from the sea came to me, sang my dreams my longings...my fall will be for you...time to never hold our love!!" Just search for "Nightwish - Two for Tragedy" on RUclips to find Dany Ela's footage that hits the nail on the head. Interesting that Tuomas first needed to bury his feelings musically with "The Poet and the Pendulum", before he met just another classical traines singer, Johanna Kourkela, in 2009 and got married to her a couple of years later, with whom he recorded those "accoustic campfire music" that he planned with Nightwish in first instance, but dropped due to Tarja. Tarja's husband Marcelo once stated that Tuomas doesn't like him, because he is jealous on him (due to Tarja). Indeed our Latin Lover was extremely jealous, too. Leaving Tarja no more alone with the band, even on tour, cutting their private talkings and moreover, as her "new manager", insisted that a all business releated stuff shall be discussed only with him. He will tell Tarja the relevant topics later. His announcement, that Nightwish' Superstar Tarja Turunen will leave the band after the next album, heading for a solo-career, let the band pull the emergency brake...as the vibe on tour between the band/management and Marcelo had already become unbearable. New hope for continueing their story rose, especially since Floor Jansen entered their domain in 2003, when she and her primeval band were playing as a support band on Nightwish' European tour. Should Tuomas really had been deaf regarding Floor's voice? I don't think so. Consider that before Tuomas was replacing their somewhat indifferent bassist Sami Vanskä by Marko Hietala, he learned about Marko on tour, when he was playing bass for their support band, too!! The only problem with that faithful soul Floor Jansen was, that she was still occupied by "After Forever" back then, which then became a friends band. So they were shrinking back, to ask Floor directly. Their idea was, to make a public employment ad. Unfortunately for Tuomas, only Floor's sister Irene Jansen (to meet the rumours that a Ms.Jansen already applied and had been outperformed by an Anette Olzon) sent her application. But since "After Forever" disbanded in 2009, the benevolence towards their second singer Anette Olzon seemed to decrease. When Anette announced her pregnancy, during her second tour with Nightwish and insisted to postpone all forecoming concerts after the Helsinki show in November, there was no holding back for Tuomas. On Sep. 20, 2012, the wedding day of Floor's sister Irene, Tuomas made his direct-phone-call on Floor's mobile, with only one question left. Why on Earth Floor Jansen ? It needed to be a hefty argument, after Anette was being informe, which consequently let to the "Denver Debacle" or shall we say, "Denver Miracle", on Sept. 28th, 2012. The idea to not overtax Floor, offering her enough preparation time, until the Latin America tour leg will start in late November, was bursting like a bubble: "Please learn the setlist in 48 hours" required another phone call...

But here's something to look up. Tuomas said, he was 13, when he first met Tarja. An age, when boys normally start to look different on girls. Despite of being in the same music class, he was "surprised" that Tarja's strong voice doesn't fit with the atmospheric, accoustic-style of camp-fire music, Nightwish' songs ought to be. But instead of shifting to another singer, Tuomas rather changed his composing style, to better fit with Tarja's voice. Tuomas lyrics were full of innuendos to an unnamed crush only during the Tarja era. It is very likely that he experienced that kind of unrequited love at first, before being able to write such gorgeous songs about it. Not only did it change drastically, after Tarja left Nightwish (2007 Dark Passion Play album was still written/heavily influenced by Tarja's era). Moreover you can also notice a changes in his lyrics, after Tarja met her husband in 2000 and again, after she got married in 2003. Tarja's pick couldn't have been more different to him. Instead of an introvert, shy dreamer, who was "romantic only on paper" Tarja chose an outrovert, show-off, businessman, to whom numbers seemed to be more important, than emotions. Or do you realy believe, that Tuomas wrote his musical suicide "Poet & Pendulum" because of "bad press" or rather because of a broken heart, that needs to be adjusted ? Like burying his feelings to have a new start ? Which also meant, leaving the love song themes behind and going for other topics like circus, science, nature instead ? Not to mention his farewell song to Tarja's husband: "Master Passion Greed". Oh yeah, almost forgot Tuomas' passion for classical trained singers. In 2009 Tuomas met another one, named Johanna Kourkela, whom he married in 2014 or 15? Pure coincidence or just the same pattern? And of course: Tarja noticed those innuendo's to that unknown crush of Tuomas, she needed to sing all over again, which drove her a bit crazy at some times, as she confessed in an interview.

Probably you had never a closer look to Tuomas' lyrics, esp. the more subtle lines, he was adding on a regular base? Also science works with assumptions. Some become facts, some don't. E.g. Sars-Cov2 looks like a (man-made) bio-weapon, or Sahara dust can spread pathogens of unknown origin.
Wishmaster is a totally Tarja song. More than any other song imho. And there are so many songs which haven't been sung by other 2 ladies, can't even imagine how those would turn out with another perspective singing.

Funny you say that she has good opera vocal techniques. But when opera singers are reacting to Tarja...its like someone said New York when he meant New Jersey. If you would just have said America or even Missouri, then all would be fine, but once you get close but just not exactly right...people have stuff to say about it. Like Floor Tarja floats from classical techniques into modern techniques and back. The clear distinction is that Tarja's classic is more operatic (loft/dome and vibrato from the start to the end) where Floor has a musical theater style (head voice/mix straight notes with vibrato at the end)
Tarja does have a solid, classical techinque that is perfect for what she is singing, wich is not opera. You can't start talking about conceptions that only aplies to opera when she is not singing opera, and not even trying to sound like one as, in fact, she have said often that she didn't want to sound too classical when singing metal. What people tend to do is take her singing out of context: First that she is not singing opera, and that she is not an opera singer, she studied Lied singing, not opera, wich is similar but not really the same, and she only very casually sings some classical songs and opera, she doesn't do that for a life, it's not the career she choose, so you cannot expect her to sound the same as someone who sings opera for a life. Tarja is a rock/metal singer with a classical background period. Still, she have done great classical concerts like 2018s Noche Escandinava and she sounds amazing for someone who only does that casually.

i usually prefer Tarja on the older nightwish songs, but this one in particular whenever i hear it i hear Floor. I love both singers, but this song just hits harder for me when Floor sings it. She makes me feel songs.

No offense intended but I really don’t like her vibrato. I find it very off-putting. If I had heard Nightwish with her first, rather than Floor, I would not have continued listening to them. Not that she doesn’t have a good voice, but that kind of vibrato has always (no matter the vocalist) bothered me.
That's not true. She is singing in the operatic style here, and usually did in her time in Nightwish. But she can sing in more pop-rock styles, just as well as she does in her operatic style. Listen to some of her solo stuff and you'll hear that.
You are ignorant and still have to audacity to comment. At least do your research and you would know that it is easier to sing in your chest voice. Head voice often requires more precise control of the vocal mechanism, including the coordination of airflow, muscle engagement, and resonance placement, especially in higher registers. its NOT Opera. Its German Lied (Leed) singing. Music hall but close cousin to opera. designed yes before electricity and artificial amplification. It allows the singer to flow up and down the scales sitting in a pocket where they won't be drowned out by the orchestra. The sound bounces of the walls of the hall. That too was designed. Material and angles chosen to carry it. Now for the difference when she DID tackle opera arias try the Beauty and the Beat concert from her solo career circa 2013 with Mike Terrana former drummer for Rage Against the Machine. She tackled Mein Herr Marquis, mia carano babbino ( apologies for spelling) and Dvorak Fly me to the moon. Now that was her doing opera. Tarja has a masters in music and has tackled many styles and genres of music. 4 albums in 2023 starting with the 3 cd Best of Living the dream (her first compilation. Fan choices,her choices, non rock favourites. Next was Outlanders with Torsten Stenzel an EDM artist they did an electronica album and invited 6 world class guitarists to join them. The visualizers were filmed in Hopes Bay, Antigua,where they both have homes. They tell the story of the island and its people. 3rd up was Rockin' Heels filmed in 2016 at Wackken Metal Church in Germany invite only to >300 souls the night before the open air festival. An acoustic concert where she covered 90's metal hits and some of her own work with a trio of her band's piano player, Cello player, and a lady guest violinist. lastly she having lost her mother near christmas and Finnish christmas carols being of a darker tone worked with her Daughter and her class mates (~age 12) for a year. They picked 20 songs, Tarja narrowed it to 11 plus her original title track Dark Christmas. each song got its own Visualizer. The whole thing released in theatres. The girls were a ghostly choir and Tarja transformed into her light and dark christmas selves to do new takes on old worn out overly played saccharine sweet 50+ year old classics like Rudolph,or modern ones like Mariah Careys All I want for Christmas is you. Rehabilitates those songs. I recommend Circus Life concert filmed in Bucharest,Romania. All in the round with the audience sitting above them. This show had nothing pre recorded. There was a choir and a string quartet and a 2nd drummer. Her and her band. (2 bass, 1 rhythm, lead, cello piano and drum ). You can hear her rock voice.

Now NW is more Hans Zimmer and more metal. Tarja (Tar-ya) was orig NW. Floor is current NW. Both do their thing. I was at this concert and I am partial to the Finnish 5. But respect Floor immensely.

That is just a matter of taste. for me it is the other way. good to have both. i always prefer Floor due to many reasons. No offense to Tarja. Here style is just not my cup of tea. but that is just me. I know all the discussions for a long time. I recognize that she has many fans for good reasons.

The studio version of Sleeping Sun is what is drilled into my heart. It's Tarja's voice, interpreted by her younger and more inexperienced self. it's my Sleeping Sun, forever...That's what I'd say if we go into nuances. This is a masterpiece that deserves to be heard also as interpreted by Anette. It's brilliant.

About Tarja's vocal and classical live performances, yeah, she is classically and operatically trained in german university and after that since today she still training her lyrical vocal, but also some more rock vocal she using in her solo career. She has classical album and performing many classical pieces and opera arias, I recommend "O Mio Babbino Caro" or "Mein Herr Marquis" performed by her or some "Ave Maria", for example Paolo Tosti's, or she have her own classical "Ave Maria" composed by her.
Tarja is classicaly trained. She specialized in Lied singing to be more specific, and graduated at the Sibelius Academy in Finland and Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe, in Germany. That said, when singing metal she was always and trying to find a softspot between the classical technique and a more contemporary sound, but she never had contemporary singing lessons, she was doing the adjustments herself, experimenting and, especially nowadays (this performance is almost 20 years old), I consider her vocals when singing non-classical stuff to be very 'experimental', her classical background shows, but it's not really classical singing and doesn't really sound very contemporary neither. But still she kept developing her classical singing, she still have a coach and she sounds completely different when she's singing actual classical songs and goes full classical on the vocals in concerts like 2013's Beauty and the Beat or 2018's Noche Escandinava. Beauty and the Beat is probably her best live concert ever, not only vocally outstanding but it also showcase her musicality range, as she sang her own solo songs, some Nightwish, some musical and some opera. It is professinally recorded and is most certainly the best concert to start to know her as an artist.

If I had to make a list of the ten most beautiful things I've heard on youtube, this would easily be one of them.
Floor can hit the high notes while Tarja keeps them more deeper notes. In my opinion Tarja is the only one suited to sing this song. Floor doesn't give it the same feeling as Tarja.
That's right - Floor's version is just too contemporary sounding and it loses the haunting/Gothic atmosphere because of it.

You should check her singing actual classical songs, like Vilja Lied and/or Pie Jesu. Gorgeous voice. Also Supremacy from Woodstock 2016, a Muse cover. She is amazing. When singing those classical songs, you`ll here her strong, brighter tone and in Supremacy you here her beautiful chest voice. And she is a classically trained lyrical soprano. Her powerful classical voice was the reason Tuomas changed his plans for musical direction and decided to form Nightwish, a symphonic metal band (to mach her voice) instead of experimental acoustic music he had written himself during his time in the Finnish Army.

That is Tarja's attempt at actuAl opera arias.
Mein Herr Marquis is interesting, but some people might be picky with that performance. Tarja does a good job but this piece is written for coloraturas (vocal type), wich are very light, agile and high pitched voices. Tarja is quite the opposite to a coloratura, she is a Lyric Spinto Soprano, tho she can go pretty high, she have a dark, heavy and warmer voice, wich makes it very hard for her to sing a coloratura piece properly. Personaly I love it cause its her voice, but opera people are really meticulous about technique, and tend to be very obnoxious about it. Songs like 'Song to the moon' or 'Vilja Lied' are best suited for her vocal type, she really shines singing these two.

Tarja probably was the first girl, Tuomas had a crush on, since she entered his domain to take music lessons from his grandma. Tarja und Tuomas, along with Emppu, were attending the same school and although Tarja was one class down, they all had Music as their elective subject focus and common events. Before founding Nightwish, Tuomas and Emppu already played in different youth bands. Yet, the shy introvert Tuomas intended to play his own compositions and it took all the encouragement of him and Emppu to ask Tarja, whether or not she would join their new project ? 1996 saw the birth of Nightwish, when they started to record a demo tape, forwarding it to different record companies. At their very first concerts, Tuomas, Emppu and Tarja were accompanied by their music teacher on drums and the cantoress from of their local church on keyboards. So obviously, Tuomas needed to be on strings back then. For their first tour through Finnland in 1997, two more young locals, Samppa Hirvonen (bass) and Jukka Nevalainen (drums) joined in, so Tuomas was able to switch to the keyboards. However Samppa Hirvonen had already signed up with the Finnish military, so he wasn't able to continue from a certain point, which, understandably, he later regreted immensely. Consider that he owned some vocal prowess, which he proved on later bands, which Samppa's substitute Sami Vanskä had not. Sami was Nightwish' bassist from 1998 - 2001 until being replaced by Marko Hietala, so Tuomas no longer needed to rely on guest vocalists duetting with Tarja.
In my opinion Tarja Turunen was Tuomas inspiration for writing all those love related songs, which became pretty rare since Tarja left. Instead Tuomas was turning on topics like Circus, Science or Nature. If you read his love songs closely, you can find plenty of innuendos towards his (unnamed) crush. He was "romatic only on paper" (quote from Devil & Deep Dark Ocean) and wished he "didn't feel for You anymore" (from Dead Boys Poem).
What was happening? Tuomas seemed to never made it out of Tarja's friends-zone, so when she met her husband in 2000, whom she married in 2003, Tuomas lyrics had been influenced, too. In 2004 he wrote that hymn for unrequited love. While Floor is singing "Ghost Love Score" today, you easily forget that those were Tuomas' lines about a love, that never made it into reality and therefore could'nt be rated. How would it have gone? "We used to swim the same moonlight waters...a siren from the sea came to me, sang my dreams my longings...my fall will be for you...time to never hold our love!!" Just search for "Nightwish - Two for Tragedy" on RUclips to find Dany Ela's footage that hits the nail on the head. Interesting that Tuomas first needed to bury his feelings musically with "The Poet and the Pendulum", before he met just another classical traines singer, Johanna Kourkela, in 2009 and got married to her a couple of years later, with whom he recorded those "accoustic campfire music" that he planned with Nightwish in first instance, but dropped due to Tarja.
Tarja's husband Marcelo once stated that Tuomas doesn't like him, because he is jealous on him (due to Tarja). Indeed our Latin Lover was extremely jealous, too. Leaving Tarja no more alone with the band, even on tour, cutting their private talkings and moreover, as her "new manager", insisted that a all business releated stuff shall be discussed only with him. He will tell Tarja the relevant topics later. His announcement, that Nightwish' Superstar Tarja Turunen will leave the band after the next album, heading for a solo-career, let the band pull the emergency brake...as the vibe on tour between the band/management and Marcelo had already become unbearable.
New hope for continueing their story rose, especially since Floor Jansen entered their domain in 2003, when she and her primeval band were playing as a support band on Nightwish' European tour. Should Tuomas really had been deaf regarding Floor's voice? I don't think so. Consider that before Tuomas was replacing their somewhat indifferent bassist Sami Vanskä by Marko Hietala, he learned about Marko on tour, when he was playing bass for their support band, too!! The only problem with that faithful soul Floor Jansen was, that she was still occupied by "After Forever" back then, which then became a friends band. So they were shrinking back, to ask Floor directly. Their idea was, to make a public employment ad. Unfortunately for Tuomas, only Floor's sister Irene Jansen (to meet the rumours that a Ms.Jansen already applied and had been outperformed by an Anette Olzon) sent her application. But since "After Forever" disbanded in 2009, the benevolence towards their second singer Anette Olzon seemed to decrease. When Anette announced her pregnancy, during her second tour with Nightwish and insisted to postpone all forecoming concerts after the Helsinki show in November, there was no holding back for Tuomas. On Sep. 20, 2012, the wedding day of Floor's sister Irene, Tuomas made his direct-phone-call on Floor's mobile, with only one question left. Why on Earth Floor Jansen ? It needed to be a hefty argument, after Anette was being informe, which consequently let to the "Denver Debacle" or shall we say, "Denver Miracle", on Sept. 28th, 2012. The idea to not overtax Floor, offering her enough preparation time, until the Latin America tour leg will start in late November, was bursting like a bubble: "Please learn the setlist in 48 hours" required another phone call...

But here's something to look up. Tuomas said, he was 13, when he first met Tarja. An age, when boys normally start to look different on girls. Despite of being in the same music class, he was "surprised" that Tarja's strong voice doesn't fit with the atmospheric, accoustic-style of camp-fire music, Nightwish' songs ought to be. But instead of shifting to another singer, Tuomas rather changed his composing style, to better fit with Tarja's voice. Tuomas lyrics were full of innuendos to an unnamed crush only during the Tarja era. It is very likely that he experienced that kind of unrequited love at first, before being able to write such gorgeous songs about it. Not only did it change drastically, after Tarja left Nightwish (2007 Dark Passion Play album was still written/heavily influenced by Tarja's era). Moreover you can also notice a changes in his lyrics, after Tarja met her husband in 2000 and again, after she got married in 2003. Tarja's pick couldn't have been more different to him. Instead of an introvert, shy dreamer, who was "romantic only on paper" Tarja chose an outrovert, show-off, businessman, to whom numbers seemed to be more important, than emotions. Or do you realy believe, that Tuomas wrote his musical suicide "Poet & Pendulum" because of "bad press" or rather because of a broken heart, that needs to be adjusted ? Like burying his feelings to have a new start ? Which also meant, leaving the love song themes behind and going for other topics like circus, science, nature instead ? Not to mention his farewell song to Tarja's husband: "Master Passion Greed". Oh yeah, almost forgot Tuomas' passion for classical trained singers. In 2009 Tuomas met another one, named Johanna Kourkela, whom he married in 2014 or 15? Pure coincidence or just the same pattern? And of course: Tarja noticed those innuendo's to that unknown crush of Tuomas, she needed to sing all over again, which drove her a bit crazy at some times, as she confessed in an interview.

Funny you say that she has good opera vocal techniques. But when opera singers are reacting to Tarja...its like someone said New York when he meant New Jersey. If you would just have said America or even Missouri, then all would be fine, but once you get close but just not exactly right...people have stuff to say about it. Like Floor Tarja floats from classical techniques into modern techniques and back. The clear distinction is that Tarja's classic is more operatic (loft/dome and vibrato from the start to the end) where Floor has a musical theater style (head voice/mix straight notes with vibrato at the end)
Tarja does have a solid, classical techinque that is perfect for what she is singing, wich is not opera. You can't start talking about conceptions that only aplies to opera when she is not singing opera, and not even trying to sound like one as, in fact, she have said often that she didn't want to sound too classical when singing metal. What people tend to do is take her singing out of context: First that she is not singing opera, and that she is not an opera singer, she studied Lied singing, not opera, wich is similar but not really the same, and she only very casually sings some classical songs and opera, she doesn't do that for a life, it's not the career she choose, so you cannot expect her to sound the same as someone who sings opera for a life. Tarja is a rock/metal singer with a classical background period. Still, she have done great classical concerts like 2018s Noche Escandinava and she sounds amazing for someone who only does that casually.
@@Marcusrafaelfet Yes indeed. There are elements of opera in her voice, but no intention to go full opera and therefor it is not the same and you cannot compare it. She could get closer to opera then most singers, but why would she? She is a Metal singer!

Grew up with Nightwish (I'm Finnish) Tarja singing, with that rally accent and all. But Floor got it higher pitch, like you can listen in metro without having random seizure where you are fighting with dragons. With a toothbrush. Jeez that sounds wrong.

i usually prefer Tarja on the older nightwish songs, but this one in particular whenever i hear it i hear Floor. I love both singers, but this song just hits harder for me when Floor sings it. She makes me feel songs.

Tarja's voice is the Nightwish voice I grew up with. I like Floor too, in her own way, but Tarja is the voice of my youth.

No offense intended but I really don’t like her vibrato. I find it very off-putting. If I had heard Nightwish with her first, rather than Floor, I would not have continued listening to them. Not that she doesn’t have a good voice, but that kind of vibrato has always (no matter the vocalist) bothered me.

That's not true. She is singing in the operatic style here, and usually did in her time in Nightwish. But she can sing in more pop-rock styles, just as well as she does in her operatic style. Listen to some of her solo stuff and you'll hear that.
You are ignorant and still have to audacity to comment. At least do your research and you would know that it is easier to sing in your chest voice. Head voice often requires more precise control of the vocal mechanism, including the coordination of airflow, muscle engagement, and resonance placement, especially in higher registers. And transitioning smoothly between chest and head voice without noticeable breaks or shifts can be particularly challenging for singers, and Tarja does it effortlessly. You must be new to Nightwish and I bet all my money that you listened to Ghost Love Score first and fell in love with Floor to the point that you are disrespecting Tarja. If it wasn't for Tarja Nightwish would be an acoustic band doing covers and you would've never heard of Floor. Such an ignorant.

its NOT Opera. Its German Lied (Leed) singing. Music hall but close cousin to opera. designed yes before electricity and artificial amplification. It allows the singer to flow up and down the scales sitting in a pocket where they won't be drowned out by the orchestra. The sound bounces of the walls of the hall. That too was designed. Material and angles chosen to carry it.
Now for the difference when she DID tackle opera arias try the Beauty and the Beat concert from her solo career circa 2013 with Mike Terrana former drummer for Rage Against the Machine.
She tackled Mein Herr Marquis, mia carano babbino ( apologies for spelling) and Dvorak Fly me to the moon.
Now that was her doing opera.
Tarja has a masters in music and has tackled many styles and genres of music.
4 albums in 2023 starting with the 3 cd Best of Living the dream (her first compilation. Fan choices,her choices, non rock favourites.
Next was Outlanders with Torsten Stenzel an EDM artist they did an electronica album and invited 6 world class guitarists to join them. The visualizers were filmed in Hopes Bay, Antigua,where they both have homes. They tell the story of the island and its people. 3rd up was Rockin' Heels filmed in 2016 at Wackken Metal Church in Germany invite only to >300 souls the night before the open air festival. An acoustic concert where she covered 90's metal hits and some of her own work with a trio of her band's piano player, Cello player, and a lady guest violinist.
lastly she having lost her mother near christmas and Finnish christmas carols being of a darker tone worked with her Daughter and her class mates (~age 12) for a year. They picked 20 songs, Tarja narrowed it to 11 plus her original title track Dark Christmas. each song got its own Visualizer. The whole thing released in theatres.
The girls were a ghostly choir and Tarja transformed into her light and dark christmas selves to do new takes on old worn out overly played saccharine sweet 50+ year old classics like Rudolph,or modern ones like Mariah Careys All I want for Christmas is you. Rehabilitates those songs.
I recommend Circus Life concert filmed in Bucharest,Romania. All in the round with the audience sitting above them. This show had nothing pre recorded. There was a choir and a string quartet and a 2nd drummer. Her and her band. (2 bass, 1 rhythm, lead, cello piano and drum ).
You can hear her rock voice.
