Yamaha YZ65 versus KTM 65SX - Dirt Bike Magazine

  • There’s no doubt that Yamaha is going after KTM with the YZ65. In amateur racing, the 65 class is dominated by KTMs with just a smattering of Husqvarna TC65s and even fewer Cobra 65s. The Kawasaki KX65 is aimed at play riders and true beginners, so when it comes to racing, the Yamaha’s target is clearly the KTM. When you put the Yamaha and KTM side by side, it’s striking how similar the two bikes are in size and features. They have the same wheelbase (45 inches), the same fuel capacity (0.9 gallon) and both have six-speed gearboxes with nearly identical overall gear ratios, gear for gear. On the track, the two bikes have nearly identical performance. They both are amazingly powerful. In the end, the track performance of the two bikes is so similar that you really shouldn’t make a decision based on that alone. Yamaha did an excellent job of hitting the target. If the bike was any faster, it might have alienated beginners; any slower and it would have lost the serious racers. At this point, it’s more about dealer support and brand identity. Yamaha has made the 65 class a race again.

This is a great comparison but I was so distracted at how amazing the kids demonstrated proper riding form! Like text book!, High elbows, choke up on the seat in the turn, braking, accelerating. All across the board the details done perfect, great job guys! I would be a proud father!

how the time flies, I remember 15 years ago riding my 2002 sx65 lol then had a yz85 and yz125, now I'm 25 and ride a yz 250 2 stroke, even though we grow older these bikes will always have a place in my heart, reminds me of my youth and the good old days, may need the yz65 as a pit bike lol

To a certain extent yes, but if you are a very good rider lower end bikes definitely limit you. My friend owns an mx shop and does a lot of work with smaller bikes like 85’s and 65’s and has to do a lot of work engine wise with bikes like the Kx, and yz to keep up with the ktm’s. Not only engine work but ktm stock wp suspension blows all the competitions out of the water.

Will a large child be stronger (not just physically) by learning his primary motocross skills on a bike 10lbs heavier? Help or hindrance?
Also curious about approx current cost of each, I called my Yamasuki dealer as soon as I watched this but forgot it's Monday and they ain't open on Monday. I got to move to city...

When your riding any bike... ten pounds is a really small amount of weight. No beginner on earth would notice much more then the colour of the bike. In canada yz65 is about 5300 bucks.

I hope that the conversion rate on that $6500 CD vs USD goes my way. I might as well get him a 450 and let him grow into it. JK....
It does appear to be a nice little bike.

Thanks, I am waiting on my local shop to open this morning. I'll let you know what the going rate is in Arkansas. I think we're going to trade 1 of our Harleys toward a new 65 and something for myself. I sold my 450 and only have a couple KX500'S but want something new to ride the local Hare scramble group with my youngest son along with his motocross (I'm getting to old)
Do you know anything good or bad about the Husqvarna 65? It's been a long while since my older boys rode, it's like starting over and relearning everything.
