Finally someone who notes the problem with “cool brass zippers on pen cases.” Regardless of ones’ attempts to be careful not to snag a pen on zipper teeth, it eventually happens, usually with your precious vintage celluloid or hand polished lacquer pen. For this reason I have only bought pen cases with plastic/nylon toothed zippers. My recommendations are the handmade, all leather and velour lined cases made in the US by ASTON Leather in Brooklyn, New York. I have had two, 10 pen cases, for more than a decade, zipped and un-zipped multiple times daily. They are on my desk and hold my Currently inked and in use pens. I have taken them on the road in the past in brief cases etc. with no problems with crushing. Lovely cast brass zipper pulls that we all like, but the zipper itself is plastic/resin toothed. Never scratched a pen yet. No problem with the zipper. I recently bought one of their 6 pen leather pen cases for my vintage pocket pens in use. A very well done, fun, and practical video. I have a lovely Wancher leather pen pouch, but I use that mainly for at desk storage. When I throw some pens in my laptop bag and head for the office they are either in a IDream 365 hard pen case (I think it was around £15 off Amazon and comfortably protects 4 pens) or an Online 90686 two pen leather case (around £12 on Amazon). Great subject HJ, thank you. I’ve been a fountain pen user/collector since the 1960s, and I’ve been looking for the perfect case for almost as long. I have dozens, expensive ones, cheap ones, gimmicky ones and I still haven’t found ‘the one’. As with one of your other viewers, I try to keep my pens in cases either provided by or bought from the manufacturer - Visconti in a Visconti case, Pelikan in a Pelikan one, and Montblanc in a Montblanc - you get the idea. In addition, I’ve tried Risckshaw, Girologio, the Esterbrook cup etc but they don’t do it for me. The closest I’ve come for an everyday carry pouch is Montblanc - they have recently introduced a 5 pen case in their Sartorial line which does it for me at the moment (in addition to their one, two and three pen cases). They’re expensive and not everyone will appreciate the expense, but to me, there is nothing better than producing an elegant case to go with an elegant pen. I considered the Lochby but dismissed it out of hand. I don’t like the way pens sit in the slots and potentially, could scrape against each other. If I were an artist, sketching en plain air, I would keep pencils in the waxed bag, but pull a 149 or Egyptomania out of it? No way. Another rigid case that suits most pockets in terms of cost are Lamy’s zippered 2 and 3 pen cases. Small enough for a pocket but fitting a wide variety of pen brands. As always, a thought provoking video Hemingway. Chapeau.
Thanks so much for the great comment. I will say that the slots on the Lovcby are staggered and do not run against each other and they are capacious enough that you could push your pens all the way in. It’s not perfect, but it does have that going for it. It is a bit soft. I guess we both haven’t found the perfect one yet.
A Toyo steel box works well to tuck a couple pens in pen sleeves into it along with some other stationary accessories and protect against force while traveling if you think it's going to get a lot of abuse. However, I've found that for most purposes, a fabric case with a little padding will do a pretty good job of redirecting/cushioning forces from going directly through the pen body. But I like to create "spaces" in my bag with less squishable things like books so that any pressure is going to go through those, not the pens to the side of the book. Basically, I think that with smart packing, a hard shell case usually isn't critical. It's the same principles to safely packing bottles of liquids in checked luggage when you don't have a hard shell suitcase.
Good evening! I have a few leather cigar cases that have two halves that slid together. I have three cases, one that handles two pens, a three pen case, and one that handles four pens. The cases provide enough structure and rigidity to protect the pens, and since the two halves slide together, the cases can handle various size pens. The leather interior has enough padding to keep them from being scratched. Depending on where you look, you can find reasonably well made cigar cases that start at $25/$30 for a two slot case/holder, up to $60/$70 for a four slot case/holder. My Pelikan M1000 and MB 149 easily fit in the cases.
My current favorite pen cases are the Rickshaw/Sinclair. I have 3 that I keep my inked pens in. Leaving the house I take one, depending on my mood. I sometimes also swap between cases to get a different selection. When a pen runs out, I clean it, put it away, and pick a new pen to ink. I am also a big fan of the Tran canvas cases from the 1990s. (They no longer make pen cases, but they still make pencil cases.) I have one 40 pen case for my vintage pens - most of which currently need to be refurbished. And a 10 pen case that I use to put pens that are soon to be inked, or inked pens that I a considering cleaning out before they run out.
Franklin Christoph has a gorgeous formal pen case for 3 pens. I also love my Lihit Labs pen case. The former looks so classy and has stronger support. The latter is more casual and can hold more pens or refills and a small pad. The right case for the right bag or occasion.
The YStudio pen that was given to me as Christmas gift came with a tubular case made from wood. Most of my cases were made from fabric to fit a pen set and note book by my partner. The pens are scratch proof, looking good.
Nice exposition on the benefits and possible drawbacks of different kinds of pen cases. I prefer a harder case without zippers, and Franklin-Christoph makes nice ones in leather for one, three, six or twelve pens at reasonable cost and well made. They're an American company, making pens and pen accessories and well-established. Their website is well worth a look. I've purchased a number of their different cases over the years and never been disappointed in how they look or the quality of their build at reasonable cost.
For years I never used pen cases - I'd frequently clip several pens to the opening of my laptop bag. All good till I found my Pelikan M815's cap still clipped in place and the pen rolling around inside the bag - nib was fine, but I put a scratch in the piston knob that I thankfully managed to polish out with micromesh & Novus. (whew!) When I recently acquired the M1000 Renaissance Brown, I decided that a case was in order & got the Pelikan 2-pen zippered leather pouch. Does the job nicely (you do need to watch the zipper though) - of course the WingSungs and Jinhaos still get clipped to the laptop bag, as ever.
I use the Kokuyo MOCOCO Pen Case from JetPens. It's kind of a zippered soft pillow for my pens that's thick enough to protect them. It's too big for your back pocket though.
The Lochby is a really good pen case, also because you can use one of the inner or outer slots for extra ink cartridges (e.g. The Traveler). I can fit two MB cartridges into one of those slim tubes that come with eye-glass repair kits--(available at the checkout counters of most American grocery stores). This, plus the two carts in The Traveller itself, should suffice for short trips. I also like to carry a mechanical pencil, and a ballpoint for forms, signing receipts, etc. I like the outdoor aesthetic of Lochby. However, for a one pen solution, it is too big. A single-pen MB pouch (not the zipper variety) is elegant, but offers no secure space for extra carts, and the protection offered is minimal (the top of the pen is exposed to the elements from the sides). The Traveler used to come with its own case, with slots for extra carts, but it was extremely bulky. I am intrigued by that Esterbrook one-pen case in your video, which should offer solid protection, but I dislike magnets, and: there's something dissonant to me about placing a Montblanc in an Esterbrook case---I'll have to see my therapist about this...🥴On the whole, I'm impressed by Lochby products. The Venture pouch is amazing for storing pencils, erasers, and other supplies.
I do the same thing with the clips in my Quattros. If you are really worried, the clip to the right in the rightmost pocket, clips to the left in the other three yields the best clearance between the exposed parts of the clips. And, agreed, a little longer wouldn't be a bad thing. My Opus 88's aren't a good fit. The zipper teeth are plastic. Once you pull the zipper slider over the tops of your pens, there isn't much of a scratch hazard. Lochby has announced the coming release of a Note Taker's wallet and I'm chomping at the bit to order one - but I'm an adult. I can be patient. Or, this is all a facade. Either way, Lochby gear is really nice, and I can't want for the revival of their Bond messenger bag.
Dear Mr. Jones: Thank you very much for such an excellent video. Finding an ideal case is as much as debating which fountain pen is better, but it will always be a fun debate. As a topic for another video, perhaps you could highlight the convenience of using a case to protect our beloved pens. I have a cases from brancs such as Kaweco, Lamy, Diloro, Hide & Drink (yes, that's the name), and even some handmade, and more than once have proven useful, not only to carry pens when traveling or just to the office, but also to protect them from scratches, crushes or falls. The fine detail of accommodating them within the case (the clip tip was brilliant!), the capacity (for 1, 2, 3 or more), the closing types (metallic, plastic, with magnet, with flap or even without it), materials (leathe finish, cloth, plastic), with divisions or straps, should also be evaluated, especially if we consider to buy a case like those of Esterbrook. Warm regards from Mexico.
I have a Lochby Quattro and I like it well enough, although I use it mostly for pen storage because I don't enjoy pushing the zipper out of the way. ( I love the other Lochby products though.) My preferred cases for both storage and transport are Richahaw pen sleeves and rolls. They're soft and protective, come in great colors and patterns, hold pens securely without elastic bands (which I distrust), and they are vegan. I also have a nice hard shell case from Franklin Christoph that is non-leather but looks very classy. I don't use elastic bands except for cheaper pens. I find them too scratchy, and there have even been incidents where the dye in the elastic stained people's pens. (That's rare, but it has happened.)
The most likely way I would damage a pen is by sitting on it, so I require a stiff case. Those over-engineered Esterbrook cases are the bomb, but I won't pay for one.
Hi HJ… didn’t know where to put this comment so putting it here 🥴 I recently got a vintage Kaweco V61 with 14 kt gold nib. Nib is cool looking and pen is from the 1960’s. It’s a. Extra fine (liking fiber nibs lately) but I’d say it writes more like a fine. I want to tell you about it because it is such a great writer and has been the one. I pick up everyday since I got it! Very smooth and has line variation as well. I have it inked with Herbin eclat saphire. My first time trying this ink. Loving the pen 😊
Thanks, HJ. Oh no, it looks like you scratched your pen on the zipper at about 9.05! I hope it didn't scratch it. The only pen case that I usually take with me when I leave the house is a 3-pen hard case that has a magnetic flap that folds over. My pens are well protected in it.
I like those cheap two pen Amazon cases that come in like a dozen colors branded Diloro. I have a number of term and carry them daily. I knew want just one pen. I always want two. I may decided I want a different color after I’ve left the house or maybe just to have a backup.
Did you see the new Montblanc crossbody bags with the pronounced integrated outside pen holder? Those are real statement pieces for fountain pen bearers.
not sure if Lochby are available in UK, but would be interested if they were: suspect shipping from the States would be prohibitively expensive!; fwiw: have recently bought a Kokuyo pen case called the N Storage which, like your Lochby, is squishy so won’t protect fp’s if you sit on them but does protect them from scratches:)
I agree I wish it was a few more mms longer. I do love it though. I probably should have waited for your review. They will probably make it longer now that the hj has spoken. The shortness is its only significant deficiency imo. I don’t care about other issues. It is fine to me for less than 4 pens.

Kind of snobby but I use only leather pen cases for my pens. I love Montblanc but they are outrageously priced, you can get a nice pen for the price of one of their single pen cases. I have found the DiLoro is one of great quality, plenty of color choices, soft leather and available in various sizes. By the way, it not a lapel pocket, lapels don't have pockets, it is a breast pocket.
Hope your trip was amazing. Was in Rome and Florence this past July and was fortunate to visit Stilo & Stile where I bought my grail Delta DV, stub. And, my favorite, was meeting Natalie (sp) at the Visconte flagship store. Enjoyed this on-the-fly video. Preparation is for cowards :)
Sort of new Pen guy.... Do you only carry expensive pens in the travel cases? It would seem my inexpensive Lamy would be fine in my front pocket on my shirt. I do have a few pens that will never leave the house. Never thought about putting them in a case.

Thanks for your previous reviews. However, I’m not interested in a “members only” analyst. Your opinions are appreciated but are, apparently, based on revenue. This isn’t a good look. I wish you all future success.
I have no idea what you are talking about. What is a Member’s Only Analyst? What does that even mean? What is based on revenue? What are you talking about?
Your RUclips channel now has restricted “members only” videos. I believe that a dedicated pen expert would not limit his knowledge to only those who are willing to pay. All best wishes for your success.
My Chanel always has had Member only videos, so that is not a big change. My Members only stuff though is loser and not reviews. In fact, there is not a single exclusive review back there. It is Blooper Reels, me playing guitar (poorly), and me speaking about my day and editing. It’s stuff that doesn’t really fit on my Channel. So do what you want, but don’t insult my dedication.
Wonderful tip. Thanks.
I have a bunch of the Noct pen cases. I don’t think Noct exists anymore, but Rickshaw sells a version of the Noct Sinclair. Similar to the Quattro.
@@stuartschwartz5341 Yes. The Rickshaw/Sinclair
I currently just use the leather Kaweco Sport 2-pen pouch with chain/coin.
Franklin Christoph has a gorgeous formal pen case for 3 pens. I also love my Lihit Labs pen case. The former looks so classy and has stronger support. The latter is more casual and can hold more pens or refills and a small pad. The right case for the right bag or occasion.
Very nice.
The YStudio pen that was given to me as Christmas gift came with a tubular case made from wood. Most of my cases were made from fabric to fit a pen set and note book by my partner. The pens are scratch proof, looking good.
Very cool!
I’m glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for the suggestion, I will have to check it out.
Sounds like a sound plan. Thanks for watching.
I use the Kokuyo MOCOCO Pen Case from JetPens. It's kind of a zippered soft pillow for my pens that's thick enough to protect them. It's too big for your back pocket though.
That sounds lovely!
I love leather pen cases, sometimes i think i get more pens so i can have more cases!!
Etsy has a wonderful selection of pen cases . Hard and soft bodied to chose from.
Dear Mr. Jones:
Thank you very much for such an excellent video.
Thank you very much, My Friend! Are you anywhere near Mexico City? I am looking forward to visiting there.
I have several vintage Montblacs (220,221, baby) and I wanted a crush resistant pen case and finding one is difficult.
Thank you for sharing!
Thanks very much.
The most likely way I would damage a pen is by sitting on it, so I require a stiff case.
Those over-engineered Esterbrook cases are the bomb, but I won't pay for one.
Yes! I am very aware about my back pockets from years of having that sciatic nerve issue, but sitting on one could be disastrous.
@@HemingwayJones I would never put pens in my back pockets. I would find some way to sit on the case in the plane, or car, or sofa, etc.
Pen case in winter is not a problem ! your cloth works as a pen case
Hi HJ… didn’t know where to put this comment so putting it here 🥴
I recently got a vintage Kaweco V61 with 14 kt gold nib.
That sounds amazing! Very well done.
@@HemingwayJones oh forgot to mention it is a piston filler Kaweco 😊
Thanks, HJ. Oh no, it looks like you scratched your pen on the zipper at about 9.05! I hope it didn't scratch it. The only pen case that I usually take with me when I leave the house is a 3-pen hard case that has a magnetic flap that folds over. My pens are well protected in it.
No pens were harmed in the making of this video. 😂
@@HemingwayJones That's good! 🍻
I bought mind from Atlas stationery 48 it hold..great video frank in Oswego, ill
Thanks for the interesting case video, HJ!
Thank you!
I like those cheap two pen Amazon cases that come in like a dozen colors branded Diloro. I have a number of term and carry them daily. I knew want just one pen. I always want two. I may decided I want a different color after I’ve left the house or maybe just to have a backup.
Very nice! I will check them out. Thanks!
Did you see the new Montblanc crossbody bags with the pronounced integrated outside pen holder? Those are real statement pieces for fountain pen bearers.
I have not. I should check it out. Thanks!
They are 1000€+ but I guess I‘ll get one anyways, it such an elegant way to show everybody that you are a pen guy.
Hey Tim, check out the Franklin Christoph 3 pen envelope. Very nice and compact and inexpensive. They are great...
Sounds good. Thank you.
Wow, one-take video. Great job, Tim.
Thank you! It's tough for me, but sometimes I like to Challenge myself.
not sure if Lochby are available in UK, but would be interested if they were: suspect shipping from the States would be prohibitively expensive!; fwiw: have recently bought a Kokuyo pen case called the N Storage which, like your Lochby, is squishy so won’t protect fp’s if you sit on them but does protect them from scratches:)
I agree I wish it was a few more mms longer. I do love it though. I probably should have waited for your review. They will probably make it longer now that the hj has spoken. The shortness is its only significant deficiency imo. I don’t care about other issues. It is fine to me for less than 4 pens.
I have it with me right now. It is handy. Thanks so much for watching.
Seiko Arnie. That’s a great watch.
Thank you! I have so much affection for that watch.
Buenas tardes desde España, a mi me gusta también portar mis estilográficas en los huecos que para ello se establecen en mis carpetas portafolios, así tengo todo lo que necesito en un solo espacio.
Un Saludo.
Thanks you very much for watching.
What are your thoughts on a pen roll? No zippers
I prefer a Rickshaw coozy case more secure in my opinion.
Love Rickshaw.
HJ I don’t know if you saw my comment on Tuesday’s video,I mentioned that I ordered a book from Amazon called “War And The Fountain Pen”by Richard Binder and was wondering if you heard of it.
I like this video!
Thank you!
For me anything with zipper is a no go right away.
Sort of new Pen guy.... Do you only carry expensive pens in the travel cases? It would seem my inexpensive Lamy would be fine in my front pocket on my shirt. I do have a few pens that will never leave the house. Never thought about putting them in a case.
I sometimes carry pens on their own. Other times I need to keep track of a bunch of different one. Thanks and all the best.
A hard case - the other pelikan - small for pens and spare inks
I just bough a 48 pen case from Atlas stationary new pen coming this week cross adventure med nib fire engines red.
Wonderful!
Pen boutique $19.00 plus tax.i think you have won cross,I'd just order a cross set from corporate gift pens in St Charles for my inter pastor chrome with his name on it.
look at German company "Sonnenleder"
I enjoyed the video Hemingway, as always -- except for your choice of background 'music', the constant hum of which set my teeth rattling. 😮 Please don't use that again, as it almost prevented me from finishing the otherwise terrific video. Thanks!
Carrying a pen case in your backpocket could get pickpocketed when in a crowd, the thief won;t know the difference between a pen case and a wallet, and won't care.
There is no one more dedicated to their Channel, their viewers, and Members than I am.
