  • What is the Difference Between Mambo and Salsa? - Today we clarify some of the major differences between the two styles that often get confused - the mambo and salsa. Salsa is a party social dance that was born on the streets and clubs designed for small spaces and can be lead/followed very organically. Mambo is now a rhythm dance in the ballroom industry which makes it a bit more structured and takes up more space than salsa. Superb explanation. I had to watch it about eight times before I finally understood the difference between "On 2 " and Mambo. I began salsa years ago but gave up because the music was too fast for me to enjoy the moves the way I felt they "should" be danced. I now finally realise that my natural inclination is to do a Mambo style "4-1 step and weight shift + hip action" on the "salsa-on-1" 3 beat and 7 beat. You explained why this never felt right at the higher bpm music played in the clubs. THANK YOU. Probably nobody will understand what I've written, but writing it has been quite a big step forward for me:-)

Really interesting , thank you for taking the time to explain this . I have been dancing on 1 for quite some time , which to me just feels comfortable , I have some friends that mostly dance on 2 , and have been trying to convert me I think LOL . I have to say I really do like the fullness of the Mambo steps .

So mambo is danced contra tiempo, I love dance salsa on contra tiempo as well like in Cuba because some music feels better for it to use the accents in it.
