395. Narrowboat DIY Hull Blacking

- Every three years or so, a narrowboat needs to be taken out of the water to have its hull ‘blacked’, this being necessary to preserve the steel work, particularly along the water line. I last blacked my boat in April 2021, so it’s time to be re-done and on this occasion, I’m grateful for Sally’s help. In this episode, the boat is taken out of the water using an hydraulic trailer, pressure washed, part blacked and then moved on to the hardstand for the real challenge to commence. I would have used a 80 grit first to get the rust off and really get the gloss off the paint and then the 120 grit to finish off but you must do what you think is best Alan. Good job ❤
Hi Martin. Thanks for your advice. I didn’t research what I’ve done before but I think 80 would have been too harsh for my paintwork. There’s no real rust on my boat, I don’t seem to get the same issues I see on other boats. All that matters to me, is that I’m happy with it! And I am 😃 Cheers
I find the small foam paint rollers from Wikes don't fall off the inner plastic core when using solvent paints. The ones that a well known chandlers sell unfortunately do, very quickly. Looking forward to the next episode.
Hi Simon. My paint rollers come from various sources, some I have from years ago but I’ve never bought them from a chandlers. It’s worth knowing the Wickes ones are good. All the best.

The gland packing should have 2 or 3 drops per minute of water. I've changed quite a few on pumps in the past. Also, look out for packing next time you are at a steam pumping station. 👋

I hope you picked up a new roller when you went to get more primer. It's so hard to do that work without good tools. Lovely video though and I am so glad you have Sally to help. Good double act there!

Hi Alan, good to see you looking after your boat and that you had some help this time around 👍 those rollers were a bit annoying, not sure what you can do to stop them coming off. Maybe a big brush would work better for you as you mentioned it gave good coverage. The tunnel stripe hadn’t weathered too well either, hope it cleans up and repaints ok. Hi Claire. One aspect of the stern gland that I chose not to mention, is whether it should drip or not, as boaters have varying views on that topic. Mine tends to drip, which I think it should but sometimes it doesn’t, which I find rather odd. All the best, take care, Alan and Sally x
It doesn't feel like it has been so long since the blacking was done, Alan, but in all fairness, the years do go past as quickly as do the age we get. You've made a good deck hand of Sally, giving her a task of responsibility and enabling her to feel more at home and some self experience she will need to use once she has her own boat to tend to. Well done Sally, it is good to see you muck in and help Alan out. Big high 5 to you girl. 🖖

Alan buy good quality rollers & I would think that sponge is not the correct one for blacking (?) as once it is one them they will become very heavy (hence they want to slip off)
Keep the L shape pointing up as well if possible so should it want to slide it will slide down.
I would be inclined to also (as you saw) use a good quality selection of brushes of varying sizes as a bigger brush will make short work along those flat sides.
As others have said 80 grit to quickly deal with the rust before moving up.
Thanks for your advice. I agree with all your comments but there’s no rust and as I painted the boat, I feel that 80 would be too harsh. In the next episode you’ll see a quality 9” hairy Harris roller sleeve on a different frame, which worked a treat. My natural wrist movement means sometimes the roller sleeve is ‘facing down’ it just happens, but again I agree with what you say. I use a mix of cheap and quality brushes, the cheap ones get chucked and the better ones cleaned for re-use. Cheers, thanks for commenting.

Looks like you are doing a great job in poor conditions. I was worried about the blacking sticking to the hull in the cooler weather. Lots of hard back breaking labor. Hats off to another old guy showing how its done.

We're in the same process on our 59' nb. After pressure washing, we went over everything with scrapers, and used an electric drill with a brass brush to clean off any rust, and applied Fertan. Once that dries, tomorrow we wash off the Fertan, let it dry, then roll on the blacking.
The longer the boat, the harder it is. I did a lot of scraping and brushing last time but the Marina has a more powerful washer now, which got any loose stuff off. Just one small area where perhaps I should have scraped. Fortunately, no rust to treat. I have used Fertan, as it was recommended, but having to wash it off is a real bind. I can strongly recommend Vactan, which doesn’t need washing off. As it is applied, you can virtually see it doing good, you need to see it, to believe it but well worth considering for the future. I wish you well with the blacking.

Pressure washing with no eye protection, a braver man than me.
I spotted that, suppose there’s no direct kick back.
He was jet blasting away from himself and at other times he stepped back so not a novice

From an electric bolllard by the corner of the large shed, which is not generally in view.
Pretty well all paint rollers I have ever had have been, what's the best word, rubbish!
It’s a good word but it does get better in the next episode, both handle and roller, all 9 inches of them!
THE ROLLERS ARE CRAP FOR SURE BUT THERE NOT MADE TO HQNDLE THE PRESSURE YOUR APPLIYING YOUR THERE JUST NOT MADE TO HANDLE BIG GUYS .
I subsequently used a wider, better quality roller and sleeve, which worked fine.
