Another advantage of the Atmos AG50 is, it gives you a GREAT post-Camino pack. Do you think you'll bring the top lid with you on the Camino. Personally, I love top lids, especially for those (hopefully) never use items like First aid, water filter, toilet paper/trowel, the pack it and forget it items. It will interesting to see how your field test goes, maybe you finally found your pack.
Yup! I don't know about the lid. I prefer a sleeker pack and I hate having to flop them over to get into the bag (especially when loaded down with the kinds of things I'd put in them). Plus this lid is HUGE! I'd estimate 10L hahaha. I wish it could become a fanny pack or something. But that stuff has to go somewhere so . . . ?

I wonder if you could take a shoulder strap and attached connection points to turn it into a shoulder bag, for valuables, for around town after checking into the albergue. Hi Doug, I don't know either how a Teddy Bear feels like, but I know the perfect volume for a Camino backpack! I just finished the Camino Portugues last week and I used the 2022 Osprey Exos 38. This was exactly, what I needed to carry all my stuff (even with some liters to spare). I own the previous Exos 38 as well, but it lacks the hip belt pockets which I need for my phone and my wallet. By the way - did you make any camino so far? If yes, which one?
Ha! The Exos was literally the very first pack i got for my Camino back in 2019 when I started the channel. :) It turned out to be the wrong size and once I got it sold, I went on a backpack odyssey that led me to the Atmos for it's unreal level of comfort. 3 years later I kind of laugh at how much overkill it would have been - honestly the Exos was probably perfect LOL! I did not do the Camino because Covid shutdowns went into effect about 3 weeks before my travel date and for various reasons I haven't been able to make plans to return. Maybe in a few years. :)
@@BackcountryPilgrim I went on my first camino back in 2018. I chose the Camino del Norte (525 miles long), because the Francés was too crowded then. I went through such a backpack odyssey as well, not only for a camino, but also for multiple day hiking here in Germany. Among others, I tested the Atmos AG 65, which turned out to be too big for my purposes. Hopefully you can make it sooner or later to go on a pilgrimage in Spain! I am planning to go on the Camino Primitivo next year. All the best for you!
I bought the Atmos 65, kind of wish I went for this 50 now after watching this. The extra pockets on the 65 I find I’m not really using. A bit overkill I guess. Still in the future I may change to this size for the weight loss mainly. Nice review though. :)
Yeah that's a big ole' pack! Extra pockets can be a temptation to overpack too. But hey, maybe you'll go on a week+ trip sometime and appreciate the extra volume! :)
It's pretty hard to beat! If I ever went full UL then I could see switching it up but until then the Atmos suspension puts it on top for me. I'm hoping to do some PCT and JMT out here when it warms up a bit myself. Thanks for the response!
@@BackcountryPilgrim I hope they fixed the sliding/oversized hip belt; Thinner hikers struggled to shorten the belt enough with the 2017 model. I ended up stitching the adjustable velcro part into place and it worked fine - and I am not thin!
Thoughts on the Osprey Ariel 65 for the camino? I've had it for years and hate to get a new pack...but it's massive. :( Like the Atmos, it's basically a 55L + 10L top. I'm gonna be strict and limit myself to 12-15lbs, but am I kidding myself? I love that the suspension makes it feel lighter, but I do wonder if the pack is actually made for a heavier weight and it's not worth it for 12-15lbs.
It's definitely made for more weight. Like, a LOT more haha. Even if you got to 15 lbs, 1/3 of it would be backpack haha. However it's not all about weight, you've also got to think about volume and carry style. So if your gear is big, awkward, or you want most of it to stay inside, then a 65l isn't necessarily a bad idea. Having said that, you might have a look at the 50l version or see how a Sirrus 36 fits you. The suspension is similar and it's probably a better size. During your quest for a great bag have you looked at the Gregory Paragon 48? I’ve been between the Atmos 50 and the Paragon 48 but not sure which to go with.
I might have during my REI day haha but I don't think so. Once I put the Atmos on it was pretty much game over. :) The Optic was my runner up though. What's the Paragon like?
I jsut came back from a winter camino with lots of additional warm clothing, a sleeping bag, my CPAP machine and even my laptop. It came in at a huge 25lbs but the Atmos AG was so much more comfortable versus my summer pack (16lbs). Definitely go for the ATMOS AG.
I feel your pain! :) I have not tried to fit a BV500 in it. I've seen one go in an Exos 58 which is 16"x14.6" and the Atmos 50 is 15"x15.4". So my guess is it probably would fit horizontally, but it might be real tight. I'd call REI or someone and ask the salesperson to try it!
I never had that problem but I know some people have. Apparently the high tension areas where the frame and pack material overlap can rub on each other to the point that they start to slip and the snap you hear is the tension briefly breaking. You could contact Osprey as I have heard it is covered under the lifetime warranty. I believe thay whay they do is coat the frame in a spray that smooths out the friction. There are also a couple videos showing how others have DIY'd a fix. Hope that helps!

Well right when I got started backpacking this year I took it on one trip and then covid hit. It was good though, you can see the video (First Solo Backpacking Trip). I'm happy with it but would like to get lighter overall once I get some gear dialed in. :)
how tall are you? waist size? leaning toward this pack for upcoming section hike but, because of covid, i can't get my hands on the pack. don't care about weight. just wanna get idea of dimensions. thanks for content.
5'10" (19" torso) about 35" waist. The pack has a lot of adjustment possibilities so I wouldn't be too concerned about anything but your torso measurement. Amazon is good about returns and REI is even better so I'd get one and try it out with weight while you have time to swap it out if it's a no go. Happy hiking!

I'm starting to plan a Camino trip in 2021. I have a beginning packing list (using LIGHTERPACK.COM) starting with my ultralight hiking list. At about 8 to 10lb base weight with more clothes but no "camping" gear. Note my normal base weight is 7 to 8 lbs. Thinking of using my ZPACK Nero I've used on section hikes of AT and CDT and numerous NM, TX and AK multi day trips - love it. What do you think? After ditching tent, sleeping quilt and pad, food bag I can't see filling it. Oh Osprey look at the Osprey Levity 45 .
That's great! The adjustment you'll have to make to your thinking is that you won't be able to really hiker trash it out there (you're expected to shower daily, change clothes in the evenings, and wash them for the next day haha). So ironically even though you're not backpacking and can leave a ton of that gear behind, you need extra clothes, shower shoes, deodorant, soap, and other things to stay in albergues! That stuff may outweigh your UL camping gear real fast. But under 10lbs bw is solid for the Camino. I think the Nero would be perfect. I tried the Levity - I'm sure it's fine, I didn't trust its onion-thin skin haha. I have since moved on from the Atmos a a Camino pack (mostly because it's too big for carry-on and I won't check bags on a trip like this). If I ever get to do the Camino, I'll have a 40L lightweight pack like my Zerk 40 or maybe the Durston Drop 40L (which is on it's way!).

I love my Atmos 50! I honestly don’t see how they can improve upon it. I don’t mind the weight when it’s so comfortable and well built.

This is the only pack I've ever used and think you'll enjoy it too. I've been using it without the lid ever since my AT section hike in 2017.

Comfort is king it's the only thing I look at when buying a pack. A 1.5lb pack with 30lbs isn't as comfortable as a 4.5lb pack with 33lbs.
Agreed! If lightweight backpacking is a system, you can't just change the pack. :)
