I've been using Reaper for a month now and the guys behind it are really doing wonders, so I'll pay for the subscription. Absolutely deserved and I hope many of you will do it even if it's possible to use it for free.
@@IsHeHigh Well, unless things have changed, it is actually a subscription - based on whole version number - from the Reaper site: "A new license includes free upgrades through REAPER version 8.99" (based on it being at version 7.22 as of this writing). I've licensed Reaper for about a total of 14 years (on and off), that $60 has seemed to last through 2 to 4 years for each two whole-number versions. For that period, I think I've paid the $60 maybe three times (considering I took a four or five year hiatus at one point). I'm now about halfway through my third license, as I renewed at 6.xx, and we're now at 7.22, and my license will need renewal at version 8.0 - probably a year from now, but they could jump to 8.0 at anytime if they feel any given update is significant enough.
Thanks Kenny. This is a massive upgrade. I loved reaper before but this is great The takes, prior to 7, were always a difficult thing to navigate. I came from Sonar before switching to reaper and they had take lanes. That is one thing I missed.
Thank God! Been transitioning from pro tools to reaper for the last year and the old takes workflow in reaper was my biggest hangup. Now I'm much more comfortable using reaper for paying clients
I am so glad they added this feature. I have been doing this with duplicate tracks because the takes just didnt fit my workflow. Thanks for the video explanation, Kenny!
Yup, this is huge. And not only dupe tracks but having to nest tracks if you don't want to have to duplicate any FX, routing, etc. Quickly got complicated.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. Sooooooooooo happy this feature is now here. Will make recording and comping fun again. One of the few things I missed from pro tools, and yet here it is now 🙌🙌🙌🙌
Thank you! I finally updated to the recent version and the new take lane workflow threw me way off. This video helped me get back on track quickly. I honestly like this new workflow so much better. Safer and more efficient.
What I love about Kenny's videos is they're perfect for learning as you need it. I saw this video get published a few months ago but didn't watch it then as I didn't need this particular skill right then. But his content is so concise and well organised that I know I can just quickly learn something on the fly, in the middle of a session if need be and I have trust in that. Nice one Kenny.
Up until now I tracked drums for clients in pro tools due to the playlist feature (even though I prefer Reaper for almost everything else). This is a huge upgrade for me and basically means I can use PT even less!
As always, I love your concise, perfectly paced videos. One suggestion: put in a text pop up of the Action that's taking placed when a keyboard shortcut is being demonstrated (T in this video). Many of us have long ago mangled up our key commands to where anything new has to be reassigned in the Actions menu, and sometimes finding the action can be difficult without the exact wording.
As a long-time PT user who ditched his HDX rig for Reaper, you've been, and continue to be, a godsend in helping me through the rough part of the learning curve. It's been amazing discovering how far ahead Reaper is from PT in terms of customization. It really let's us set up our DAW the way that works best for each of us. By far, the best value in the world of full-featured DAWs and my system almost never crashes whereas PT gave me constant error codes even with their top of the line system.
This is a very welcome update. I always felt with the track takes that it was a little bit messy because some parts of the song might have 4 layers of takes, and the next part had just one. Now there is a clear structure how to record into lanes, and then you can comp it into a ready product. Very, very nice. Can't wait to see what else is new - there seems to be updates to clip gain, etc. a lot of useful stuff.
so far, this was one of the few parts of the program that was much better solved in cubase. At least the ones I really notice in everyday life. Very good. because in most respects I feel I'm in the best hands with reaper.
In the old 'takes' system, if I recorded takes of differing lenghts in midi, there would be an annoying click where the shorter takes finished. I would have to later join up midi notes to get rid of the click. This doesn't seem to happen with lanes. So it looks like the one thing I didn't like about Reaper has been sorted. Many thanks. And as ever, a great video KG.
0:56 "... set the input where my Mic ist plugged in ... not this Myk ... but this Mic!" LOL Hahahaha! 😂Very good! I was waiting for your response since I've seen the video from "Let's Talk About Reaper"! And I am pretty sure this is just friendly badging. 🙂 Beside that: Once again ... very useful video! ❤
Some good stuff in Reaper 7 and great explanation as always! The fun starts when you record takes into item-lanes... Imagine 8 tracks of backing vocals, each with their own takes, spread over 8 fixed item lanes that are panned using the items and playing all at once (layer items). In one track. :D
I agree, this is a cool feature. For what it's worth, you could achieve a similar "choir in one track" mechanism in the old take mode by setting "play all takes" in the item settings and using take pan envelopes to set the panning.
I'm used the default Theme 6 on Reaper 7 . I like this design. But because arrived the new "Lane technology", I begin working in the default Theme 7. I don`t ike this. Then I tried to return to Theme 6 and turn up "Lane technology" - everything works in Theme 6 on Reaper 7! Thanks!
I didn't even realize how much I didn't like the takes way of doing things😂. This was a great update, I only wish they had lines more visible for knowing ur in comping mode. But this was a much needed feature.
Holy moly! This makes the whole "mh, which take do I use now?" process so much easier. Great Feature! Just from watching, there is one thing I feel might be a little fiddely: the bottom area with the arrows where you can toggle between comped sections seems to be little small. I think increasing its height and the arrow size a little bit would make pressing the arrows more comfortable.
Nice shout out to Mky! I think I had some mouse modifiers that were preventing me from using swipe editing. I went through and got rid of modifiers I wasn't using and it works fine now. Also, someone on the Reaper Forums recommended that I try running some of the Set Arrange View Override scripts, but I don't know really what they do or if they had an effect. At the end of the day this is a great new feature, and you covered it really well (even if Myk got to it first?)
Great video, but question, can U use different effects in the comping track? Would be great to add reverb or a chorus plugin on one of these sections? Thanks Kenny again.
@@REAPERMania ah yes, that's also possible, I'm going to use this a lot from now on, I started yesterday another project, so let's make this a great one, thanks again.
Great explanation - been looking forward to this one! A question though... What's the best way to continue recording on the same track and do other comps, further along the timeline? My reference here is logic pro, where each comp area can be collapsed individually on the same track. In reaper, it seems like if you did another few comps/multiple takes for different parts of the song in the same track you'll end up with one long list of all the different lanes?
Thanks Kenny. This behavior was really throwing me off when I was double tracking guitars. I have always created a new item in the same lane and set the item properties to always mix. That way I have a single track with multiple guitar performances. I also do that with vocal harmonies, so I have a complete harmonic chord on each track. Now I have a much better understanding of how this works. If you use the Control key you can select multiple lanes and have them all play together.
Only one person asked what song this is (who is actually singing it?). Is it a secret, upcoming release? I would like to know. She has a beautiful voice.
I'm new to REAPER and your channel. Subscribed! Kenny you're a great explainer. I appreciate all the details and thorough demonstration. I'll definitely pay for the license. Amazing DAW. Do you have any comparison videos of REAPER with other popular DAWs, Logic, Qbase etc?
Is there a way of doing "recording loops" with this? A couple of seconds play time before the record kicks in, so I don't need to push buttons between takes and stay in the flow. Thx and keep up the great work!
I'm sure you're well aware but Reaper already did this (but in a much more basic way) I would create a time selection and turn the toggle repeat to ON and then record myself playing the same section aver and over (maybe 5 times) When you expand the track you can see all 5 takes (lanes) and then you split and select the parts you like to play the best of the 5 takes. Should be interesting to see all the advanced options this new version brings. Love your work Kenny, you've taught me soo much. Couldn't have done it without ya. 😊👍
Wouldn't you still have to drag the takes to one track so they're not all on separate takes. Or would you glue it all together after the edit? Either way I think I like this method better! Trying it tonight for some vocal tracking
@@LordAlwyn Sometimes I glue it or I render it to a new track and mute the original. They are separate lanes within the one track (so to speak). After splitting it into sections you click on the lane in each section and that's the lane that will play. I also click and drag on the splits to create a cross fade so it transitions smoother. When you minimize the height of the track it will revert to one take but will be multi coloured showing which take (lane) is playing. You'll understand once you do it. Good Luck 👍
Great features, well explained! Lanes and comping will simplify what I've already been doing to comp from multiple takes. Question for you: can you have more than one comp lane for a given set of item lanes? For example, if you have 6 takes of a vocal that you want to comp down to two (double-tracked) vocals. Thanks!
that looks incredibly powerful. Kenny is it possible to retroactively apply lanes to older projects that were recorded in pre-7 versions of Reaper, using takes? Yeah Myk mentioned beating you to the punch in his video haha...I've been holding off upgrading untill i have a good understanding..this was well explained, along with Myk's vid. looking forward to seeing all the upcoming series.
Hello j !! Thanks for your videos we appreciate you!! I am reaper user. I will like to ask you a question, why is auto tune pro does not working in reaper? Not only me though a lot of reaper users have this same problem. Do you have any idea why?
Can I monitor/loop back the previous lanes while recording in a new lane? I want to be able to hear the previous comp while recording a new one. Useful for layering voices.
i love it when Kenny sings for us ❤
At least "Kenny's singing" was better than Myk's in his video🤣👊
