At the time watching it, as 13 year old, I got the big tears in my eyes, slowly began to run down my cheeks. Those tears are bigger today at 60; especially with his early passing in 1999. Whether we were on defense or offense, Walter Payton was our hero, and our big brother. Thank you for recreating such a big part of our childhood. ❤ #34
Same, saw this on tv as a young teenager when it aired, I think at halftime, tears, I’ll turn 60 in August and still leaves me in awe and I must’ve said “wow” at least 10 times… He was the best! #34
@@FlashToGreen AND STILL IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There's that famous quote of Walter's too. "When you're good at something, you'll tell everyone. When you're great at it, they'll TELL YOU!!!!!!! R.I.P WALTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was 11 when I saw the original CBS sports tribute that I was searching for today. I am now 57 and this recreation brought the tears to my eyes that I was expecting. My wife and seven year old son saw Jared Payton recently on his way to the WGN studios. He was so nice and approachable, got down to my son's level and showed him a video of his father playing football. Had I been there, I would have lost it. What a great song, and tribute, to my favorite player ever.
I remember seeing the original video many years ago when it aired to finish off the local sports segment on WBBM-TV, CBS, in Chicago. It's as fantastic today as it was back then. Thanks!!
I had the pleasure of meeting this special man and football player after retirement. My wife and I met him in Scottsdale Arizona in a mall at a food court. He was polite and genuine and we talked over 45 minutes. One of the best days of my life. #34 Simply Sweetness and Hall of Fame!
Had the pleasure of meeting Walter Payton at Arizona State the Bears held a one week practice at our facility, we talked every day for that whole week he was extremely pleasant, nice and special, here’s what he told me,he said bird I may not be the biggest, or the strongest or the fastest, but I am the smartest. Love always..
That song, that man......forever linked! When CBS did that bit back in the 70s on Walter, it was magic, mythical, legend- able (lol), pitch-perfect. Like the song, Walter is immortal.
I’ve been looking for this video for 40 years-and although it might not be the same I saw on cbs in the 70s, it’s damn good. The greatest match of a song to an athlete in history. Sweetness.
I so remember watching him with my Dad as a young girl and was just in awe of him. I wasn't a Chicago Bears fan, but could ALWAYS appreciate an awesome football player and Walter Payton was Simply The Best.
Same here, man. I really give this video props because it may not be the same as the one I remember as a kid but it gives me the same feelings. This guy was my hero growing up so thank you for making this video.
A tear-inducing video if there ever was one, especially when first shown. This wasn't done quite the way the original was, but it's still very poignant. My girl was with me, but that didn't stop me from tearing up. She gave me a big hug when it was over. I couldn't stop crying. Thanks for posting. R.I.P. Walter.
I remember when he had his press conference announcing his illness. I cried as much that day as I did the day he passed. Luckily, I had the pleasure of meeting him in person. He was quite the character. RIP Sweetness!
Best all around football player ever. He was the Bear's back up field goal kicker and punter. I was hanging around the Bear's practice field with a buddy after they finished practice in Platteville one day back in the mid-eighties. Practice was open to the public back then. Hotter than heck. Payton stayed out on the field to practice his punting. He asked me and my friend if we'd shag punts for him. HELL YEAH. Best day ever. Class act.
I remember that tribute well. CBS did a great job on it considering how simple the format was back then. I have searched many times for it as well, looking at old clips of Brent Musberger and the gang of The NFL Today show, great memories from my childhood. I consider yours a tribute to the tribute.
Same here. Grew up in the 70's and WP will always just be "Sweetness" to me. Everywhere I went on Sunday as a child for a relative's house, if the Bears were on TV - I'll ask to go in another room and be allowed to watch it.
I remember this also.It was 77. I could’ve done Joe Avellini’s job, handoff to Payton, hand off to Payton, throw an incomplete pass, handoff to Walter Payton. Just imagine 11 defensive players lined up and they’re all looking at you. They know your getting the ball and they can’t stop you from first and 10 yardage. He brought the intimidation. He brought the pain. You didn’t run him out of bounds. He ran right through you. Teams like Dallas the Redskins 49ers New York Giants walking into a game not saying we are going to beat the Bears today. They are saying today we are going to stop Walter Payton. And they couldn’t, Walter Payton was Superman.
The way Sweetness would put his head down and deliver the punishment to the defender reminded me of my 2nd favorite #34 Earl Campbell You Were the best. RIP Walter Payton
Dude, I’ve been looking for that CBS video since the dawn of RUclips. I don’t know how you did it, but that’s an awesome summary of his remarkable career. You hit every memorable run. And let’s not forget, he had a few pitch passes for TDs AND lined up under center when they were so beat up at QB. Great job 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I don't think that it it. I used to have it on VHS tape. Pretty sure it was done for the Bears Giants playoff game. Before, halftime, or after.. I don't recall. I almost positive it had Bud Grant the coach of the Vikings watching him in awe and not getting mad when he ran for 275yds against them. Uncharacteristic of him. Unless I remembering that video wrong, I will never forget that look on his face. Saw it later since I was at that playoff game. I was also at the game when he ran for 275yds.
I just searched "Nobody Does it Better Walter Payton." I can remember the video like it was yesterday. Nobody did it better than Walter. I'll never forgive Ditka for giving the touchdown to the Fridge rather than Payton in the Super Bowl.
Walter Payton was my favorite player growing up in the 70s and 80s! Sad he passed away at a young age. I am a Viking fan always was but "Sweetness" became my favorite! Because he is the greatest RB ever! RIP
The Legend of this Man, and subsequent first-hand stories I heard from people who knew Walter Payton served as a beacon for my life as a young man. Very nice offering...
I am now 57 and recall him running holding the football away from his body weaving in out like no one was around him he was an amazing athlete and work ethic he had the players could not do today. He trained in the sand dunes.
I saw a version of this video in the 80s and it made me want to become a film editor, which I did for 30 years. Love the song, love Walter. Still get emotional when I see it!
One of my favorite Walter memories is the way he would DESTROY someone attempting to tackle him near the sideline, rather than running out of bounds. Best ever ❤ Love you, Walter - you made growing up watching the Bears special.
That elbow-arm combination was known as "Flipper" - that punished his opponents. Destroyed them with straight-arms, as well. In the video where he leans in and punishes that one tackler - yep, he was also know for that, too! LOL
My apologies to everyone who didn't grow up in the 70s/80s. If you got to see Sweetness play live, and the original CBS tribute video when it originally aired, count yourself fortunate. There will never be another like Walter Payton.
Thank you so much for posting! I too remember seeing this tribute after his retirement and had been looking for it. Outside of my parents, Payton is the only one I ever considered a childhood "hero" of mine. Greatest ALL-AROUND football player ever IMO.
I wish I could be more original than others, but man, I can't. Another middle-aged guy who saw this piece as a kid, remembered, and wanted to remember it better. Thanks so much, I too have looked for this every couple of years. I'da believed this was it if told so. It's so weird. I can't remember what I had for lunch but can remember this halftime bit from 40+ years ago. Carly sure doesn't hurt.
I believe it was Thanksgiving day 77 or 78 that they aired the original video and I was at my grandparents house for the holiday. Love it, this is as close as it gets to that day. THANKS
I found your video because I was searching for the exact video you speak of from 40 years ago, or so, I clearly remember watching it in awe, covered in goose bumps. Yours is very well done!! Thanks!!
Alan - Thank you. I was just thinking of that NFL on CBS tribute from 1977 today and wanted to check when I got home to see if anyone posted it - close to the original; I remember Phylis George introducing it and I knew it was from late 1977 at the end of the regular season. And the song and movie came out earlier in the year. A great moment in time when the NFL still stood tall. We were fortunate to grow up when we did and enjoy the last golden years of professional football. Thank you again for remembering and caring enough to giving it a shot - your synch up with the music is great and most of that footage was on the original CBS reel.
The Payton one was awesome.I also remember a tribute to the Steelers featuring the song”Midnight Blue” as well as a Tarkenton tribute set to “My Way”.All incredibly well done.....somebody’s got to have them somewhere
I remember watching the game he beat O.J.'s single game rushing record. I didn't know who he was before that game. One of those memories of me and my dad watching football. I ache for those days sometimes. I was blessed to grow up in a time of the world's greatest athletes and musicians. RIP Walter Payton.
I too have searched youtube many times over the years looking for this. I only saw the original 1 time and never forgot it. Nice job on the recreation. I wish the NFL would release the original. I believe it was aired at halftime on Thanksgiving day... don't remember the exact year (early 80's) Sir Walter was my favorite.
Thanks for this. I remember that watching that video as a kid as well. As a Minnesotan it is sad to see so many great plays against the Vikings! But he was the best. I'm so glad you included that blocking segment at 2:34. I heard a story about some NFL coach who made his running backs watch a video he had made of just Walter Payton blocking... he was a great running back not just for his yards and TDs but he understood pass protection and could see a blitz coming.
Very much appreciate the kind things that you said about the video Douglas! The only thing I couldn't find online to use in my video that was in the original is I remember the camera had a focus of then head coaching great, Bud Grant, and he apparently was watching Walter run for a long touchdown because all they showed was his face looking in one direction then moving all the way across to the other and then just had this look on his face as he shook his head in disbelief. It was one of the highlights that stuck with me in the original video. Thanks once again!
The 19 20 yard run at Vikings is the true Payton. Takkes it off taklkle. Burst. Puts his head down. Runs through a tackle then finishes off with heart inside the 5. Best 19 20 run of all time.
This takes me right back to the day I, too, watched this video in 1977 and found a new hero in Walter Payton. This was before music videos, so to me, this was the first and the best. Like Walter...THE BEST.
I also remember that video and found this looking for the one from the past. Walter is this Packer fan's most favorite football player of all time. There is no back in the league today who can do what he did, in the manner in which he did it. Tough and durable.
I went to the celebration at Soldier Field for Walter with my young daughter. As I was driving down LSD, it didn't hit me until the stadium was in view when the tears started. My daughter asked me why I was crying, and I told her that, unfortunately, I didn't have a lot of heroes in my life. Walter was my hero...
Another clue for helping unearth the original CBS video from 1977 is that around the time Walter broke the all time record, or maybe right after he retired-- Johnny Morris did a Special titled, "Run Sweet Walter" (or at least that's the name I can remember), and in that Special, they played the 1977 video tribute with Carly Simon. So, hope that helps, I wasn't able to locate the original on youtube. Maybe if anyone knows someone at WBBM Chicago, they might have easier time finding the "Run Sweet Walter" tape. Good Luck! What a hero to grow up with!
Walter Payton is the best football player he jumps over players and he died in a young age Thank you for making this from this video I learned who he was 😢
Thank you Alan for posting this fantastic tribute to a true hero. I really can’t stop watching it. It really helps me savor something special. As a beginning fan at 8 yrs old, I can remember watching the NFL today (which was my favorite show “you are looking LIVE”) and they concluded the 77’ year with this tribute to Payton and Carly Simon. Perfect! Nobody did it Better and the nicest guy around. While watching Payton every week I remember thinking how lucky are we that we have the best.
Thank you for your approval of my Payton tribute video WifiSteve! It's because of Bears fans like you that I want to create and post videos like this for all fans of the Bears and Walter! And since there was a bunch of Payton videos out there, I wanted to recreate that video I saw as an 8 year old kid myself and it stuck with me through the years. And since I didn't see the original one anywhere, I wanted to do my best to recreate that video and post it for all to who had seen it many years ago. Thanks once again!
I just heard Carly Simon singing the song in another room in our office and it brought me back to the CBS video, and your video tribute came up- thanks so much!! Like many of those commenting, I was 8 then and he was and still is my favorite player EVER. Biased, maybe- don't care. I will defend that #34 is the best player ever to anyone. I would watch the NFL Today religiously back then, eyes glued on every story. Even when the Bears stunk, which was most years in the 70's- I could always say, "Yeah, but we have Sweetness." That always quieted my buddies down. #GOAT
As a Packer fan I view the Bears as the team I want to beat the most every year. I hate the Bears but I respect them !! But I Loved Walter Payton. He is one of my all time favorite athletes of all time. This video brought a tear to my Eye. I don't care what anybody says best Running Back Ever !! Along with Jerry Rice the best Football ever !! #Sweetness34ever
I also must add … I am a Bleeding Green Eagles Fan 🦅 . All my life ( I’m 55 now ). So watching the original footage of this , was so bittersweet. I was only like 9 years old . ( maybe 10 ). It was bittersweet because I didn’t like the Bears . But all of a sudden , my so called dedication to my birds started to shift a bit . It was at that time that I started to give appreciation to the other athletes. I wasn’t afraid to wear a Payton jersey . I also wore a Tarkenton jersey . Had a Raiders varsity jacket . Oh I was all over the place haha . Still Am !! And I really sincerely believe it was because of Walter Payton and this video . I have raised my son to be the same way . Yes he loves his Philly sports teams but he is not afraid to wear some other teams jersey . We won’t wear them to the games haha - Ya got to draw the line somewhere haha . Wear what ya want . Paying tribute to the greats is not a crime . I doubt I will ever wear or own a Tom Brady Jersey …… But maybe after he retires I will . I’ll be like 70 at that point . Haha Again and again …. Excellent Video !! Made my day !!!
I remember they played this video on Thanksgiving Day in 1974 or 1975, when the Bears were playing the Lions (?) and I was watching it with my mom. Brings back a lot of memories. Walter Payton was something mighty special, players like him come along very rarely.
You were right, it clearly says 1977 season above. I remember the occasion, but got the year wrong! A senior moment, I guess. Thanks for your response and clarification, Amigo. Peace.
I just want to say that I too have been looking for this wonderful tribute to Walter Payton for many years. I was 11 years old when I saw it. I was sitting in front of the TV and right after the NFL Today Show on CBS I recall Brent Musburger going right into the tribute at the end. I was mesmerized by it and it left a lasting impression on me over the years with Carly Simon’s Nobody Does It Better. I’ve never seen a better tribute and it still brings warm memories and even a tear at times. Perhaps, being 11, catholic school, sports and friends was my life. You knew the names and stats of every player. My dad would talk about Jim Brown and Gale Sayers but Walter Payton was the greatest running back I ever saw. I’ve talked about this video for many years and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for posting it.
Thank you so much for your heartfelt response, it was really humbling for me to hear that another Walter Payton fan remembered that video from the 70's. I myself was also mesmerized by that particular video, I remember them showing Bud Grant, (Head Coach of the Vikings at that time), he was watching a play where Walter had the ball and the camera just showed his entire face and eyes and his eyes went from right to left, and then he just shook his head in amazement because apparently, Walter just made a long incredible run for a touchdown. I tried to find some Bud Grant clips that showed that same expression, but never did find any. But I tried to make it as close as I remembered from that time (I was 9 years old, 53 now), and I'm glad there are others who remembered that video that are posting comments such as yours and that helped them reminisce back to that iconic video that CBS showed on air so many years ago. Thank you once again for your kind words.
Brings a tear to my eye. Best ever. I remember him as a Viking Fan. He played in crap teams. I remember that game when he broke the single game rushing record. So good
Wow. Epic. AP was fun like that but not in the same league as WP My favorite NFL player of all time and I am a Vikes fan. Wish he was still around. Neat guy
Im from LA, so rams fan. But I do remember that day, i was 15 and that game happened to be on TV that day. That entire season was unreal, that guy would run into brick walls, collision so hard that he would bounce backwards a couple yards, but he's stay on his feet and keep going, meanwhile the guy that hit him would crumble. Amazingly vivid memories I have of him
He played at elite level for 13 years was amazing.Living in Chicagoland he was an icon like no one else.Moving to Tampa I rarely missed a Bears game when Bucs were in the North Division.Biggest reason to go was to watch Payton perform. He could have easily played longer.I was upset to hear about his condition and mortified at the idiotic reporter who asked if he was scared.
I can’t believe this is on RUclips !!!! I was just telling my friend about this …. I’m over the moon now !!! I’ll never forget watching this when I was just a lad ( age 8 or 9 ). I don’t think I’ve seen it since !!! Really taking me back to a much simpler time . Thank you so much for posting 🤠❤️🙏🎵🔪 Just subscribed!!!!!!!
I remembered that video when they ran it and I always saw Payton highlights in my mind whenever that song played -- still do to this day. Have been searching for that video, but to no avail. Thanks for making this one.
Thanks for trying to recreate Thanksgiving Day 2nd or 4th grade? When cbs did a Walter montage over halftime to this song...this little Viking girl had already converted cuz of Walter...Man ..sweet was the word..
I'm glad I saw him come to his best in 1976-80. But man , in 1977 he and the Bears were incredible against Kansas City. . The Bears were 3-5 , and than won 6 in a row. Payton was superman and Greg Latta made a miraculous touch down catch with 24 seconds left .
The best there ever was. People sometimes forget how bad the Bears were for much of Payton's football career. Other teams defensive motto was, just stop Walter, and the win is ours. And they still couldn't do it much of the time. And he was such a great person off the field too. Miss him.
By all accounts he was a wonderful human being. I believe that! So two questions popped up in my head watching for the 88th time. 1. How many teammates who got in the way said that it was the hardest hit they took all day? 2. I would love to see the opposing teams injury report from the following day and the reason. Hey Jack Tatum was a huge fan of Walter. Respect! I would be remiss if I didn't say that God blessed us with him and may God bless his family and loved ones. Perseverance..
At the time watching it, as 13 year old, I got the big tears in my eyes, slowly began to run down my cheeks. Those tears are bigger today at 60; especially with his early passing in 1999.

Yes, they replayed it cause i remember seeing it after retirement too
Ditto from another Vikes Fan
Every kid in Chicago wanted to be Walter in their backyard in the 80's. Walter is Chicago!
One of the best running backs that showed up every Sunday. Enjoyed your games Walter!

The greatest all around football player! Thank you Sweetness #34 lives on forever with the Walter Payton Award.
I remember watching the game he beat O.J.'s single game rushing record. I didn't know who he was before that game. One of those memories of me and my dad watching football. I ache for those days sometimes. I was blessed to grow up in a time of the world's greatest athletes and musicians. RIP Walter Payton.
Jim said it all. This is different kinda of animal😮😮😮😊😊😊😊
Walter Payton was such a humble man I don’t think he really realized how good he was. The best of the best.
Thanks for posting this one. There will never be another Walter Payton. The Best.
I remember that video myself Great job
Sweetness! RIP champ, you were one of a kind!
I'm Steelers fan, and Walter Payton fan too. Amazing player, RIP
The goat. We loved him. I cried when I heard he passed. Always will be my hero.
Classy video guys I'm a lifer bear fan I was 15 when sweetness was drafted what a joy to watch him run with that football.
@@alancitero9956 He was also a very good placekicker while at Jackson State in college.
The blocking and other skills in addition to rushing and receiving are what make him one of the best all around players of all time, if not the best.
ONE WORD.....GOAT !!!!!!
GREATEST OF ALL TIME
Another clue for helping unearth the original CBS video from 1977 is that around the time Walter broke the all time record, or maybe right after he retired-- Johnny Morris did a Special titled, "Run Sweet Walter" (or at least that's the name I can remember), and in that Special, they played the 1977 video tribute with Carly Simon. So, hope that helps, I wasn't able to locate the original on youtube. Maybe if anyone knows someone at WBBM Chicago, they might have easier time finding the "Run Sweet Walter" tape. Good Luck! What a hero to grow up with!
Walter Payton is the best football player he jumps over players and he died in a young age Thank you for making this from this video I learned who he was 😢
#34 Walter Payton once told me that "Sweetness is knowing God is with you always as I am."
Teary eyed everytime I see it
The good shouln't die young
Truly, the only running back who could have a three yard loss described as "brilliant."
Thank you, Sweetness.
@@alancitero9956 outstanding a true warrior thank you Mr citero job well done.
#GOAT
Greatest back of all time...
Ya hey, from south suburban Chicago. I appreciate your passion for the game up der. I drive a truck up into green bay 2x a week.
I remember seeing this on the NFL Today that year👍👍
77
Without question the best running back of all time and I'm not a bears fans I just pay homage to greatness
This man was simply the best ever!!!
You got that right
I also must add …
I am a Bleeding Green Eagles Fan 🦅 .
I doubt I will ever wear or own a Tom Brady Jersey ……
But maybe after he retires I will .
I’ll be like 70 at that point .
Haha
Again and again …. Excellent Video !!
Made my day !!!
Thank you so much!
And I never saw him play my dad tells me stories all the time of how great he was
This song sums it up about Walter Payton "Sweetness" your the Best We Love U💖 and Miss U Mr.Walter "Sweetness" Payton🏈
Awesome, I remember that original as well. You did a fantastic job recreating it. Pure and simple sweetness.
I still miss Sweetness! Walter Payton was a quality, respectful and always dependable player and person. RIP Sir!!!
What an amazing player to watch. Has the strongest legs I've ever seen! Perfect song !
I remember they played this video on Thanksgiving Day in 1974 or 1975, when the Bears were playing the Lions (?) and I was watching it with my mom. Brings back a lot of memories. Walter Payton was something mighty special, players like him come along very rarely.
My guess was Thanksgiving day 77 or 78 but I guess atleast we both got the day right. Good job!!!
You were right, it clearly says 1977 season above. I remember the occasion, but got the year wrong! A senior moment, I guess. Thanks for your response and clarification, Amigo. Peace.
@@pimpompoom93726 No problem, Peace.
No one can ever change my mind. In my lifetime, he’s the GOAT running backs.
Brings a tear to my eye. Best ever. I remember him as a Viking Fan. He played in crap teams. I remember that game when he broke the single game rushing record. So good
He was sick with the flu when he did it! Plus, he had an 80 yard run called back for holding. Otherwise, the record would have been 355 yards.
Wow. Epic. AP was fun like that but not in the same league as WP
My favorite NFL player of all time and I am a Vikes fan.
Amazingly vivid memories I have of him
I am from Glendale CA and loved those Vikes Playoff Games against the RAMS......@@jeffwatts1126
@@speedracer1984Greatest individual single game performance in the history of professional football IMO.
I too have been looking for this video for years. Thanks for posting!
R.I.P Walter!! Thank you for your outstanding contribution to the game of football as well as to your fellow man!
I remember seeing that as well and have never been able to find it, he was the best ever.
Every bit as good as I remember the original back in '77. Thank you so much for making this!
Thank you so much for posting 🤠❤️🙏🎵🔪

Walter Payton Timeless. He is in Heaven now . He will always be in our hearts forevermore.
I remembered that video when they ran it and I always saw Payton highlights in my mind whenever that song played -- still do to this day. Have been searching for that video, but to no avail. Thanks for making this one.
Amazing so many of us remember the original video. Song has never been the same. Ain't one of us have a CBS connection to get the original video?!
The best of all time #34 always will remember u and the high stepping to the endzone.
Thanks for trying to recreate Thanksgiving Day 2nd or 4th grade? When cbs did a Walter montage over halftime to this song...this little Viking girl had already converted cuz of Walter...Man
..sweet was the word..
You got that right Carly...Nobody did it better than Sweetness the greatest football player ever! RIP Sweetness thanks for the memories the thrills
Knew that was going to happen😢
What a player, what a man👍👍
I have been looking forever as well....
The best there ever was. People sometimes forget how bad the Bears were for much of Payton's football career. Other teams defensive motto was, just stop Walter, and the win is ours. And they still couldn't do it much of the time. And he was such a great person off the field too. Miss him.
Glad you got your Superbowl ring. You were one of the greatest!
And watch the cut Walter makes at 1:15 in video. It's vs Tampa Bay & a highlight clip that is normally not often seen. And should be, what a move.
The most appropriate video ever?
I remember that special very well. I think it was right around Christmas in 76
At the end of the 77 season.
Beautiful job, beautiful man...
