I’m with you on the Waterman Carene. I have only just purchased one a month or so ago and now wonder why I waited so long to add one to my collection. Absolutely beautiful writer!
Hello HJ. Really enjoyed the show. Funny thing about it. I just finished ordering my Waterman Cerene prior to watching the replay. It was if it were meant to be when you ended the show and mentioning this fountain pen. The stars are aligned on this purchase my friend. Love the show. Always entertaining. Keep them coming.
Great video with a lot of good advice. I used to avoid lever fillers as they can be a pain to clean. I've relented though and have a mini collection of vintage Conway Stewarts. I've also picked up a Conway Stewart Churchill lever filler. I take your point on vintage lever fillers, which is part of the reason I'm doing the Writing Equipment Society pen repair course.
I collect vintage Conway Stewarts too. They're great pens. Vintage lever fillers can be a minor pain to clean, but so many of them have better gold nibs than modern ones.
After hearing your comment about 'pens you're supposed to covet' I realised that I don't like the big fat "classic" pens; I'm drawn towards minimalist, modern and, interestingly, metallic pens. My Kaweco Brass Sport gets my heart racing, whereas Montblancs leaves me cold. When I looked at my existing pen collection, it was obvious where my tastes lay, and I couldn't believe I hadn't noticed it sooner. Last night I ordered a YStudio Classic Revolve in black from Galen Leather and to say I am excited about it, is an understatement. I did some research, and how it looked after Drew from Goulet Pens took a sheet of sandpaper to it, sealed the deal.
Wonderful! I love that you have a unique perspective. Follow your bliss! Funny that you mention the YStudio. I am about to sell my Red One. Drew is the best. He has parted from Goulet and is starting his own Channel. He will be massively successful. Thanks for watching and comment again soon. Here’s to individuals like you.
Hi HJ! Very enjoyable show this week! Good advice, too! Would be SAD if Anderson Pens is going out of business! Bought pens, ink and accessories from them in the past. Hope you and yours have a HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
I've had zero luck with the first luxury fountain pen that I bought, a Montegrappa Fortuna, after having sent it back twice for various nib issues. I took it my second "replacement" to a nibmeister that told me that there wasn't anything they could do to repair the nib as the tipping material was botched by the factory. So while the manufacturer was willing to go back and forth with me on trying to fix my pen the end result was far from an enjoyable pen as it still has nib issues. I've heard lots of folks that are fans of this brand so I won't discount their experience but when it comes to buying a high-end fountain pen I only choose to buy Visconti and Pelikan since every pen I've bought with their name on it were perfect and wonderfully enjoyable to use. I'm also very happy with every Pilot, Sailor, and Esterbrook pens which are also great.
Love your point about not following the influencers. Although I have to say I bought a Waterman Edson based on your opinion. Bad Pegleg. But I use it every day because it writes like a dream and is probably the most beautiful pen I own. What can I say…every now and then an impulse buy is a home run.
That's fantastic! You absolutely cannot go wrong with that pen! As you know! I did also say, unless it really speaks to you and that pen truly does! So happy for you, Matie!
I second HJ about Visconti pens. I personally would not buy a new Visconti unless I were in a brick and mortar store, hands on with the pen checking fit and finish, and test writing with it. If all is well, that is the pen I would buy - not another one of the same model in inventory. Sure that other one may be wonderful too, but it may not. I don't want to enter the new Visconti lottery at those prices. I would buy a pre-owned Visconti from a highly reputable seller or someone I know personally and trust. I did that in August at the 2024 San Francisco Pen Show, and it's a beauty and writes like a dream. When they're good, they've very, very good.
Thanks for the conversation. I'm heavily into getting rid of pens right now, so purchases are coming few and far between. I've made it down to 39 so far.
Hi HJ. Great show! I agree with your axioms for buying/not buying fountain pens! I follow these pretty much all the time. I really dislike being pressured into buying a pen. If I am looking at a particular fountain pen and someone buys the last one before I can, I look at it as not being a big loss. If it was meant to be, then I’d still be able to buy it-my life will go on. One should always be able to walk away from the deal and feel good about it. It is unfortunate that Anderson Pens is closing. I have been an avid viewer of their channel, and have purchased a lot of pen related stuff from them-new and vintage pens, and pen parts from them. Lisa and Brian and their staff have always been very helpful, and seem like good people. I wish them the best. Hoping you, your family, and viewers have a great Thanksgiving!
I've only been in this fountain pen rabbit hole a couple years now, and have already broken all of your rules. Even while thinking the same thought while pressing the "Buy Now" button. Very few have been less fun than expected, and several have brought much more enjoyment than I anticipated! Thanks for another great show!
Congrats on the healthy eating and all its rewards. Dads gotta take care of themselves. Heard you mention the Visconti Poseidon. I thought it a good idea to make it my entry to the Visconti family. Fingers crossed, I made the plunge. What a beauty! The fluted barrel feels really nice, as does the Smokey grip. The medium nib is wet w/o being a gusher. Love the magnetic cap which posts magnetically too, albeit with a quirky rattle, but is secure. Don’t know what to call the perfectly almost matte texture, but I love it. Dan Smith had an emerald shadow on sale with an option for an italic grind and I thought why not. 2 months later I have a nib I adore, and a pretty pen, but the pen is not as matte, the magnet not as satisfying, and it doesn’t magnetically post. I’d buy them both again, but I see a nib grind at a pen show in the Poseidon’s future. I’ll buy a Bronze Age if you buy a Poseidon this season! I’ll be watching. Happy Holidays
A friendly advice from Paris, France. You've made an effort to pronounce "Waterman Carène", you almost got it. Here is how we tell it in Jacque Herbin's country. "CA" just like in CAterpillar, "ÈNE" is pronounced as in "pEN" or "hEN". Just imagine a CAR driven by a lovely HEN. Now, your turn to try : "CAR-EN". See ? You made it ! Thanks for trying anyway, and many thanks for you fabulous videos and this one particularly, full of wisdom imo.
A great one tonight. Thank you. I’m having a fantasy that you will consider formatting all 10..err 12, whatever of these to avoid on a doc., that members could download, print and tape, stick, whatever over their desk for reference when ordering their next pen. -I guess that means I better get on with joining. A brilliant, inspired list. And thanks for confirming you did receive the pen, I look forward to hearing your thoughts on it. Have a Great Thanksgiving, all three of you.
Hi HJ! Great video! Your list was very good and thoughtful, I think. Some great things to think about before investing our hard earned money into a new pen. I just purchased a Visconti (mirage mythos), from Appelboom and have asked them to check it. I agree with you it’s always better to have it checked :) It should arrive this week, can’t wait! Wishing you and your family a happy thanksgiving tomorrow!
Hero Hemingway! Good for you! I have one vintage lever fill and it’s so quirky. I wouldn’t seek out another. I enjoyed your cautionary advice; sound. However, sir, you are quite the influencer in my pen life, I value your opinion and feel we are alike so I can trust my instincts as to what is a good purchase based on your reviews. My Homo Sapiens is perfect, thank goodness! I did cave on the LAMY Harry Potter set, cuz I AM a collector! Great video; happy thanksgiving to your family
The hyped pen I went for despite the hype was the Ensso Bolt. It's been inked up on my desk since I received it in May. It's the perfect desk pen, and I only got it because I wanted to check out the mechanism they were creating. The hype I didn't fall for was Benu. I eventually got one second-hand, and it's a great pen, but there's nothing unique about it except the resin pour.
I've recently gone Visconti nuts--------and within the last 6 months purchased 5 beauties...And so far they are perfect!!!!! Lucky, I guess. The new in-house nibs are excellent, at least for me. Both the 14 ktand 18 kt nibs.
Best point: don't charge beyond your means for a fountain pen. Opinion difference: I would never return to convention watches as I am on my 3rd possibly fourth iWatch. Great advice on tariffs.
The tariffs appear to be a reality whatever the motivation. I try to stay apolitical on this Channel, but we do need to address the reality of a 25% price increase on everything appears to be imminent.
@@HemingwayJonesthis is why I’m buying more pens right now than I would have if things had gone a different way earlier this month. I notice the PM of Canada went down for supper with Trump, hopeful given 60% of millions of barrels Canada produces all get sold to the USA so that tariff will just drive up your American pump prices as your refiners in Texas prefer heavy Canadian crude more than the light fracking oil.
Can't dispute any of your comments. I've spent a lot on pens this year and have pretty much had the same approach. Probably a few too many Jowo tubes but they'll all good. I tend to buy the imitations to take to the office though as I once left a Parker 51 by the photocopier and it was gone by the time I realised I'd left it...
but it’s such a great filling mechanism: would be lost without my lovely navy/black Esterbrook model SJ with it’s new/old stock 9128 EF flexible nib - best of all my fp’s!:)
I'm buying a set of 4 clear Platinum Little Meteors. Lots of third-party nibs that you can get for them Everything higher (for now, sine I've just started collecting Matte Lamy Safaris) is too rich for my blood. Going to enjoy a variety of inks instead.
There is one Grail Pen I don’t have, but it can be had a discount any time, and …. I’m going to enjoy the pens I have. And I’m going to enjoy the suspense of waiting for that Grail Pen. How fun is that?
I don’t see myself buying any pens in the near future, the ones I’m interested in, like Danitrio, are currently out of my price range tariff or no. There are plenty of pen associated products I’m eyeing, so I’ll see how that works out.
Hemingway, you'll enjoy Chicago. Definitely a pen city, and the Chicago Art Institute is one of the best art museums in the world. You mentioned Seurat's La Grande Jatte and that's where it lives, along with many other important works. Enjoy!
I was 30 minutes late getting online so have rewatched your video to catch up. Thought you would be naming names but the guidelines are even better. I counted 13 by the way but you combined one or two that I didn't. I want to buy a new pen just because but can't quite convince myself to. Already have eight and can only keep two inked at a time; two old Waterman's, two Ellington's, three Monteverde's, and an Aurora. All of which I'm happy with. Do I really need more? That's what holds me back. Sometimes wish I hadn't given away my Mont Blanc Bordeaux complete set some years ago but she was a good friend. Thanks for the interesting discussion.
Those Schmidt nibs might be jowos. :-) According to one of the penmakers, Schmidt doesn't actually manufacture their nibs. They contract it out - and they put the contract out for bid every 2-3 years. Usually they're bock, but sometimes it's jowo.
It's all about the specs. It's like during WW2, Ford made Jeeps for the military. I am just getting bored with the same old nibs, whichever they are. I get that some pens, like Helen's Sey, do it to keep costs down and that many pen companies don't have the RD budget, but when you review a lot of pens, you get to the point where it's hard to get excited over another stock nib. I wish they would decorate it or something! Give me some meat to sink my narrative into! Hope all is well, My Friend!
Ellington pens use part of your review in a video montage advertising their pens on Amazon uk.... hope this helps, love your videos sorry you are being ripped off for advertising 😢
I do not understand the whole Jowo THING. I just don't. I mean it's nice to have a nib size you can swap out easily but if the main thing I'm doing with that information is swapping it out to a different brand, then I'd rather all these companies who use it would get better nibs to begin with. (I don't like the feedback. It's kinda... murky.) But I love Schmidt. I wondered if I just love Benu, which I do, but the Kakimori fountain pen also uses Schmidt and in my opinion it is a fantastic value for the money. So if you know anybody who wants a comfortable, smooth writing pen under $80, that's my rec. Continuing on... for some reason, the seller on Amazon that looks like Sailor... is actually Sailor. You can buy those safely. And I don't know what they're doing or why but I'll take a 21k nib for under $200, you bet.
Thanks so much and I agree with your completely. The Schmiddy nibs feel smoother to me as well. There definitely are bargains on Az, you just need to be cautious and don’t buy from anyone questionable. Thanks for watching and for the great comment.
Like the comment of buy Mont Blanc direct from them. I see a “Facebook” MB store link but hesitant if it’s legit. I live in a rural area and don’t have MB B&M near me. Only store I have been in is ATL airport. Any advice for MB online?
I have bought MB directly from them on their website and have had them call me. I then called back their number to make sure it is legit. So, I feel good about that. Thought FB, I just don’t know. If it says they are on sale, that is a good way to know that it is not legitimate. They do not go on sale.
This is probably one of the reasons why I have bought new Pelikans rather than MB's simply because my favorite pen shops have them available whereas they don't carry MB's.
Get the Para 3 over the Tenacious every time. The Para 3 comes in better steels. I would also imagine their heat treat is better too. Para 3 is USA made, where the Tenacious is China made. The China factory is where Spyderco makes their cheapest knives. You want something from their Golden Colorado or Taichung factory. Though some like the Seki factory. Lastly, the lock is so much better on the Para 3. I like liner locks, but Spyderco's compression lock is really nice, if you have never had one.
I have a bunch of Delicas I bought in the 90s that are still going strong. I’ve never gone the Para route. I’m more of a Benchmade guy but have been tempted by the Para 3. Thanks for the great perspective.
@ Ya, I would pick Benchmade over Spyderco. Spyderco has some fun stuff though. I do enjoy my PM2. But after that knife, I never felt like getting another Spyderco.
Well I got into fountain pens just a couple months ago and I have already broken two of your rules. I ordered a montblanc on ebay (we will see when it gets here if its good and I also bought a Jinhao montblanc copy)
My faux pas: Buying fountain pens I like so much I just can't bear to ink them up. These include a soft-color brown Diplomat Aero, an Edison Collier Persimmon Swirl, a vintage Eversharp Skyline brown stripe, and an original Platinum Maki-e with a gorgeous floral design. Buyers beware.
I go between a small sebenza 31 with box elder and a custom QSP Penguin. Cant go wrong with either. But like the pens try to feel the knife first just the same
I closed my account at Anderson Pens I got the Pelikan M400 in the blue&black with a medium nib,a bottle of Kon-Peki ,and a bottle of Colorverse Office Series blue.Really going to miss them.
People put themselves out there. I don't mind being criticized, personally, I just prefer it to be polite and constructive. I know I am not right all the time! Thanks for watching and for the great comment.
Thought provoking video. Yes do not buy counterfeit pens. One thought that struck me is that most fountain pen makers have copied from other makers. There are very few original innovations in fountain pens, with most manufacturers producing variations of the designs from decades ago. The last real innovation was the introduction of cartridges which nearly every maker adopted (copied). There are only a few design shapes and fill mechanisms, so most new pens can be considered a copy or evolution of an older pen. The real thing to look for today is quality. Quality in the finish, the materials used and especially the nibs. The best advice is simply avoid buying poor quality pens.
Hi there! Do I rememer correctly, that you also wanted to do a review of that stunning prototype by gravitas, that you showed briefly in a short? Eager to see, how e-cam is behaved today?! 😂 May I slightly disagree on #2? This is certainly true for pens of high monetary or personal value, but f.e. I own a LOT of Safaris, just so I don't have to swap the nibs all the time I suddenly want to write with a broad or stub. Even when I'm not writing with it, I do always carry one with me to hand to a curious person, wanting to try the feel of writing with a fp. (I would definitely not give them my 2000, in case I got it back with a totally bent nib from some regular ballpoint user...)

Did you know that Lady Di's favorite watch was a tank? Beautiful watch.
How nerdy am I that I actually did know that! Muhammed Ali & Andy Warhol as well. Thanks! Love them so much.
I don’t mind. I was joking. As long as they quote me accurately I’m happy with it.
@@HemingwayJones no need to quote you, you appear in person....😊
All Pens Considered 🤣 I love it!
@@HemingwayJones thanks for that advice. Happy Thanksgiving!
This is probably one of the reasons why I have bought new Pelikans rather than MB's simply because my favorite pen shops have them available whereas they don't carry MB's.
@@OmicronTauKappaClassicDaddy love my Pelikan M800.
First time commenting…
So what is a good place to buy a Montblanc? Fahrney’s? They have a 149 Platinum EF. A pen that is on my grail list.
I have never bought from them but I believe that they are OK. Thanks for the comment!
Well I got into fountain pens just a couple months ago and I have already broken two of your rules. I ordered a montblanc on ebay (we will see when it gets here if its good and I also bought a Jinhao montblanc copy)
I break my own rules daily so… currently gazing longingly at the Carene Paris Night!!
Please please please, let me get what I want. Lord knows it would be the first time…..
Oh boy! I should have listened to the whole video before I pressed “buy now”. 😏
It happens to the best of us.
Goulet pens offers a Waldmann Arthur Conan Doyle for only $21,200.00. Sounds like a bargain.
There is definitely a limit I won’t go beyond. That is well above it. Someone must buy these things.
Great video!
😂 on the Web no one want to be criticized or really share! All want to be right😅 Still have to find one accepts to be or could be wrong 🎉
People put themselves out there. I don't mind being criticized, personally, I just prefer it to be polite and constructive. I know I am not right all the time! Thanks for watching and for the great comment.
All checks out. I shall consider. 😂
I just bought the posidon Mythos and it is supper great! (I think it is a schmit nib though lol)
I think you’re right about that. It’s a pretty pen.
The other day I also saw you on an amazon add for a pen but I can't remember which brand it was sorry Ill keep my eyes out
I had no idea. I am such a small Channel that it’s kind of amazing.
May I slightly disagree on #2?
This is certainly true for pens of high monetary or personal value, but f.e. I own a LOT of Safaris, just so I don't have to swap the nibs all the time I suddenly want to write with a broad or stub.
Even when I'm not writing with it, I do always carry one with me to hand to a curious person, wanting to try the feel of writing with a fp. (I would definitely not give them my 2000, in case I got it back with a totally bent nib from some regular ballpoint user...)
Yes! I need to get on those Gravitas pens. I am way behind.
ECamm is actually working today but I gave up on the second camera.
I don’t think we are disagreeing there because you are describing a new experience that the pen is giving you. I’m all in with you.
I love my kaweco
sorry I already bought next 10 :-))
by the way Lockby says that the zipper is scratch proof.
I think we may have a difference in opinion there! If it were made of silicon maybe.
Frank Lloyd Wright's home in Oak Park (Chicago) is worth a visit
and the Robie House
Both on the list!
Is the company Endlesspens considered grey market?
I don’t really know them. I was thinking of Jomashop when I said this.
Was not expecting you to be 6'2" 👀
Taller or shorter?
Much taller was expecting you to be 5'9, 5'10 around my height, I guess I assume most people would be around my height
@ Gotcha. Thanks.

Hi, great show. I take my 149 everywhere, it's always on me though.🤗🦘
Wonderful! I carried mine for a few years. Love it.
