  • Holy Liftin! I was striper fishing and hooked this Great White Shark. Check out my other You Tube videos. For the doubters, the shark has been varified to be a juvenile great white shark by three biologists from these establishments - 1. The Beford Institute of Oceanography in Nova Scotia, 2. the University of New England in Massachusetts and 3. Department of Integrative Biology from the University of Guelph in Ontario. The flinch you gave off when you saw the shark surface is absolutely what I would've done, probably so hard I would've dropped all that gear! That baby was still big enough to do damage, at least big enough to drag you about and mess with you, so it's surprising to see how calm it was. The hook will rust and fall out fairly quickly and there is only about 30 feet of line which should not pose a problem for it. My thought was that if I fought it, that it would probably take all my line off the reel which would be well over 200 yards of line. Then that could have been very dangerous for the life of fish. I was really hoping it was the over 40 inch striper that I was looking for. I had a ton of thoughts going through my mind in those few seconds after seeing it the 1st time and I ended up cutting the line at the perfect time leaving only 30 or less of line for it to deal with. If I had known it was a shark I probably would have dealt with it the same way but I wouldn't have stayed another hour to fish. Holy Liftin! • @FishingwithRick-bw4bf
      @FishingwithRick-bw4bf  9 месяцев назад +3

      It won't. The hook will fall out and there is only about 30 feet of line which should not hinder it at all. I too have a love for all animals which you can see if you watch my seagull video.

      @dutchgirldisco 9 месяцев назад +2

      @@FishingwithRick-bw4bf thank you for your response. I see videos where they catch sharks to tag & release and find hooks in them. So the line won't catch on anything or tie around anything while connected to the shark ? 30 feet seems like a lot.

    • @FishingwithRick-bw4bf
      @FishingwithRick-bw4bf  9 месяцев назад

      I was in 40 feet of water and the shark was directly below me when I cut the line. It's 1st pass was very close to me and this one was deeper because I couldn't see it. My guess is that it is between 10 to 30 feet below me so that is the amount of line it still has. No one can say with 100% certainty that the line won't hurt it but the chances would be low. I know that it had no problem taking a ton of line off my reel in a split second so had I not cut the line when I did, it may have taken off with all the line off my reel. That would have been more than 200 yards and that would have a high chance of hurting this beautiful fish. Check out my seagull video and you will see how I care for animals and don't forget to suscribe to my channel. Cheers

    Man... if it wasn't for the tail i don't know how you would know the difference. Looking at pictures porpoise tails are horizontal (up and down movement) and great white are vertical (side to side).
    We all can stop the video and analyze but porpoise seems like a really good guess. Especially if they are known to be in your area and great whites aren't.
    Regardless nice on keeping your composure on a big catch.

    I stopped the video with the fish in the air and could not identify it as a Great White Shark. Is there a tell to identify it as such with which I am unfamiliar? The fisherman got a much better look, so perhaps the I.D. came from him. Assuming it was a Great White, it was not a particularly big one unless you are hooked up with it while in a tiny boat, then you have to wonder who has who.

      I did not know until the next day what it was. Two biologists from two differing universities confirmed that it is a juvenile great white shark. They said the real tell was the shape of the nose which is hard to see in the video unless you can go farme by frame. It looked like a whale to me in my 12 foot kayak though, lol.

      The side to side s-shaped action of the body when it swam under the boat at 0:41s indicates beyond a reasonable doubt that it’s a shark(the action matches for a vertical tail-fin). A porpoise would have had to be up-and-down (horizontal tail-fin). Not too many other options for that size creature. Amazing experience, and I think I would have had to change my underwear was I in the same position. I have recently taken to kayak-fishing, but will be sticking to lakes and river estuaries for now, because of videos like these!

    Man you got lucky.. that could have been much worse. Should have cut the line sooner though! It could have dragged you off the kayak with him.

      The 1st time it went under the kayak I thought it was a porpoise, dolphin or a very large striped bass. I was fishing for the big bass and l only ruled out it being a large bass when it jumped. I then cut the line the 2nd time it came to my kayak which is seconds later so really I cut the line at the very best time. I never thought it was a shark and even continued fishing an hour after freeing the shark. After learning that it was a white shark my thoughts were what could have happened if I had continued to fight it and it decided to come back to the kayak a 3rd time but be aggressive. Cheers

    What size hook were you using? Live lining a mack or blue out on a yak is a good way to hook a shark.

    • @FishingwithRick-bw4bf
      @FishingwithRick-bw4bf  8 месяцев назад

      The hooks were 3/0. It works well for stripers too. I hooked another shark out there a couple days ago but it just cut the braid and was gone in a couple seconds. We were not using live bait though. I am hearing about more and more hook ups with sharks out there now from fellow striper fishermen. To close for comfort at .41 seconds in! That Great White went ride under you thank God it didn't jump out like it did before you cut it!

      You're right and I thought about that alot after learning that it was a white shark. I'd say he was just having a look at me that time and then came back for me to cut the line after the breach. I shudder to think what could have happen if I didn't cut the line and it came back a 3rd time. Cheers

    "Suppose you fell over with this fish. Is there anything you could do? Sure. Pray. It'd be like falling out of an airplane without a parachute and hoping you'll land in a haystack.
