  • Today I'm going to show you how to make white rice in the Instant Pot. I did an Instant Pot rice experiment in my kitchen. I tried making long grain white rice 4 different ways and I show you the results.
    See my website: www.365daysofcrockpot.com/how...
Join the FB Group: / 365daysinstantpot
For my experiment I tested the rice four different ways:
    1. A 1 cup rice to 1 cup water ratio with a 5 minute cooking time and 5 minute NPR.
    2. A 1 cup rice to 1.5 cup water ratio with a 5 minute cooking time and 5 minute NPR.
    3. Rinsed rice with a 1 cup rice to 1 cup water ratio, 5 minute cooking time and 5 minute NPR.
    4. Rinsed rice with a 1 cup rice to 1.5 cup water with a 5 minute cooking time and a 5 minute NPR.
Note: I did NOT use the "rice cup" that came with my Instant Pot. I used a regular measuring cup.
An important note: You need at least 1 1/2 cups of water in your 6 quart Instant Pot to make it come to pressure with a moisture absorbing ingredient like rice. Therefore I do not suggest cooking less than 1 cup of rice in your Instant Pot. If you want to just make a small batch of rice then you can use the pot-in-pot method.
    Results:
    1. The thing I found the most interesting was that the rinsed rice wasn't any less sticky than the unrinsed rice. Lesson learned...don't waste time rinsing long grain white rice. It doesn't make a difference.
    2. I was skeptical that a 1:1 ratio would even work. It did though. However the rice was not as soft and not as moist as the 1:1.5 ratio.
    3. I preferred the unrinsed rice that had the 1:1.5 ratio. It is soft and fluffy and moist.
    4. I need to do one more experiment with a 1:1.25 ratio. I believe that this might be the best ratio yet. Alas, I ran out of rice and time. But I believe that the best way to make long grain white rice is by using a 1 cup rice to 1 ¼-½ cup water ratio with a 5 minute cooking time and a 5 minute natural pressure release.

That rice you first showed looked like what my mother use to serve all of us kids when I was growing up and I stayed away from rice until the Air Force sent me to Thailand during the Vietnam War. I met a guy there who was going to the same base which I was going to and he talked me into trying some fried rice he was eating and I love the rice dish he had and ordered a bowl myself and ate it all. After that I was eating rice again until the present.

1:1 with long grain white rice; 3 cups rice and 3 cups water. Use the RICE button, that’s what it’s for. It’ll cook for 12 minutes, then do a 10 minute natural release. Easy. Always rinse the rice until the water clears. Also, rice is somewhat dirty.

Thank you for experimenting and sharing results. I find if I don't rinse the rice before cooking in IP the pot spits starchy vapor throughout the cooking. Since rinsing rice requires more water, I've decided only to IP rice when I can cook another food in the IP w. pot-in-pot method. 🙂

My family eats a lot of rice. Prior to the IP we probably went through 4 rice cookers, just plain wore them out. Since switching to the IP I only use the rice cooker when both IPs are being used and we still need rice. I prefer the IP for cooking rice. I use the 1:1 ratio and rinse the rice. Rinsing to wash out any non-rice debris because I really don't notice a difference in texture between rinsed and non rinsed. Thanks for the video.
FYI - for brown rice I use 1:15 and cook for 20 to 22 minutes. 5+ minutes natural release on both.

I made unbelievable rice in mine once and haven’t been able to duplicate it even though what it makes is good. I do 3 minutes high pressure and tonight I’m doing the rice setting for first time. I always scrub my rice, not just rinse but put your hand in there and grip it over and over scrubbing the starch off.

I like your approach. I browse multiple techniques and demos to gain ideas in the principle ideas. Then go off and experiment on those ideas.
I found 1c white long grain rice to 1.25 water at 3min high pressure with 10 min natural release works well
But i do like to include chicken bouillon and /or onions and spices or proteins to give me a pilaf final product.
Still experimenting... but keeping in mind added veggies and proteins ad moisture of their own for the rice to absorb.

I totally agree. Rinsed rice it stickier than dry rice (though a lot of people disagree.) Personally, I do not like sticky rice. Rinsing is fine if that's what you want. Just a preference. What works perfectly for me every time...
1:1 ratio dry rice and liquid
    3 minutes pressure
    18 mins NR
Perfectly fluffy white rice every time (I use Jasmine or Basmati). 👍🏼
    Thanks for the excellent video.

Personally I like my rice sticky and soft and cooked in broth if I eat it with a meat dish. For breakfast I like it dryer and firmer with sugar and butter. So I guess there’s really not a wrong way unless it’s undercooked or burned. I liked your comparison video. Thanks.

I'm only asking because the 6qt at home seems to work awesome using the rice setting but for some reason the 3qt seemed to burn to the bottom and the rice didn't taste done to me. Any ideas?

Somehow I don't like the way the rice comes out with the instant pot. have tried rinsed, not rinsed, with oil, with no oil, less water, more water, etc. I do love to make beans and no bean chili, my daughter & grandson eat it all up.

The reason we Asians rinse rice is mainly for cleanliness based on milllenia of tradition, habit and necessity. The other is to rid the musty odour that comes with the rice milling process. Over thousands of years, that washing has become a ritual. I and many of my contemporaries who have 8 + decades of eating rinsed white rice can tell whether the rice was rinsed once, or twice or 3 times. Socially, serve us old geezers some unrinsed rice and we would not say anything about it, but the word would somehow get back to the cook/host.

  • @jamesgoacher1606
    @jamesgoacher1606 4 года назад

This is a mine field. There are so many variables. Volume measurements do not help, the rice can come in different densities and absorbtion levels. Years ago I had Lebonese work mates who cooked their rice after rinsing, but I suspect that was to wash away no0n-rice things. They then covered it with water and simmered until they thought it was done then drained the excess water. Mind you thay were making an enormous pot full.

I use the rice button all the time. It works fine on my 8 quart. 1:1 with long grain white rice; 3 cups rice and 3 cups water. Use the RICE button, that’s what it’s for. It’ll cook for 12 minutes on low pressure, then do a 10 minute natural release. Easy. Always rinse the rice until the water clears unless you want it sticky. Some people feel the need to do things their own way I guess.

    • @einsaan
      @einsaan 3 года назад +1

@@PDXTundra Yes, i also found the rice button and the 1:1 work perfectly fine. I use basmati rice but usually just a cup and a half with same amount of water. Press rice button for less amount and cook for 8 minutes on low pressure. I then let it warm and natural release for 10 minutes to get basmati rice the way it should be, non-sticky but still moist.
