  • Thanks for watching. This is the second video on a Honda CT70K1, that I picked up in Michigan. Very rusty and kinda rotted, I’m attempting to give it be life. In the first video, I got the engine to run. In this video, I finish the disassembly to the bare frame. #HondaCT70 #Trail70 #MiniTrail

    Recently, I needed a replacement key for a 1972 Trail 90. The local locksmith was unsuccessful in trying to match a blank to cut new ones. Contacted a Honda Dealer’s parts guy with the key switch code and he happened to have two to send me.

      It put up a good fight. I don’t think I’ve ever used a big hammer, vice grips and a cutoff tool on any bike as much as this one.

  • @RC-fu6hg
    @RC-fu6hg 8 месяцев назад +1

    For a second there I thought you were going to weld the nut to the broken bolt and switch from vice grip slipping to a six point box wrench for better leverage. But you had the patience to gently work it off. That was awesome 😎 👍

    • @MiniBikeMike
      @MiniBikeMike  8 месяцев назад

      Thanks! If you weld the nut, then you heat up the bolt. If you don’t let the bolt cool off, you risk twisting it in two. I figured the timeframe was gonna be about the same, so I kept going with what I was doing.

  • @donsoule6411
    @donsoule6411 8 месяцев назад +2

    Just a suggestion, in the future, especially when trying to save both pieces… when using heat and penetrating oil, the heat “cracks” the rust bond, then for the penetrant to be effective the part needs to be cool enough for it to flow into the threads. If applied when it’s too hot, it just vaporizes.

    • @MiniBikeMike
      @MiniBikeMike  8 месяцев назад +3

      I’ve had just the opposite experience. Without the heat, the penetrating oil does nothing. I feel the heat “sucks” the oil into the threads.

    • @donsoule6411
      @donsoule6411 8 месяцев назад

      @@MiniBikeMike Wasn’t suggesting not using heat… many times that in itself will free a “frozen” screw/bolt. I agree that without heat penetrating oil can often take a long time to soak in, depending on the severity of the corrosion. For those guys without access to a torch, both soaking with penetrating oil and the “beat-it” treatment usually leads to success.

    Mike; I've had some success with steel stuck in aluminum by using an air chisel with hammer head, seems the vibrations shakes some of the corrosion loose. Might try it sometimes as it has worked for me, just don't go crazy.

    is it safe to store a motorcycle without gas in it inside a garage? I heard mixed responses as sitting without gas can cause rust in gas tank, but gas can also go bad eventually and rust the tank too. what do you recommend?

    Hey Mike, what do you generally do regarding a badly damaged round speedometer (not part of the headlight bucket like the earlier ones or the 91-94 models). Good used round ones are hard to find and very expensive. Damaged ones can be reconditioned but it is a fair amount of work. Is there an aftermarket one you have found that is a good replacement? I recently picked up a pretty decent used Ruckus speedo for $25 thinking it might be an option. They are in decent supply both new and used and are affordable. The Ruckus speedo is slightly smaller in diameter. The Ruckus has 10” wheels so the calibration may be the same as CT70. Or do you replace the round speedo and headlight bucket with the aftermarket combination units? John from San Antonio

    • @MiniBikeMike
      @MiniBikeMike  8 месяцев назад +1

      Those rounds speedo are ridiculous in price…. costing more than I paid for the bike I’m currently working on.
      Fortunately, I’m not purist, so using a speedo off something else is no big deal to me. Plus, since I install Lifan’s most of the time, the original 50mph speedo doesn’t go high enough. Because I like the look of having a speedo, I try to install something, whether it works or not. I use a Meilan GPS speedo most of the time, so I don’t really care if the mounted speedo works or not.
      I’m not sure what speedo I used on the current K1 bike I’m building. I believe it’s off a CL175 or SL125 or something. Because it’s slightly larger in diameter, than stock, I had to design a different bracket to hold it.

Unfortunately it is hard to get a original Honda ct70 here in Belgium because they are very rare here. It is my dream to have one some day. I have 2 Honda dax'es they are the 50cc versions but i want to expand my collection. So my question is , would it be possible and make my dream come true for a faire price for one of your bikes?
    Thank you in advance!

    But when you do that, you have to switch the whole wiring harness, don’t you

    • @MiniBikeMike
      @MiniBikeMike  8 месяцев назад +1

      If I were building it to stay with an aftermarket 12v engine, yes, I’d swap the harness. In this case, I’m leaving the original wiring harness in place. I’ll swap headlight and taillight bulbs to 12v. I’ll put a 12v battery in it and run a hot wire directly to the foot brake switch and the running light. The battery should last the 150 mile trip. For the headlight, I’ll zip tie a regulator somewhere easy to access and run a wire from engine to regulator and then to the headlight. All easy to unplug when I get there and plug in the stock harness.
