Walmart has an Ugly Stik that's made for backpacking. It has a reel. You'd be better off with it and some better quality line and lures and it would still be cheaper. Tougher for sure.

They're stronger than people give them credit for. Mine is a fairly cheap Shakespeare, and I imagine more high-end collapsible rods are even studier.
As an avid outdoorsmen, the issue I have is what the rod can do for the price. I live in AK, and that will barely work unless I'm targeting the smallest species this state has to offer, and there's always the off chance of hooking up to something unexpected. Look at the flex, it's obviously a small fish rod, but there are always decent sized fish around in AK. If I accidentally hooked up to a Pike, that rod is breaking, or the bearings are going to be blown out in the spool, and don't let me get started on salmon. If I want to mess around like that and see a reel explode I'd get a little kids zebco, spool it up with 20lb braid, and wait for chum/coho season. I'd pay a fraction of the price too. Sniping sales, I've built a number of bullet proof salmon rigs for under 100. That's an introductory rod for people that barely hike, hunt, or fish.
They're not the most durable, but even worse is the action. They just suck. You can get rods in 4 piece if you really wanted to, and the action is still pretty good. I guess it all depends on what you're gonna need it for.
