Feel the exact same way. His childhood was full blown dysfunctional. He is being honest I believe. It really wasn't about - partying. It was simply to control the circus. Wish people around him at that vulnerable time could see that. However, he wouldn't be the man he is today. So proud of him standing up for himself and the TRUTH.
He's earnt my respect especially by being truthful I value truth lessons are necessary & valuable & cannot be taken from us hahahahaha 😝

That is exactly how addiction is started. When people try and self medicate.Johnny is being so open and honest about it.
But to assume the premise like that, that self medicating doesnt involve an undiagnosed mental or physical issue, especially when his mother was being doctor medicated with those very same first pills.

You've not had it or you would know.
It's the pain behind any addition, be it food, the gym, shopping, ocd, etc.
Self medicating works as a kid, just as adult didn't know of any other way of dealing. Stopped all in mid 30's, had to learn how to function in life without aid. Johnny seems same, until earth shattering emotion and stresses happen and don't know how to deal with it. His marriage to HER through him over the edge, for while. Glad he went to England to stop the crazies and can do what he enjoys.
