  • Enough people have asked about my personal DR that I thought I’d make a video.
    Then I forgot I can’t edit anything except on my phone.
    Then I realized that I called the caliper carrier/bracket a sprocket carrier.
    This is not a good idea.

      Thanks Geordie, I’m planning on redoing the whole thing later this year.
      18” rear rim/wheel, maybe Ohlins front end or maybe off an RMX, and possibly whole new nav tower depending on how much work I get in the near future 😅.
      Enjoy the fairing, and I’ll see you out there sometime.

      Sorry it’s taken so long to reply, I’m hopeless at this and can’t work out how to switch on the thing that lets me know when people comment.
      If you look up either Jebtech engineering or Yenkro fairing online you’ll see Joe’s website. Depending on where you are, Procycle stock the fairings, but I’m not sure about what they are doing now with the new design.

      I'm pretty sure they have completely different mountings.
      but...
      Have a look at the DR rear fender kit from ProCycle. It's the right width and you would be able to get it to fit without too many problems I think. It's a flatter, more modern design and I like the look of it. It looks a bit like an old enduro rear end.

    Some good info thank you. I wish Yenkroe made Rally Tower that would fit the 20 liter tank. What is the brand and size of your rear tire? Also what is your front suspension off of? Cheers.

      Man, I’m sorry it’s taken so long to reply, I only use my phone for all this stuff and I can’t work out how to switch on the bit that tells me people have commented.
      So joe is doing a new version of the fairing kit now, completely different to my old one. It will work with pretty much any tank, and has much better lighting. It’s lighter, stronger, and based of ideas from the factory rally bikes, but done better as far as we the plebeian masses are concerned.
      Have a look for Jebtech and Yenkro online and you’ll soon find him.
      I’d link but I’m just as likely to delete the whole comment as copy an address so I won’t take the chance.
      You’ll find him though , I have something resembling faith in you.

      And I forgot to answer the other two questions.
      I suck at this.
      Rear tyre was a Metzler enduro 3 I think. It’s very similar to the Mitas e-07, but not as slippery on a wet road. It’s also not as durable, but that’s the trade off. I was using it because I got it really cheap.
      Front end is from a WR450.
      Any of the YZ/WR 250-450’s fit really easily up until about 2016 or so. Maybe 2018. Something like that.
      The RM forks fit really easily as well.
      I used the WRs because that’s what I had in the workshop when I lunched the DRz forks I’d been using.
      Next plan is to go 18” rear rim and maybe Ohlins off a TM or possibly RMX 450.
      It’s easiest if you do the whole front, wheel, caliper, lock stock the lot. Saves having to make spacers and axles and whatever, which I can do but is a pain in my ass.
      And because I forgot again, the rear tyre is 130/90-17. The stock 120/90 is stupid and 130’s fit better.
      Hopefully all this helps.
      If you’re Brisbane area, just stop by Skinny’s Garage and have a chat.

    Good stuff. Did you fit a second petcock to the tank? Thinking of adding one to mine. Subbed 👍

    • @teekaymotomechanical
      @teekaymotomechanical  2 года назад +1

      Nope. I’ve kept with just the one. I’ve never really had a problem with not getting all the fuel. I might do it at some point, but for now it’s been fine. And once I plumb in the rear tanks I’m thinking of setting it so that the rear fills the main tank again. That way I can keep the weight centered a bit b

    Maybe it's just me, but USD $1,300+ for a fairing seems like a lot!

    • @teekaymotomechanical
      @teekaymotomechanical  Год назад +1

      That depends what you want to do. This is an excellent fairing for long-distance off-road riding that may take a few (or a lot of) hits. the one on the DRz490 that my boss has took a very high-speed semi cartwheel at the Condo 750 this year during the race and was pushed back into shape in a couple of minutes, the boss took longer to heal. And mines gone down a lot because I'm a complete muppet.
      My bike is built up around going for long rides that include long transport sections on outback roads, desert, tight single track, open twin track and fire roads, pretty much anything that Australia can throw at it. I haven't found another bike that can do it, considering the service intervals and reliability of the DR. The DRz comes very close, but only if you build it with a 440 and wide ratio gearbox. And then you still need the fairing. The KLR is way too heavy and not as good off road so you have to spend a lot on suspension. All the orange bikes are at least twice the price, and if they have a fairing, too big and too complicated for me. The 690 is also twice the price, needs much more maintenance, is generally more fragile (spoken as an Orange level factory trained KTM mechanic) and would still need the fairing to be the same as my DR.
      These fairings are some of the best I've worked with. Aurora make fantastic gear, that is super spendy, and not for a DR. Nomad is a bit cheaper, not as good a quality as Aurora and also not for DRs. The Yenkro kit is the same (if not better) quality as Aurora, much better than anything else, cheaper, and Joe lives an hour up the road and is always ready to chat bikes. He's constantly modifying , adapting and refining the designs so his stuff just keeps getting better and better.
      Sorry for the long reply, but it's a question/comment I get a lot. "You could have bought a (insert bike here) for what you've spent on yours!"
      Mine owes me $14k all in on a brand new 0 klm DR. A T7 is $20k stock, a World Raid is $26K for the base model, an 890 is $26+. And all of those have problems I'd need to sort out with money before they were what I wanted.
      But offer me a KOVE 450 Dakar spec for $16k and watch how quickly I bought one :)

    • @ronsexton3685
      @ronsexton3685 Год назад

      @@teekaymotomechanical Thanks for that.
      Some say the DR has unfavorable vibration. But most don't mention it. Your opinion on this?
      The KOVE? It is lighter but probably not as good on the road. Everything is a compromise in the end. :)

    • @teekaymotomechanical
      @teekaymotomechanical  Год назад

      I think the people who mention the vibration have either come from 4 cylinder road bikes, or they've never ridden a KLR :)
      ok, seriously though. The main times I've spoken about vibration with customers has been because of vibration coming through the bars and making they're hands numb. and it's almost always after they have fitted some sort of aftermarket hand guards.
      most cheap handguards you need to pull the bar end weights off to fit. Even really good quality enduro style guards like the BarkBuster Ego are the wrong shape.
      I use BarkBuster VPS (or Jet if you want to save a few dollars) with the bar end weights in place, and i run the BarkBuster external weights as well. it completely dampens the vibration through the bars, and I am running a WR front end with rigid bar mounts.
      I've also found that the 790 kit from ProCycle actually vibrates slightly less in the frame. The size difference for the bigger piston just seems to be a slightly better match.
      I keep making really llong replies. I should probablyl learn a little brevity at some point.

      The fairing is from Yenkro, Joe Brazier makes them.

      You can find his stuff at yenkro.com/products/suzuki-dr650-gen-2-fairing-kit.

    Range?

    • @teekaymotomechanical
      @teekaymotomechanical  Год назад +2

      So sorry I didn’t see your question.
      The tanks are about 8-10 liters per side. The exhaust side is fuel, giving me around 34 liters in total. So that’s around 650-700 klm of gentle cruising, or around 350 klm of being angry in sand. Maybe a bit less. The other tank is lined with a food grade epoxy and holds 8-10 liters of water.
      I don’t have either side plumbed in at the moment, I’m just using them as really good pannier racks.
