- I Was spearfishing with a buddy of mine when a wave pushed a Portuguese Man O’ War right over my head. I didn’t even see it, but immediately felt the tentacles on my neck and it sent me into a world of pain. Soon as I lifted my head out of the water I felt it push up against my lips and cheeks and the tentacles latched on to my mask and neck. Luckily my boy managed to grab it off of my face (you can still see it floating in the background) and i was still able to swim to shore where paramedics soon met me and sprayed me down with vinegar. Never dive alone!
As a portuguese i apologise for this man o wars behaviour

No more dangerous than in the surf right on shore.

That's really crazy. Makes me feel like I'd never want to swim in waters off the Florida coasts. And seeing that Man O' War next to you was weird. Basically what it is, a floating plastic bag that drags behind a net of paralyzing stingers
Man O' Wars just travel the currents and the wind. Theoretically you could find one anywhere but they prefer warmer waters
They’re in the Pacific Ocean too bro you might want to stay away from oceans in general if you don’t like these guys

Okinawa has a similar version. Been stung twice by them. I still remember the 10 minutes of burning pain.
Don’t know why the algorithm brought me here but this was definitely a trip down memory lane.
I got really badly stung by one when I was a little kid. Wrapped around one of my ankles and sprawled over most of my torso. I legitly thought I was gonna die. The initial sting felt like electrocution but then I remember it just feeling like I was on fire for the next hour or so. Then I got really badly sick the next week. This guy is lucky he had a wetsuit on that prevented more contact with the tentacles.
When I went to Florida these things were everywhere. I remember seeing them washed up on the beach and floating on the water. They looked so pretty, im glad I didn’t touch them.
good to carry an inflatable emergency device in these scenarios, just never know

Jellyfish swimming away like dang, the one that got away
Hey, could we use this clip in a video about menowar?
Hi
Right before I graduated from Texas A&M with my MS in Geophysics I went to Australia with my neighbor who was working on his Doctorate in Zoological Toxinolgy. We were at a Beach that had sting nets to keep jellyfish out. When I see people in panic mode bringing a young woman on shore. She had almost drowned after being stung by a very small Box Jellyfish that had managed to get through the nets. Not from the physiological effects of the venom mind you, but from passing out fr the actual pain induced by the small Box Jelly. We spoke with a Man that had been bitten by an adult Coastal Taipan 3rd most venomous snake on Earth. (Of course at that level of toxicity it’s really kind of pointless to compare 1-3 as that’s like asking which would you rather be shot in the head with? A 50BMG or a 44 magnum?) It just doesn’t matter at that point. But the man still survived. But the woman stung by a Jellyfish no bigger than a golfball is the one that almost died. Quite remarkable really, as had it not been for the copious amount of lifeguard and EMS working those beaches she wouldn’t have survived that incident.
You must be the type of person who likes hearing themselves talk based on all the pointless details you added to this comment.....
@@thedoge9590 and you must be the annoying person that talks down on everyone for nl reason
In this video though its just a manowar which most beach going aussies get stung multiple times a year and you almost never hear of serious illness or deaths. Box jellies and irakunjis on the other hand as you say are extremely dangerous and the more surface area of your skin touches it the more likely you are to die. You can touch the ones (box jellies) that wash up with the tip of your finger and the pain will last for 5 minutes but if you wrapped it around your arm youd likely die and have extreme pain.
@@rileysmall4317 Florida box jellies arent as dangerous as the ones in austrailia but still if you are having symptoms of an allergic reaction get medical help

I know I'm probably the only one, but I had to look up what a Portuguese Man O' War was.
Why not Brazilian?
@@Comeswoopfam Because it's a Portuguese Man O' War, not a Brazilian Man O' War
A ship used to establish naval dominance of course.
You may be. We have discovery channel in the US
It's interesting hearing from people from different parts of the world. Here (S. FL) they wash up on the beach frequently when we have onshore winds so everyone here knows what they are, but being from a different area I guess you guys never see one. Now you know, if you see it on the beach, don't touch it. The tentacles are what you have to watch out for, and they can be very long.
Looks like BATMAN met his match this time.

Finally, Florida man gets a defeat.

Man-o-war got him right in the face as well… ouch.
That was a HUGE one! Where I live, they’re smaller than my hand. That must’ve hurt. I’ve gotten stung maybe 3-4 times by really small ones when I go camping. Hope he’s alright, you guys were far from shore!
This has never happened in my bedroom.
This has to be the only war thing that we, Portuguese, are good at!
No lie or exaggeration: My granddaughter and I were parasailing in Florida 1200 feet up, when the captain cut the engines for a dunk in the ocean (something they always do). I was looking around for sharks. Instead, we landed in the ocean, surrounded by thousands of jellyfish. Fortunately, we were not stung.

I met them in Siargao - Philippines at "Pacifico Beach" - Those creatures are NO JOKE.., very very painful - swimming to it can be in shock and drawn !
they were there? Thats the one beach I didnt get to go too. Went to daku and cemetary everyday. Never saw them.
And Pacifico is really on the outskirts, what did you do to remedy it?
Did they have a small boat nearby? I don’t know about snorkeling almost a half a mile from shore without any backup. Leaves no room for anything to go wrong imo.
What’s the other option 😂 obviously they didn’t have a boat.
@@james505ism How can you not comprehend that I said either they have a boat or they have nothing? Where did I imply there was another option?
@@NemeanLion- because obviously they do not have a boat 😂 why would they choose to swim half a mile back to shore after being stung by a paralysing jellyfish if they had a boat available??
@@james505ism Because people do dumb s*** every day. That’s why. Maybe you trust people to make smart choices but I don’t. So keep typing your “lol’s” as if that adds any credibility to your trolling.
@@NemeanLion- im not trolling, I found it to be a generally strange yet amusing observation that you would consider there to be a boat just out of shot waiting for them, yet theyve instead decided not to get on and to swim a kilometre back to shore instead whilst potentially entering a state of paralysis 😂 Agreed, the dumb bit however was them evidently going so far out without access to a boat.
