He mentions in the _SCTV_ book that he was having to push himself really hard to hit those notes, because all the singing was actually him and Rick Moranis laying down multiple tracks with the other thing lip-synching.
SCTV is The Beatles and SNL is the Rolling Stones. The latter has been active for much longer and alternated eras of absolute brilliance with fallow periods when they're basically just going through the motions; the former was truly great for its entire - but much shorter - existence.
I just realized that several (maybe all?) of these songs are based on the 5 Neat Guys' classic hits. "Absence of Malice" is "Pimples and Pockmarks!" and "Reds" is "Slow Dance."

The funny thing is- I knew all those films. I think most of the culture did. At that time me the culture was shared. What about now? Is it possible that a majority of people know the best movies (or at least the most popular movies) of the year. Answer: No. too many movies made- and the culture is no longer shared.
I doubt a lot of people here can remember just what a huge dearth of anything worth watching on TV or movies there was in the 1980's - especially the early 80's. SNL was going through 5 years w/out Lorne Michaels and showing it badly, and SCTV was the only remotely funny thing on eh!
I felt like when I watched SCTV late at night, as a teenager, I learned something important about satire: The mark of great satire is that it makes you feel sheepish about ever having taken seriously the thing being lampooned. I would watch this show, and laugh, and then think: "I've actually spent my valuable time watching movies and TV shows that were only slightly better than the intentionally terrible ones being cooked up here.
