Mikes, Barry’s then Jamie’s. Jamie’s looked like something you make when you don’t have any food left before grocery day. Mike’s looked like a Sunday dinner and Barry’s looked like down home winter comfort food to be eaten any day of the week. Nice to see a ramen dish that actually has ramen noodles in it.
Sitting up till 2 am to watch you from here in Queensland, Australia. Love you guys, the way you approach food and just the fun you all seem to have. So glad I found this channel. Keep up the good work! Ex chef here!
Barry's is the one I'd be most curious to try and Mike's is the one that appeals to me to most in terms of wanting to eat the whole thing. Too bad Mike couldn't claim something from the allotment as "free" to garnish/add a bit of green like a tiny dressed salad.
Honestly for me it was a toss-up between Mike and Jamie's dish (noodle dumplings wasn't really working for me), would've been happy to eat either one. But props to Jamie for pulling that off despite the oven situation 😁
around four and a half years ago, Ben faced James in a chef vs chef 20 quid fresh market battle. It would be amazing if you vcould send all 3 normals to do the same in an "ultimate market battle"
*at point when jamie is freaking out about his uncooked panadas* well, as we know from barry in a past battle, time limit doesnt matter if it involves a major part of your dish, so jamie should just keep going after the time limit is done and stop worrying!
These are all great! I loved that Jamie used the same ingredients in so many ways to create so many different elements. And the breadpanadas seem like a really fun little dish to make with kids. Mike's pie looked so good; mustard and lemon, leeks and mushrooms... Winning combination. And Barry had a hard one! So creative. I'd probably just put the noodles in the broth instead of making dumplings, and leave the ham out. Really nice simple soup with perfect eggs. Super realistic, on budget and on time. Well done! ABSOLUTELY agree! Maybe it's just the states but produce is expensive so a veggie-heavy meal that's constrained to a budget is very impressive. Well done!
MIKE MIKE MIKE!!! The clear winner! lol He got me with puff pastry, leeks and mushrooms as a pie. Baz would be second and Jamie third. Succotash sucks lol
I am a little surprised Jamie decided to only use "half" of each bread slice in a budget challenge and won doing it. I guess in a real life scenario you could use the rest of the bread for something else but within the challenge the rest of all those slices were wasted.
well yes it was mentioned that stale bread can be turned into breadcrumbs, which could then even be fried off with herbs and kept sealed for a lovely seasoned crumb over lots of things without having to waste them. I don't really think the bread here was wasted, just not used fully in this recipe. You don't really need that much bread for the recipe either IMO, plus it looks nicer like this than a full slab of squished bread and they are trying to win and looks are a part of it.
I am glad they made them pay for the whole jar of mustard. You can't just get a spoon of mustard or a small amount of certain food so having them pay for all of it is good.
You can get free packets from certain places, but quality/variety is hit or miss. You also may have to sacrifice a little diginity if you haven't ordered anything, or pretend a friend forgot to get them when they ordered earlier, or at least get lots of extras when you have the money to order for the pantry. But when you're broke you do what you gotta do.
Three very delicious looking plates. I'll gladly prepare either of them. My pick for first is Mike, because his dish is the most filling and also Jamie left a lot of his bread unused. Since he didn't give a use of the rest of the loaf of bread to me that count as waste. The bread-panada is a great idea. But I would use the whole slice by flattening it as Jamie did, and then cutting the bread diagonally and I get more from the same amount of money.
I love that they have to pay for the whole container. I hate when other youtube channels have budget meals, but only include the 38 cents worth of flour or whatever they use. That's not how shopping works!
True. Would be interesting for them to be able to use stuff they bought in a past battle. Jamie could use his crusts, Mike could use the mustard. If he had made the béchamel he could use the flour milk and butter.
Depends on how you do your budget and if your goal is cooking frugally long term, or cooking with what you can buy right this moment Because you got to eat tomorrow and the day after too. Dishes that work well on stuff you can buy right this moment for as little as possible aren't necessarily cheaper if you do that every day. Buying basic pantry items in large quantities to save money really is how shopping works
I love how throughout this video, in the kitchen, whenever Jamie isn't particularly chatty but you can see him, he's chewing on something. Reminds me a lot of when I went to culinary school, one of my classmates would always find something to nibble on while cooking.
I love Jamie and I'm happy for him but I would have chosen Mike, I think the *amount* of high quality, great tasting food with such a little budget is just astounding.
I tried the Beyond Meat burgers today, as a meat-eater, I found them quite nice. It gave me an idea for a battle. How about we have the three guys try to create a meat like dish with those plant-based substitutes.
Since I just did my own yogurt for the very first time today, I realized that you haven't done anything fermented, right? I would love for you to do a series of fermenting. It is so great for nutrition, a great way to preserve food and good to have in an emergency pantry.
@@jeannetruman4380 True, sauerkraut is done everywhere. There's so much more you can ferment, like cauliflower, broccoli and carrots, for example. Sooo good!
I love these videos. I don't know if I'd ever copy one of these recipes directly, but there's parts of each where they've come up with really good ideas that I'll probably incorporate into my own cooking at some point.
Mike's "hack" of deglazing the pan with nothing but water is a great trick for making really tasty, yet unbelievably simple sauces. Even well before I became an adult and started really cooking for myself and learning culinary terms and techniques, it was a trick I picked up from my mother.
@@janmay3901 Fr been noticing the sudden Barry hate wave since the start of 2021, it's like everyone suddenly became a judge thinks this is masterchef. Mikes, Barry’s then Jamie’s. Jamie’s looked like something you make when you don’t have any food left before grocery day. Mike’s looked like a Sunday dinner and Barry’s looked like down home winter comfort food to be eaten any day of the week. Nice to see a ramen dish that actually has ramen noodles in it.
that crunch on the bread penadas though...makin me hungry over here in jersey Jamie
I really enjoy battles when the three guys are in the kitchen together. Keep up the good work!
They all looked delicious! It would be nearly impossible to choose between those.
I find it funny how for Jamie spanish cooking just means putting chorizo in everything.
around four and a half years ago, Ben faced James in a chef vs chef 20 quid fresh market battle. It would be amazing if you vcould send all 3 normals to do the same in an "ultimate market battle"
Gotta admit, that pie and thigh would my personal favourite, but they all look great!
*at point when jamie is freaking out about his uncooked panadas* well, as we know from barry in a past battle, time limit doesnt matter if it involves a major part of your dish, so jamie should just keep going after the time limit is done and stop worrying!
Been recovering from a severe injury to my knee, these videos cheer me up and help pass time while I recover. Thank you!
Yep! Mikes just asking what we were all thinking, as soon as Jamie explained his dish!🤷🏻♀️🤣😳
Well done! Always recommend your channel to people who say they can't cook, or they hate to. You make everything easy to follow and fun to achieve. Keep it up guys

My win was Mike's. Loved the look of that easy pie.
“Is your dish gonna cause an international incident?” Thanks, I’m from Argentina and those look cute and I’m 100% sure they were delicious but those were so far away from empanadas, still love the name and the idea and mike asking that question made it fun and less judgmental to watch 😂
You guys are amazing!!!! You have seriously been so helpful to me in the kitchen!! Thank you for being you!! ❤️
I love having my breakfast and watching Sunday Sorted ✨ Hugs to you guys all the way from Brazil
I'd love to see a "5 minute breakfast" video. Maybe have the normals make multiple dishes, seeing as 3x5 minutes is probably not long enough to make a video!
Anymore, Jamie is on a speed run on how fast he can offend people by combining dishes/flavors.
Sticks to what he knows best 🙈
@@SortedFood if Jamie suddenly disappears, we all know why.
i mean, it's on brand with him. isn't it 😂
Not sure what was offensive about this; Jamie didn't claim to be doing anything even remotely authentic.
@@adde9506 it isn’t. It’s just in the past he has done things I didn’t think was bad either, just fusion, and people got upset. Some people need to calm down.
Man… Jamie has improved so much over the last few years. Not that the other lads haven’t, but his improvement has been on display so much more. I love to see it!
I agree
ABSOLUTELY agree! Maybe it's just the states but produce is expensive so a veggie-heavy meal that's constrained to a budget is very impressive. Well done!
Loves these episodes. Given there are small hacks, tips and ideas that normals can use
As our pockets get stretched this year, it's great to see more of these budget challenges - certainly some inspiration as I start to cut back!
I think Ben was giving him a hint to sprinkle toasted bread crumbs over his broccoli
Hells yes! I look forward to these every Sunday!
As creative and delicious-sounding Jamie's was, I think for a budget battle portion size matters a lot. I'd have chosen Mike.
Please tell me i’m not the only one who has to watch Sorted food while I eat or cooking! Love every upload!
I just can't get past the fact that Jamie made a Chorizo and Feta Uncrustable!!! The potential is limitless...
Mike's dish made something easy look really special and doable for the middle of the week. and affordable. Mike's dish for sure.
The Bread-panadas and feta broccoli sounded gorgeous! Not big on the tomato sweetcorn stuff because even the smell of sweetcorn makes me feel ill lol.
Ah! I know how you feel! I can't abide the smell (or taste) of corn; tinned, fresh, whatever. I actually closed my eyes when I saw the corn.
Without the time pressure, all three look appetizing, and wonderfully creative. Well done to all the Norms.
Yeah! Battles are back! And all the recipes are ones I want to try!!!

While Jamie having a complete meltdown over an oven was great content, I felt so sorry for him at the same time
I feel sorry when it happens on Bake Off, but not here.
But he still won anyways! Hooray!
Happy Sunday to SortedFood HQ and the Community!
Depends on how you do your budget and if your goal is cooking frugally long term, or cooking with what you can buy right this moment
Because you got to eat tomorrow and the day after too.
Jamie is basically making Uncrustables and I'm here for it!
toasted uncrustables
I think that's likely just an American thing, too!
pretty much
I’ve missed the 3 way battle banter…so good to watch!
I love Jamie and I'm happy for him but I would have chosen Mike, I think the *amount* of high quality, great tasting food with such a little budget is just astounding.
good to see all the lads in the kitchen at the same time. i love the chaos!!
I tried the Beyond Meat burgers today, as a meat-eater, I found them quite nice. It gave me an idea for a battle. How about we have the three guys try to create a meat like dish with those plant-based substitutes.
As a student I'd LOVE the full recipes for each of these, because they all look stunning
Since I just did my own yogurt for the very first time today, I realized that you haven't done anything fermented, right? I would love for you to do a series of fermenting. It is so great for nutrition, a great way to preserve food and good to have in an emergency pantry.
Fermented vegs, dairy, kombucha, there's so much you can do. 😊
Great idea. We’ll get on to that.
@@SortedFood please don't have/ concentrate on sauerkraut. It can be overdone. But it would be interesting.
The one I would eat is always the one Ben puts last - and almost always Barry's... kind of getting to be a drag.
Any morning with Sorted Food is a good morning. 11:00am over here in America!
Please make Ben a “Safety Inspector” tshirt…
Mike's "hack" of deglazing the pan with nothing but water is a great trick for making really tasty, yet unbelievably simple sauces. Even well before I became an adult and started really cooking for myself and learning culinary terms and techniques, it was a trick I picked up from my mother.
Jamie. Instead of using the oven, why not airfry them.airfryers are basically a mini oven.
cos air friers are shite
The glorious zoom in to Baz in the Meal Packs ad is **chefs kiss**
Huh, Barry does a better "gourmet ramen" than Ebbers despite not only being a "normal" but also in a budget cooking battle episode. xD
And still loses every time - getting very predictable.
@@therealwenchkin agreed! Barry gives a brilliant dish but he's always held to a different standard
And is slammed in the live PIO by those who comment, there's no need for the negativity sent his way.
@@janmay3901 Fr been noticing the sudden Barry hate wave since the start of 2021, it's like everyone suddenly became a judge thinks this is masterchef. Barry don't deserve these dumb comments when he literally gets judged way harsher than the other 2 since Ben (and James) know his abilities are way higher
Perfect! I’m just about to meal plan for the week before going food shopping so appreciate some inspiration and ideas!
A very special congratulations to Barry for making instant ramen noodles gourmet ;p But honestly you all did an amazing job. Can totally see why Ebbers struggled to make a decision at first.
HeLpLiNe ❤👆👆
They all look amazing, but Mike's dish gets our vote!
I wonder what the REAL budgets for these dishes were? No way, after all, that they each took a fiver to the supermarket and got all they needed, even with England's insanely low food prices.
edit: Didn't expect that ending, what with the oopsie during cooking.
It's most likely 5 per portion, not 5 for the whole thing, so 20 total.. At least that's what I think
Ive missed these battles where they’re all together. It’s just the chaos 👌
That basic equipment badge looks shaky, Jamie!
They all look great, Jamie's looks really appetizing, but Mike's is the one I'm more inclined to actually make at home
My winner is Barry for actually delivering what the community wanted: A PROPERLY GOURMET VERSION OF INSTANT RAMEN
🤣🤣🤣 That is true, excluding the ham product but he was on a budget
Most comments I've read prefer Mike's as a meal they would make and actually want to eat, including myself with Jamie's broccoli on the side.
Lol
I agree. I thought to myself, if Barry comes in 3rd again with that beautiful budget ramen, something is wrong.
The one that looks best to me -- the one I want to make soon for myself -- is that puff pastry pie and crispy chicken. I love the combination of chicken and mustard. Mike would get my vote.
Please collaborate with Jack Monroe for some budget food content. She's the absolute best at it and a wonderful person to boot!
We’d love to. We’ll try and make it happen 🙌
+1, definitely!
We have the exact same oven as you, it actually says in the instruction manual not to leave the door open while using any of its functions including the grill
1. Mike 2. Barry 3. Jamie (he's just lucky his Empanadas cooked in less time than he had planned for)
Probably the first time I would be unable to choose a definitive favourite, as all of them sounds great. Well done, boys!
Would love a breakdown of everyone's ingredient costs, surely Mike didn't get all that chicken and other ingredients for £5
In the US the puff pastry alone would cost that.
Isn't it 5 per portion, not 5 for the whole thing?
@@stone5against1 no be said later in the video if if was £1.25 per portion.... So overall budget I gathered is £5
@@edwardcampbell8097 wow really? That's really cheap for all that food
@@stone5against1 yeah that's why I'm so confused how he got all those chicken thighs for less than £5
Lovely tips and tricks in the preparation, too! All three did look wonderful.
