Whoah, Connor you absolutely smashed this comparison. The different voice of each pickup comes through so clearly, anyone watching this should feel confident that they have a clear picture of what each sounds like. Amazing job, it’s not easy doing something like this!
@adamnollygetgood I’ve got the Polymaths in a guitar with a Hipshot Tone-A-Matic bridge and absolutely love them! Sometimes I do find myself wishing they were slightly tighter, brighter, and a bit sharper on the pick attack for certain applications. Would you recommend the PolyPafs for that?
@@brianloughlin2340 Hey Brian, the PolyPaf would give you those qualities, but feel a lot more dynamic/less compressed. If that's something you like the idea of then absolutely, but if you think you'll miss the Polymath's output level you might want to look at the True Grit, Emerald and Rebel Yell bridge models, or if you want to get a lot more aggressive with a ceramic magnet the Brute Force, Aftermath or Unity models.
@@brianloughlin2340I apologise in advance for the deeply unsatisfying answer I’m about to give - I like both equally, and will choose which based on what suits the music best at any given point. As demonstrated here under gain the PolyPaf has a brighter and tighter voice with more string definition and attack, where the Polymath sounds smoother with a more juicy and chunky quality
Wonderful vid dude, exactly what I needed! Gonna get a polymath bridge and polypaf neck in the future for my custom24, let’s see what is gonna happen :)
This is one of the better pickup comparisons i've seen. Very well executed with the differences highlighted perfectly. From a recording standpoint it's easy to see how having both these options would be great, especially layered. Attack and "kerrang" from the Polypaf and that smooth compression from the Polymath. That Polypaf neck pickup was particularly good sounding as well.
The split and clean tones are what sell me on the Paf. The distorted tones have differences yes, but the pushed split coil tone is something I've been hugely interested in. Love it. Hoping to get an Essentials series in the next month and gonna drop one of these sets into it!
This is how you do a pickup comparison video 🦾 even through crappy laptop speakers, the different voice of each pickup was clear as day. Those PolyPafs though... 🤯
This is how I hear it. Polymaths sound darker and the pafs sound brighter but more traditional. I’d like to see maybe what a combo of the two would be like, just to help balance it out. I do like that you can actually hear a difference. Sometimes with these videos you can barely hear the difference and if you do, in a mix it wouldn’t matter. These two def sound like they’re trying to solve two distinct problems.
"They'll sound a bit brighter and gentler output-wise than the Polymath when split...For what it's worth, we found the combination of Polymath brigde with Polypaf neck is very special, and could be a good consideration if you want the bridge position to be especially full while split." Nolly replying to my comment.
thank you for making this! I already have the polynaths in one of my guitars and was gonna do one in the bridge of an hss but with the polypaf coming out i wanted to compare so this is perfect!
Covers naturally take some treble off ive noticed. Like it feels alittle more present

@mmaviator22 true, covers make a small difference in the A/B Tests that I've seen. But usually the difference is so small that it's just a matter of what aesthetic is preferred. The polymaths do have a really cool cover design.

I'm going to be ordering a set for my CE24 which they stated they tested them in with the 5 way rotary with great results. I just can't decide which set because I love the Polymath so much in my strandberg 7, especially the neck. However it seems they recommend the Polypaf for shorter PRS and Gibson style guitars due to the scales affect on the tone and output (shorter scale means more output from more vibrations and a darker treble response.)
They both sound awesome but as I heard PolyPafs has a tighter low end response and lower output and I liked it more. I would probably prefer PolyPafs. By the way amazing content as always!
Hey Connor, Thanks for the great video, man! I am trying to graps the chords you are playing at 3:52 and 3:54, can you help out? What tuning are you in? Thank you!
Pretty similar, thought the polypafs seem to have more top end/upper midrange and less output. Voicing isn't super different but noticeable. Great demo.
@@JoeHeislerTim and I actually retested the pickup covers on and off during R&D for the PolyPaf and came to the conclusion that with the high quality and thin covers BKP use the difference is almost negligible, and more of a factor is the raising of the screw poles vs the slug poles on a covered pickup. Other brand/types of cover might and do have more impact on the sound though - this is specific to BKP
@@adamnollygetgood Thanks for the info! I do love how the covers look especially with your polymath design, so that might change my purchase decision a bit. Haha

The PolyPAFs sound more clear to me and have better definition. I can see the Polymaths working better for guitars which have more treble. I still prefer the Black Hawks though. They have the clarity and power in one.

Great comparison of Nolly's Polys.
Glenn Fricker's gonna be crying at the comparisons

YES. this is the comparison I've been waiting for. Thank you for spending the time to do this

oh god i thought i liked the polymaths but the polyPAFs seem absolutely perfect
Thanks for this. I was looking for this video. I am glad that you did a bit more chugging, than in the official BK video. This helped out greatly.

Thanks Connor, great comparison! Both sound awesome, but I'd go for at set of PolyPafs
I needed this! I’ve been contemplating both of these for a single cut guitar that needs better pups.
I saw your post on instagram and I just needed that video! Killing it as always connor!
thank you for making this! I already have the polynaths in one of my guitars and was gonna do one in the bridge of an hss but with the polypaf coming out i wanted to compare so this is perfect!
Thanks for the video, I’ve been looking at these for my Strandberg since I am not fond of the midrange of the Suhr pickups.
Great playing and comparison! It would be cool to see how you set amps and fx in the Nolly X. The tones are super balanced✨
Oof this is a tough call! Both sound so good for different styles of music.
Uff polymath bridge and polypaf neck would be incredible combination but both are just superb. The options are various.
awesome comparison
so if you feel like your guitar is too dark, you get the PolyPafs. If you want to tame a shrill guitar, get the Polymaths.

Your don't happen to have a comparison on a barione?
Anyone think the Polymath bridge w/ Polypaf neck would work good? I have a Polymath set, but the neck just sounds too round and dark for me.
On Instagram they mentioned that pairing working great
That's what I ordered but I dont have a comparison for you as its my first set of BKs but staff said that combo was already popular

This is in drop C# I think
Love the PAFs for traditional sounding stuff but based on the demo the dense dissonant chords I love playing don't sound as good on them.
Just open the RUclips to search poly things.. and this video pop up even before i click the search...
hmmm I was definitely hoping for a bit more low end output/bloom from the pafs. Math's sound best to me.
Connor, what interface do you use?
I just found polypafs sound almost exactly like the Dimarzio Fortitude, maybe Dimarzio have more body, but I swear its almost the same
i put the fortitudes in my lp. the bass is too much for it but sound good with an od just not used to using one with an evh 100watt
Can I color grade your videos?
The PolyPAF are noticeably brighter than the Polymath. Definitely two different flavors.
Pretty similar, thought the polypafs seem to have more top end/upper midrange and less output. Voicing isn't super different but noticeable. Great demo.
I’ve found that pickup covers roll some top end off so I wonder how close it would be without the covers on the polymaths

Clean polypafs sound like an acoustic guitar with fresh strings on
Polypafs are perfect for dad rock and lower gain. Maths are great hard rock/metal
Both models sound good but I wish they had a pickup set thats in between. They could call it the Mathypaf lol
Maths for higher gain. Pafs for lower gain, and clean.
PolyPAFs are best BKPs now imo

Polypaf was WAY better
covered vs uncovered? wow
