Everything became so simple when I thought of it this way: On1 is break step step and On2 is step break step. On2 feels more smooth because the break step is sandwiched between two smaller steps. On1 feels more staccato because the break happens right away on the "quick quick slow" measure. To make matters even more confusing Palladium 2 (or Cuban 2?) is essentially the same as On1 - in that it also goes break step step - but we just start the break on 2 instead of 1. It took me years to understand all of this. In the end the beginners cannot tell the difference. But seasoned people stress when having to switch to a different style. It feels as if you are starting all over again (at least at first).
@@heinrichmirgrautsvor sometimes with words its hard to explain dance... its best to take only one private class on that topic... so you can see and try for yourself... the feel is different
Can you create a side-by-side video that shows the same move? Everyone says that On2 is much smoother. Can you visualize that? Thanks by the way for all your great videos!
I wanted to do it but because on2 it breaks backwards on2 the visual didn’t work… it feels somewhat smoother because the pause is done while moving… but its possible to make on1 very smooth too
Dancing on 2 is stepping to the Clave in the music:stepping to 2-3 and 6-7. Emphasizing this count in music while dancing to a song will discover the magic of mambo) The more you count doing this, the more you will develop an ear for dancing this "groove line" (aka Clave) sources (Cuban Pete, Eddie Torres). Is it normal if you dance very well in 2 and for you, just don’t make sense of turning on to dance in1? Is it common in some place, I keep trying to fix it all the time!! I love dancing salsa in 2💃🏼 but in 1 it is almost stressful 😅
A useful reminder of one of the basic moves. They both look the same and you make them look easy and elegant! I found On1 difficult enough, without worrying about On 2 which I understood from reading and hearing from others is more difficult 😂
Where the actions occur in relation to the music is very different. Also the slow is happening during the leads giving you extra time compared to on 1.
I'm still curious about the difference between dancing On1 and On2, because the break in On2 is just the same On1 but breaking in 2. It never breaks the 123 567 and replace ir for the 234 678, close to the son pattern.
Yes close but the steps are different… the son would be the on1 step moved to 2… no modification on the steps. But the actual on2 when theres the 1 beat you step with the right foot… and the pause one foot moves. On1 no feet moves. On son during the pause no feet move. Hope this clarifies
@@SalsaBailaProductions so now that im seeing it again, it seems like there is an extra beat in the midle of the turn. instead of turning over 3 counts, the follow is turning over 4 (2-3-4-5) is that right? or did I miss something

Question: Is this Palladium style? Because I have seen others leads break forward with their left foot on the count of 2. I believe that style is called New York on2. Which is correct or most common? 😅 Great video and explanation but I’m truly confused now.
Yes its the newyork on2…. The newyork on2 breaks on forward on 2 when u do solo shows or footwork but once with a partner the lead breaks back on2… just to add to the confusion lol
@@SalsaBailaProductions okay this makes more sense. Thank you for the breakdown. I will stick to learning on this channel. :) just liked and subscribed
The main difference about NY Style and Palladium Mambo is the counting. NY Style (123,567) and Palladium (234, 678). Both are On2. In fact, in this vídeo, the instructor begins stepping NY but then in the middle of the secuence, starts stepping 234, 678, like Palladium mambo.
The difference I see for this video dance instruction is the rock steps are quick quick (outside steps) middle step slow for “on one” and “on two” is opposite.
Another way to explain it is that, on 1 with partner, the lead starts with their left foot moving forward and on 2 going backwards with partner (this step is also known as mambo) I believe in NY this step changes and is forward. But for now, just focus on 1 moving forward and on 2 moving backwards when you start your count (the beat). When practicing alone it reverses in a way, except that 1 you start your left moving forward and on 2 moving forward with your right.
Sorry but I did not understand it AT ALL. What would be helpful withhold be to START a song on on1. Then START same song on on2. I know how to start on1, habe no idea where/how to start in the music in on2. Sadly this video did not clarify
If you look at on one, it looks like they snap to center. Everything is a focused on coming to center. Left center. Right center. The on two looks more like a pendulum. Like they're swinging left to right.
@@SalsaBailaProductions Ok 🙏j'en conclus qu'il n'est pas possible que le leader danse sur le 1 tandis que le follower soit sur le 2 ou réciproquement 😁
Fire. This is so easy to understand for beginners. I love how y'all just showed the very easy to imitate figures and spins.
