Bob Builder lmao you’re funny madden fanboy. First off, even if he didn’t get injured he would’ve stuck to baseball and not play much football. *The greatest football player of all time* This! This I can definitely get on board for. Greatest running back? I think that goes to Barry Sanders. (And I say that as someone who's favorite *athlete* ever is Payton and is a Bears fan to this day because of him). But with all due respect to Xavier about LT, I think Walter contributed so many others things to the game other than running back: blocking, receiving, blocking, blocking! And filling in as QB when necessary. I don't know of he ever did, but I have no doubt he could play linebacker if a spot was needed! And as for running, he made you pay for every tackle. No running out of bounds. Sometimes even giving up the open field so he could hit someone! You knew you were going to be in a game when you played against Walter Payton. His off field conditioning was second to none, all in preparation for Sunday (or Monday. Or Thursday. Or Saturday. NFL programming has changed!) Check out 2:47. The way he effortlessly runs up that hill doesn't convey how incredibly hard that is and how unbelievably strong his legs are. That was for the game! And as an ambassador for the NFL....well.....there's a reason there's now an award handed out in his name. Yeah, teams had to change their game plans because of Lawrence Taylor. I get that. But for me, Payton is the Greatest Football Player Of All Time.
Damn Walter Payton was "The beast". This guy played in a era where the defense didn't care and smacked into anything coming their way. I saw in one clip he jumped over the oline into the endzone for a TD but he landed on his neck 😥. Greatest runner back of all time. I'll never forget the Day #34 passed I cried my Eyes out . It was very Sad here in Chicago. The Best Running back and Football player of all time WALTER PAYTON !!! RIP 😭 IM A CHICAGO BEARS FAN FOR LIFE !!! BEAR DOWN !
I'm watching this with tears in my eyes. I was a young man when Walter Payton played his 13 years in the NFL. There was never anybody like him before or since. He never, ever gave up on a play until he was down on the turf - and sometimes even when you thought he was down he'd suddenly pop up, shake off would-be tacklers and get more yards than you ever expected. In my humble opinion he exemplifies the best of athletic endeavor and is a special example to us all, in sports or no.
There aren't enough ways to say all of who Walter Payton was and is. One of a kind in every way. I never met him, but I'm glad I knew him. His memory will live on till the end of time. His greatness will never be equaled.
We lost you 20 years ago today. I'll never forget that hall of fame induction. You were my idol growing up. I was destroyed the day you passed. RIP Sweetness you were truly an amazing man
I Remember that day when he passed away I was in the hospital waiting for my wife to give birth to our son who was born in 1999 November 1 at 12:06 as I walked out to the waiting room looked at the TV and saw the news that Walter Payton has passed away and 1999 November 1 at noon I think I cried harder watching that then watching my wife gave birth to our second son....😢🇺🇸..
This was what a football player was meant to be, humble, ferocious, God like, a great teammate! When Jim Brown, calls you the greatest running back of all time, there no need to question who's better!!
To me, Walter Payton was the greatest football player of all time. Not just running back. He ran, he tackled, he blocked, he protected his quarterback, he passed, he caught and he looked good doing it all. But the thing I remember most was; anytime a player tackled Sweetness alone, that player got hurt. He was a man's man. Tough as nails. Hard hitting as a freight train.
That conference about him dying is the most heartbreaking thing I've seen, he didn't want to die 😥 😫. Walter Payton is my favorite player of all time hands down, no-one was more complete than him. If only I could go back in time and see him play

I had a pass to visit the area where the teams stayed in their huge motor homes. 7:30 AM on Saturday morning i went directly to Walters mobile home and asked for him but he was eating breakfast. So I continued walking. I walked 50-75 away when one of Walters men came and got me and said Walter wanted me to come back, i was excited and shocked.
