    Very informative Matt! As a newer shooter, this type of info is invaluable. I too love 1911's, but I rarely carry any of mine, not even my compact models. They are my favorite gun to shoot, and to even clean, but I don't want to have to worry about the thumb safety in a SD situation, also, 7 rounds is nice, but 13 is better! I am currently carrying a glock 23, my only glock, and am looking into m&p shield.

    One thing I would've brought up is the decocker on the Beretta 92FS. It's slide-mounted so that it can tilt the firing pin downwards, thus making it mechanically impossible to go off.

    Glock's trigger safety is only a drop safety to prevent momentum from moving the trigger. Just about anything that will directly move the trigger will also deactivate the trigger safety.

    Some agencies around the world carry pistols with an empty chamber and have trained to pull the slide as they unholster the pistol. I live in a rural area with very little crime and I carry with empty chamber, unless I carry an all metal S&W as 669, 4566, 4006 and 3913 or my PPK if I feel the .380 enough for the trip/day. I make an exception to the CZ 40 P and RAMI, that have the half cock position. Good video.

    You said you'd be caught off guard an that's why you want a double action instead of a safety. BUT, if you're caught off guard you probably forget about the heavier trigger pull, and your first shot will completely miss giving the target the chance to retaliate. Whereas if you had just a safety turned on that wouldn't be problem.

    I personally carry my XDM loaded but not cocked as it only takes a split second to do it and I practice it as part of my draw stroke. This is a compromise I'm willing to make for the added level of safety. But hey, that's just me.

    I'm surprised you don't have a 1911. I bought one on the centennial a couple years ago.
    My first centerfire handgun was a PT92 and it was a great gun but I got over the "need" for a manual safety once I got accustomed to carrying and now my primary carry is a G23 converted to 9mm.

    you have some good points. but how easy is it for me to pull up vids of people accidentally shooting themselves with these guns with no safeties? even while teaching a class on gun safety lol? it's so simple, when you're out the house take safety off, when you're in a safe environment put safety on. i don't know anyone with a gun and decent range time who can't take their safety off. you think all these 1911 lovers can't take a safety off before they have to shoot something?

    • @Treblaine
      @Treblaine 6 лет назад +1

      It's just as easy to find videos of people accidentally shooting themselves with guns that have manual-safeties. The manual-safety is only any damn good... if it's engaged. But to eliminate the risk of them accidentally forgetting to disengage the safety they train in the automatic muscle memory to disengage the safety as soon as they draw the gun. So as soon as it's out the holster it's capable of firing, so NO DAMN DIFFERENT!
      "you think all these 1911 lovers can't take a safety off before they have to shoot something?
      "
      Yes. They've done it enough times.
      OR they just make it such a routine automatic reflex to disengage the safety as a natural and inherent part of the draw, it doesn't add any safety factor. I've seen cops with 1911 pistols shoot innocent people in the neck and paralyse them because the moment they clicked the safety down the gun fired.
      The necessity of manual safeties is the make the gun drop-safe and resistant to impacts, poking and shuffling when inside a loose poorly fitting holster. Everything has changed now we have form fitting holsters that totally isolate the trigger along with internal drop safeties.

    • @Treblaine
      @Treblaine 6 лет назад +1

      @@SpencerWhetstone As I said, the manual safety can never help. If fundamentally fails to help when people break the golden rules of gun handling. Because you had to make it an "automatic reflex".
      However there is one place (and only one as far as I know) where a manual safety really adds a safety factor and that's when holstering the damn thing. It's a great practice in many armies to turn on a manual safety just for the process of holstering, that's their "automatic reflex" to put the safety on before they holster and turn the safety OFF once the pistol is holstered. This is a really great combination, even when soldiers and marines are tired, cold, stressed and shot at, they fall back on learned reflexes.
      Except one problem with that is many have a manual safety that you can't turn off once holstered. There's no need for the safety to stay on when it's in the holster.

    • @julia-6195
      @julia-6195 5 лет назад +1

      @@Treblaine If you have a hammer fired DA/SA pistol and put your thumb on the hammer when you holster, you won't have a problem with an AD because you'll be aware of anything getting snagged on the trigger. Same with a striker fire with an exposed striker indicator like the Walther PPS.

  • @NeverEnuffAmmo

    But that implies that a misplaced shot is worse than no shot at all. I'd rather have bad shot placement and run the chance that the other guy is then caught off guard when he realizes that I have a gun and am shooting at him, than pulling a gun and having nothing happen. Never mind the fact that in that situation your not going to know or feel the difference between a 5 lb trigger pull and a 12 lb trigger pull

  • @MN12Guns
    @MN12Guns 11 лет назад

    Do you like any sub DAO pistols? I think that would be my preference for CC something small and simple, no safety but a heavy DA trigger. For defensive shooting I think I would be okay with that. Obviously that wouldn't be a range pistol or anything I would want to shoot for fun. I'm only curious on your opinion, I'm Canadian I can't CC anyway! Oh and I noticed your comment on 1911s do you not want to get another? Not for CC of course but to have for the sake of it and as a range gun.

    So basically what you're saying is that when technology and design gives people a better option for self defense, they should keep using an outdated design? That doesn't make sense, thats like saying "Well using leaches on people who are sick have a history of working for thousands of years, so there's no reason to go to the hospital, and anyone who would go to the hospital doesn't know how to take care of themselves". Facts are that there are now better tools for defense on the market.

I got her comfy with my 226 & the double action first shot but the Glock just makes her nervous. I convinced her not to sell it because I know she will eventually be comfy with it but she wants something in the meantime. That's kind of a common thing with new shooters. I wasn't comfy with the Glocks when they first came out but now there is no way I would buy anything with an external safety

Thumb safeties are just an additional feature which you have to consciously remember to deactivate in a situation that you are not conscious of when it will happen. No Thumb Safeties, avoid touching the trigger if you are going to shoot. Draw, aim and fire when the surprise attacker approaches you.

    Wow, just a fantastic video. Extremely informative without being condescending to noobs. So many "experts" on RUclips have opinions and beliefs that get worked into each of their videos. That's fine, I get it, its their video. It just gets old when you are just looking for information. When I am looking for information on a certain gun, and I click on a video about that gun, I don't want or need to hear about how much someone thinks that safeties are for pussies.
    Thank you for all of the great info, previous to seeing this video I was big on only buying guns that had safeties...but you present strong points on why a decocker makes more sense but retains a solid level of safety.
    Thanks!!! cant wait to see more from you.

    • @johnyoungs7453

      There's also a big difference in "decockers", as well. There are videos online telling people how, for example, to deactivate the decocker on their Beretta PX4 Storm pistol..! Yes, it'll still "decock" when you push the lever down, but if you've "fixed" it so that it pops back up when you release it, the gun can fire automatically after that. The decocker on Beretta handguns IS "a safety" - as the gun comes from the factory. Deactivate the manual return aspect of the lever - guess what..?? You've now essentially turned your Beretta into "a Glock"...!! Removing or deactivating a safety - even something like the grip safety on a 1911 pistol is stupid..!! Food for thought..!! I've been carrying concealed since 1978 (do the math..!) and I know what I'm talking about..!

    lol I agree but I have seen lots of new shooters that want a safety. I am going through that with my partner right now. She wants something with a safety. I got her to the point where she is ok with a DA but if she was just going out to buy something she would buy something with an additional external safety. I hate to say it but there is probably a pretty good market for manual safeties.
