  • My first experience hooking a jumping Mako Shark from a kayak.
I had headed out solo around 11am and found the fishing very slow. While I had caught up with a couple of other kayak fishermen on the water they had all headed in as the wind was getting up.
Not long after I hooked into a good fish then all of a sudden it took off in the opposite direction followed by a big black shadow under the kayak and the drag started screaming just before a Mako launched into the air.
The shark then managed to also eat the line on my softbait rod before breaking the initial line so I continued to fight it on the Catch 4pc softbait rod.
The fight lasted about 20 min all up and multiple times I had it within 10 meters of the kayak and at one stage I almost had my leader. I was hopeful it was going to do more jumps but sadly I missed one on video. Eventually when I had it close to the kayak it started to make a dive for my anchor so I quickly cut the line loosing less than 10m of braid.
