BTW, what has surprised me most this year, is how little you have to actually come around the ball (when you throw it correctly) to get it to hook. The ball itself will do a LOT of the work for you. A lot of people like JR remind us to "let the ball do the work", and they aren't wrong! .. as I am getting better with my release, I have more of a problem with getting too much hook than I do not enough. And as my rev rate gets higher and higher, I find how important it is to get your "elbow in" and "hand inside of the ball" .. also, JR didn't note it here, but if you look at the very bottom of his release, I am betting you $100 right now that his index finger is pointed directly down at the floor, allowing him to get maximum rev rate and still properly control the axis rotation. Excellent stuff here .. give a big shout out to JR and Cody for illustrating this .. super important part of the swing/release !!!
My biggest thing is letting the ball let go of me, not me letting go of the ball. Letting the ball fall not pulling it. I haven't been bowling that long maybe with in the last year in a half 2 years
I used to have a hard time not doing this. Worked with JR and he gave me a lot of ideas to try to stop doing this. It was a little more work since Im a one hand no thumb bowler but he helped me change my set up to allow me to stay behind the ball more. I now have a lot more consistent revs and more consistent shot making.
What fixed it for me was remembering to drop my ball-side shoulder to create a swing slot and getting my elbow off my rib cage. I'd been unconsciously propping it there, which was putting the ball too far in front of my body. Once I moved my elbow to rest against my side, I had a much easier time keeping my elbow in and my hand behind the ball because I was no longer swinging the ball around my body.
I really focused on this last week during league and the difference in the rotation was significant and actually saw an increase in "hook" because of how the shape changed. I had been much better about this before but got lazy lately knew something was off based on how my carry had gone to crap. I don't get a chance to go practice these days, but I don't mind sacrificing my league scores a bit to improve my long term game.
Great info, thanks. Would love to see a video on how the pros use their release to give a ball more rotation when they need it without chicken winging.
Thanks JR, due to your video's I finally figured out how to eliminate the, "Dreaded Chicken Wing" My ball reaction is so much better, my adjustments on the lanes are much more minimal. My track flare has raised and my PAP has changed. I'm a 175-180 bowler and lately I've had some pretty good series in league. I got a great deal on a Storm Code Black, put a little 2000 surface on it and it's golden! First night 697 series, 279, 229, 199. 16 strikes in a row! Of course now opponents are calling me a sandbagger.
Once a week I practice 5 games. 4 games is nothing but these drills and trying to create consistency. Last game I put it all together. I do get silly looks sometimes but these drill definitely help during league night. 👌🏽
I find it interesting that the "chicken wing" problem is the same in golf (something I actually know about). Common problem with these sports. EXCELLENT tips and instruction guys! .. thank you very much! .. I have been working on the "elbow in", "hand inside of the ball" a lot lately .. Friday I had my 2 highest games ever .. 265 and 268 .. love this stuff!
What amazed me when i learned how to do this is i DON’T rotate at all. My wrist has a natural rotation on its own and i don’t need to do anything but roll the ball with a cupped wrist. It feels like i am just coming up the back of the ball with no rotation, but when i look at myself on recording, it looks like i rotate the ball about 20-30%
The humor of the script really illustrates the gaps in communication and understanding that occurs between bowlers asking for help and bowlers/coaches offering help. The simplification of the 1 step was well done. I anticipate a lot of "a-ha!" Moments in peoples brains watching this. I also anticipate extra views after your pot stirring. Half the people who watch to try to tell you that you are wrong for some reason just won't have it left in them anymore after learning something and having a laugh.
Thank you guys. This was one of the funniest videos I've seen so far . JR you were great. Chicken wing is a problem I'm guilty of it definitely takes time to get rid of.
Keep practicing, I was thw same way. What really helped me was pointer finger push into the ball on down swing. Do one steps and then ring finger you are pulling up on the ball to the sky. It was frustrating it drove me nuts. I'm getting it now. Slowing down my steps and working on one thing at a time. I was trying to do all things at once. You will get there. Also. Use your couch. I practice on throwing on it everyday. Buy and old ball and use in your yard.
Ive been hand painting heavy oil on at my home house for the last 2 days to get ready for Missouri Masters and some regionals for the summer/fall And plan to do a more proper no step as ive been getting around the ball more than releasing through the ball, letting the thumb hole tip after the thumb comes out (an effect of clocking the fingers for an up the back release) So repeating shots has been difficult, as well as making small adjustments once in the right zone. This is because my elbow hasnt been repeating and i have been practicing at too high of a pace.
As a beginner bowler, I am trying to break myself from doing this exact same thing. Will use this drill next time I am at the lanes. Thank you for these types of videos!!
My wife and i went bowling last weekend. She was getting angry with the way sh was releasing the ball this video would help with that.thank for the help❤
I’ve started to do these drills for the past month or so, and while I can do the no-step and one-step drills well, I can’t seem to get my hand under/at the equator when I try to put it all together. Any tips to better create that “flat spot”?
Thanks for the great tips! I do have one question. How many times should a person, who really needs to fix this, actually perform these drills? Obviously, JR was just showing them to us and doesn't need them for himself.
I need a coach like him.. lolI watched Danielle's page and she used a hand towel or ball towel between her arm and body and of course, it will drop at some point. But i guess you try to keep it there as long as youncan to help keep your arm in.
I bowled in a league two years about 35 years ago and then had to stop due to injury. This year I started to bowl again and I’m getting a few lessons from a PBA member who is local. I wanted to just work on my swing and release, but he is more concerned about teaching approach and body positioning, saying that it’s easy to fix the swing and release later. At 68 years old, I’m not sure I agree with his thinking, as my back injuries may not allow me to adjust my approach and body posture to match his ideal position, but I do think that I could improve my swing and release technique. What’s your opinion on my situation?
Im flat handed behind the ball and my balls seem to go into a forward roll way early. Or my balll finally getting a little rotation the ball will go right soemtimes too much and wont come back in it will hit the damn 3 pin.
What about a closed shoulder? When i do no step and one step im there under the ball and behind the ball. but as soon as i go full approach, my shoulder closes, my arm seems to roll.
Ditto.. in my head I see myself looking like kelly kulick then I record and 😢. By the looks of me half the time you woukd think how she even get over 50. Pol

Your videos are so much more enjoyable when Cody joins you. You two make a good team.
Is that a compliment? Lol
@@elliyas9999 Cody is a compliment

Cody could have asked "what kind of sauce do you want with those wings"? 🤣 Good vid, guys!👍

Best video so far. Funny, informative, short and sweet. 👍👍

No script, just “wing” it here. 😂
Thank you guys. This was one of the funniest videos I've seen so far . JR you were great. Chicken wing is a problem I'm guilty of it definitely takes time to get rid of.
I have the opposite problem. Stay behind and never rotate. Just rolls fwd and barely moves. Almost wish this side rotation was still my problem.

You guys are fun to watch acting like little clowns but your message is crystal clear and so valuable. Thank you JR and Cody. Great vlog!
Love this video.. I feel more bowlers can relate to content in this fun form

Push in with your pointer finger. It helped me I was flat handed up the back. On or top of it it would roll end over end no hook.
nicely done!!!

"I watch all the amateurs do it"😂
Jr. How would you deal with wet dry patterns? My league puts out a pattern thats really dry compared to the house shot outside of the 3rd arrow.

Alright peeps. 100k subscribers like yesterday!!!

I prefer a turkey over a chicken.
Okay Daddy..
Drill it pin down and it takes away the chicken wing
I might unsubscribe if JR will have hair. No no no!! “Wags” finger
I get tired and listening to Andy Griffith talking to Bonnie fives to tell me how to bow once again another year of dummy.
Huh?
Are you speaking English?
