  • One of the greatest runningbacks to ever play in the NFL. Known as "Sweetness", Payton broke Jim Browns' rushing record, tallying 16,726 rushing yards and 110 rushing touchdowns. Walter was a complete player, throwing 8 touchdowns and catching 15 touchdowns en route to the Hall of Fame, along with 9x Pro Bowls and 5x All Pro.

    Greatest RB of all time. Period. Others were faster, stronger, or shiftier, but no one before or since has put it all together the way Walter did. Running, blocking, throwing, catching, and even punting. He was also one of the nicest, hardest working, most humble men you could ever hope to meet.

    • @billtownbiker

      @🏈Savage Red Sports🏈 love how you have to try to insult someone to try and make an incorrect point. Barry Sanders was definitely a one man gang and underrated but definitely wasn't a Walter Payton

    • @spjr99
      @spjr99 Год назад +2

      @🏈Savage Red Sports🏈 it's a different conversation. barry sanders was the best pure runner we have ever seen in the NFL. payton was a more "complete" back. im biased as a bears fan but I believe payton was better purely because he carried his teams to success and had a bigger impact on all facets of the game. Sanders was easily more agile and swift than payton but payton was just different. he was sanders size but ran like a power back mixed with a speed back

    • @spjr99
      @spjr99 Год назад +1

      @🏈Savage Red Sports🏈 the difference is balance. payton could get hit by anyone and stay on his feet, barry would just avoid them

    • @haroldfarquad6886
      @haroldfarquad6886 Год назад +2

      The humility part seems to be a common theme I love among the greatest RBs: Walter, Barry, Earl Campbell, Ricky Williams (yes, I think he belongs in the conversation), probably throw in Tony Dorsett, and even LT. None of them were mouthy or ostentatious, just whooped your ass and politely handed the ref the ball until they got a chance to do it again.

    • @haroldfarquad6886
      @haroldfarquad6886 Год назад

      @@spjr99 This is the correct take. Barry was the best pure runner, the greatest all time to run the ball, but Payton was the greatest all time to occupy the position. The two claims are not identical. If I was building my all-time team, Barry and Earl Campbell would be my two back rotation, but if I had to choose only one back to be on the team, Payton would likely *just* edge out LaDainian Tomlinson. I commented elsewhere, Payton is the hybrid offspring of Earl Campbell and Gale Sayers - hard to make an argument he wasn't the best asset at RB.

    For the majority of his career, the Bears had one offensive capability, and he was it. Everyone knew he was going to get the ball, yet few could do a thing about it. Yes, he got crushed on occasion, and yes, he missed 3rd down conversions, but when an entire defense knows you are getting the ball, play, after play, after play, its miraculous what he accomplished. A true GOAT!

Lot of people , including me, blamed Ditka for many years for not letting Walter score that but in hindsight, it just made him that much of a bigger legend! I think Emmitt Smith had a great admiration for Walter and I am glad it was him to break his record. Emmitt would never had survived the shitty teams that Walter carried on his back. I had a sports illustrated poster on my wall of Walter in high school. My friends asked why? I said, he showed up every day with the attitude of, if we lose, it won't be because of me".....Legend!

      He was also viewed as a liability in short yardage situations since nearly 1 run in 4 was for zero or negative yards. Enormous talent… but soundly behind Payton and Brown. And clearly ahead of Emmitt, LT, Faulk, Dickerson, OJ, Campbell and Peterson.

    I don’t know if anyone will ever read these comments, but as a lifelong Bear Fan, Sweetness was my first boyhood idol. Amazing football player who did everything well. He also missed, I believe, only one to two games in his career. After watching some of these passes he his making also makes me think he should have been the Bears QB as well. I mean really, he had to be better then Avellini, Phipps and Evans in those early years. 😂 I am sure some of you have seen the segment Angry Runs by Kyle Brandt on NFL Network. I think Payton could have been a winner every week. I mean he was only 5’10 maybe, but he punished defenders and never ran out of bounds. RIP Sweetness. You are on the Mount Rushmore of greatest Bears ever.

    I used to watch the Bears just to watch him run back when the Bears were losing. He was the one bright spot on the whole team. He knew how to change directions and turn on the jets in the open field. And he would outrun them! He had a good straight arm, too.
    When they finally put together a great team around him they finally won a Super Bowl.
    Greatness!
    They called him Sweetness because he was so soft spoken.

      @@UNIQUEWALKER-pl9bp Ge He had a strong left arm
      And would often run 20 yards just off a left Arm. The Bears had Butkus and Payton. Payton and Jordan were a joy to watch. The Bulls had Jordan. I remember when they were the only star on the team. It took a long time to assemble a great team around them. I remember Jerry Sloan. Dirty player.
      We had Ray Nitchkie, Vince Lombardi and Bart Starr. Immortals! But I really admired and respected Butkus, Jordan and Payton.
      Man, when they would hesitate for a second and shift gears it was breathtaking.! You never knew what they were going to do. They were unstoppable!

    Walter Payton was a very kind man, except on the football field. He was brutal at times, but what he ALWAYS was was humble, never gloating with in zone dances or celebrations upon scoring. There will never be another Walter Payton...NEVER.

    Walter Payton's nickname on the gridiron was "Sweetness". Even though watching him run the ball was sweet to watch, he ran every play with brutality and tenacity. He could cut back against the field to avoid getting hit but he would prefer to run the defender over.
    He had strong legs and a small but durable powerful compact body that punished the defenders whenever they collided with him. His trademark forearm and trademark jolt to the defender's facemask was a thing of beauty and the way he ran that ball cuffed in one hand also made his running style so sweet to watch.
    Caveat: If y'all wanna know who Jim Brown is referring to when he's taking shots at a running back who avoids defenders, ran out of bounds on plays and who didn't play a physical brand of football and who Jim Brown did not personally congratulate for breaking his record, He is referring to Franco Harris who I believe broke Brown's record before Payton (but don't quote me on that part). Edit: Franco Harris although a threat to break Jim Brown's record before Payton, he fell short of the record by 120 yards. He was at the end of his career when he was traded to the Seattle Seahawks who didn't use him as the featured back. Thus Franco miss breaking Jim Brown's record which I am sure made Jim Brown happy since he didn't care for Franco too much,.
    Jim Brown could not stand the great Franco Harris. Harris played running back for the Pittsburg Steelers back in the 70's and early 80's and when he was a threat to break Jim Brown's record, Brown didn't respect Harris because Harris, although he was a big running back, refused to play a physical style of football.
    Harris would often run out of bounds as opposed to take hits from the defense. I personally don't blame Harris for the way he played and I think he was a smart man for playing that way. I wish more players in football would protect their health and try to avoid as much physical contact as humanely possible.

    Waler Payton has the best run that went for maybe 50 years. That run against KC I saw as a kid on a re-run, and couldn't believe what I was seeing. I couldn't understand how anyone could be that good.

    True story!
    He said “ because you’re wearing Bears clothes, I’ll sign it again.”
    After he signed the first time, the marker was dried out so you could barely make out the signature. So I asked him to sign it again with different marker.

    I still think Barry Sanders is the greatest RB of all time, but Walter Payton was a test tube hybrid made in a lab using the DNA from Earl Campbell and Gale Sayers. You can't convince me otherwise.
    Sweetness had the buttery smoothness of Gale and the tenacity of Earl. Fun fact: if you look up the word "tenacious" in a dictionary, it reads "see Walter Payton."
