Right on Hemingway about the color blue. I've always signed legal documents in blue. I recently was given a will to submit to the probate court. The signature was in blue so I filed it. I got a call shortly thereafter from a magistrate chewing me out for submitting a copy and not the original will. He was right it was a copy. Color copies are so good now that the blue ink we always relied on doesn't work anymore.

I bought mine in 2016 for 480 EUR. Now it sells for 790 EUR. Impressive price development. But this is how the world goes sadly. Anyhow: Mine is equipped with an F nib. I also own a Waterman Carene F and a Pelikan M805 M The Waterman F is a real F. The Visconti F though is very comparable to the Pelikan M, which means it is quite perfect for me. The Visconti is such a big and heavy pen, that people who write incredibly small would not enjoy it anyhow, so finer than a "normal" M would make little sense. So I take the Waterman if I need a pen to write small. Its barrel is a bit thinner, anyhow so it does not fit my hand for general writing that well, but sometimes you need small and then it is fine. The Visconti F and Pelikan M are very interchangable for me but the Visconti feels much better. I am happy that I have bought it, when it was much more affordable and it certainly is the best pen I own. Currently it is attached to my general work notebook and yes, I do take it to the office. No problem with this thing; the Pelikan would scratch in my bag; the Visconti shruggs it off. Maybe I will get some scratches on the clip over time, but that's not a problem. Tools are meant to be used.

This sounds a lot like the Focus 3 movement that started in the business arena and has infiltrated education. If you don't know it I believe it originated in Texas where all big ideas seem to be born. We must stop to think before we react asking ourselves what outcome could come of each response we choose. And we must take our gut and emotional reactions and out them aside all in an effort to understand what prompts a student action and which action is best for a response. It's also good for parenting. Most days it is "breathe 1 2 3, exhale 1 2 3, breathe 1 2 3, exhale 1 2 3, ok. What is my best reaction to stop this student outburst? " Action...flop! And then try it again in two hours.

When you said about how you had troubles in your life and the effect of it on you was powerful. There was a time in my life that only can be described in a quote by F. Scott Fitzgerald - 'The loneliest moment in someone's life is when they are watching their whole world fall apart, and all they can do is stare blankly.' I had tried to log and journal years ago, it never took. Perhaps now it will stick. I did love the Epictetus quote, looking more into him now.

Your introduction was quite relatable to me. I began journaling a few months ago, but have been doing it more as a diary, logging the days events, but also ideas flow to the paper. I have written one page of introspective on myself. It was dark. It honestly hurts so much to read it I tore it from my journal. I am going to take this video deeply to heart and start changing my choices. I hope one day my financial situation improves to where I can become a member. Having a pen pal as inspiring as you would be lovely.

Much of the good fortune I've experienced in the last 15 years or so can first be credited to God, and secondly to exploring the realms of possibility through the magic of journaling. Nice video, Hemingway. Birds of a feather flock together. Depression is a beast that lurks continuously, just beneath the veneer of our lives. I always must have something of interest to focus upon, or the depression rears its ugly head. For myself, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and failing to remember all the good that I have done over my life and my career, with hyper-focus on failures or perceived failures are the first signs that the abyss is approaching and is already dangerously near. Right now, I am teaching my early 60's-year old self to write using fountain pens and my arm instead of my fingers, like what was taught at the turn of the last century. It should be a challenge that keeps me focused for several more months! I love your videos, and I live vicariously through you and all of those wonderful fountain pens!

Wow, Someone with common sense! I’ve heard tales of people like you, but I thought it was just more of the usual - i.e., lies. You would like Aristotle’s Nichomacean Ethics. Nichmaceus was his father’s name, and his son’s name. Aristotle was HUGE on choices, the “right” choices ( The “golden mean”). “ You are what you repeatedly do” ( Aristotle). It’s how you build character. Charater comes from the Greek word “Kharessien” which meant to “etch or engrave,” thus character is not just a simple surface scratch. You have you REALLY work at it. You have to really dig in like carving your initials into a tree and, and you need to do it forever to achieve the ideal result which is a lasting change on your “soul,” the “rational” part of your soul, the part of soul which distinguishes humans from animals ( The part of the soul our modern “libtards” completely lack/lost). As Aristotle said, and as I quoted once already, “you are what you repeatedly do.” I don’t read much, but if I’m going to sit and read some book, it better be worth my time. “Quality over quantity - EVERY TIME” That ONE book is worth infinitely more than the 500 books per year these people on RUclips claim they read ( one book a week). That one book by Aristotle, or maybe the one book written by the Romans you mentioned is/are worth more than the 500 these people each read each year, MULTIPLIED by each year of their deluded lives. So 1 > 500 x we’ll just say 25 years. These bastards have essentially lobotomized themselves with books. I believe I stole that from German philosopher, Arthur Schopenhauer. Some of the dumbest people I know have master’s degrees, some are doctors. They may know what ever topic they studied, but they have NO fucking common sense, and they no longer have the instincts nature gave them to navigate this hell called Earth and survive. Lobotomized AND Neutered ( of their instincts) by BOOKS ( and of course a CONSTANT IV drip of the media - “The NEW Jesus,” as “the age of pieces” nears its end ( Jesus represented by a fish) and the “Age o Aquarius” approaches. I don’t believe in that bullshit but obviously someone, “the world oligarchy” do. If you fill your head with stupid ideas, well…Just look around at your fellow citizens in the 21’st century. You Hemingway Jones, are like an oasis, as I drown in the sands of suicidal stupidity of the deserts of the 20’th and 21’st centuries. These people today are incomprehensibly stupid. Yes, I’m in an existential crisis ( but I’’m still content “grâce à Aristotle.”) not because I don’t believe in God ( or maybe I do. I would never want to dissuade someone from their beliefs). My existential crisis, is not due to a lack of a believe in God, but rather due to a COMPLETE loss of belief in people. But I digress as usual. What you say makes sense. Arthur Schopenhauer also recommends journaling BTW. Oh, and before I leave you, I ask that you take Voltaire’s advice when reading my comments. “ Jugez une homme par ses questions plutôt que par ses réponses.” Oh and one more from Aristotle, “doubt is the beginning of wisdom” That's for any zombie out there that is dying too “parrot” the phrase “conspiracy theorist.” Parrots speak, but the understand NOT.

I keep 3 kinds of journal. My primary journal is for recording my daily activities and feelings. My second is a commonplace journal where I keep gleaned knowledge, quotes and thoughts of people I’ve read or heard. My third journal is called Essays where I dive deeper into those ideas I want to understand my relationship to. I think the commonplace book and essays are becoming more important to me as I move through life.

I can write pages and pages if something happy is happening, but I can't even pick up the pen if things are really bad. Then there's the ordinary days. Should I really immortalize the weather, what I ate, whether work was busy, which book I'm reading? It seems so trivial. Then, what do I do with all the journals? They pile up pretty quickly and form another type of clutter. Mabe it would all be ok, if I had the thoughts of Seneca. Where is the gorgeous library that was in the video?

I’ve known too many people deeply struggle with feelings of failure and inadequacy after following do x and y will happen advice that didn’t work for them to ever promise anything, BUT there really is a magical experience in writing on the page … so long as you find the approach that speaks to you. It’s a pity that education doesn’t include a deep dive into journaling approaches and techniques, and how ppl of the past recorded themselves and their worlds. I know I wish I had captured the scenes of my life and didn’t start and stop journaling so often because I focused too narrowly on what I wrote about and how. Introspection, commonplace knowledge gathering, quotes, scenes, fleeting thoughts… You just have to explore and find your personal language.
