Almost the same thing happened to me at my local hardware store in Bristol, CT. Great hardware store! But years back, I brought an OEM Ford immobilized key to them, thinking they’d cut it no problem. They gave me the same excuse. But they ended up just doing it for me after we went back and forth about it for a minute.
Scotty Kilmer I completely understand Walmart did the same thing to me
Hey Scotty, talk about crazy. Nissan dealer bought my 18 Q70 3.7 for 30 grand. That’s what I paid for it a year ago. Great car but 22000 miles, weird stuff was happening. I think I’m lucky.
Scotty, "Have a nice day" is New York-speak for GFY. Never go back to that store.
What state do u live in I have a lot of work for you
Glover's Lock only charged Scotty $2 but they got the best advertising on RUclips as payback 💯👍

I can imagine Scotty walking out of the store swinging his arms all over the place mad as hell.

That concept needs to expand to other areas of society, as well. Politics, for example.
Wat a bummer on the key deal I like rural king stores

Agreed 100% that old school key is the BEST! Just picked up my brand new 2022 Tacoma TRD Off-Road truck and made sure it had the manual transmission, manual hand brake and old school key AND old school car battery that doesn't need to be programmed. Great video as usual!
I love Scotty’s story about his experience at Rural King. Little did they know the power that he has to give them deserved negative press.
Yeah , I bet they wish they could go back and be nice .
Bet they have a nice day.
If it’s the manager I’m thinking of (I frequent that exact location) she probably said have a nice day with a snarky attitude
Wtf is wrong with that company? Hope this negative press bites your pocketbook, you have earned that.
Real King I HAVE THE OTHER KEEEEEYYYYYY,,,STUPID CO.
Love reading these comments. Also an auto locksmith and I do them all. Most stores cite liability as the issue, but most don't even know how to cut them correctly. And if they miscut them, then what? They don't want to be responsible if there is an issue. I've had to bail out some stores that got over their heads. I would appreciate Scotty putting out a PSA telling folks that you need to check local laws before you buy a programmer for keys. In some areas, it is illegal to own without the correct license.
Hi everyone, professional automotive locksmith here and I wanted to clarify a few things. Scotty said that once you lose your keys for a Toyota H blade system you will have to buy a new set of door locks. This will likely be true for your local mechanic, but this is not true for a locksmith that specializes in this. If you lose your keys to a Toyota H system, there is actually a "bitting" code stamped on a specific location of the car that I will not reveal. This code allows for a key to be cut from the code. A Competent locksmith will be able to perform an "immobilizer reset" that will allow you to program these keys without having an already programmed one. However, Scotty is 100% correct in advising you to have more than one key. The cost of creating a key from scratch is way more expensive (sometime $400 more) than buying a new key for $10 and having it programmed for $70. Also, I personally have used Aftermarket, Refurbished, and OEM keys, and there is a higher rate of failure on aftermarket keys and refurbished keys. That being said, the failure rate is very low on these (probably like 5%-10%) and most of the time you can return these keys for a refund. Be smart and call around to different locksmiths and the dealers themselves to get a price on these because you will absolutely get gouged if you're not smart about it.
And, as with your final arrangements, think pre-need planning.
Hey bud, auto locksmith here too. What about the older solaras and certain year tacomas and 4runners (I think?) that once you lose the keys its pretty much an expensive trip to the dealer. Ever hear of them? If so, is there a workaround you've discovered? As far as I know, I think they need to get a whole new ecu for all keys lost on those year/models.
You reveled the location the second you clicked the reply button. Because, you know. Search engines for things most ppl wouldn't know existed.
@@terrismith9095 Good point. Somebody said once, we gave away the most important atomic secret the day we dropped the damn thing. It works. Yes you can.
Code is stamped on lock cylinder. If its
2006 or older Toyota, might be on passenger side door.
I just did something like that. Bought an immobilizer key for one car (2000), and a key fob for another car (2018), and a local bonded locksmith cut/programmed both of them, no questions asked. Sounds like a boss-hog operation at that key store. Sorry you had that experience.
Finding a locksmith that will actually do what they are in business to do is getting just as hard to find like a good mechanic.
Most locksmiths have no clue about automotive stuff from the last 30 years. Most of the locksmiths I've met in my area are 60+ years old and are just really getting the hang of how a smartphone works. They got out of Automotive when transponders came in thinking that it was always going to be a dealership job.
I'm actually leaving being a semi truck mechanic and getting into Auto locksmithing for one of these guys since I'm comfortable with a scan tool and key programming stuff. It almost feels like public service too since most folks in a 100mile radius have been forced to pay like $250-$800 from a dealership when we will be able to do it for half that.
Make money and keep folks from getting bent over, that's a win-win!
Besides transmission work or pulling an engine the majority of car repairs can be done in the driveway if you have the tools, somewhat mechanically inclined and able to view youtube videos/have a Haynes or Chilton book for your car. The key stuff is out of control and we're at the mercy of car dealerships and locksmiths or buying expensive programming tools...
Exactly!
My wife's 2005 PT Cruiser that she leased back in the day, it had an immobilizer key, I went to a local locksmith to make a copy of the car key but I just needed a flat metal copy without the immobilizer so I could store it in my wallet in case I got locked out. I tried to start the Cruiser with the flat copy, and it started! But as soon as you press the brake to shift out of PARK it cut the engine.
@@colin3424 Don't worry. Half the dealership price will still cover your boat payment.
I used to live in Clarksville, TN. I can't recommend Glovers Lock Service enough. They have helped out several times. I'm glad to hear they will still cut those keys.
I can picture Scotty moving his hands around while at that store in my head 🤣😂
Lmao, very true!!!! I can see it....
I can see him taking a scan meter upside someone’s head!🥊
It was windy inside the store that specific day!😂
Yes! They made him leave because his hands, and passion about this, "scared" them!
That may be the liability issue..lol

Good ol days. Now I have to pay someone to program it
Thank You for pointing this out!!! I have the exact same problem getting my new keys for my Scion xB. I programmed the keys myself, but everywhere I go to get the keys cut... I get the same crap! Liability issue! I am looking for a regular Locksmith... 'cause most I have found are "Mobile Locksmiths" and they want to charge at least $80 to come cut the keys at my house... what a rip off!!
I like when you tell everyone about these stores. Anyone that conducts business like this doesn’t deserve our business. Appreciate you spreading the word Scotty.
They'd lose my business
The Rural King here in Huntsville is decent
This exact scenario happened to me at LOWES. The guy wouldn't cut my key because I brought my own. Thankfully the store manager cut them for me anyway, and charged me 2$ a key. I then used "SIMPLE KEY" (less than a hundred bucks) to program my keys and they work perfect!
This is a man that deals with poor service with both grace and humor. We love ya Scotty!!! Shame on that terrible shop for treating you that way.

you're so right....in being critical on keyless fobs....I learned the hard way what happens when car battery dies out totally so no electrical power is available even to unlock the steering wheel column ! The car was parked in a garage, with slightly turned front wheels, column wouldn't unlock and I was not able to push the car outside, to get it in a position for connecting with neighbor's car battery.....what a crazy situation....standard key (mechanical column lock) is so much logical and hassle free solution.....counter productive over engineering is what makes me mad......

This exact situation happened to me. Had an OEM key that needed cut but my local hardware store wouldn't do it. Had to go a couple more miles and they did it. Now I take all my business to them
Some people jus dont want to make money😂
Key cutting used to be simple because none of the keys were "chipped" I used to have 13 keys for my car because they were the ordinary key so maybe $130 total for all the keys over time.
When I got my first chipped key they gave me 2. I wanted more as I was absent minded. "Costs $100 per key." -- Not absent minded now and still have the 2 keys.
I recently used Tom's Keys and for $150 I was able to get a new fob-key cut to my car by picture and the tool to program (that you send back) and was able to program the fob and immobilizer that worked perfectly.
It's always nice knowing when you lock your keys in your vehicle, you can just reach in your pocket and grab the other one and get your other keys in 10 seconds... I always carry two on my person.
or you can just remember to remove your key when u exit.....carring two sets of keys everywhere is just dumb
@@sportfuryman I know, right? Now, being as smart as I am I would carry a hammer in case I got locked out of my car.
Two keys is a good habit. Not like they weigh you down or take up room in your britches.
@@sportfuryman Typically anyone who calls other people dumb for something so minor is usually the dumb one since they don't even bother to think things through thoroughly. Realistically, everyone has forgotten things to a certain extent in their life and I highly doubt you're a special exception... At least Stephen has the smart to have a backup plan instead of having to call a locksmith.
I usually put a spare in a magnetic key holder and put it somewhere under my car, but not somewhere visible. I locked myself out of my car before a date and luckily I had the extra
Scotty's got it on this one. I'd recommend 3 good keys-keep one in a safe or bury it in the backyard where only you know where it is.
It's getting hard to find a locksmith who can cut automotive keys on models made in the last 20-25 years or so.
Had a key blank cut by a battery & bulb chain store for a 1996 911-cost about $80 due to "liability issues"-understand the $$ but do not understand the liability issues. And these newer wifi type key fobs with push button starts-great when new but when something goes bad or you loose the fobs-you're screwed--and the dealer service center makes out like a bandit.
Scotty, you keep telling us that we need an honest mechanic like you. Do you know how difficult that is? Why don't you start up an association of honest mechanics like you? That would be so helpful (profitable too, I bet). "Scotty Certified"
And certified car salesmen. Don't go to RT112 Hyundai Medford Long Island New York. Saved a woman other day from being scammed. I'm mike the mechanic and I warned you.
I thought about this same thing before, the issue is verification. You would need the opinion of a number of customers that had different types of work done by the specific mechanic to verify their quality. But who's going to verify the honesty of the customers?
@@tucobenedictopacificojuanm6364 smh, all you really need to do is have scotty himself, or his son, friends, etc travel the country.
have a known good vehicle with no problems, and have a standardized test of common easily fixable issues. it would be sort of an undercover audit.
such as disconnecting a certain wire or something right before going to the shop so the AC wont work. then take it in, and see how the mechanic diagnoses the problem.
it should be a simple fix for the mechanic, and if he diagnoses anything else or quotes some outrageous price then he fails the test.
those that can correctly fix the simple issues should be "Scotty Certified" reputable shops that wont rip you off, straight from Scotty himself.
I believe even CBC Canada did this sort of thing and there are videos on yt about it, where they went to local shops for a simple oil change. had mechanics do preinspections and flush and fill with brand new oil right before taking it in just to see if the mechanics would rip them off - they even had some shops not even touch the cars and the same oil from before was still in the car and they never even did the change at all but still charged them, and also diagnosed other 'work that needed to be fixed', the old "go in for a $20 oil change and walk out $450 later"
Good idea/name. Scotty could name his channel, new one that 👍
I have worked on cars, "backyard mechanic" and I have met easily more than fifty mechanics in my life, including dealership certified mechanics, but I have never seen or heard of anyone like you. I wish I lived near you so you could look at my cars. You are a true mechanic.
Scotty, true story, last year I had to get replacement keys for a 1989 Honda. Only the dealership would do it, only $6. Their cutting machine the staff had to load the "cutting cartridge" for that generation of Hondas into the chuck. When they unearthed the cartridge for 1989 and literally blew dust off of it, they staff said "the last employee to touch this thing is either retired or dead or both."
When I lost a key I had a mobile key maker come.... they did it for half the dealer charge and also programmed it it works just as good as a dealer key
@@leadnsteel1428 it was such an old style, no shops in town has that style in stock. The Honda dealership actually had to order the keys (for $6/ea we ordered 3 just because) no chip just a metal blade.
Most lock cylinders of that era are extremely affordable and come with new keys. Most major parts chains sell them for less than 40$
On some new vehicles, Ford requires *TWO* original keys to program a new third key. Ford keys are pretty easy to program, take the original key, start the car, take the key out, put in the new key. On some of the NEW Ford vehicles, you need to take the TWO good keys, put them each in the ignition, then put the THIRD new key in.
So you probably want to have TWO spares. If you need a third key made, while you are at it, you might want to look into enabling remote start. On some Ford vehicles, it's just a matter of enabling Remote Start from a scan tool, then cutting a key with the Remote Start button on it.
After we moved to a new home. We discovered that the cover for the Gas Outside Grill was missing. I went to the local appliance store to buy a repalcement. The 'guy' who owns the store said; ' Did you buy the Gas Grill from us'? I replied 'no', we just moved into this area. He refusfed to sell me the Cover. A few months later we had to replace the Dishwasher. Guess where I did not go? What makes many people so nasty??

The combination of keyless entry with an immobilizer key is the best. You can still unlock the car from a distance and lock it and also use the key to enter and to lock the glove box. Also there’s something so satisfying about putting the key in the ignition and turning it over rather then pushing the brakes and pushing a button.
Good advice, Scotty. I lost the only electronic key fob I had for my old car. Had to get it towed to a dealer and have them order and program a new key. Between the tow and the key it set me back about $800. Lesson learned. Always have two good keys.
I had the dealer order and program a new electronic key fob for a 2011 RAV 4 I bought for my son that came with only a single fob. He is prone to losing things. The charge was over $400. Seemed excessive but didn't know I had other options at the time.
@@alanrussell6678 you may not have bad other options. Some keys can only be programmed by dealers (i think). Or maybe you gotta find someone with one of these $600 scan tools. I'm not sure.

Heads up fam. Most bigger Ace hardware stores have sidewinder key cutters and can even program. Dirt cheap compared to dealers and locksmiths. This can save you time and money. ;D
I have a 2019 tundra and I have never lost a key but have locked keys inside vehicles many times. I went to ace right after I bought it and they had the correct key and cut it perfect. It's not one that can be programmed so it won't start the truck, but it will open the door if I lock my real key inside. I also feel better about keeping it in magnet box hidden on truck because if someone finds it they won't be able to start truck.
Not ace... Their still expensive...
I once got my key stolen at some remote beach and the back up key was 300 miles away at home. I was able to get a locksmith who came out and made me a new key from scratch on the spot with a hammer and some sort of special screwdriver. A real artist I happily paid $150.
Scotty, they do that to you. No matter you are recognized on RUclips all over the World, imagine what they can do to the millions of people not recognized anywhere
Home Depot has an automated key machine. It scans the original then cuts the copy. No more user error. This machine will only cut when the barcode of the blank is scanned first. They would not cut the key I provided unless I purchased one of their keys. I had a Ford PATS key, BTW. Now I have two uncut Ford blank keys without the transponder. I was able to program the keys to my 03 Ford Focus, with a ThinkDiag TDK01 scanner, I got for $69. It paid for itself, just programming the keys.
I went to Lowes and ask them to rekey my door lock to match the new lock I had just bought. They said "No, because of security or something". They would rekey the one I bought but not the old one. I said "Security? If I have someone's door knob in my hand, I am already in their house!". He agreed, we laughed and I had the new one rekeyed. People say nutty things and often do not even know why.
I manage an apt bldg and we got new security locks. I was advised very sternly that I would have to be put on a list and show ID to get new keys cut.
However, if I wanted the place rekeyed, no problem! Just call us up!

With some cars you can go to the car dealer and order a replacement key. I know this because my son lost the keys to my wire's Yukon and we did this. With the new keyless ignition systems, the car thieves now have a device that can receive and rebroadcast the signal from the key and even though the key is physically out of range from the car, the car sees the broadcasted signal and the thief can open, start and drive away with the car. They recommend when your at home, to store your key in a metal box so the signal from the key can't be picked up outside of your house.
I feel your pain.. I had a shop mount my motorcycle tire but they couldn’t balance it because it’s too wide for their balance machine. So I called a Harley dealer that is able to balance it but I was told they can’t balance it because the wheel came off a Yamaha and not a Harley… I was MAD!!!!

Great video!! I got a fantastic deal on a used car couple weeks ago, but it only had one FOB. Even thought it cost me, I went down and had a second one made!! I had to go to the dealer dag nabbit!! I'm glad I did after watching this Video! Keep up the great work /Scotty!!
The needing two key fact is good to know.
Would've been nice to know that when toyota sold me a truck with one key cause of the chip shortage.
Information a dealer probably would hide cause it's a setup for more expensive work to be done.
im now really happy i just sold my 2015 jeep renegade - bought it used, it came with one key. never really gave it a second thought.
i traded it in for the same price i originally paid for it, and got myself into a brand new 2022 toyota tacoma - it came with two H keys, and a metal key tag with the re-key code stamped into it that i have tucked away in a seperate, even safer space than where i keep the spare key.
Scotty is right! Rural King moved into abandoned kmart locations. Great business plan.
Well done giving the shout out to the business that provided proper SERVICE.
This is an example of how things should be from now on. Businesses should always do what they can to provide good service... Especially now that any customer is potentially a widely known content creator that can make or break your business on their platform with review!
Mr. Key in Wintersville, Ohio is great to deal with. I locked my keys in my 06 Tahoe, called him and he said he'd be there in 10 minutes. I figured that it would cost a hundred bucks or more. I about fell over when he said $20. He has gained a lifetime customer.
I bought a Corolla from a dealer and they handled me one key. After a few years I paid it in full then I asked for the spare key and they told me that they gave it to me. WHAT A JOKE!!! CAUSE they always keep one key just in case they have to do a Repo. Scotty is right be extra careful with your keys. Don’t even thrust your dealer.
I always liked to carry an extra key in my wallet in case I lock keys in car, I trimmed down the head of my new Ford key so it would fit flat in my wallet, it will unlock the door but it won't START the car, Luckily I got 4 keys with my new Ford Transit........Scotty....your videos make me want my old 1964 Pontiac back ! You have a wealth of knowledge, A+ rating !
Love how Scotty calls out all these scammers!
Well, technically speaking, they aren't scammers. They didn't take his money, nor falsify anything to get his money. They refused to perform the service.
I have a 2017 F150 with push button start. You must have two functional keys to program a new one. Luckily they are easily owner programmed, but it should be the first thing you do when you get a push button start Ford.
Pretty much always enjoy your videos/humor. As a retail business owner we had people, Not customers, come in from time to time wanting us to install parts they bought online. We also Declined. If and When there is a problem with the Junk they got a Deal on, They always Blame Us. Not worth the hassle. You ever install Supplied parts for a customer and have a problem after wards? 100% yes
Neither do you sell parts for someone else to install.
I had a key made and programmed at Home Depot for my 04 ranger. It works great, at the time I only had the one key.
12 minutes and probably days of editing a video for a $2 key. I love Scotty 😂
I'm pretty sure Scotty has someone editing for him
@@katdaddy469 but still….
I agree. The keyless is definitely a step backwards.
Hi Scotty! Been through these same key issues myself.
afternoon!
This is so true. Somebody tells you to have a nice day but they did absolutely nothing for you. I had a similar situation but at a Toyota dealer. I bought an eBay key and they initially did not want to cut it but I told them if they break their tool or wrecked the key, no problem. They proceeded to cut the key and I had no problems with it.
Actually Scotty, if you have a keyless type key like the Honda example you displayed, you can't lock the car with a key inside. The proximity sensor prevents this.
This is also true for the POS Nissan I had for a while.
Lowes use to cut car keys for years, now they are asses about it, had same experience as Scotty at Royal King. It's because the Key Company they use started selling Car Key Services. Buying a $5 blank online, and having them cut it is screwing up their racket, but most local hardware stores will still cut them.
Hey Scotty, just wondering if in your circle of mechanic friends, any of them are located in Orange county CA? One more thing about these key fobs, remember to take them out of your pockets before putting your pants in the washer. Did that to both of mine. They still start the van but the other functions are gone.
im learning how to work on my own car because I'm tired of being ripped off by mechanics to only halfway do the job. on top of that I own an rx8 so its already difficult to find someone with working knowledge of my car so I've learned if you need something done you gotta do it yourself.
I guess I'll spend the bucks for a scan tool that can program keys since I can't find anyone within a 100 miles that can do the job. Just another reason to own an older car that doesn't cause these issues.
Then you do not even need to bother with a key...just toggle switch.
I love how Scotty ranted about the customer service as soon as he returned to his car lmaoo love it!
I swear they have over engineered new vehicles. What a pain in the tush!!
I can’t defend those people or the way they treated you, but I would never cut a key that I didn’t sell. Because the blanks that you buy on the internet are some time made out of hard metals and would ruin the key machine cutter.
They're probably scared of mass producing "stolen keys" without realizing how stupid that is in this case.
No, it's because the Key Company they use, started selling Car Key Services. Ordering key blanks online for $5 and having them cut at Lowes or Royal King, and using your car to program them is screwing up their racket. Although most small local hardware stores will still cut them.
It is a step backwards... Easier to steal a car .. some of this technology is just too much trouble
Seriously, I wish all people remain YOUNG AND FRESH like Scotty for their entire lives! I mean, there are definitely people 30 years younger than Scotty who are OLD AND STIFF inside.
I went through this myself. There really is a liability issue with programmable keys. I used to work at a Home Hardware and we were specifically told by our insurance company that we were not to cut programmable key. The problem was that on some cars multiple uses of an unprogrammed key would cause the ignition system to totally shut down requiring a trip to the dealer to reprogram everything.
that problem has nothing to do with OP, that could happen with any key even one that was bought in store.
@@joeydelrio If I knew what "OP" meant, I might even agree with you.

I have a 2011 Cadillac and all you have to do is put the master key in a little pocket and do what the information says on the dash and it will program the key. No cost.
Tell her to 'Stay Safe' after you cough into her face
Scotty - We're cut from the same blank. I feel your pain I really do. "HAVE A NICE DAY" is annoying, especially when it's not meant in a friendly and sincere manner. On another subject I want to say I appreciate your video's and how you respond to emails. In today's world it is a rarity as you well know; Customers service is dead.
Hahaha... Mr. Scotty... I am so with you... I'm guessing the "store manager" was a transplant from that "other" state. 😉
Kentucky? Or another, "other" state?
@@lindajohnson4204 Well... a LOT further WEST!
The picture that popped up when Scotty said, “If you lose one (key) and don’t have another . . . “ 😄
"Have a nice day!" after refusing service is not sincere at all. Basically a slap in the face.
"We're sorry about that" would have more sincerity
