Dude, that thing sounds amazing! You can't go wrong with a 390. That engine will never die on you.
I was very surprised by the performance for the dollar I got out of that engine.. and it sounds cool as hell! Thanks!
Good work, and those of us where things don't always work the first time appreciate your total honesty.
agreed... makes it more interesting for sure. I didn't want to miss it throwing a piston out the side of the block!
Wired 180 out.
Makes me miss my old 390 days back in the sixties and seventies. We had everything we needed and gas wasn't made from lawnmower grass
Starting to build a 360 75 f 100 model bone stock one owner, don't have clue , first time build, have it, an 80 model f100 , an just purchased a 74 f100, I appreciate the time you put into this and explained what I understand, but not confidently have done on this level, thank you bud,
Nothing better than the sound of an old Ford V-8. Well done, sir.
Awesome job! This mopar man is absolutely loving this build. I was thinking the distributor must be 180 out about the same time you said it. Anybody that claims they never put one in 180 out or mixed up a couple of plug wires is either lying or never turned a wrench in the first place.
Surprisingly I never have. The 351 that I built years ago with EFI and almost all used parts that I ordered off Ebay started on the very first crank with fuel. Main reason the Ford TFI distributor on EEC 4 cars. The module physically will not let you turn it but a few degrees back and forth because the cooling outlets block it. Long as you have the crank on 0 and know that #1 is up front, it's almost impossible to screw it up. I drove that car for months without ever putting a timing light to it (base timing is 10 degrees, once you have it in properly, you can kinda tell how far to turn it, again it can only turn so far with the TFI) The ONLY engines I have R&Rd distributors on were Ford EFI smallblocks though
I bought a $500 truck with a 360 in it that the guy couldn't get to run and I swear I even checked top dead center and swear I felt it pushing air out like it was on the compression stroke and STILL didn't find out the distributor was 180 off until I pulled it out and turned it as a last ditch effort and sure enough it was 180 off.
Watch the earlier video , you might have figured 180 off then already .
Or they are good mechanics. Not everyone on earth are the same. Plug wires are the simplest thing on the vehicle to change. They don't put the firing order on old cars and trucks for nothing. Look at your intake. I drive a 1985 ford f150. Only vehicle I own. Never let any human touch it. Do it myself. 351w.
@@vendediesel change it to chevy HEI distributor. I did. All chevy HEI caps work with it.
Beautiful work. Love the way you didn't edit out your mistake with the distributor, which everyone else would've! 390 with a three-on-the-tree. Love it. 2nd gear big fun
I give you lots of Credit for sticking with the Entire project, So many people start a project then give up on it half way through.... Nice job and nice truck.
Todd bob : the hardest part of any large project is the last half. Good job!
My dad and I fixed up a 78 with a 390. When we first got it we had to stop at service stations to check the gas and fill up with oil. Ran strong but dang it burnt some oil. Wasn’t long we had it right. Loved that old truck. Miss you pops.
Thanks for sharing and bringing back good memories!
Dang man, you’re making me want to turn my 360 into a pepped up 390 ASAP. Sounds wicked, too. Good work!
Use the 390 crank and rods and keep your 360 pistons, most 360s had flat tops. The 360 rods are wimpy when compared to the 390 rods. It'll Put your compression between 10-10.5:1 just like a factory 390 4V
I'm having it done to mine right now
I like to see someone having fun with something the have had there own hands involved in the making of it. Nice build.
I’m just a dude that tries to work on his car. And I really enjoyed watching this series. I felt happy for you when you finally got it started!
Great job, it sounds so damn stout! Love to see another 3 on the Tree back on the road.
Good to see u left the 3 speed on the column.. and that motor though!!! The 390 is my favorite Ford engine made. There power houses.
When you feed her the onions she whails! Great job! Sounds wicked.
Five-O cox someone watches VGG.
Well I’ll be dipp’d
Fwiw Crower made a bunch of great cams for those ford trucks, most had campers on them back in the day.
Nobody I knew even in the early 70s didnt have a Crower stick in them.
Sweet sound of a 390, eargasm.
As a life long Ford guy(im 61 yrs old) this is one of the coolest video build collections Ive ever Seen. It is VERY realistic and thats why. Ive been there and done that. Love how he hangs in there and never gives up. This is way harder then he makes it look. One mistake and you flush thousands of dollars in time and money down the toilet.
I am a 74 soon to be 75 FORD GUY! I have been thinking of doing a you tube video of the restoration of my 1969 one owner Ford F250 Crew Cab Short Box truck! Not a dent in it but a whole lot of rust in several areas. Parked it 10 years ago and been driving my 70 F250 Sport Custom. It's my Daily Now the other was. Daily for over 40 years. Perhaps you can lmk if youvthink it's worth the video series
Great job! Your patience is incredible!
Gotta love those old vehicles, the whole thing rocks when you give em gas.
hahaha it makes them look impressive, maybe its just the worn out suspension.. either way
@@330_garage3 My old '77 F150 does it too, I think most older vehicles did that.
Mistakes are easily done, it just happens after you've just done a thousand other things, at least you didn't panic and went over stuff. Sounds great 👍🇬🇧
Dude awesome job! Thanks for sharing. Theres nothing like hearing the motor for the first time after fresh rebuild!
5:40 any of us who have wrenched long enough have done this one!
The smile on your face when you gave her some gas lol I love it
Its gonna keep the smile on your face for good while.
Excellent! Can't wait to see the rest of the evolution of the truck.
Thank s for the motivation to get my 73 back on the road again. Love your vids
Sounds pretty darn good! Good work! Looking forward to more vids!
I've got a 360 in my 72', maybe in a couple years... Great vid.
What a beast that truck is. Great job
Nice! Love it when a Ford motor is painted Ford blue instead of all chromed out
Same here! The understated engines that perform well and sound healthy, make me all excited haha
I learned about 180 in 180 out with my father back in the early 80s when he was rebuilding a 351 w in our 77 econoline. yes brings back memories. Great diagnosis.. but you knew that. Great job.
Right on man! Glad to see this beaut running up and down the road. That trucks got plenty of power already can’t imagine what she’ll do if you provide any other upgrades.
Great Job on the rebuild. It looks and sounds great.
Glad to see you got it running but it made me miss all the old bump sides I use to have. I've got to find another one.
Kudos for posting this video... we've all been there.
OMG that truck runs...soo good and looks amazing ..keep that patina!!!
Sounds awesome. Great job!
Nice work! 390 is a great engine.
Excellent vid. Love the low/midrange torque of the 390.
YESS!!!!! That is awesome! Well done! Love it! And yes, I can hear that came and it certainly is alot more healthy sounding that i anticipated from that profile. As for your valvecover gaskets, Stick with the cork/rubber, use the 3M Super Weatherstrip Adhesive aka yellow snot and only need to glue to the valve cover side. Make sure the flanges of the VC are straight and no indentions around the bolt holes. Don't overtighten, usually hand tight with a nut driver is all that's necessary (or it splits the gasket). Have several FEs with lotsa miles on them... and I'm a guy that likes to keep em dry and clean. Good job man! Happy for ya!
Sounds wonderful! Nice one.
Love the sound of a 390
Sounds amazing, excellent job man! *art*
Nice job , keep up the good work! 💙 BlueOval
I love these old FE engines. Built many of them over the years. Never had a customer bitch about their power after the build. I knew it was 180 out after the crank and pop. lol, Napa has the best weatherstrip adhesive. Tell them what you want it for.
Fine tuning makes a world of diff. I thought my old GMC truck was doing OK until a friend came over and set the timing and adjusted the carberator. Woke that 283 v8 up like I never would have thought possible.
Good job friend new engine long time men power awesome video keep up the good work bless you
You make what your doing simple to understand ...thanks
I appreciate that!
It sounds incredible
Good work! Nice truck!
Kool video, and cool to see a young man with the interest in a vintage ride to do all the work you are doing to it. As I have a 1966 ford f100 that I'm going to restore and also rebuild a 390 for it. I would like to see a dyno on the motor after the rebuild.
Great job with truck. Awesome videos .
Made me smile ! thanks
Very cool! Glad to see I'm not the only one who's struggled with that same thing. Lol.
Loving this series, Wish i never sold my 1960 F250 now
Do not worry we have all done it. My galaxie 500 xl has a 390 and my F100 has 302 so I can sympathize having done the same upgrades.Keep going and you will a cool ride with all the work you have done. The only thing we all have to deal with is the bills for all the goodies.
I’ve got a 390 in my ‘72 and it RIPS!!
DAMN she's a BEAST!
Lol! I call myself names also. I have a 72 with a 390 and a c6. Had it over 20 years and it still runs great. Hard to kill these old fords. I also have a 74 with a 390 and front disks but it needs a little TLC. Runs tho lol. Great job like watching your videos because I can directly relate
there is away to set that timing almost exactly perfect prior to the break-in. It's a great feeling hitting that key the first time and it fires right up without guessing where the timing is.
Quick! Very nice!
Sounds really good
Nice job on the FE, your an FE expert now. You will have a bunch of FE guys dropping off 390's at your house.
That engine sounds like a beast
Haha YES! Im grinning ear to ear right now! That’s things meaner than I was expecting it to be! Would have liked to see your work on the exhaust. That interior is going to be a blast to spruce up. So what are the plans from here? New gauges to replace that hideous dash bezel... disk brakes...? I’ve got the same truck, even the same color, and my 360 is old, tired and leaky. I can’t hardly wait to dig in and follow your lead on this! Very pleased to see that it was all worth it!
$2,227 and you got it! Wish I had a manual in my truck to do the clutch kick... Got a video of my f100 with 390 on my channel.
I videoed the exhaust fabrication. Should have that video posted this week.
Sounds great im going to have to change all the plugs wires and distributor on my 81 ford
I dig the unicycle. Oh and great turnout on the motor.
hell yeah bro!! sounded so good when you got on it in the driveway!! also what state are you in? your neighborhood looks cool! cool build bud
The distributor was off by 180 deg because there's two TDCs, one compression, and the other exhaust. Old trick is to stuff a paper towel into the spark plug hole and rotate the engine. At TDC compression, the paper towel will shoot out.
I did a 390 FE with headers and 2V carb, C6. All stock except the zero decking 390 conversion and the headers/dual exhaust. That thing would spin the tires like crazy. TONS of torque. Did a 428 FE with heavy mods for a F250 HighBoy and it's just unreal torque. The FE is a fun motor, tons for torque.
I have been super impressed by this old motor! It starts and runs very well, sounds great, and moves this old truck along really well!
Sounds peppy..you got a new sub today..👍
You have that sounding perfect.
Mister nice job ! Be careful on the timeing and watch your arm near the fan. But yeah nice job. She's sweet !
I've got a 390 with the typical fe crack, and a 360 with a good block. I need to get goin on this.
Nice job brother
Incredible work man! Thanks for being honest about your shortcomings too.
So what mufflers do you have on there. I would like something not too loud that still sounds nice for my 390.
Sounds good!
You should be able to set your timing mark at the initial advance point. Drop in the distributor and move the mechanic advance to see when you have spark. This works with points and can get you within 1/2°. With electronic you should line up the trigger with the relucter ring.
Those 390s sound very good once you give them a decent rebuild.
Damn it sound so good
I've done 180 on the distributor I've also switched the plug wires up too lol
Holy hell! What NOT to do with a fresh engine. I guess this dude never heard of a "break in period" ! Rev it to the moon with a burnout ! I will have to say, its a great way to test the oiling system, bearings and cylinder walls, rings etc. I have a 240 6 in my f100 that can do burnouts too with 125K on the odom. No weight in the back end. I dont know of any engine rebuilder that recommends winding them up right out of the box, break in by taking it easy , I think Ford even put in the handbooks , easy does it for the first 500 miles. Even Yates breaks them in easy on the dyno.
The cam card that came with your cam should tell you what initial timing it should like. Then use a vacuum gauge to set the carb. Plug it in to ported vacuum, then lower the idle speed screw till you just about lose all vacuum. Then hook it to the manifold vacuum port, and adjust till you get a smooth vacuum reading
Cool same grill I’ve got on my 72 f250
If you want to get rid of the bell crank doohickey for the throttle linkage, you can use the linkage from a 73-79 F series/78-79 Bronco. It has a swivel stud that attaches to the carb and an adjustable rod & clip that attaches directly to the pedal assy. You probably want to swap the cork valve cover gaskets for "rubber" ones. Also, use a block of wood & the edge of a bench to straighten the valve cover lips.
You should be able to tune the mechanical advance just like a GM HEI unit.
Nice..Very Nice..She sounds healthy.
I am a chevy guy but I enjoyed your 390 video it's good to see something else besides L.S engines. It would be cool to build a wicked 390 torque monster to take on the chevy L.S motors.
Three on the Tree, I love it!!
Nothing like the sound of a camed up 390 ford!!
Its always rewarding to turn the key and hear it fire up, its puts a smile on everyone's face!
That T intake got some torque!
If you add pwr steering and brakes I would enjoy seeing that. Great build
I have a 67 f250 6cyl that I would like to cut down to a swb
Used Fel-Pro blues for my 302 valve covers, no sealant nothing, its amazing will never go back to cork. Still catching up on your videos so not sure if you've made the switch or fix but definitely have had good experience with them
That’s badass three on a tree with a 390
Just started a 390 a couple weeks ago. It was 180 out. I just moved all the plug wires around 180 haha to hell with pulling the distributor… but I was only seeing if it would run I want sure she would
Looks good! Get you a floor shifter and fabricate some traction bars.
The old tape in the fan scared me a bit hahaha
What a nice ride!!!! It runs good!!!! Just set your timing right, put some gasoline in the carburetor, and than that will make it start!!!!
Run great 👍
Very nice build. Sounds great 6 speed transmission next ? Or keeping it stock
How nice does it sound! Turned out great. What cam did u put in it ? 👍
