- Welcome back to Next-Gen Console Watch. This week Daemon is joined by Max Scoville, host of IGN's PlayStation show, Podcast Beyond, and Stella Chung, from Unlocked, IGN's Xbox podcast. The topic: what is the future of console-exclusive games? Ex-PlayStation exec Shawn Leydon seems to be against console exclusives if their production budgets get too high, and former Xbox exec Peter Moore thinks Microsoft is already discussing bringing their AAA titles like Halo to competing platforms. Plus, we have last week's poll and another poll for you to vote on at IGN.com.

It's funny this conversation is really just with Microsoft and Sony. Everyone seems to accept if you want to play Nintendo games, you buy a Nintendo console. It's hard to see that ever changing...

@nickstark8479 well actually if you look back in history, Nintendo has never had a streak of selling well in terms of home consoles. With the N64, GameCube, and the wii u not doing spectacular numbers... especially the wii u.
@@Mmachine88 the N64 sold pretty well obviously it may seem like a failure compared to the numbers the original PlayStation sold at but really it was the GameCube and Wii U that was Nintendo‘s biggest failures.

Nintendo always gets a pass on these conversations.
Nintendo will never allow their games to be played on other consoles so exclusives are here to stay love it or hate it.

People always want to throw out these crazy numbers of PC gaming as if all 2B players play AAA when less than a fraction of a percent plays AAA games. Consoles are really more for the largest group of people that prefer mostly AAA games.

PC gaming is still fairly niche compared to console gaming, which has the lying share of the market.
PC gaming isn’t niche it’s a huge market and bigger than any console market on its own. That does include more casual players too but the biggest selling games on PC are the big AAA titles just like consoles and if you look at Steams hardware survey most players have hardware capable of running modern games.

If everything was just a two year timed exclusive then you'd still have incentive to buy one console over another or buy all three consoles, but if you can't afford it you can also wait two years to buy the game on your preferred platform. It's a win-win for both consumers and platform holders, as they need to sell more software

Well, if your exclusives get you to 3:1 or 4:1 sales on the competition you’re not only growing your platform for your first party games, you’re building it for more stable and longer indie 3rd party AAA and AA games.

@@xdjrunner well currently except spiderman 2 and few remastered versions of first party games, there isn't many great games Sony has released this year for ps5. Getting an xbox this year would be great since you can play several upcoming first party titles like Avowed, Hellblade, Indiana Jones and the compatible Activision games coming on Gamepass like Diablo, newer and older Call of Duty games.

The majority of Nintendo games are exclusive and nobody complains about that. People only focus on Playstation and Xbox.
Also if every game was available on every console then why would you need different consoles on the market.

It drives people to their ecosystem. That's the point. People buy the console cause some exclusives they want and then they buy third party games, subscriptions, controllers etc.

Agreed! Exclusives is the PS strategy which has worked up to this point. With stronger PS5 sales compared to Xbox … I’m not sure why they bother with 1st or 3rd party exclusives. IMO … after a few years, release it everywhere.

Daemon! The show was the perfect opportunity for you to mention Godzilla Minus One! In Hollywood the same movie would’ve cost ten times what it cost in Japan. The problem isn’t that the production costs of games have skyrocketed, the problem is that the salaries of the people who make them have been taken out of proportion.
Andrew Wilson made around 10 Million dollars last year for running EA.

Exclusives SELL consoles. Consoles have razor thin profits if at all, they need to sell great games that you can only play in one place.
There's a reason why Playstation continues to outsell Xbox 3 to 1.

It has nothing to do with exclusives and more to do with brand recognition. Sonys sells lots of consoles but make more money off of 3rd party games than first. Simple reason, people don’t care about their exclusives.

Exclusive games get consumers to choose one platform over another and that platform takes a 30% cut of third party games sold on their store. So comparing individual exclusive games sales numbers can't be the only thing to consider whether something is profitable or not

Do you really think Nintendo will forever be exempt from this? Only reason why Nintendo currently isn't bothered with this exclusivity talk is because they're developing for outdated hardware. When the Switch 2 comes out and they're making games for more modern hardware, their budgets will gradually increase. Next thing you know, 10 to 15 years from now Nintendo will be putting games on PC.

There can be more than 1 console exclusive... We literally had several dozens of them in the ps3 era. PS5 by contrast has 3 true exclusives and is halfway through its lifecycle.

Nintendo's secret to success is they sell their hardware for profit, or at least, not a loss like Sony, or Xbox. This is why most of their hardware is under powered: It's cheaper to produce. So, any sales of their consoles, or handhelds (their primary market share where they dominate) is additional profit on top of game sales where the traditional money is made.
PS5 sells at a profit. Look it up.

Gamepass has a 70-80% attachment rate for series consoles. In short xbots are funding Xbox games; therefore Ms going 3rd party is free money due to day1 gamepass. It unironically creates a barrier to entry for competition as a day 1 game will have millions gaining access vs hoping for software sales to keep a multiplayer game alive/growing.

Console exclusives is the only way the console maker will survive. There is no reason to buy a console over a gaming laptop if there are no expulsive games. You will need a PC, or laptop, regardless if you play games or not but you don't need a console.

Exclusive game are made to sell consoles. They can make exclusive games available for everyone 6months or a year after launch.
They're skipping over the fact that since they originally started as just console companies, of course they wanted exclusivity, get everyone to buy their consoles, but as they started buying game developers they've started flirting with the idea of eliminating exclusivity cause they would get more income from more buyers, no matter the console. If they stayed as just console companies they would not even consider eliminating exclusivity

Marvel Spider Man 2 cost 270 million dollar to make, still it hasn't been profitable for Sony, it's better to release it in every console, or move back to Indy games.
They spent so much and still didn’t fix the bugs and added filler side quests. Maybe they need to scale back on their expenses if spending such an amount still only gives them a “satisfactory” product.
It’s profitable already. They broke even at 7.2m copies as per the leak and it sold more than 10m already.
Also people seem to forget how these platform holders make money. Think steam, they have no exclusives yet they make money because they collect 30 percent from every third party sale including mtx/dlc. Ps collects way more from that than they do first party sales and that’s without any dev risk.
GTA5 is coming out next year for consoles only. By having a few exclusives you essentially have the dominant platform for that game’s sale. Ps will collect double the sales of gta5 vs Xbox based on install base. Let’s say it sells to half the base on each console. That’s 30m vs 15m in copies sold on ps vs Xbox. For ps that’s 30% x $70 x 30 = 630m in profit off one title. And that’s all profit, no risk of development or anything.
Why would you give that up to sell a few more million copies of 1-2 first party games (that’s all ps can release based on studios it has).
Ragnarok sold 15m on ps alone in a year. The best selling game every where was hogwarts at 22m. So essentially to get 7m more sales (343m) you risk your entire platform, where the fifa’s, cods, Fortnite’s, Roblox just give you free money.
The math for those grade school education level folks, watching at home:
11,000,000 × 70 = 770,000,000

Exclusives never made sense to me especially from a business standpoint. Releasing games on multiple platforms gives gamers more choices and increases sales and in return they make more money for future IP's. The best selling game of 2023 was Hogwarts legacy. It sold 22 million copies. If a blockbuster movie sold 22 million tickets it would be considered a massive flop. Gaming is still a niche hobby compared to movies, music and TV. The customer base is too small without adding extra restrictions of exclusives.

Consoles will be replaced by the internet and phones. If Apple or Samsung can run games natively none of this will matter.
Every game should just come on PC. Nintendo might take another decade or two given their famous stubbornness, but eventually all games should be made available on PC platforms. PC is just the objectively best platform. You can upgrade it to be as strong as you want, or go for something cheaper. You can play games anywhere with Steam Deck or other handheld PCs. You can mod the games however you want. PlayStation Studios and Square Enix can make great games, I'd just much, much rather play them on PC rather than be forced to buy a console for a small handful of games.

Exclusives make people invest in their console and then they buy games, subscriptions, controllers etc, for years to come. How many consoles got sold cause of Spiderman and other exclusives? Was Spiderman 2 really a bad game to have only on Playstation or is it a huge indirect revenue plus?
