379. How To Repair a Canal Towpath
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 18 янв 2024
- In this first of two parts, I show how repairs are made to a canal towpath where ‘wash holes’ have appeared, using aggregate/concrete filled bags to help preserve and prevent further bank erosion. A ‘wash hole’ is an area of towpath that has eroded and washed out, usually caused by passing boats. This video was filmed four years ago and is now re-published with a new introduction.

I often wondered how they repaired the eroded towpath. Thank you Alan very interesting.
Hi Stephen, it works for short lengths but longer stretches would be piled with the use of plant and machinery. Glad you found it of interest, cheers.
Hi Alan what an eye opener for someone who does not travel on boats, very hard work but they all seemed to enjoy it. Stay warm and safe 😊
Hi Sandy, it’s probably not what you’d expected. It is labour intensive and progress is slow but it gets the job done. Have a lovely weekend 🤠
Hi Alan, I’ve seen this before but still enjoyed it very much. Certainly looked like hard graft 😂 I’m doing my first bit of volunteering in February. I will be joining the tow path task force at Hertford lock on the river Stort. Well done for all your volunteer work to date, it’s needed more than ever now. Have a wonderful weekend, say hi to Sally from me if you’re seeing her 👍
Thanks for watching again Paul, I’m pleased to hear you’ll be volunteering shortly and wish you well with that. CRT do have a heavy reliance on volunteers. You too have a great weekend, have spoken to Sally this evening. Cheers
Being a groundworker back in time, it is great to see how others maintain such repairs in an area other than road sides and motorways. The Canal & Rivers trust workers do work extremally hard to fix what needs to be fixed. Just as in any job that requires maintenance. Dedication and a workmanship that goes hand in hand together to make things a better and more safer environment. 🖖👍Brilliant Vlog Alan.
Thank you for your great comment, the CRT have a difficult job maintaining the canal network, no two locks are the same, gates have to be purpose built, there are occasional breaches, many fallen trees, very labour intensive. Glad you enjoyed watching 🤠
Thanks to all the volunteers for there work.
You’ll see a lot more volunteer activity in the second part. They do a great job
Hooray for all volunteers keeping the canals in shape! Great tribute video. ❤
That's so good of you to say, thank you very much. I've not said this before, but in the 1980s, I worked with someone called Umberto. Cheers
What a huge amount of prep and work goes in to fixing the toe path, great video Alan.
Thanks very much Dougie, towpath repairs make slow progress unfortunately, cheers.
What a fantastic presentation. Your channel has turned into a most delightful programme to watch. I have been on the canals for holidays for many years and am so impressed with all the hard work put in to keep this remarkable resource functioning. Long may these techniques continue. Thank you Alan
Hi Ginny, thank you for your lovely comment, which is much appreciated by me and no doubt any volunteers who see it. It’s good to know you enjoy boating holidays on the canals. Best wishes Alan
Thanks Alan for showing us this repair job which as interesting that it was it looked like very hard work but looks like a great idea and I think that it would be the sturdiest part of that towpath. Hats off to those guys that did a brilliant job. Have a great week. Take care and all the best. Stevie
Hi Stevie, thanks for your comment, it is heavy, labour intensive work, so progress is slow when making repairs. All the best, take care, more storms on the way!
That’s an exhausting job and makes me feel like I need a nap. So much manual labor and there really isn’t any other way to accomplish a good result except hands-on. It’s great that you have volunteers to jump in and get the job done. Very interesting project.
Hi Mary Jane, a good idea to watch both towpath episodes together. It is very labour intensive, that's why jobs like this take so long.
Well that opened my eyes Alan! It was very interesting on how the repair takes place and how labour intensive it really is. It highlights those who are always knocking CRT instead of thanking the volunteers and benefit they put their energies in helping instead of criticizing. Greetings from North Dartmoor by the way, from -7c yesterday to a balmy +4 this morning!!!
Greetings Bill, I used to love walking on Dartmoor. Did you watch my video on letterboxing? No.274. The CRT have a difficult job maintaining the network and there is heavy reliance on volunteers, who do great work. Milder here today, the marina has begun thawing out.
Nice one Alan, I hadn't seen that one !
I'm glad that you refreshed our memories !
Stay dry !
Stu xx
Glad you enjoyed watching Stu, being blown around at the moment, all the best.
Hi Alan. GG says woof. I love the new way that your channel has developed. Congratulations
Hi Kat, that's very kind of you to say, thank you so much. Reggie says woof woof. All the best.
Evening Alan, a fascinating look at how things are done. Watching it, as we sit in front of a roaring log burner, I'm glad it's not me in that canal....many thanks for sharing 🍷🍷
Evening Steve, this was filmed in November, so it would have been cold. I too was involved in shovelling, mixing, pouring, bag holding, carrying etc but I don't believe I've got me on film. Glad you found it of interest, cheers.
I watched this vlog first time round in 2019, but I still enjoyed watching it again.
That young lad deserves a medal. He worked really hard.
That's great to know Harry, thanks for watching it again. He did a great job and was I recall new to doing that. I also mucked in with making up the bags, just not on film.
great video relating to repairs on the toepaths...interesting and like you
mentioned, labour intensive.....love that you focused on the guys actually working!!
(was glad to see reference to Napton Narrowboat yard..as we actually rented a
narrowboat there several years ago..my induction to Narrowboats....don't have
them here in Canada, would recomment if one gets a chance and can holiday
on a narrowboat, it is a great exerince, one to be remembered) thank you
gary
Hi Gary, many thanks for watching and commenting. I also hired a boat from Napton Narrowboats before I bought my boat. And I was involved in preparing the bags for the towpath repairs but didn’t film myself. Glad you enjoyed watching.
Alan this was very interesting, thank you. Stay warm and safe
Glad you enjoyed it Ginger, the cold spell is drawing to a close fortunately. Wind is coming instead. Cheers, take care.
Well, that was interesting, thanks Alan.
Glad you enjoyed it Charles.
Hi Alan. That was intresting to see & those guys work hard.🍻
Thanks Bob, I also got involved with the shovelling, mixing and bag holding, but don't think I filmed me doing it, It's heavy going.
A lot of hard manual labour. Good on you guys.
Thanks Roger, kind of you to say👍
It seems such a long time since you made this Alan. Still, a very god second watch though. Best Regards. Bob and Helen.
Hi Bob and Helen, thanks for watching again, all the best Alan

I was walking near Lower Frankton on the Llangollen where they had been doing repairs, lots more bits needed doing though, so its very interesting to see how its done! Thanks for sharing!
My pleasure, I’m glad you enjoyed watching, thanks for commenting.
Thanks Alan for a great info video. I imagine it would also be very useful for training purposes. Cheers from Bali.
Thanks Steve, I’m glad you enjoyed watching, it certainly would benefit those interested in doing towpath repairs. Cheers
gd vid
Thanks Lee👍
Enjoyed seeing how they go about the repairs, though Im not a boater,Thanks to the CRT staff and Volunteers for looking after our heritaged canals.
Thanks for watching and commenting, it's a process that seems rather archaic but it wotks for short lengths where repairs are needed.
