We take a work boat loaded with 3 tons of surface dressing from the Canal and River Trust depot at Napton Bottom Lock to the work site near the junction of the Oxford and Grand Union Canals.

    Thanks for putting this video out. It's amazing how many miles of canal there are. Seeing you guys do repairs makes me wonder about how it was for the original canal builders. So much work has gone into those canals over the years.

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  4 года назад +1

      Quite a feat of engineering when they were built with the limited tools available at the time. Originally there were about 4,000 miles of canals (6,400 kilometres). Now about 2,000 miles.

    I had my first ever canal boat weekend in March, I'm one of the lucky ones to get out on the canal before Covid 19. I had previously seen your handy work repairing the bank in this location and passed it while we were enroute to our mooring near the Folly pub. Thanks for showing me again Alan, it's been nice revisiting 😊

    Greetings Alan.
    That Armco barrier is destroyed by hire boaters slamming into it opposite the marina.
    Its a shame to see it in such a poor condition.
    We cruised past where your working to turn onto the Grand Union Canal many years ago fond fond memories.
    Old father clock does not stop ticking.
    Keep safe and dry and virus free Alan.

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  4 года назад

      Hi David. You can't see the state of the barrier from the towpath, you need to be on the water, hence my 'tongue in cheek' remark. Glad it brought back good memories for you. Take care and stay safe. Cheers Alan

    Very educational. I had to look up "Grano" to find out about "Grano Dust". It sounds a lot like the "Quarter Down" gravel that we use, only ours is a light brown colour.

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  4 года назад

      I suppose the colour depends on the source, the grey might come from granite or limestone and the light brown from a sandstone. Cheers

      Cheers Alan, I've spent some time today rewatching your videos of your trip to Banbury.. which in part is the trip we had planned before the lockdown came in to force. Brings back such happy memories of our trip in August 2018 which, i guess, must have been when you and Sue made your journey? Very enjoyable to watch it all again... 🍷🍷

    Hi Alan, a very interesting look at the maintenance required to keep the canals in shape. Has it ever been known for boat users whenever, wherever they travel to do a bit of maintenance such as trimming canal edges or overhanging tree branches, scooping rubbish out of the canal etc? Is it allowed even? Or is it a case of I pay my license fee to CRT thereby it is the responsibility of CRT to do maintenance. Just wondering? Thanks for all the videos. Stray safe. Cheers.

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  4 года назад

      Thanks Louise. Some boaters will collect rubbish if they can, though it's not easy from a moving boat. As for the 'garden' work, I think they would cut back, if something was bothering them where they are moored but you have to consider the disposal side as well. There's them that do and them that don't! Take care. Cheers

      @@MyNarrowboatVenture I like the reassuring sound of a steady engine in a vessel, many's the time I've slept soundly in a bunk with my ear pressed against a pillow listening to Thundering Diesels many decks below. I was referring to you RPM guage in the film that seems to be registering 800RPM when the engine is clearly shut down. Could well be a querk of the guage (non-mechnical electronic unit?).
