Nice video! Thanks for sharing! I'm rebuilding the front of my 1995 i6 engine. This is a big help! People like you and RUclips are such a big help! Thank you!
Glad it helped!
Got this job to do the next few days. Great job on showing how to do it. One of the best videos I have watched on doing engine work. Fantastic camera work! Thanks for posting this. ;)
Thank you, I love your videos. Great filming and no talking. Just bought a '91 f150 with a 4.9, 5 speed (Mazda unfortuanately) and 4X4 extended. Got it cheap because timing gear broken (fiber kind). Keep them coming!
Just what I was looking for, I just purchased an 83 F100 w/300 cid L6, clears up my concerns on oil slinger. Great video..Bill
hey I have an 83 f100 with a 300 six, they're a beast
My experience is gaskets dry out plus? pcv or the pvc valve one of them I get mixed up or egr valve system is not hooked up or by passed or stopped up ok that said some of these old engines develop small amount of blow by this doesn't mean nothing bad by no means but blow by plus no crank case vacuum puts positive pressure inside of engine that pushes oil from old dryed out gaskets just my experience on all engines!!! Good luck!!
I’ve got an 83 300 i6 also. Just did the push rod cover and valve cover gaskets. Stopped those leaks. Now looks like I’ll need to deal with the timing cover seal. Started leaking bad after I switched to my winter oil of 5w-30. But first I’m going to check the torque on the oil pan bolts. My valve cover bolts were all just finger tight. Probably part of the issue with leaks.
Great job on the video. Preparing to do the same on my 95 F150 soon. Your video has helped tremendously. Well Done!!
A mistake folks can easily make is not like this video illustrates is to take your time & not to be in a rush. I have found a secret to these types of installs because more over the 5.7 small block Chevy have that lip on the timing cover that can play hell with things on reassembly and there are more Ford engines that have this type of timing cover as well. The first thing to do is be in no rush meaning the install should be a 2 day event. I use a thin layer of the JB weld black oil resist sealer OR the gray Permatex gear box sealer to first cement the gaskets in place so shit won't move around or fall off during the reassembly process I sometimes even use clamps and clothes pins too. If the gaskets cannot fall off or move around you can't make any boo boos and it even happens to pros like me. It happened when I did my own sons truck. I was being rushed by my kid and won't let that happen again either. A good process is to first find some heavy cardboard or thin plywood something U can put a brick or weight on top of it to help press the gasket and keep the gasket flat. I am even at odds with Felpro at times I have made them send me PRO PACKAGE gaskets. I know they now have a tendency to put PRO PACKAGE on all their boxes now days but that is not what a PRO PACK gasket set is. It means engine shops guys like me we want every gasket visible and FLAT AND STRAIGHT usually on a shrink packaged piece of cardboard. Melling even uses thin plywood in some of their Pro Pack install kits as does Morrison and a few of the upper high end cam shaft makers usually ship or deliver their gaskets on thick cardboard blister pack type of set ups. I look for that advantage over having a crumbled up piece of shit in a box someone calls a gaskets. So don't be fooled when FELPRO puts PRO PACKAGED on every box now days. A PRO PACK gasket set is a total diff animal folks. What happens in Professional shops especially a HIGH PRODUCTION shop where people take breaks and lunch is the diff of pro pack is we don't dump shit out of a box all over a work bench with say 50 other projects on it and tools all over. A pro pack you cut out the pieces you need to work with and the rest of the shit stays put.
I'm about to do the exact same thing with my 96... thanks for creating these videos!
Yo tengo que hacer este trabajo lo hice hace 4 meses pero no cabie el empaqué y me quedo tirando poquito pero ahora ya esta aumentando gracias por tu ayuda
What the torque spec on the harmonic balancer
Hola tengo una f100 1995 y se barrio el engranaje de la leva , quiero saber si pudo torcer valvulas o alla echo otro daño gracias ..
Best video for this on RUclips !
I have a 1993 ford f150 with a 4.9 6 cylinder and it's making a granding noise from the timing gears
Awesome job, but 5w20 ? Little too light for that engine , may cause wear in the long run .
Iv run the ford synthetic blend religiously which is too light but so far so good after a few years. i think the fact i always use lucas helps me get away with it he might be ok a long time . The thing that kills these engines are revs i keep it up in the powerband and spin em like a e30 iv had a few blow a window through the block the first connecting rod come apart at the cap
Need help! I’ve got a 1995 Ford 4.9l & putting in new rockers & pushrods. The book calls for 17 to 23 foots pounds. My question is can I just torque it in at 23 ft pounds as is regardless of camshaft lobe position?
I believe the 93 is non adjustable just crank em down tight
Just what I was looking for I was wondering what the front timing cover was I changed my water pump today but I left it off for now. Wanted to see if I should change some other stuff
Talk about an all day job. Wish i found this video when i did mine. Now i have to go back in because of a slow leak.
Hey man, thank you so much. I just wanted to if you have the part number for the Chinesium timing cover. Mine is fine but probably like yourself I just want to install all new parts because mine has been on my truck for 38 years. I can live with paying for a new cover. Thanks bro
It's been years, I have no idea. I just searched Ebay - something like "4.9 i6" etc. Maybe even on Amazon now, and/or bone yards, local shops and so forth
What size bolt fit into the cam nose?
I've heard so many good things about this engine. Why did Ford use timing gears as opposed to a chain or belt? Plus the 300 is a tractor engine isn't it?
Timing gears tend to last longer & the 300 I believe is used in tractors now, at one time they were put into many different types of ford trucks
Gears are more reliable than anything else. No it is not a tractor engine! The 240/300 6 introduced in 1965 as the new truck inline 6 replacing the previous inline 6 design.produced from 1965 through 1996,the most durable engine in the Ford family! Also use in baggage handling vehicles, generators, air compressors, water pumps . Etc. Was also used in medium duty trucks. Mine has over 400,000 miles ,on original timing gears! Still runs great!
@@knuckle_draggerwasn't used in tractors ,this engine was discontinued in 1996.
@ cool! I mean didn’t Ford use the engine in agricultural capacities like tractors and combines, etc? The low end torque would be perfect in that setting.
It’s the only Ford truck I would drive if it had the 300
I got mine 3 weeks ago I love it, like my first car! I fix watches, its like the mini version of this!
you prolly dont care but if you're bored like me during the covid times you can watch all of the new movies on instaflixxer. I've been streaming with my brother these days :)
@Nicholas Wesson Definitely, been using instaflixxer for months myself =)
Very good 👍
Good morning,
When you finished installing the new balancer, how much clearance was there between the back of the balancer and the timing cover? I just installed the same balancer on my truck and I only have 0.015 inch of clearance.
It is supposed to be close - there might be specs somewhere online
im rebuilding mine some time in the near future unknown miles but she's had a hard life engines all sludged up from an owner of the past and something's got a loose rattle inside the engine had it since i bought it and i know it needs new lifters and a valve job needs done but i been driving it as a daily for almost a year now.
Do you need to drain your motor oil to do this job? The timing cover?
Doesn't hurt
What were the steps you took to do oil pan gasket? I have a 89 f150 4.9l 2x4 xkt lariat.
@Chairman of the Board what about just drooping the pan as i can see id have about 2-3 inches of clearance and fish the new gasket through after i clean the mating surfaces. i can use my mechanic camera to make sure that the gasket is fitted and line up properly?
Those questionable "tabs" were positioning tabs so the gasket didn't slide around during timing cover installation....
lol I lol'd so hard
I guess in error i mean the factory should have ran it through some dort of nips to clip the excess. Gor people like me who get stumped if it doesnt look right. Thanks though i figured it was from a mold but figured they would be pre snipped!
There is small holes in the oil pan that the little taps pull trough and holds the gasket in place
This is like one them ASE test questions with mechanic A says this mechanic B says that and mechanic C says a mix of the two....so who is correct???
As a retired Ford Tech ... that was hard to watch.
Fantastic series!
all good but it dont show how you took the camshaft gear off
Did I miss the oil slinger ?
Does it need one ?
How did you get the cam gear off? And the crank gear off to?
Good reminder - thanks. I added a link to the "Removal" video in the description above.
Help, Does anyone know if the command gear of the f1000 xl 98 is made from celeron, steel or iron?
How can you loosen then retighten the pan and it not leak?
It wasn't started between. Gasket material still pliable, forgiving
Good video.
Those tabs are from the injection mold
So were they left on by factory error?
@@michaeljones2384 no when they inject liquid rubber and close it off those tabs are where the rubber enter from and are the shape of the nozzle it's just excess from the molding process
Does your engine have the oil slinger as well ?
Oil slinger? You mean the pump? It’s in the pan not on the front of the engine
@@leifmakuch9716 Oil slinger is a sort of stepped washer that fits on the end of the crankshaft snout.
It keeps excess oil from getting to the timing cover oil seal.. It has a groove for the crank key.

if I was to hire someone to all this to my truck what should I expect to pay for parts and labor please?
awesome.thank you.
I have a question I did my timeing gears in my truck and was spinning my crank and cam at different times to make sure nothing was locked up I installed my gears the way there saposta be with the timeing tits touching (lined up ) is there any way I could be 180 degrees out of time by doing this
cool chanel very well edited
Thanks man. This video is right up your alley isn't it! If you have any insight on the front gasket confusion I had at about 3:30 any comments here on what I did wrong, etc would probably be helpful to people working on theirs.
Lock tight on then timing cover bolts will keep them from leaking
Where is your cooling fan shroud,it is needed on this engine and 5W20 is the wrong viscosity oil for this engine my friend. I know I own this same engine and same year model. And I'm a retired Ford Technician. That oil is way to thin for this engine.
Alguien sabe colo ponerlo a tiempo con pistola
well the rubber tits that you cut off of rubber gasket are used to line up and hold gasket in place. they snap into small holes in oil pan
At 6:58 Always like The Flash - special effect it makes me laugh
5w-20? That seems insanely thin for an engine like that. I'd do no lighter than 10w-30.
Peapl do anything for money record everything they do lots of us now this and if you trying to teach some one going fast this is easy
Don't follow this guys advice he doesn't know mechanics from a hole in the ground
Very good 👍
