  • We're trying to fix a 4 wheeler that only runs on choke. It doesn't matter how much you clean the carburetor or adjust the carburetor the engine in this 4 wheeler will only run with the choke on. Once you turn the choke off, the engine will die. This means we're not getting enough fuel for the amount of air we are bringing in with the choke off. The air fuel mixture is not correct. There must something blocking fuel flow deep inside the carburetor. Let's see if we can get this 2020 Yamaha Grizzly 90 running properly.

    I used to have to pay the local shop $150 to do this. Now it's all me. lol. I've done it like three times on my '03 Vinson now. DIY was an even greater goal after I found out that my pilot mix screw came back to me FULLY SEATED on my 2000 King Quad from the shop. I knew something had to be up when it was hard to keep running when cold AND the exhaust header was glowing cherry red after a little bit of time.... 0 is a long way from 2-5/8 turns out.

      That's awesome. It's nice being self reliant. Thanks for sharing that.

    I am having problems on a 2010 atv. So do you think this is what is making the carb leak from the drain when the choke is on, then shut off when trying to turn the choke off?

      Do you mean gas is coming out of the overfill tube? If so, the float inside the carb is probably stuck. Tapping on the outside of the float bowl with a screwdriver might knock it loose.

    What about when it's fuel injection, no carb? I have a 2013 yz450f, and it won't run with choke off.
    Thanks for help

      My guess off the top of my head would be fuel is being restricted somewhere else then. Crud from the tank could be clogging anything from the gas tank to the injector. Maybe the filter is clogged or dirty. You need fuel, air, spark & compression to run. I would confirm that fuel is making its way unrestricted to the cylinder. If you don’t find anything doing that I would do all the cheap stuff such as new spark plug, clean or replace the air filter, check any rubber hoses or lines for cracks or maybe even being disconnected. Is the gas old?

    I have a 2022 grizzly 90 and it runs and drives without choke but it keeps stalling every couple minutes and I keep replacing spark plugs every couple months cause they go bad sounds like it’s running rich but any suggestions?

      The only thing I could suggest is adjusting the carburetor. Other than that I'm not sure. It's basically new so I couldn't imagine anything being worn out or bad on it. I hope you figure it out.

    If mine does the same, could it possibly also mean I need a bigger pilot jet? Mine has exact symptoms

      Is that yes lol

      Anything is possible. But if you have the carburetor & jet that it came with from the factory then I would highly doubt that. If your carburetor is clean inside then maybe you have a restriction in the tank, petcock, line or filter. Or you need to adjust the idle screw to let more gas in. If you a Grizzly 90, I've come to realize they're just cold blooded for some reason. I hope you get it figured out.

    I put a new carb and still only runs on choke??? Any suggestions!!!

    • @freemansgarageextra
      @freemansgarageextra  Год назад

      The only suggestion I have is that there's a fuel delivery issue. There need to be the right mixture of fuel & air to run. More air needs more fuel. Less air needs less fuel. So if you add more air by opening the choke & there is not enough fuel for that much air it won't run. Somewhere between the tank & the combustion chamber the fuel is getting restricted. If your bike or whatever is old there could be a little clog anywhere in the tank, petcock, line, filter, carb. I would check all of it as well as play with the mixture screw on the carb. I hope you figure it out. It's hard to help from a computer but if you have more questions I will respond.
