Hi everyone. I am practicing an individual approach to every student. I want everyone to understand what exactly is needed to improve his or her game. Depending on a student’s knowledge and background I will explain in some different ways because I want them to understand in details what and why.

Finally, a pro is talking about what really happens, not saying just get your hand behind the ball. There is no tip or video I can't stand more than telling an amateur to get their hand behind the ball; it helps no one. This is the information people need to understand for more revs and better release. You just helped so many people finally understand how to throw like a pro, and I salute you for it.
Its really hard though too. There is SO much happening than just throwing a ball right and hitting the pocket. My coach slammed so much at my face but I took it head on. Trying to tell an amateur all the little things you need to know about throwing a bowling ball can be very overwhelming
@@rockersheart Absolutely Rocker, You can't just pick up a ball and do what Tang does by watching this video but in order to improve your game you need to start with the right information, and with enough practice you can really improve. Im a 210 average (house pattern) just a league bowler and always will be but im always looking to improve and years ago I was looking for information on how to throw like the pros / get more revs and every video was get your hand behind the ball, was super frustrated because as I said that helps no one, I found a Japanese video that finally made what im supposed to be doing easy to understand and practice. I couldn't find one video in English talking about it. ruclips.net/video/n_YeYjbyJu8/видео.html this was this video I found years ago, maybe more people are talking about it today, but when I was looking to learn and get better this was the only video in the world that I could find that actually covered whats really happening, once I saw this my game changed forever for the better. its like bowling's best kept secret lol. Thanks for sharing the Japanese video. Made it even clearer than this video. I've recently realized my hand has been coming out of the side of the ball forever....had no idea it was that bad until I saw a video. Hopefully these tips will get me on the right track. So much information out there and as you've said, a lot of it is just "stay behind the ball".
I think the worst part of "just stay behind it" is without proper body alignment, you can try all you want but your hand will still end up in the wrong spot if other things aren't sorted out first. There are a lot of causes and effects going on to try and simplify it that much. Like yeah, that's obviously the end goal, but it's much more complicated than that, especially to newer players.
Alex Gurkov was my coach in college for a year. Even though I was with him for 3 months, he improved my rev rate and bowling IQ tremendously. While also pointing out key elements I should focus on to keep my physical game consistent. Thank you Alex 🙌🏼
I absolutely LOVE it when I see idols of mine, like DTang, getting lessons from others. It just PROVES how good they really are! .. The best in the world continue to get lessons and coaching from others, always. Just look at the greatest golfer of all time, Tiger Woods. He had a swing coach his entire career. Never too proud to continue to get training from others. The greatest percussionist to have ever lived, Neil Peart, got drumming lessons all through his career to his last days. I just have so much respect for such people. The truly greatest at performing such arts (sports, music, etc) ALWAYS strive to improve by seeking knowledge from others, that's why they become the GREATEST at their endeavors. Darren is so super talented, and I LOVE the fact that he is getting additional training like this. It just proves to me that Darren is striving to get better and better. I've been watching bowling content on RUclips for like 10 years probably - this is the best video I've ever seen. Super informative and actually well explained, unlike a lot of coaching videos. Would love to have a lesson or two with Coach Gurkov; I definitely learned a few things I'll be trying next time I'm practicing.

This is one of the best examples of a great teacher I’ve ever seen. Just watching this from my couch, I’m sitting here thinking to myself, “wow, that seems so simple and makes so much sense.” This is the mark of a great teacher.
Coach Alex is awesome! I was fortunate to get a lesson with him at Kegel in August and he helped me get rid of tightness and increased the consistency of my entry angle/axis rotation simply by having my body lean forward. My other coaches didn't know how to get around my problem, but Coach Alex did. He explains concepts in a way that is easy for me to understand. It made a huge difference to my game that I needed like a year ago. He is just fantastic.
What a video...What a couching...thank you Darren, this is an absolute blessing for global bowling community... Dude, there are 100 so called pro players in my country, all of us learning from youtube...You exposed your issues worldwide and it so motivating to know that you are not a machine we thought you are, and that all bowlers have same thoughts and bad habits to fix...
This is a masterclass in being coachable. Asking confirming questions and making sure you understand the coach is so important. The coach knows what they want to see and seeing Darren understand it and execute on it is what makes him a pro!
Love this. I've been working on these two styles of cupping over the last few months. Started with what he said was style 2, but I found I wasn't able to get my wrist uncupped fast enough at the bottom, so it introduced some loft into my game. So I switched to style 1, cupping the ball at the top of my backswing when the ball is essentially weightless. It felt much more relaxed to me and gave my wrist enough time to uncup at the bottom, which allowed me to lay the ball down better. I'm sure if I were to work on style 2, I could get even more revs on the ball, but I'm sitting at a pretty high rev rate right now with style 1, so I'll stick with that. Absolutely awesome video!
@@stevekeller3643 It's actually a lot simpler than you think, if you've already got a great hand position (inside to back of bowling ball). You cup it at the top of the backswing because in a matter of speaking the ball is weightless at that point of the swing. So it takes very little effort to move your hand into a cupped position at that moment. But if you aren't confident that you can do it right away, using a lighter ball is definitely the way to go. Easier to grip. Hope this helps, my dude.
This guy reminds me of my drum teacher from back in the day. I was a young buck playing every gig with just sheer power; hammering away with no mechanics which lead to some injuries (tendonitis, sprains, etc). I told him I wanted to play every gig like Neil Peart with his finesse and dynamics. The lessons were so similar to this video: details, mechanics, feel, and ergonomics. I wouldn't be the drummer that I am today if it weren't for him. I'm gonna apply this same principles to my bowling. Great post, Darren!
First, great explanation and fully understandable. I practiced both styles and figured cupping style 1 was for me. I avg 190-200. Shot 712 in league. Only done this in league once in 40 years. It works and easy to do theoretically, still will need a ton of repetition to pause at top and not pull down. Thank you so much for sharing, this will change my game to the next level that I've been wanting for the last 5 years.
So good. I find it amazing that he is able to accurately deconstruct such detail. I have been working on a lot of this over the last several months and this clarifies things so incredibly well. Saw this vid today along the way to work, like all the others commented, this is the tips that all new bowlers needed. I straight away went to the nearby bowling alley after work and tried it, it wasnt perfect of course but totally improved my game and helped me with the over tension on my shoulders! thank you so much for the vid. keep it up darren, wishing to see you to be on one of the televised stepladders in the tours!

I would like to thank you for posting this. I’ve been having a few rough seasons and have struggled to get out of my slump. I was starting to think I was just not good enough anymore. I tried some of the techniques today and shot my first 700 in nearly two and a half years! Thank you again!
This is so great I need to watch this 20 times. All my life I couldn't figure out how to have a loose arm swing AND have a strong release. More cupping always gave me more muscle in my swing. Now I have the answer to the problem. Maybe I can get that rev rate over 325.
The most prevalent example of this style release i see on tour today is Mitch Hupé. His swing looks so relaxed & appears it wouldnt generate 200 rpm but he has an absolutley sick rev rate.
I connected when Darren mentioned his elbow issue then Alex mentioned something that We all know and that is to let the ball do the work as opposed to putting muscle in the delivery🤠

I am new to bowling. I just started using the cupping technique. I was watching some guys and noticed they would cup their wrist as they started their downswing. My rav rate and speed increased, now I need to learn how to read the lanes more consistently.
Efficiency of motion.This coach knows his stuff and explains it very well even though English is obviously not his first language. One of the best I've ever seen at his first style was the king of swing, Mike Fagan. So smooth and efficient. Anyone who says bowling is not a feel sport is dead wrong. His explanation of the tilt near the end regarding both styles makes total sense. Thinking of this as a two hander, it makes sense now why most two handers have very low tilt or even negative tilt.
Some really great work here. Being able to integrate this level of coaching speaks to how much you care as an athlete. Interesting and fun to watch. More of this please!
This was the first guy I've ever heard talk about grip pressure this way and how it is a good thing. I have weak wrists because I'm a small guy so this will be very helpful to learn how to grip properly to use the muscles correctly

Whatever we do before the release doesn't affect the ball or the release - so, logically, we should do what we can to make it SIMPLER so it is more repeatable, and RELAXED so we use less energy when it doesn't matter. The full cup through the whole release is still a good practice for beginners and some folks will just be more comfortable with it and not like the other releases - the full cup release is simpler (see above) and easier to repeat. For myself, back when I was bowling, I had the full cup and, as I liked to crank (grew up with white and yellow dots) developed a natural stage 2. In my experience, the coach is 100% correct - full cup if you're looking to control angles more, stage 2 when the lanes open up. Always admired Michael Fagan's release - when he finally cups and releases, looks like he's throwing a yo-yo. Very relaxed, until he gives it the business.
This is exactly how I bowl. I knew immediately when the guy was showing to shake/flop your wrist, and shoulders that he was going to help you. You can not use muscle to manipulate the ball and stay consistent enough to rev it and hit your mark. I was a scratch golfer when I played and this is true in a golf swing as well. You have to stay loose and not use muscle. Tension in your muscles restricts the swing and revs in bowling, and swing speed/rotation in golf.

I’m only a few minutes in, but this is the best video for bowling education I have ever seen. Well done. I want to go do these now and learn to relax my wrist/cup/hand. Amazing video.
My son used to tell me to stop muscling the ball and I would argue Im not and now as we watch this video he said I was doing exactly the same thing. Pausing on my back swing and cupping the ball all the way to my release! I feel so much smoother using my fingers and thumb instead of gripping and cupping the ball. My average went up by 40 points and my speed went from 12.5-13 to a consistent 13.5-14mph. It is also helping improve my spares!
I just started doing that grip style 1 a few months ago. I was doing it for a different reason though; I'm not the strongest person in the world, so I struggled getting under it at release. Using that moment of weightlessness to get my hand behind it was a huge realization for me. Glad others are also using that same technique; it makes a ton of sense from a physics perspective.
Darren, I can't wait to see you have more options during TV season! There's so much room for competitive bowling, and YES it's a better experience for fans like me, who can't get out and do it as much as I used to.
Aight, I've always used a support to bowl but a few weeks ago I decided to go without it and try to actually bowl with the "yoyo" style and asked one of my teammates to teach me, this coach that helped you actually helped me with the "squeeze" technique he showed u, I finally feel my thumb leave the ball and my fingers stay in it 8/10 times instead of 1/10 times
My thing was very similar, trying to stay under the ball and cupped the entire swing. Very inconsistent release. I'm going to try the change on my next practice session.
I use the last 2 methods and love them. My biggest issue is ball speed, i am now so rev dominant that hitting on the right side of the pocket is difficult
Been doing #1 for a long time without ever seeing it explained so this was pretty cool. I have an elbow bend back there too. However, it does lower my ball speed. It didn’t used to but something has been off that I can’t put my finger on
Any time I try cupping style #2, I get hung up in the ball because I can never get the timing right. I just can't do that quick wrist snap when it has to happen. I'm getting pretty proficient with style 1, though. As long as I feel the cup at the top of my swing, I can hold it pretty consistently and release it on time.
DT, I bowled the Jim Kent Memorial pro-am and I asked you about a hockey stick shaped ball. You told me about a new release that was clean and somewhat angular. The only thing you could tell me about it is that it has blue in it The problem is all 3 releases from SPI have blue in them and they all look clean through the front. Now that there is an official release can you tell me which one you were talking about? Thanks, Sam
I saw it as a reverse basketball shot. I just forget to do it on the lanes. lol. I just maintain a cup until my targeting gets better. Then I work on the extra flip of my wrist.
Cupping does create tension, my hip flexor agrees. I needed this advice as well. 15 lbs swinging from one side of your body can do something to you after awhile, who would have thought?

A good coach is not simply one having knowledge but being able to explain it in a way that others can easily understand.

So, I took some points from this video, definitely noticed a difference in rev rate and pin carry. Shot my 7th 300 tonight and 831 to go with it.

His explanation of the tilt near the end regarding both styles makes total sense. Thinking of this as a two hander, it makes sense now why most two handers have very low tilt or even negative tilt.
I really like how much softer and through the ball Darren looked at the release for a lot of the video. Visually it looked great.

This was the first guy I've ever heard talk about grip pressure this way and how it is a good thing. I have weak wrists because I'm a small guy so this will be very helpful to learn how to grip properly to use the muscles correctly

Whatever we do before the release doesn't affect the ball or the release - so, logically, we should do what we can to make it SIMPLER so it is more repeatable, and RELAXED so we use less energy when it doesn't matter.
The full cup through the whole release is still a good practice for beginners and some folks will just be more comfortable with it and not like the other releases - the full cup release is simpler (see above) and easier to repeat. For myself, back when I was bowling, I had the full cup and, as I liked to crank (grew up with white and yellow dots) developed a natural stage 2. In my experience, the coach is 100% correct - full cup if you're looking to control angles more, stage 2 when the lanes open up.
Always admired Michael Fagan's release - when he finally cups and releases, looks like he's throwing a yo-yo. Very relaxed, until he gives it the business.
This is exactly how I bowl. I knew immediately when the guy was showing to shake/flop your wrist, and shoulders that he was going to help you. You can not use muscle to manipulate the ball and stay consistent enough to rev it and hit your mark. I was a scratch golfer when I played and this is true in a golf swing as well. You have to stay loose and not use muscle. Tension in your muscles restricts the swing and revs in bowling, and swing speed/rotation in golf.

My son used to tell me to stop muscling the ball and I would argue Im not and now as we watch this video he said I was doing exactly the same thing. Pausing on my back swing and cupping the ball all the way to my release! I feel so much smoother using my fingers and thumb instead of gripping and cupping the ball. My average went up by 40 points and my speed went from 12.5-13 to a consistent 13.5-14mph.
It is also helping improve my spares!
What did he mean, use your fingers and your thumb ? Meaning to cup during the swing as opposed to at address ?

I just started doing that grip style 1 a few months ago. I was doing it for a different reason though; I'm not the strongest person in the world, so I struggled getting under it at release. Using that moment of weightlessness to get my hand behind it was a huge realization for me. Glad others are also using that same technique; it makes a ton of sense from a physics perspective.

Aight, I've always used a support to bowl but a few weeks ago I decided to go without it and try to actually bowl with the "yoyo" style and asked one of my teammates to teach me, this coach that helped you actually helped me with the "squeeze" technique he showed u, I finally feel my thumb leave the ball and my fingers stay in it 8/10 times instead of 1/10 times

My thing was very similar, trying to stay under the ball and cupped the entire swing. Very inconsistent release. I'm going to try the change on my next practice session.
I use the last 2 methods and love them. My biggest issue is ball speed, i am now so rev dominant that hitting on the right side of the pocket is difficult

Been doing #1 for a long time without ever seeing it explained so this was pretty cool. I have an elbow bend back there too. However, it does lower my ball speed. It didn’t used to but something has been off that I can’t put my finger on

Any time I try cupping style #2, I get hung up in the ball because I can never get the timing right. I just can't do that quick wrist snap when it has to happen. I'm getting pretty proficient with style 1, though. As long as I feel the cup at the top of my swing, I can hold it pretty consistently and release it on time.

The 2nd style of cupping looks more smooth, quick, and more speed to me. I guess it's because the 1st style does have a later timing and lower tilt.

DT, I bowled the Jim Kent Memorial pro-am and I asked you about a hockey stick shaped ball. You told me about a new release that was clean and somewhat angular. The only thing you could tell me about it is that it has blue in it The problem is all 3 releases from SPI have blue in them and they all look clean through the front. Now that there is an official release can you tell me which one you were talking about?

I saw it as a reverse basketball shot. I just forget to do it on the lanes. lol. I just maintain a cup until my targeting gets better. Then I work on the extra flip of my wrist.

Cupping does create tension, my hip flexor agrees. I needed this advice as well. 15 lbs swinging from one side of your body can do something to you after awhile, who would have thought?
