This is definitely one of the most interesting DYK videos I've ever watched.
I feel like no one really gives the respect the Halo series like they should. I think it's because it's by Microsoft.
343 killed it off...
+SilverSpark Rants I respected the Halo series till Guardians fucked over the single player AND had microtransactions. .-.
+Winston Poptart rip reach was the last good one, and none of the games are on pc rip rip rip
I think 343 did an amazing job but Halo 5 has issues.
+redlol123 the MT'S aren't even pay to win though. I got lots of good stuff just from playing
Wait we have functioning jetpacks? Why are people still whining about hoverboards if we have jetpacks.
+Plebeian+
You can't grind on a jetpack!
...Well, you could, but it wouldn't look as cool.
+Leo Ryff can't grind on a hover board either it hovers, can't touch the rails
Not if you go at the proper angle.
+Plebeian+
Because said "jetpack" is only good for 30 seconds of flight.
+DocWolph like in Halo
1.7 quintilion kilograms...JEEZ
the only way to generate that much weight is with a bolt of lightning!
ikr? I corrected it too
Q*bert Gamer Uh, it's 1.21 gigawatts.
+Archontasius US tons (Short tons) are around 100kg lighter than metric tonnes (Which are 1000kg). Just in case you mixed them up.
"So many Kilograms...wow...amazing" - Sean Murray
Nice, I miss when Game Theory was like this.
then Fnaf obession attack
+loszhor me too.... ;_;
"De spartans die from being it in the back because of a cord disconnecting" Even though you know, EVERYTHING DIES FROM BEING HIT IN THE BACK FROM A GODDAMN SUPER SOLDIER!
+killerinstinct59 And also, the Spartans don't just die from a hit to the back because de armour is way too heavy. They die from a hit in the back because, for one thing, Spartans are super duper strong. And for another, their power armour makes them strong enough to easily flip a tank; and even a mobile base. And also, gameplay balance.
I would choose Cortana over Siri any day.
Even though she's evil, I would still use her!
What about Serina I have chocolate.
Get a Windows phone
+Louis Rivera or Windows 10
I have her on my HTC she is in the market place but she is still "beta" in a sense. but on my laptop she is amazing. and she connects with my HTC to inform me of missed calls.
Next: "The Science Behind the Bioshock Series", please!
This ^^
>System Shock
game theory?
+Marcos Valverde Even more magical than Halo! Heck, the game is practically magic disguised as science.
+cortster12 "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." -Arthur C. Clarke
As farfetched as Bioshock is, no one really know how far Eugenics could take us genetically or technologically.
Came for halo trivia, left with a PHD
Post Halo Disorder... only took me three years...
Lol
Was literally about to leave for my friend's house and play the Master Chief Collection with him, but I guess that can wait 12 and a half minutes.
The way the Green Banded Broodsac makes a snail appealing to a bird was also exhibited in the mutated strain of the Vocal Parasites in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
In conclusion, quite a bit of stuff in Halo is actually possible and extremely early versions of some of the stuff exists today.
Nice, but can you explain the science behind how bad Halo 5 ended up being?
+CerberusKnox
Multiplayer good.
Campaign bad.
Multiplayer designed by team that knew what they were dong.
Campaign written by a guy who knew almost nothing about the Halo universe.
That's the easiest way to describe it.
I applaud
+James Michael IMO I don't like Halo 5''s Multiplayer
I didn't think it was that bad. However I do feel like the story was advertised to be something way different than what we actually got.
+James Michael "Multiplayer designed by team that knew what they were *dong*." Made me laugh so hard. I have no idea why.
Where did the high quality Halo 2 cutscenes come from?
+gigastrike2 anniversary edition or master chief edition
The Master Chief Collection by Blur
My brain just exploded after watching this.
+Kai Kaurinki So you typed this before your brain exploded then?
+The Ultimate No, when his brain exploded, he collapsed onto his keyboard and just so happened to press the correct keys
Jamazon Or maybe... the Flood typed this
HOW DID YOU KNOW!?!?
+Kai Kaurinki you should check out Mike Ridolfi if you liked this.
What I like about Halo:
The story of 1-3
Halo Wars (Strategy games are great, I never understood the hate for it.)
The music
What I hate about Halo:
The community
How past Halo 2 it's an Xbox exclusive.
+Caleb Stovall It's a good game, one that deserves praise, but ever since Bungie dropped it it's fallen, bad. I didn't like 4 and 5 doesn't appeal to me in the slightest. (nice profile pic btw, all hail the nep)
+Caleb Stovall Halo Wars was okay. The only thing I didn't like about it were pre-set base locations. There is nowhere to strategically create bases, and hindered the overall options.
Pman If the gameplay is less fun, then there's a good reason as to why people think Bungie is better.
Gotta disagree with you on story. By the end of 3 it went bananas.
+Caleb Stovall Halo Wars was likely hated due to the fact that it was a strategy game. It's a solid strategy game, but people were asking for another FPS.
One thing I’ve always loved about these games is the soundtrack and how Cortana calmly tells you crap while you’re getting shot in an intense firefight. Can we talk about this later, Cortana? I could die right now.
Trying to eat while watching this... is not a good idea :(
why ?
The flood
+The8347135 I somehow managed to do so, wasn't fun.
The flood are scary sure and it is gross sure but you guys just have weak stomachs lol I remember playing CE and eating pizza right before and during the flood introduction. It did scare the hell out of me though haha
Halo is so fucking good. Not really gameplay wise, but the story and science behind it is unreal.
So basically... Halos science will never be done in any of our lifetimes
Well the original trilogy was based in 2552
And our great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great grand children's lifetime
Not if you believe in the me that believes in you, Simon!
+Simon The Digger Handheld video conferencing was once considered Star Trek technology.
+Simon The Digger Humanity will have destroyed itself before we get there
The Energy Sword and how it works sounds a lot like how the beam sabers are supposed to work in the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise.
03:45 "The Halo Rings were created for one specific purpose: to eradicate the Flood from within the Milky Way Galaxy."
No no no no NO. Cortana literally calls Chief a barbarian for thinking this. The Halo Rings are designed to eliminate all sentient life within the Galaxy, removing the organic FOOD for the Flood.
Please, bring more of these. You have absolutely no idea how much I liked this video, and I'm not even a fan of Halo. This was so well done, congratulations.
"can shoot rings of plasma"
Could we get a ray gun from CoD?
+AdrianThePlainGuy The ray gun shoots radiation(or maybe radio active material, not sure), not plasma.
Actually it might be sort of possible it wouldn't be the exact thing but we could use extremely heavily irradiated material encapsulated in a metal bullet casing or something that could be launched with sufficient force and range to impact a body it wouldn't kill instantly but it would kill you overtime for sure
Hen Barrison it shoots Gamma Rays i think. (like in Fallout)
AdrianThePlainGuy I think it's gamma radiation. That's the strongest type.
+AdrianThePlainGuy who the fuck cares about that trash game for 12 year olds
SCIENCE BITCH!!!
+Lenny Wow you sure showed him by... noticing his profile picture?
+Letonintendo And his channel art. And his videos.
***** Why do people care so much? Let people like what they want. It's not hurting you in any way.
+Letonintendo because being a grown man and liking a show about animated ponies is freaking weird.
***** Wow, next adults will be banned from playing Mario games and Animal Crossing. Apparently as soon as you hit 18, you have to dislike everything you liked previously and only show interest in the news and politics.
So much science going on in the thumbnail
This was cool as hell. I hope you guys do more stuff like this in the future.
Smart AI is still the scariest thing in this video imo :3
can you please do more halo stuff? This stuff is so incredibly well done and probably took hundreds of hours to make, so good job and keep up the good work.
Wasp > Spiderman confirmed
This was kickass, I love learning about the depth of science in areas that we often explore in fiction.
Nothing about the armor technology. Really? I really wanted to know more about the technology of the armor, but I'm glad there's a lot of science studies to make some really cool Halo stuff.
+Christian Carlson Game Theory.
Great video. You should have talked a little more about the forerunner technology from the books. Some of my favorite sci-fi there!
The Halo story was soo good... Shame Halo 5 had to FUCK everything up by being an "standalone story".
WOOO MISSOURI REPRESENT
+sneegsnag Hell yeah!!! Whooooo! Didn't think that party school could do anything right but basketball. hahahaha
+sneegsnag Yeah I didn't think our state did anything good, but look at that.
YEHA MISSOURI MUDA FUDGAS.
+Elliot Ritchey our state has surprised many other states that people don't recognize today
you guys should do a rare ware episodes and have multiple parts.theres so much great facts to go over!
Is THAT what the 'S' stands for? Science?
coolest episode ever!! Need more did you know science for games
Did you know, PC gamers would really like some Halo love again... It's a goldmine for microsoft. No PC gamer is going to buy a console just for Halo, but many of us would love to buy Halo for PC.
+bowser515 That's actually pretty disgusting. You wouldn't buy a console for a game which is essentially the idea of an exclusive but would gladly buy it if it was on PC. Wow.
Player One
I have no idea what your comment actually means. My point was exclusives don't really work, they just limit the customers and lower the potential budget for the next game. We already have PC's so of course we'd buy a decent game like Halo for it, especially as the PC is by far the best platform available for FPS titles.. You do realise also that Halo and Halo 2 were released on PC initially right?
bowser515 Yes, I know. As well as the original GoW.
But what you're basically saying is there shouldn't be exclusives and they should come to the PC always. And yes they do work. I bought a 360 for Halo 3. It was worth it. I bought a Wii for Mario Galaxy, It was worth it. I bought a psp for dissidia. It was worth it.
If there were no exclusives and every console was the same there would be no competition.
Player One
I didn't say that at all, I just said there is a vast customer base waiting for it on PC. Most PC gamers start of with consoles as I did, we are not likely to take a step back to consoles again to play a Halo game, I'm not sure why you feel that view is disgusting? It is just common sense frankly and it would make sense to release the follow up games on PC. Console exclusives are ridiculous imo. If they didn't exist, it would be a level playing field and the hardware developers such as Microsoft and Sony would have to step up their game and make better equipment in order to sell their platform of choice, that would be good for everybody. Not that it is relevant to PC, they could still release it on that platform and still have their console exclusivity if they really feel they need it. The only reason a game should be exclusive is if it simply won't run on another platform, clearly PC versions will never fall into this bracket when it comes to console titles..
bowser515 No, it really doesn't. It doesn't make sense to release them on PC.
What about Mass Effect & Science? It may not look it on the outside but if you go into the games' codex it gets really fucking scientific and deep. Seriously, it takes into account real life logic and offers new ideas on how to take technology. Hell, even the title itself is based upon science.
Yeah, science!
+Puzzle Solver You just made my day with that comment. It's perfect. :)
The Leucochloridum Paradoxum were also used as the basis for the vocal chord parasites created by CodeTalker, in MGSV: The Phantom Pain. You hear them referenced in the mission "Shining Lights, Even in Death", when the Mother Base Lab Tech says "I'm not a snail". To which, Code talker begins making the comparison of the parasites and how they instinctively act like the Leocochloridium
Did you know: Cortana was more Sexier in Halo 4 than Halo 5. lol
I'm a big fan of marathon but didn't know about the dingle zombie thing, thumbs up
I learned more about parasites than about Halo with this video :-P
Now I don't watch DYKG much anymore. But I'm really happy, because this is one of the first videos I've seen in a while that featured cool information that isn't super well known and found on wikipedia.
Why can't we have the better Halo's like CE, 2, 3, ODST, and Reach?
Halo 5 is pretty good
+Halo Zero it's not. Multiplayer probably. But no.
Odst was total shit? Are you an idiot?
What do you mean "like reach" reach sucked
4, 3, and reach in my opinion were the best.
I love this. Keep doing videos like this for more Sci fi games.
But...How do magnets work?
+DoodAfro magic, dark magic in particular. be afraid.
use caution when using the fridge.
+DoodAfro
The word magnet comes form the word magic.
Ducking magnets, how do they work?
+kira angle Either way, never swallow one of those things that you throw two things in the air and the buzz together. Scared the shit (literally) out of my brother for the time being.
+DoodAfro that's a dangerous question, friend
This was such an interesting video! I would love to see more of this!
can you do a Did You Know Gaming of Undertale?
No
:(
don't worry I'm with ya
😀
***** Duke Nukem 3 or forever?
***** you'd think that they would have already covered Duke Nukem 3D, considering that they mostly did classic games when the channel started out, didn't it?
Quality video right here. Thanks for the good work.
ayyyy
lmao
+SpyBomber64 ey b0ss
+RottenPizza801 can i habe de pusi pls
B0ss please, I habe a cancer.
+RottenPizza801 habe u seen a alien!?!?
Loving that halo 2 mjolnir mix background music.
Do UNDERTALE please please please I love the game
No just no
+Karim5173 yes just yes
I'm with you 😀
I honestly think this is didyouknowgamings best video
Ex Machina?
8:40, bet Tucker is happy to hear that.
8:25 Can't have an energy sword without thinking Lightsabers.
I'd like to see science on the covenant cruisers personally.
The CSO assault carriers were so cool.
A 12 minute didyouknowgaming!?!?!Now that's better than 7 minutes average.
High key wanna see another halo science vid
Funny, the solid light weapons in Phantasy Star games are apparently made with photons. Though photons also serve as the games' equivalent of mana, at least in PSU onward (even in Phantasy Star 0 which is supposed to be a spin off of the first PSO game which used Technique Points instead of Photon Points).
Wow, so lightsaber blades in the Star Wars universe could very well be composed of actual light! Fascinating!
You know what would be all the more interesting? The science behind Deus Ex (any and all the games) augumentations. I'd like to know how that Icarus Landing System works.
This is one of the better videos on this channel.
That last part about the A.I.'s is a deep topic cause damn
A few things are a bit wrong in this. 1, the Halo's were transported using the Arks portal to their destinations, most likely barren gas giants for resources and fuel mining, as seen in Halo 2. Secondly, the Halo Arrays were not designed to kill Flood, but their food (or any life form of significant sentience to form a Gravemind.) They can also survive without a host, ala Infection Forms.
If you haven't seen Ex Machina you should watch it, the end of this video reminded me of it and it matches it so well
2:11
Shadow: the space colony...
Ark?
MARIA!
In one of the terminals guilty spark talks about recognizing the return of the reclaimers and preparing the halo for their arrival. Possibly doing something to make it easier for them to land?
Because of RedVSBlue, every time anyone talks about the energy sword, I think about it being a key. Plus their crazy story with the AIs.
Any way you can provide a link to that discovery about hardlight? I'd really love to learn more about it.
when he mentions the spartans weighing roughly 1000lbs that was mainly for the spartan 2s. the other generations of spartans wear lighter versions of armor due to not having such extreme augmentations done to their bodies.
I really wish you had links to your sources. I would love to read up on some of that stuff.
hory sheet.. this video was really, really entertaining, even though i didn't knew a lot about the world of Halo.
Nice job there fellas from DYKG
I always thought lagrange was pronounced "lag range", as in a point in space where the range to the influencing gravitational points was just right for the object in question "lagging" just inbetween these gravitional points. Mind blown.
the moment they said "Hard Light" all i could think of was Rimmer from Red Dwarf.
3:40 Ships would not burn up due to air friction. The heat seen from atmospheric reentry is caused by air compressing, which happens because air molecules can't get out of the way of a ship flying thousands of kilometers per hour. The heat produced rips the ship apart.
When we ever start developing plasma type weapons, I believe it will be closer to Star Wars blasters or W40K plasma weapons than Halo.
Star Wars blasters have the advantage of having gas(tibanna) as their source of ammunition and at the same time, able to be customized by mixing the gas with other chemicals to either be better against machines or their equivalent of silenced weapons. Like real life, their gas ammunition is kept in cartridges like the modern bullet magazine. In Halo, there are no ammo cartridges for plasma weapons I have at least seen so it led me to think the Covenant either tosses those things aside or it has a long recharge time.
For W40k plasma weapons could be considered as the prototype stage of modern plasma weapons if we were to begin development of it. Like Star Wars, it uses cartridges, but instead of typically shaped gas cartridges, the W40k universe(mainly the Imperium) uses flasks or a backpack container to store the ammunition. Also, instead of using tibanna, they use a real life element called, Hydrogen. They also make use of similar weapons called Melta weapons, but thats a topic for another day. Main drawback for W40k plasma weapons are that they are EXTREMELY dangerous to the user and the victim on the receiving end. Think of it as being hit by a small sun going through your chest. At the same time, the weapon overheats REALLY quickly and can even explode. The ammo itself can melt your hand off if you are not careful when reloading and some of the fuel leaks out.
Halo's definitely my favorite console-only shooter
The music makes me jizz my pants and the books/expanded universe are pretty good too
Except for those spin-off shows about Captain Lasky and Spartan Locke
and the novels by Karen Traviss...
im gonna put myself in cryosleep wake me up when energy swords are a thing thx
Plasma weapons in the Halo universe function by projecting an electromagnetic "path" for the burst of plasma energy to follow. (simplified version)
The insect at 6:54 is not the mentioned wasp, in fact it's in a whole other Family of insects: Mantispidae (mantidflies).
What I love about Halo: The amazing and deep story, Music, the Masterpiece of Halo 3, the great strategic game play of Halo Wars, and the MASTER GODDAMN CHIEF!!!
What I don't like: Halo 4 bring utter trash and super short, Halo 5 having only 3 missions with a payable Master Chief.
Honestly I love halo so much cus it's just sciencey and believable enough to be within the realms of imagination but isn't too dull and boring y'know? They get the balance between realism and fun really well
holy shit so when they were talking about the ai thing im guessing thats what church had but somehow he survived rampancy which is awesome
Ooo! The Marathon scrapbook!
PLEEEAAASSSEEE do a Did You Know for the Tales Of series!!!!!!!!!!!!
So you're telling me that Halo is theoretically scientifically accurate AND having things such as lightsabers, energy swords, and light shields are possible in the (relatively) close future?! You get a like DYKG, this video had me drawn in so much it felt twice as long
This is the coolest type of science there is
Damn. The more I learn about wasps, the more sorry I feel for spiders.
gravity? who gives a crap about gravity?
Me!
Hope you get the reference
QR Code
-falls-
+itaybron "Hah" (Bottle shoots)
+QR Code Ahh, my beautiful hat!
CJ: I hate gravity!!
On the topic of swarm intelligence, look up "army of caterpillars."
Preferably not when eating.
you forgot to mention that metroid did everything you described not only first, but better... excluding the energy sword.
Actually... The friction doesn't play a very large part in "burning up" vessels entering atmospheres. It's more to do with the vessel compressing the atmosphere directly ahead of it that causes the heat. Woooo.
very interesting episode!
A Halo in the Halo of the Halos of Alpha Halo?
Heavy!!
This is pretty damn fantastic.
So good, very interesting!
The animal pictured in the video labeled as "Hymenoepimecis Argyraphaga" is actually not labeled properly. The animal in the picture is not a wasp, but a mantidfly-- an animal in the same order as lacewings and antlions.
