  • This vid was intended for my Patrons but friends convinced me to share publicly, so there you go :) I preordered the deck with my own money back in June. Everything I share are my honest thoughts and first impressions. I know I missed a lot with my commentary upon my first contact with the deck and didn't immediately catch a few obvious connections with fairy tales in some cards, but that is to be expected when giving first impressions.

I’m Baltic and some of the characters are familiar to me because our cultures were mixing together for hundreds of years and Empresses card looks like Žemyna (equivalent of Gaja) to me. Four of cups looks like a legend about magic pike that would grant your wishes if you let it go.

  • @wolfofcoins

Isn't it ironic that the box looks like a book, but there is no guideBOOK xD
The artist is amazing, this artwork is stunningly beautiful!
The Lovers card is so cute! I love the Kupala reference. Leszy is fantastic too, such a perfect depiction. The Hanged Man is absolutely beautiful. They might have used the golden chain to suspend him, but the roots work too :D I could put this picture as a poster on a wall in my room!
Maybe 7 of Wands depicts Wyrwidąb? Him and his brother Waligóra were brought up by a she-bear in the woods, according to legend.
So, this deck is very lovely, but I don't think I will be getting it... It is too expensive for me right now, I don't like how they went for the more generic, globalized version of the Moon and the Devil (but especially the Moon). And what's with all those horns and antlers!! xD I mean, yeah, antlered animals are important, but our ancestors were mostly farmers... And Perun with horns???

You may have already realized this but in the Wheel of Fortune card there is actually only 3 sets of hands, not four. On the right you see a hand near the top and another hand near the bottom. Those would belong to one, and on the left side the hands are seen in pairs! This is such a beautiful deck and it's looking like this is the deck I've waited 20 years for! I've never been so drawn to a deck as I am this one! Thanks for sharing this video.

    • @polishfolkwitch
      @polishfolkwitch  Год назад +1

Thanks but that is definitely not one set of hands, unless that person has their left hand on the right and vice versa - their thumbs are clearly going outwards, not inwards. As much as I'd like it to be one pair of hands, it goes against basic human anatomy 😂 Glad you enjoy the deck otherwise, it's a well-made pack of cards for sure.

I did splurge on the limited edition deck, my most expensive deck by far and I'm not disappointed as it has the extra cards which are so much more relevant to the Slavic Lore and lovely card stock. I will definitely be researching more of the names and stories you mentioned. Thank you so much!

-14:07 actually there are 3 pairs of hand, so if think they depicted Rodzanice.
-17:40 I have no idea what's this spring means, but they propably depicted pan-european (Slavic too) trope of white hart.
-25:27 Maybe Mokosz? The person on card is standing between crown and roots of Tree of Life. And it's kinda possible to find connection between earth and world (like Earth)
-26:00 it's modern symbol of Raróg
-27:00 maybe it's reference to Ruthenia which was actually norse-slavic mixed society (varegian upper classes, and Slavic lower classes)
-33:25 just typical fantasy armour, maybe inspired by Ruthenian lamerall and mirror armours
-33:52 modern Łada (Łado?) symbol on staff
-39:35 modern symbol of controversial God Kupała on cup
-47:49 maybe legend about golden duck from Warsaw
-51:00 maybe Lada? She is often depicted with swan in modern art.

If there's three pairs of hands, that means that somebody has two left hands, but okay 🤣

Hello! :-) Thank you very much for the walkthrough of the deck - I learned so many things from you about these cards. I really love the deck and am thinking of purchasing it. I just wanted to share a few insights about the cards you reviewed. In 5 wands with a dragon, I recalled the Zmei Gorynich who is usually three-headed and depicts the evil force to be conquered. Also, in 4 cups I saw a Russian tale about Ivan the Fool, who caught a pike that suggested granting Ivan three wishes if he let it back into the water. Maybe, the fourth cup that is being granted in the card depicts the good that is not noticed or ignored, since Ivan the Fool did not have an entrepreneurial spirit to use his chances well.

I wonder why the artistic antler choice, it seems like such a strange one but otherwise the artwork is visually stunning. I voted for both the cards that didn't make it into this one lol so I waited in the end for your thoughts. I'll be keen to hear how you get on with it. It's more rws than I anticipated but still seems to weave a lot into it, I loved hearing all the ties to folklore and culture from you, it was a real treat.

I think part of the problem as to why certain cards were chosen over the others is you had non-Slavs voting on the cards. And traditionally the Moon is symbolized as The Mother in astrology and in many cultures because the Woman’s menstrual cycle follows that of the Moon. At least this is my guess?? I didn’t know any Slavic legends when voting on the cards.

I was nervous to watch the walkthrough because I really wanted this deck but decided not to buy it because of the Moon card. I’m not go to spend three times the amount of the standard deck when even the standard deck is overpriced in my opinion. Plus once the “collector” sets are gone that awesome Moon card will be gone forever and the opportunity of the real Slavic Moon Legend. Anyway, most of the images in the deck are really cool, but I’m still go to stick to my principles of why I’m not go to buy this deck.

7 of Wands: what would you say about Wyrwidąb - he was raised by a bear, while his brother Waligóra was raised by a she-wolf. As for the 9 of cups it's simply złota rybka (legend of the gold fish) that grants wishes. 9 of cups is traditionally known as the 'wish card'. And your are absolutely right - 4 of Coins is from the legend about a golden duck (legenda o złotej kaczce).

Wow thanks a lot for sharing! Mine is on the way, it’s my third deck from them and I always picked the matte and cannot complain 😅. I love how much you know about the folklore so even if the pdf is never a thing, i would love more detailed guidance from you for sure. Tho i would also love the official one just to see what else is there to learn. I am Slovak and i think maybe the seven of cups could be the tale of the goldfish that if you catch it, will grant you three wishes. But not sure. With the sun card, it could be the baby is Koliada and so on, all the faces/stages of the sun… (i have a book where this was mentioned but am not home so cannot check it..) i am curious if any of these also meant to be Morena (death perhaps?) Vesna, Ziva, Radegast, but also the darker gods etc…. I was kinda expecting more clear gods and goddesses depictions.. hopefully they will release the pdf after all.
But the deck is gorgeous and i cannot wait to get mine. Hopefully it will arrive on Monday. Thanks a lot again for this great walkthrough.

The other cardstock is so much better! Really, it’s a really soft rose petal finish- not too much. The cards are very easy to shuffle and also they fan out easily which you can’t do with typical rose petal decks. I really think you need to try it. I also think the colours are more vibrant on the matte deck (not the mansion deck though as that one is the more typical rose petal finish).

I have now got the pdf which only contains the majors. I do share your bafflement at why they are all horned, could this be the symbol of either divinity or belonging to the pagan pantheons in this particular deck? Like, if one is horned, they are not a random or mortal person, they are a deity.
