Lets be honest here. I think we're really lucky to have gotten this remaster. When you look at all the Star Wars games (both new and remake) that have been announced almost 99% of them have been canceled. And some of them were almost ready to be launched.

      I suppose.
The redone art and cut scenes are nice. But is it worth the 30?
I guess one can argue simply supporting the thing can lead to better things in the future, still a hard sell and I don't need to explain exactly why that is (Do I? 😉Trying to be respectful of the channel but I can name names if I need to).

It's truly a cursed IP. There's so much money to be made from Star Wars games, but the industry seemingly doesn't want to capitalise on it.

@docsavage4921 If you have to ask, maybe it's not for you? Maybe you're too young? This is a dream come true for everyone who remembers the old days. The controls play like a dream play like a dream compared to playing it on either PC or PSX back in the day, and there was no control customization for the old game, you just had to adapt to it.

@@docsavage4921I'd say, try before you buy, through means necessary. To me, it's not worth 30 even though I have some nostalgia for it from the Mac version, but I'll probably pick it up if there's a sale. These kind of remasters of old games should not go for more than 10-15 imho.

Jedi Knight and Mysteries of the Sith need remasters. Not just because they're actually very hard to get running on a modern PC. Jedi Outcast and Academy don't need it as much as we have seen re-releases on modern platforms, and it's not hard to get them running on modern PCs (not to mention graphical upgrade mods), but a remaster with better facial animations would still be appreciated.

Finished a playthrough on Medium difficulty yesterday and really had a blast. I remember this game from my childhood and felt it was well worth the 30 dollars. Shoot, it was $45 plus $5 shipping on release in 1995, or $101 in 2024 dollars! Great review.
About the music - the I-MUSE MIDI soundtrack is tricky because it dynamically changes based on the action. For that reason, it had to remain as a MIDI soundtrack. The timing issue is a known bug, and I-MUSE running on modern hardware using modern soundfonts is the culprit. I've heard Nightdive is aware and hasn't found a way to fix it. It might have been nice to have a static soundtrack option in actual audio files for this reason, but then the player would lose the dynamic audio, so it's a win/lose either way.

I would certainly say they did remaster a fair amount of visuals for exterior parts of cut scenes. They did however to me retain that character rendering moments. I refer to moments where characters are talking like Kyle Katarn and Mon Mothma, General Mohc and Darth Vader. Also the shadow step out moment with a certain bounty hunter. The various planets visited look mostly as I remember them though updated visuals. I remember some levels quite well. Others were as confusing as they were 30 years in terms of layout. Also one never forgets the various sound effects. The trophy names on the PlayStation version are definitely poking fun at the game. I mean this in a good natured way like what the phrik in reference to one of the metals for making the Dark Troopers.

Put me in the "worth $30" camp. There's a LOT of effort put in here from a technological stand point and in redoing all the art by hand - if paying an extra $10 takes me from a minimal port with AI upscaling to a thoughtful remake with a passionate team, I'll pay the extra $10. That's what, a Big Mac combo nowadays? Is that what we're arguing about? I especially want them to give this level of treatment to DFII Jedi Knight, so I'm happy to vote with my wallet.

Oh man Id love a full remake of Shadows of the Empire, make it more cinematic and tie into the star wars universe a little less awkwardly. There's nothing wrong with this price. It's a beautifully executed remaster. If they most they could get was ten bucks it would have had to have been a slapped together buggy piece of shit to even be economically feasible at all.
We should be so lucky that a studio put together a solid effort like this at any price.

This game was my childhood growing up. My dad originally had a demo disc that only had the first 3 levels of the game, so the only time I ever got to play this in its entirety was on the PlayStation 1. • @Mister_Vyar
    @Mister_Vyar 4 месяца назад +2

I have yet to play the remaster (or finish the original game, for that matter) but I'm not sure a new OST would sound much different from the Jedi Outcast or Academy OSTs. I did attempt to play the original game a long time ago, and I vividly remember the entire first level was just using chiptune remixes of the Death Star tracks from Episode IV. Most Star Wars games from that era (2000-2012) have consistently been using remixed cuts of John Williams' various pieces from the original trilogy and/or prequels, with very little original music.
I think I will pick up the remaster at some point but I do feel 30 bucks is a gouge. I'll buy it because I want to see more games remade fully, not just halfway between remaster and remake like this is. But I fear that the fans' collective support for this release will not be interpreted as "we will pay good money for high-quality remakes and remasters" but rather "we will pay any price for a cash grab preying upon our nostalgia." I think this Dark Forces remaster works because it fits into the same genre as wholly new games made in a similar style, such as Warhammer 40k Boltgun. But I'd much rather have an Unreal Engine remake of the entire Dark Forces/Jedi Knight franchise, maybe even with lightsaber combat lifted from Respawn's Jedi games.

    • @philipchurch8772
      @philipchurch8772 4 месяца назад

@@philipchurch8772I should have clarified, I was saying Outcast and Academy are from that era, I know this was a 90's game. I remember seeing it on a shelf in Staples when I was a little kid. But I have since bought the remaster and I'm about halfway through it, and I can still tell most of the music is copied from the OT. A properly orchestrated soundtrack would still sound about the same as Outcast or Academy's OSTs.

I think part of the reason that they didn't do much more on the music, is because Dark Forces had a semi-interactive music composition that interacted with the tension level of the moment in the game, so to speak.
It was another revolutionary thing that they did in the game, besides the jumping, panning up and down and more.
Something which was enabled, almost by design of the digital MIDI music.
If they wanted to do it with updated music, they'd have to make a whole score, with several recorded music-tempo changes, which in our day and age, is a very expensive, complex procedure.
I could imagine that Nightdive, could they have the opportunity, would offer as a patch, free DLC or others and I am in agreement, that they should do so.
But I do not see it as a detraction at all.
While I have been steeped into Star Wars for decades, Dark Forces was one of the very few SW games I hadn't played until this release, even when the original DOS version was available on Steam.
I started out with Dark Forces 2, given to me by my god-father, when I was a wee kid.
Didn't know it was Star Wars at the time though. It was just a game I liked.
I was too young and not able to understand English and had no concept of SWEU until later.
Only after I got a hold of X-Wing Alliance and couple of years later, the novels, that something clicked and I understood the whole connected universe of SW.
Further, price-wise I think the $30/€30 is worth it.
I get the impression that most who are complaining about it, are those that already own some sort of copy.
But this is a game that, upon release in 1995, was essentially a AAA game, was massively revolutionary for genre (FPS), franchise-games, technology and story telling.
It's been fully remade apart from dialogue and can run problem free on basically anything.
For 1st time purchases it's a solid price.
And comparing it to the recent slew of 2.5D shooters thats been coming out, like Ion Fury, the past couple of years, which are at $25 currently 5 years after release, is in my opinion, fair.

I'd pay $30 for these guys to handle any of my favorite games from the 90s.

I think it's when you compare to other games, take Streets of Rage 4 or new TMNT those are entirely brand new with a ton of content at only $25. The Crash trilogy is 3 fully remade games at just 40, that's when it get scrutinized.

This games should have been remade, not remastered.

    Hard pass.
Frankly Dark Forces isn't even that good. I'll pull out my Jedi Academy discs if I need to scratch that Star Wars fix.
That or play Duke Forces, that mod is insanely fun, it can convert any user map into.a Star Wars themed one.

Unpopular opinion: the fan made force engine remaster did everything the nightdive one did minus the cutscenes. I literally just bought the remaster to compare and there really isn’t much of a change. We’re paying 30$ for redone cutscenes and a better menu….

Yes, especially the review copies are all so blatantly positive. Most didn't even notice the price-point I guess. It is a repetitive game anyway. I enjoyed it back in the day ages ago, but now... pew pew pew. Fun for 15 minutes. Empty same same environments.

These are fair points, lads. I feel it's worth mentioning that I did not receive a review copy. Bought it just like everyone else.
It's steep for sure, but I felt it was worth it
