  • I will be living in San Antonio for a couple of months, so I am piecing quilts in my hotel room. I visited a quilt shop called Sew Special Quilts, and their website is linked below.
For the quilt pattern, see Karen at Just Get It Done Quilts for the pattern, her in depth tutorial is linked below as well.

I LOVE THIS STORE, AND AM STILL IN WITHDRAWAL FROM IT SINCE LEAVING SAT 6 years ago. It was my holy grail of quilt stores - the "go-to " place for buying fabric, notions, thread and other supplies, knowing that 95% of the time they would have anything I desired in stock, including favorite fabric designer collections..
I re-started quilting 8 years ago, after a 20 year hiatus. The staff were wonderful bringing me up to speed with industry developments and new products, and sold me my first (of now several) Bernina machines. I truly miss knowing I could go into the store and always find the collections I really wanted to purchase, including the Moda collections from top selling designers such as Bonnie and Camille/Camille Roskelly, Fig Tree Quilts, Sweetwater, etc.
You are spot on in describing them as stocking a wide selection of bright, cheery & happy fabrics (especially Most) , something I've struggled finding in Virginia and had not predicted being a problem prior to leaving TX..Not having these Moda collections in the majority of local quilt stores in Virginia, means that I need to order them online, plan much further ahead of time what quilt(s) I want to make from these, " hedge my bets" in deciding how much fabric or precuts to buy,, and having to wait before I can start sewing with them. There is so much to be said for having the instant gratification that comes with a 10 minute drive to the local store, and immediate problem solving possibility if I run out of a gently purchased fabric and need additional yardage ASAP to continue making a quilt without having to put it aside for several days waiting for an online order to ship. It also affords me the ability to optimize spending by not having to "over buy" on yardage in order to avoid the risk running out of fabric mid project and inherent hassle, time delay and increased cost of another online order.
I also LOVE that they make and sell "mini solid fabric bolts" of their most popular fabric solids (1/2, 1, 2 and higher yard cuts). This saves so much time in the store and has the added benefit not having to lug so many heavy fabric bolts to the counter for cutting.
They also have the most amazing and reasonably priced longarm quilt rental, and good machine availability and number of machines to select from. Likewise they have the best classroom I have ever been in and an amazing selection of very reasonably priced classes.
In short - I wish this store could be cloned allowing it to be present in multiple states.

Welcome to San Antonio. I love Las Colchas, Mesquite Bean, and Grome’s bc of ease for me to get there. You just encouraged me to get out to Sew Special although the construction zone is daunting.

Thank you so much for sharing this pattern. I always liked the look, but was confused by her instructions. Watching you do this helped me a lot.

My last job before retirement required a lot of travel around NYS prior to covid doing audits. My travel coworkers were all male and knew I was always looking for quilt shops for fabric and farm stores for good local food. Eating restaurant food gets boring as does off time in hotel rooms. I am an explorer and got the best tips from "locals".
I did not sew on business trips but I did bring project parts that needed ironing and squaring up or trimming or pinning while watching cable TV or listening to recorded books. Every hotel room had an ironing board and iron or I requested one.
I found a craft resale store in Ithaca NY that sold or gave away donated fabric, notions, and lots of crafting supplies. And NYS has many Amish/Mennonite communities have fabric and package stores that had the best homemade food offerings. Since we traveled by car, I always brought an extra totebag for items to add to stash.
I like the way you folded the quilt. Beautiful quilt top.

Thanks! That's a great idea to bring projects for squaring up and ironing. I did bring my own iron in case the hotel one wasn't up to my standard but it is actually a great one!

Great progress on the space. At least we know you use a good swivel chair. It can be a tough experience on the lower back if you sew in a straight back rigid chair. What sewing machine are you looking at? My favorite is a older Singer 301 or 401. Stitches like a dream unless that automatic needle down is really important to you.

Never quilted while traveling, but most of my trips are family. We do stop at fabric and antique stores to visit with locals and get food recommendations.

Yes...on Ski Trips with the hubs, as I don't ski... Road Trip type, so easy to schlep supplies along! The looks I got in the Lobby though, when everyone was walking in with snowboards, skiis, poles...and here is me, with a luggage trolley full of sewing machine, ironing boards, irons, fabric, mats, rulers! Lol!

@DH-qz2so hahaha I understand. Room service stopped by this morning and if I didn't desperately need more coffee I would have put up the 'do not disturb' sign. I'm fairly certain she thought I was tearing something apart 😅 she even pushed the door open to get a better look!!! 😂😂😂

How do I handle all the duplicates in my jelly roll? Did you have the same problem?

    • @kayla_quilts
      @kayla_quilts  3 месяца назад

@StephenTurner-q5z I try to buy jelly rolls (or any pre-cut) without too many duplicates, the last time I had too many of tge same fabric I used it to make an Irish chain.

That's the first time I've been asked about Maryland! I am from the Appalachian Foothills of SE Ohio. Everyone points out my accent, but I just don't hear it. Maybe that's because everyone I am around talks the same way... 😅
