So much stuff in that building that normally gets lost or thrown out, how many people have seen something on them shelfves that they need.
What you got your eye on Furze?
That extra space next to where the Delorean is going to live would make a great project car space!!!!....Imagine the reveal when its complete too rising up from underground!
I think your right, non petrol heads would just bin it all…
Personally I love the posters…
My father passed away over two years ago and having to go through his extensive collection of tools, parts and collectibles was so daunting, and it was only a small percentage the size of this VW hoard (I don't mean hoard in a negative way, more like a dragon's hoard, haha). Hats off to the grandson for making sure the usable parts and cars go to good homes and not crushed for thrown out.
Same here, its difficult and if like me you know some of the stories behind the stuff then its like a trip back in time, a little story. Clearing stuff out picking up a set of mk1 fiesta pepperpots and knowing it came off a neighbours rolled car 30 years ago
Passing them onto new owners sometimes makes the process satisfying. Sorting through a loved ones items is never simple.
@@TheLateBrakeShowcathartic. Great eps thnx
loved this episode, I'm not a vw fan but it was such a captivating episode .
This show is often more effective than Big pharma's anti-depressants...( you know, those pssin useless selective serotonin reuptake-inhibitors)
The story of one mans life in kit form. It's great watching his grandson putting all the pieces together for us. Brilliant episode
Bless Dan for going above and beyond for his late grandparents. Nothing binned without really checking first.
I bet the old boy has got a shed full of tiger tokens and Esso glasses. 😂
if you had pulled the plug lead off the affected cylinder, it would of started [on 3], as it is the pulse running back up the inlet manifold that buggers the job up...
just lost my dad 3wks ago, got 65yrs of house + 2 double garages of collecting to go through, wish me luck... keep it up young man
Invite them up to go through it with you make another great show love the back story
Love the journey on these barn finds whether the vehicle fires or not, it’s the storytelling around it how they got here, and this one had so much supporting material thanks to the grandpa’s archive of parts and merch. Awesome stuff as always Jonny, but it think this may just be your best one yet
31:33 That configurator is maybe my favourite thing from the whole video. I love all the old promo material and random bits of VW memorabilia.
This episode is what really make Barn Find even more special to watch, Thank you Jonny and Co. The back story is always so interesting.
Thank you so much for watching. Glad you enjoyed the backstory
I could not agree more - a riveting watch start to finish.
I think it speaks volumes for the amount of love Dan must feel for his late grandparents... taking up the responsibility to sort things out...
Amd ofcourse Jonny being brilliant as always!
The best motoring programme in many years. Congratulations Johnny and team.
Many thanks!
Absolutely best episode I’ve seen! I’m a Ford man but had an 82 vw I bought for £50 which my son put 40000 + miles on in only a few years! It’s like an English version of American pickers.. without the picking if you get what I mean. Testament to the dealership and the lad’s grandad! Love this stuff ❤
This was magnificent and a huge high-five for the editing. Intercutting the old films of the dealership and family, the family photos and the main barn find was lovely and gave the whole project real heart - even more than usual. Brilliant work by all :)
There's an old boy I see regularly drive down my street in an early aircooled T25 single cab bright orange and rust spots 😅 makes me smile every time.
Really nice vid, long day that and you must have been gutted she wouldn't run, maybe it was struggling and the 2.0 engine was onboard ready to go but the swap never happened. What a lot of memories and stuff attached to owning a dealership! Thanks for the glimpse into the lives of these guys👌👍
I’m really glad I went to the comment section when they were struggling to start the van…… 🙃
Brilliant episode Jonny, loved it. Dad was a serial Beetle owner in the 60s and 70s(and I still want one). He used to take his 1300 for a service at Renwicks (Plymouth) who were a main VW dealer and I used to lovee going there and looking at all the new cars coming in (the Type 3 Variant was a favourite) and when the 412 Variant came out I thought it was the bee's knees. I've ranted on a bit too much but before I STFU it's not just the cars but the stuff (parts, brochures etc.) that make the place a true treasure trove for any VW nut - I bet your mate Tim was having a right old rummage while he was there.
Videos of this kind are the best.
I wonder how many old vehicles are left, still to be discovered around the country. Good work Sir 👍
It shocks us on a weekly basis how many cars are still languishing in secret in the UK alone. It's exciting.
My father had a Helios metallic blue 411-LE on an N registration. Incredible car! 120 MPH on the Speedo and a back parcel shelf that I used to sleep in on long journeys.
Holy crap! That cherub peeing in a pot thing .... we had one on the loo door in the house I grew up in from the mid 80s up until the late 90s. I've never seen another one until now.
Is Dan Selling any of those posters? The one you started to unroll @32.52 I was given to me by my father (a VW workshop Forman at the time) I also had the Herbie cut out car! Wow the memories came flooding back! 😍😍😍 GREAT EPISODE!
An 8 track in a VW bug you must have been posh. My friends and myself had VWs all at the same time various types over the years. Brings back so many memory's. Great video 2x👍
the olfactory hyperphantasia is strong with this one , grew up on the smell of old vw's , uncles had type 1,2,3 AND 4 at one point in my preteens , lovely.
Olfactory hyperphantasia! I know what you mean. I can still smell the leather that was in my grandfather’s Austin Cambridge…
What a gold mine of cool stuff..!! Brings me back to my childhood and teen years. My dad was into VW and had a type 2 1973 buss which he and my uncle Börje did a Porsche engine swap one Saturday afternoon. Brilliant episode, made me happy, made me smile!
Best episode yet. As a VAG family (my late father had a Type 3 Fastback, Golfs 1 to 4, Polo breadvans and a Touran I have inherited + my current Golf 1, Polo 6R & a B5 RS4), absolutely fascinating especially the period advertising. My Grandad had a 411 with petrol heater and a 76 Golf 1). Hats off to the grandsons for respectfully going through everything. Be great to see the Bay window and 412 restored. The 60s photo looked like there was Watercooled VW (Golf 1) out front (?).
Thanks for an incredible video Johnny, much needed sanity whilst I found a quiet place in Disneyworld with a cold beer under the guise of looking after my youngest whilst he sleeps 🤫
😉
This is amazing. Ive got to say you’re channel is one of my favourites on RUclips and one of the few car RUclipsrs who doesn’t think he is more of a star than the car. Thanks for making such great content.
This reminds me of my days in the '83- '99 era covering backs roads and Country Towns of Australia's east coast and central Victoria finding old Ovals ( '53, '54, '55,, '56, '57 ) Type 2 Kombies ( '60 &'63 23Window, '62 Pickup with 55,00 miles etc ) Karmann Ghias including a '58, '53 Beetle Kabrio LHD brought to Oz in the early '60s, '64 Notch with 48,000 miles, the only surviving PROCTOR Coupe ('57) and so on. Thx Jonny
Remember the dealership very well whilst working in Darlaston, Walsall in the mid 70’s. proper no frills dealership of the time. Fond memories as a Beatle owner and it being my first car. Great episode.
What an interesting story and look around. Never seen a Type 4 before and wasn’t aware of them. Their grandfather seemed to be an amazing fellow. Great story beautifully put together.
Thank you. The Type 4 was supposed to be the ultimate luxury and tech iteration of aircooled Volkswagens. Sadly by this point the world was moving on, and Audi + water-cooled Golfs/Passats had arrived.
I am in Germany and I have never seen or heard of the Type 4.. wikipedia says only 0,06 % of them survived (so about 222 in Germany) - that is crazy
What a lovely episode. Lovely family history and multiple key moments in the history of car trade in this country. I bet there are so many things packed away there that probably only exist there now. Thanks to the family for sharing ❤
Exceptional 'Barn Find' video and backstory!
I absolutely love this video. I had beetles for my first 3 cars from 1988.
On type 4s, my first job in 1984 (age 14) was at a dairy. the farmer picked gave me a lift home once in his green 412 variant (estate). It's the only one i've ever seen and i've seen a lot of 1970s vdubs.
Thanks again Jonny, camera msn and Tim.
I had a 412LE Variant as my first car in 1983. Superb car apart from the brakes, which were largely psychological. I don't think anything before or since has had such load carrying capacity. It even had a supplementary petrol heater that used 1 pint an hour and kept you warm even if the engine wasn't running. A most unusual first car but I loved it.
im pretty sure my 67 1500 was sold at this dealership as it is from the wolverhampton area
As a major VW nut throughout the late eighties, 90s and beyond, this brought back so many memories. I even recognised a lot of the memorabilia (the posters, etc)! I would say that with the van firing, it's a victory of sorts. I SO enjoyed this one, Jonny and team - and am fascinated to see when the truck eventually gets restored and back on the road. A really wonderful barn find episode!
Love the family story behind this barnfind. VW's hold a special place in my heart as my dad used to be a panel beater for a VW garage and growing up there has almost always been a Volkswagen on his drive. MK1 Golf, B2 Passat estate (I still want one of my own), various MK2 Polos, a Falicia (still VAG), a Lupo, Golf MK4 and currently a MK5 Golf. Never quite back to the aircooled but I have always appreciated them. I caught his bug for motorbikes too so no VW on my drive currently but when finances allow I hope to correct that.,
I really enjoyed that it was one of them videos I didn't want to end thanks Jonny for taking us all along with you
What an incredible story its amazing they are still going through his stuff! Brought back fond memories of me rummaging through the stores at my family dealership, which was Jaguar, BL, Peugeot, and later on Ford, sadly now long gone.
Very inspirational story! Many thanks to everyone involved for sharing🙏👏⭐
You can hear the memories flooding back when he talks about his grandad. He's there doing everything he remembers. Great video. 👍👍
Absolutely- and it’s what makes it such good viewing - it’s so natural etc
Brilliant. Reminds me of an old car spares shop, I used to work in back in the day. Literally it was like jumble sale but we knew where everything was.
As an aircooled vdub guy, this was a great one.
Great episode, so much family history there - thanks for sharing all
Can't stop smiling while watching this wonderful episode
🥃👌🏾
My dad also had a t2 van as his first car in New Zealand. Im going to get a beetle for my first car next year
Go for it! My 1st was a red 1963 beetle…it was 12 yrs old when I bought it for $300. I loved it!
@@DebNewton-kh4cv Wow that was cheap. In finland where I live I need to pay ~5000€ for a farely good one but im willing to pay that since they are going up in price all the time.
Ohhh so much looking forward to watch this right now.
It is always zo peacefully and perfect before going to sleep.
Thanks and cheers from Belgium 🇧🇪
Amazing as always! Top quality!
Bloody love your show Jonny! THE best auto show out there by a stretch. Please don’t stop
What an amazing collection xx the posters and paperwork 😮😮 so cool
Jonny Smith, undisputed king of the barn finds. Great episode.
Fair play lads. Great video and great respect to the grandparents. Seem like really genuine people ans such great memories you shared. Seeing the home videos is very special.
Oh and the car memories are great too. ❤
Great video and thanks for adding a clip of our oval. Their looks to be lots of great usable parts and I’m sure the van will run 🤙🏼 also what a great story
Fascinating episode and a wealth of interest!!!!
Great episode thanks to all involved
Really enjoyed this episode Jonny 👍 the story that the grandson told with such memories of his muchloved grandad was so heartwarming
I loved this videos. For many, cars are just a lump of metal. Every car has a story to tell and it was once part of someone’s life in good and bad moments. This collection is amazing and it’s great to see that his grandson is looking after it and passing on to good homes.
What a fantastic place, so full of history and some fascinating old items. Great stuff Jonny!
🤘🏽
Jem VW is such a blast from the past!! I used to go there for MK1 Golf bits years ago. Great place local to me. Loved hearing the story. Brilliant!!!!
Fantastic video as always. My favourite part was you turning up in your old beetle. Lovely!
What a family and what a amazing story! Love the cars. My Dad rebuilt Rileys and Prefects for his collection/business. Still has two of them.
Love your videos , being a Vw Fanboy myself this was an awsome episode, Ive lost count on how many vws i have owned since i was 18 lol , I can imagine its like a kid in a candy shop seeing all the cool vw parts etc he had kept over the years, I myself currently have a 68 dune buggy , 85 mk1 Cabriolet , 99 New beetle, and my two pride and joys a 75 T2 Westfalia camper, and a 72 Type 4 411 its sad the type 4s never really caught on from 1968-1974 , there is a small following for these cars though . Here in the US market we only got the 411s for 1971/72 model year and the 412s for 1973/74. My 411 needs some mechanical work but body wise is in good condition with some slight surface rust around the edges .
Great to see these cars are still out there looked like I reamber scrap yards being as a kid I reamber to bays piled on top of each other next to a three door MK2 escort once and they were crushed mad when you think about it now good job as always love the barn finds
I'm in the process of rebuilding my 75 double cab bay window. they are great vehicles and more practical than people would think. I have the same factory 2ltr type 4 engine and 5 rib box that this guys was planning to put into it. it's taken me a few years so far but have slowly replaced prety much the entire bottom 12 inches of the car!
Great video Jonny What an amazing place full of stories and memories. Nothing better than a Volkswagen coming back to life 😎🤙👍❤️
Wow what a find. The stamped key fob is exactly how my grandpa would have stuff in his garage. He was an engineer by trade. Great video as always Johnny.
What an episode - His grandfather sounds like a cool dude! It reminded me of when i worked in an older VW site in the early 2000's and used to have a rummage around in the back at the old promo stuff. They 2 had several beetles that were keepers and always wrapped up in the back of the unit... Good times...
This is the reason i subscribe to TLBS.
Genuinely what a lovely episode, thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish.
I always remember when we had to sort through my grandmas stuff when she died when i was only 10 years old and it's never easy. Thank you Johnny for the backstory and thanks to the guys for allowing you to tell it!
I love the Type 4’s, I had a 68 422 Fastback, absolutely loved it!!!
Great video, unlikely to see this again in the modern world! Although my dad passed away some years ago we recently cleared the family home and there are also a lot of car parts, manuals, brochures ans general bits and bobs he acquired over years in the motor trade. We still have his last briefcase when he sold Renaults with the original brochures and glasses guide inside. Love a bit of old garage history
Great episode, went too quickly. I love the aspect of seeing artefacts uncovered, Johnny, it must have felt like xmas to you finding all the parts. But what great grandparents they had getting them involved. Many happy memories in the storage I'm sure. Not getting the van started is not a worry, the fact it spluttered is amazing in itself. Thanks again!
My mum had a beetle bought originally from Jem (she got it 2nd hand) when we lived in Walsall, same shade as the delivery miles car that was sold at the auction too. Great memories.
Just started watching. Remember the auction cars.
Sunday evening and a Jonny barn find show. Life can be very good some times.
Caught this hallway through and listening I immediately knew it was Walsall although I'd never heard of Gem. My Dad was Walsall born and bred and would have been a similar age to his Grandad. Brilliant episode and a fabulous treasure trove.
Awesome awesome episode! Thanks for sharing
This channel is always great fun to watch , never fails
✊🏽
I cant wait to see G-Dad's 2.0 in that truck! Great story
Another great video Johnny, I could easily have watched another hour of you tinkering with the van and the 412
The 2 star petrol prices on the old forecourt pics bring back some memories. I could fill up the 1303 with 2 star for under £15!
this is my fav ep yet. Had a 76 Scirocco and was brought home in a 79 Beetle. Once the VW bug bites it sticks with you forever.
Such nice family stories. Too bad you couldn't get it started. Thanks for sharing,Jonny!
I like the round G Plan Astro table in the back ground - very cool - hope they still have the glass top for it
What a wonderful stash to go through, I really would not be upset if you did another three videos there.
Awesome episode. Such great stories and connections. Lovely VWs too. :-)
My parents lived across the road from a guy who collected Rootes group vehicles plus the odd extra thing like Talbot Samba, Renault 6, coaches and a vintage MG TF. All gone now and house was condemned, but he kept bits and bats of all kinds of things like this Grandad did. Fascinating.
What a lovely story of the chaps grandparents lives. His grandad must have been a right petrolhead.Nice that ppl remember the dealership.xx
Oh Jonny how I would love to join you on your barn finds. Keep up the great work. Love the videos
Absolutely fabulous episode - they are just so emotional and real ( which so much of YT isn’t )
Mr JEM was obviously such a character- kudos to his family ( and Jonny ) for doing this
OMG That original Audi Coupe brochure - I had one ,1982 Coupe GT in the same red - only cost me 4000 - such memories
This channel is one of thee best automotive content on RUclips ,thanks
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed the Coupe GR brochure. Jonny misses his '83 car.
@@TheLateBrakeShow you had one also ? I Loved the way the nose just to rise up when you applied power 😁
It reminded me when I saw the training certificate that I have some around the same period! The last was 411 engine course in Croyden! Nostalgia isn't what it used to be !
That was quite emotional seeing all that VW stuff. Reminded me of going to Links Garage, the VW dealer in Buxton Derbyshire, for parts for my '63 Beetle that I converted to a Dune Buggy back in the early 70's when I was a teenager.
Yes and the 911 was in the body shop I remember it was under a cloth cover and someone left a cloth on the roof with thinners on jem went ballistic.
It’s great to have stories with these vehicles
Another great episode Love the shop history videos and grandad stories, choked me up a little by grandad had a VW camper which I wish I could have kept but I was too young when my dad sold it and my late fathers mechanic had a carman gear. Loved that the 412 and the pickup and the old time car. Would love to see that out running in as well.
Cool video as always, love these barnfinds, looking forward to every new episode. Fun to see som Scania branding on your pants and belt as i live about an hour from the Scania factory in Södertälje and have worked with them to and from on different times in life, once drove one of their test trucks that had an experimental engine with 900+ hp.
COR! Would love to have a tie pin. What a treasure trove of bits, and the vehicles. Brill episode. Thanks.
One of your best barn finds! But I always say that … testimony to an excellent series thanks!!!
At about 6:06 that looks like an HMV 163 wind-up gramophone in the background - rather sought after, as all the "re-entrant" models are. I remember our old neighbour when I was quite small having one of those VW pickups in green.
I had a bay window pickup in Neptune blue just like that, back in the early 90s. OGK14P. Even back then I couldn’t find a set of replacement drop sides for love or money.
These videos are where this channel shines
I think a little bit of wee came out when Jonny saw all the merch and paraphernalia inside the house.
Great video as always , Jonny.
Trying chill after wk end working then see this an get me back to my e39 touring 530d , it’s putting up a fight bless it and been our family bus for over a decade
