I’m sure you’ve heard this all before, but be careful about concentration risk with any individual stock picks. A lot of people also have a bias toward dividend investing in retirement because psychologically it feels better to get dividend income rather than selling shares. However, if the shares of a non-dividend paying alternative appreciate faster than the dividend you’re getting, you would actually be better off in the non-dividend focused option. IMO, always look at “total returns,” taking into consideration expected dividends and price appreciation when evaluating an investment. Anyway, I’m glad to hear life continues to go well. I leave on Aug 1st to BKK. Plan on going to Pattaya and I'm thinking at the last minute not to sign a lease for 6/12 months but to hotel stay cheap so I can visit all the sites. Not set up a home base but be free to explore for a couple of months before I land in one place for a longer/permanent residence. I know I would loose money but is that the right way based off your experience?
You could always go with a short-term lease. You might get a little more space and save some money over hotels. The "right way" is the way you decide you want to go.
You said you are not just "existing or surviving" and that is the biggest reason I am searching for something other than where I am now in SW Florida. IF I want to quit working, I would only be existing here, even with my house fully paid off!! So I am looking for an alternative.
My main hobby now is try to early retirement like you and screw my boss. I am planning to retire in Pattaya or Jomtien Early next year as 54 years old. Life in California is work work work. 😂. Thank you for a good video. 👏

I wanted to retire in Thailand in 2 or 3 year’s time, the new Thai tax has put me off, plus when I looked into health insurance 4600 baht per month sounds reasonable, but as you get older your insurance will increase, roughly if your still around in your eighties, your insurance goes up drastically to roughly 20,000 baht per month, have you looked into this..? If so what are your plans, thanks
I am wondering how you pay taxes in the US? I am assuming that as you with draw money from your IRA/401K or sell a profitable investment in your brokerage account you generate taxable income and need to file with the IRS. Where are you receiving your mail or do you do all on-line. Are you using an Thai based account to file or are you dealing with one back in the US via on-line or flying back?
I have been e-filing my taxes for years. I can't touch my IRA yet because of my age. My tax bracket will drop as my income drops, so my tax burden shouldnt be much. I'll be c overing any tax due from cash savings for now.
My hobby is travel. I think RUclips is an addiction at this point😂. I retired January 1 and spent the first four months of retirement traveling around SE Asia. I am planning get an LTR visa January next year. I am hoping you can help me with a question. I understand that I will need to get the visa within 30 days of arriving in Thailand (plan is for Jan 1/25) and that at that time I will need to produce a lease. I only plan to spend January through June in Thailand and to travel the remainder of the year so I don’t want to pay a lot of rent for the six months I’m not there and I’d prefer to spend a few months traveling around Thailand trying to decide where I want to commit to a lease. So, I’m thinking about getting a year lease somewhere REALLY cheap shortly after arriving so I have a lease to produce and then take my time to find a place to rent through June 2025 and for 2026. I don’t want the cheap place to be a dump. I will still use it as a base and to store items so would like A/C. Does that make sense to you or do you have any other suggestions? I’m not on a tight budget but I’d rather be spending my hard earned money on something I’m going to enjoy rather than a lease for the sake of proving residency. I do need to maintain a residence there year round even if I am not going to be there. (It’s a tax thing.). Any advise would be appreciated.
Your plan makes good financial sense. There are plenty of nice condos available at great, low rents everywhere in Thailand. Spend your first week condo shopping. You'll be able to find something that fits your needs in that time.
Is air quality better in Bang Sarah than in Jomtien? I came to Jomtien a week ago and I have not stopped coughing! Something in the air here is very irritating to my nose and windpipe. With humidity and cloud cover, smog may be a problem here! I am asking whether moving to Hua Hin or Bang Saray is a solution.
I currently use Pacific Cross. The final cost will depend on your health and options you can choose to add or remove. You have to find the best for you.
Please make sure you show us the details when immigration forces you to the department of financing before you get you retirement visa re stamped . I want to see the outcome of hiring an account gathering all your American tax documents and how much you will be paying Thailand to live there more then 180 days
Retired Working For You just did a great video on that very topic. You should check it out so you'll feel better and will stop spreading these unfounded worries.
Your math forgot to subtract taxes from your gross income. When you start taking withdrawals from your IRA, those withdrawals will be taxed as ordinary income. So you need to keep that in mind as well. You also left out a significant expense for most which is Health Insurance. I looked at my health insurance and projected annual premiums over the next 20 years. I found that while my premium now would be about 4,000/month, if I set aside 6,000/month starting now, that extra savings will be there in future years when the premium would be more than 6,000.month
Actually, I covered health insurance expenses, and the difference between between my gross income and expenses is sufficient to cover taxes. At 2000 per month, I'll be in the bottom tax bracket. Thanks for watching.
Here I'am watching your video on "Black Monday". Hope you anticipated this slaughter. Currently I'm slow traveling in South America. Plans are to travel to SEA in the Spring 2025.
Looks like a buying opportunity to me! That's why you keep some cash in the portfolio. When there's a fire sale you can add to your positions. Value might be down but you don't lose unless you sell. Great thing about investing for dividends is they keep paying even on down days. Happy travels.
With your monthly living budget of less than $1,000 usd, you only need to invest in dividends that generate enough to pay for living expenses and put the rest in growth stocks amd ETFs. Also, enough dividends that can offset standard deductions for singles so you owe a big fat zero in taxes.
I wouldn’t move out of Jomtien to Bang Saray especially to save 5000 B a month ,facilities aren’t that good out there and so quite, you will loose that money by the inconvenience incurred . I live in View Talay Jomtien ,everything very convenient life easy . I spend about 75,000B a month super life ,Jomtien great place to stay,I will never move.
I think 25,000B a month is a struggle,I certainly would not want to live on less than 50,000B a month ,I have been here 30 years I would not want to spend my time cooking and staying at home ,spending time on investments ,

Yep, that's why I left the US. Couldn't retire there.
My main hobby now is try to early retirement like you and screw my boss. I am planning to retire in Pattaya or Jomtien Early next year as 54 years old. Life in California is work work work. 😂.
Thank you for a good video. 👏
You can do it! Make a plan and start checking items off the list. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for sharing. This is the type of content that is missing from Southeast Asia retirement vlogs. Now that you have more time, are you finding that you're more involved with your investments and following markets closer? Are you reading all those filings now 😂
555 I'm not reading filings yet. I've always kept a daily watch on the markets so not much has changed there. If there's something moving or big news, I have to stay up late to keep an eye on it or set limit orders for my overnight.
Hello love your videos very informative… I would like to meet up with you I arrive on the 23rd next week!😊🎉 Ralph here buddy love the passion of Dj entertaining❤
Shoot me an email, Ralph, and we'll connect.
For me, I probably invest in REITs, covered call ETFs, preferred ETFs, BDCs, MLPs for income then use income to pay for my living expenses and leftovers will go to growth ETFs like QQQ. Invest in individual stocks are a little risky. I prefer diversification.
i really like the way you live, it will be a pleasure to met you one day !
Thanks. See you when you get here.
geez I need to find something like that.. Can you spell the name of that place?? And why did you move away from Jomtien? Was it because of noise? I don't want to live anywhere with lots of noise..
I live in Bang Saray. I lived on the south end of Jomtien Beach so it was very quiet. I talked about moving and why in a previous video.
Hi just came across ur video, I like the area you decided to live, could u do some reviews on accommodations looking for a studio or 1 bedroom, please and thank you
Hi, there's only 1 big condo building in the town, Del Mare. There have been several videos done on it. Check @GoodVibesPattaya - Jason has done a few. I've been looking into a few of the smaller buildings and hope to have some soon but nothing scheduled yet. Thanks for watching.
One day at a time.
would love to know your thoughts on the proposed new tax on brining money into thailand and what impact that will have
Thanks, I've covered that in other videos. Nothing to worry about.
How much have you invested to be able to get a return from the dividends?
The important part is taking the steps to create income streams. Everything helps.
When kicks your Social Security Benefits in? I assume when that happens you even do not need your dividend income anymore to get by, correct?
I'm only 57 so I have a few years before I'm even eligible.
AQI is very good right now. (24)
@@RetiringToAsiaDid you notice that the air quality is better in Hua Hin than in Pattaya? Esp. during the rainy season? Thanks.
IQAir shows PM 2.5 levels are up a bit. Welcome to Thailand.
Hi...Health Insurance, and what company and what plan?
I currently use Pacific Cross. The final cost will depend on your health and options you can choose to add or remove. You have to find the best for you.
Our Stock portfolios are very very similar, I own more than half of the same stocks. One big difference, you have ALOT more money than I do! LOL
Thankfully, it doesn't take much to be comfortable here.
Living in a foreign country and paying living expenses in local currency also has an advantage.
What about your Social Security Benefits? Are you taking it later at 65 or 70?
I'm not eligible yet, so they aren't a factor right now.
I like to do visual arts and crafts in my retirement
Very cool
Just wondering, are you not collecting Social Security benefits as well?
Nope, I'm only 57.
@@RetiringToAsia thanks for the reply. Great video; very informative and I look forward to more of the same.
Glad it works for you. It's not for everyone. Thanks for watching.
Can you tell me the name of this place please?
Bang Saray
Sorry mate left the video early could not follow without the equivalent amounts in dollars or euros
We don't use those currencies here. Easy to Google to find the current conversions.
Don't you have pension too? I will rely on: social security benefits, pension, dividends from my own investments.
I think 25,000B a month is a struggle,I certainly would not want to live on less than 50,000B a month ,I have been here 30 years I would not want to spend my time cooking and staying at home ,spending time on investments ,
Everyone is different.
Soon your social security benefits will pay for your living expenses so you don't have to tap into your own investments.
Few more years.
you will be paying half in tax
Not at all accurate
how much should I budget for the ladyboys
For me, a big fat zero!!! 😊
🤣
hahaha

I enjoy your videos very much, they are very informative. I am planning on retiring to Thailand at the end of next year. I will be contacting you via Gmail, I have some questions I would like to ask you.
Thanks again for your informative videos.
Thanks for watching. I'll look out for your email.
