  • Join me as I learn how to play Peloponnesian War, a solo specific historical game from GMT, designed by Mark Herman.
There are unique mechanics where the player and the AI 'swap sides' if certain conditions are met.
This game has quite the learning curve and I'm still trying to climb it.
If you wondering how the game plays, or are also finding Peloponnesian War a challenge, hopefully this video will help.

Hi all, this link is for an app that should make route finding easier. boardgamegeek.com/thread/2446781/route-finder-web-app-beta

Hi - purchased this a couple of weeks ago as I'm a predominantly solo player, and liked the look of this to get into the 'war' gaming arena. I have lots of board gaming experience, but the only other game I have that comes close this in style is Ancient Civilisations of the Inner sea (which I really like). I'm really getting into GMT stuff. I found this a really steep learning curve too. I've played 3 times. First time I played one round to get a feel. Second time i played the (shorter) Decelean war scenario. Lost but scored 25 points. I'm currently on turn 5 of my third play through. Taking my time, and the rules sequence is starting to click, my turns are starting to speed up (although still time consuming). I cut through the rules to actually see what I was going to score and lose points for and concentrated on that. Sounds obvious but with so many details you can lose site of that and it helped with learning consequences of actions. I'm now starting to try and pay attention to what the AI is about to do on their actions and mitigate/ plan ahead a bit. I'm no expert but im enjoying the ride and I'm starting to see what a great tactical game this could turn out to be. Keep going - I think you'll enjoy it alot.

      Hi there,
What threw me about Peloponnesian War was the very 'procedural' nature of it.
It's the first I've come across with that volume and structure of procedures - and I've played a fair few GMT games in the last couple of years.
After 3 full campaign games, I think I now understand 'how to play'...'how to win' is still a lonnnng way off :)
You are right though, this is definitely a game that rewards persistence.
      Thanks for watching!

A really enjoyable play through. Despite your reservations and frustrations I thought you did an admirable job & explained it very well. My copy arrived today so I plan to muddle through learning the game in the next few days and will take heart from your observations that it might not just be me being unusually thick if I struggle a little! Very well done! 😂

Wow, thanks for such a nice comment. Much appreciated and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I'm still fairly new to games like Peloponnessian War and my reservations probably stem more from my inexperience than the game itself. :-) Hope you have fun with your copy!

Excellent video! I suppose that when playing solo, we don't choose any routes for the NP side... it is totally by the rules and dice... Congratulations.

Is this the same game originally from Victory Games? Developed by Mark Herman? Looks like it, with some modifications to design.

Ok, yeah, it is. Just some slightly redesigned parts. Reading Herman's notes from a later game, Pericles, I guess this game was used for a while at the Naval War College. Pretty cool.

Yes, I believe it is. Not sure what's different though. I only played Pericles once, I long time ago. Didn't realise it was used as a study aid. Thanks for watching.

@@DiagonalMove Just some cosmetic/design differences, it looks like. Pieces look cosmetically different, so does the map and the AI charts. Same info, just different design. Different box design, as well.
The version I got recently on Ebay is from Victory Games and came with a whole separate book with historical notes and an example of a playthrough. Did this version not come with that? The rules I have actually specifically reference, often, playthrough examples. I would hope they would have included that. Makes things a lot easier when you get to some difficulties. But, like Herman says in his playthrough notes with Pericles, even with playthrough examples, you can't get to everything!

Yes, it does come with designer notes. These are both very interesting and comprehensive. There are examples etc in the rules, usual GMT quality stuff...I think I just struggled with the procedural nature of the gameplay. Not something I was used to when I first played.

what do ravaging and tactical and strategic ratings do

    • @DiagonalMove
      @DiagonalMove  3 года назад +1

Hi. I don't have the rule book handy but, if I remember correctly, the tactical rating is a combat modifier, the strategic rating affects which units 'go home' after a siege, and ravaged areas do not generate income. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

The first half of the Peloponesian war, Sparta had no navy and was limited to making annual land expeditions around Athens. This 1st phase was a defeat for Sparta. Only in the second phase of the War did Sparta begin to build a navy and allied with other powers began to asphyxiate Athens economically. In this respect, the game works better as a historical simulation than as a game. Good as history but to much procedural as a game.
